Effects of Emotional Expressions on Eye Gaze Discrimination and Attentional Cuing

Lee, Daniel Hyuk-Joon 15 February 2010 (has links)
Recent evidence has shown that our emotional facial expressions evolved to functionally benefit the expression’s sender, in particular fear increasing and disgust decreasing sensory acquisition. Using schematic eyes only that lack emotional content, but taken from actual participant fear and disgust expressions, we examined the functional action resonance hypothesis that adaptive benefits are also conferred to the expression’s receiver. Participants’ eye gaze discrimination was enhanced when viewing wider, “fear” eyes versus narrower, “disgust” eyes (Experiment 1). Using a gaze cuing paradigm, task facilitation by way of faster responses to target was found when viewing wider versus narrower eyes (Experiment 2). Contrary to our hypothesis, a null attention modulation for wider versus narrower eyes was found (Experiments 2 and 3). Nonetheless, the evidence is argued for the functional action resonance hypothesis.

Pomin, Edison. January 2011 (has links)
In this work, polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) was treated using three techniques: (1) plasma treatment with non-polymerizable gases (Ar, He, H2, O2 and N2), in a plasma reactor fitted with capacitive electrodes and excited by rf power; (2) ablation of a copper electrode excited by rf, with subsequent plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition (PIIID); (3) rf-magnetron sputerring associated with PIIID. The effects of treatments on the electrical and surface properties of the substrates were investigated. The objective was to reduce the capacity of PTFE to accumulate surface electrical charges. Changes in wettability and surface energy were obtained by measuring the contact angle. Thicknesses and roughnesses were examined using profilometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The chemical structure of the surface was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Surface electrical resistivity was measured with an electrometer by applying the two-point method. The characterizations revealed that method (1) was able to alter the characteristics of the substrates in many respects, but not to significantly modify their surface electrical resistivity. After treatment by method (2), XPS results revealed the presence of copper on the substrate surface, but in insufficient quantify to cause the desired percolation effect. In method (3) copper particles were incorporated into the substrates to form films with thicknes of up to 4,000 A and the electrical surface resistivity was reduced by eight orders of magnitude. PTFE treated by rf-magnetron sputerring with a copper cathode los its ability to retain electrostatic charges / Mestre

Geralt's Third Sword : Representation of sex in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Lynn Angerer, Lynn, Christiansen, Mette January 2023 (has links)
This paper examines the representation of sex in the game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in terms of quest design, narrative, and sex scenes. Examining this topic is relevant to identifying misogynistic tropes in games and finding out where the portrayal of sex might be lacking or even harmful, for designers as well as consumers. The research was conducted through the close reading method, with two researchers playing and analyzing the game. The paper has found a tendency to use sex as a reward for the player. This is done through the quest design, and the framing of the sex scenes, which use and objectify women’s bodies to create an erotic spectacle for the male player. All this constructs a power fantasy for said player through identification with the protagonist, which is encouraged by the framing of cut scenes and the game medium

Genders Lab and narratives, which happened in November and December 2015, March and April 2017, in addition to the narratives produced by the people who committed themselves to the registered design from the School of Visual Arts (FAV) at the Pro-rector of Extension and Culture (PROEC) from the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). Masculinities in this study are treated as cultural constructs that are supported by the variety of speeches to operate in societies. For this reason, after reports of several visualities are problematized, these constructs of discipline and control that not only relate to the scope of the affective-sexual, but also to the domain of symbolic production. In this sense, this research craved analyze the possibilities and deconstruction strategies of visualities on masculinities and masculinization of looks, this from hypervisuals talks, works with memories and narratives produced by the group of students and teachers on the main subject of research: objectification and women hypersexualization, especially black women and black men; invisibility of the non heteronormative identities and androcentrism in using audiovisuals and media devices. The methodological approach nicknamed and used in this process corresponds to the hypervisual conversations that consist in an expansion of a narrative research expansion from works with visualities and countervisualities. To better comprehend the proper use of the term ‘hypervisuals’ are threshed, throughout the text, discussions around the concept of visual, visual images, the visualities, the countervisualities, the scopic regimes and many other terms of the studies of visual cultures. Since it’s a study linked to the Line of Image Cultural Research of image and Mediation Processes, this research outlines also the use of hypervisual narratives as possible to develop pedagogical processes with deconstructivist bias.

Visby visuellt : föreställningar om en plats med utgångspunkt i bilder och kulturarv / Visual Visby : Imaginations of a place through pictures and cultural heritage

Johansson, Carina January 2009 (has links)
This thesis deals with the roles pictures play when collective imaginations of a city are constructed. The examples comes from Visby, a city with famous medieval remains, on the island Gotland in the Baltic. Cultural heritage politics points out heritage as a mode of cultural production. Heritage is constructed when values are added to specific objects by specific actors for specific purposes. Visual cultural studies underline the practices of looking. We are always looking from specific positions. Images and narratives create socially constructed gazes. Gazes together with experiences, dreams, memories, mediated messages and “fore-sights” creates mindscapes. The urban mindscapes of Visby are at focus here. Starting in a Visby top-ten-image-list, images produced and frequently used within the three domains; heritage and tourist industries and the art world are discussed. The images characteristic marks are defined and discussed in terms of authenticity, emotive modes and ways of address. This study also deals with four socially emergent Visby icons and the consequences of the mono-thematic in Visby. When the medieval remains and Hanseatic traders are dominating people’s mindscapes, other periods, social contexts and Visby settings are hidden or overshadowed. The agency of display, a few repeated views in all sorts of media, produces gazes, ways of seeing and unseeing. Photographs, paintings, drawings, prints and souvenirs with Visby motifs are powerful tools in this process. The result is hierarchical orders hard to change. It has not only had the effect that 9/10 of the contemporary city of Visby is being shaded by its status as a medieval icon. The historical centre has also been adjusted in order to fit with the conceptions of the place.

Leduc, Marie 06 1900 (has links)
Since George Orwell’s 1984 (1949), television and the (panoptic and synoptic) gazes that it generates have been a leitmotif of dystopian fiction. In the dystopian novels Acide sulfurique (2005) by Amélie Nothomb and Les Sorcières de la République (2016) by Chloé Delaume, they play a central role. By imposing a way of seeing through the framing of the camera and by transmitting the filmed content to an unlimited number of viewers, televisual gazes are responsible for the horrible treatment of the protagonists. The heroines, Pannonique and Sybille, are exposed without consent on the screens of fellow citizens who are entertained by their misfortunes. The works by the two authors examined both critique, each in their own way, the “society of the spectacle” (Guy Debord, 1967) that television encourages. From an intermedial and a feminist perspective, this research analyses the televisual gazes’ contamination of the novel that occurs through the portrayal of the female characters, but also through the form of the works themselves. Firstly, it seems that they have a significant effect on the protagonists, since they are judged by the viewers according to their appearance and because their sex conditions the image assigned to them (the witch, the virgin, the lover, etc.). However, the impact of televisual gazes is not limited to the intrigue of the novels : they also contaminate the form, structure and narration of the works. Acide sulfurique and Les Sorcières de la République appear as “screening books” inviting readers to adopt a viewer’s role and hosting televisual gazes like a virus, all while fighting them from the inside.
