Richard Outram’s Early Poems (1957-1988): A Critical Introduction with Annotations

Jernigan, Amanda January 2018 (has links)
The thesis comprises an introduction and annotations to Collected Poems of Richard Outram, Volume One (1957–1988), a planned critical edition of the poems of Richard Outram (1930-2005), Canadian poet and printer. It tells the story of Outram’s published oeuvre, beginning in 1957, when he published his first work in collaboration with his wife, the artist Barbara Howard (1926–2002), up through 1988, when Outram and Howard published the last of their hand-printed, letterpress collaborations. Jernigan asserts that Outram’s oeuvre is characterized by a reiterative poetics, in which the poet “reads” individual poems into the public record of his work on multiple occasions, allowing the poems’ meanings to be shaped by the changing context of an unfolding oeuvre, as well as by changes in material context and addressed readership — an assertion reflected in the structure of her edition. At the same time, she speaks to the collaborative context of Outram’s published work, all of which was made in explicit or implicit conversation with his wife, the artist Barbara Howard (1926 – 2002), while also being shaped by the sorts of communal forces famously noted by D.M. Mackenzie. Both the introduction and the annotations demonstrate the close link between composition and publication for Outram, poet-printer. In her introduction, Jernigan considers how this link complicates the traditional dichotomy between genetic and bibliographic approaches to textual criticism. Throughout, Jernigan establishes an updated bibliographical and biographical context for Outram’s work, enlarging upon the seminal scholarship of Peter Sanger, and contributes to the existing scholarship on Outram’s personal and publishing life with new archival research in the Gauntlet Press fonds at Library and Archives Canada, the Richard Outram papers at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, the Allan and Nancy Fleming fonds at York University, and the Macmillan and Key Porter fonds at McMaster University. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / The thesis comprises an introduction and annotations to Collected Poems of Richard Outram, Volume One (1957–1988), a planned critical edition of the poems of Richard Outram (1930-2005), Canadian poet and printer. Both the introduction and the annotations demonstrate the close link between composition and publication, for Outram, and show the deep effect on Outram’s poetics of his longterm collaboration with his wife. The annotations map the interaction, through three decades, of Outram’s commercial- and private-publishing practices, and cast new light on his lifelong practice of reiteration: his habit of reading his own, older poems into the record of his unfolding work again, in new contexts, linking old work to new, and enriching the meanings of both.

Theologies of Israel and Judaism After Barth

Klassen, Zacharie January 2020 (has links)
This thesis examines three students of Karl Barth’s work, all of whom articulate Christian theologies of Israel and Judaism under the influence of his thought and thus the wording of the title, after him. The three theologians are Paul M. van Buren (1924-1998), John Howard Yoder (1927-1997), and Robert Jenson (1930-2017). All three studied with or were supervised by Barth during the 1950s. Later, each of them would make significant contributions to post-Holocaust theologies of Israel and Judaism. In this thesis, I seek to elucidate the conceptual relationship between these two elements—each theologian’s early engagement with Barth and their later contributions to post-Holocaust theology—and argue that by examining the former, one can better understand the theological bases for the latter. I begin with an analysis of Barth’s doctrine of Israel. Barth claims that Israel and rabbinic Judaism are eternally determined to be witnesses to God’s own self-determination in Jesus Christ to be the God whose mercy rules in God’s judgment. A close comparative reading of van Buren, Yoder, and Jenson then follows. I begin by outlining the ways these three theologians appropriate and depart from Barth during or shortly after their time studying with him. I then trace the way each theologian’s early appropriation of and departure from Barth relates fundamentally to the development of their theologies of Israel and Judaism. My analysis reveals that each of the three critique Barth’s doctrine of God’s self-determination as the pre-determination of the identity of Israel and Judaism to be witnesses of Jesus Christ. This common critique enables each of the three to articulate a more positive account of Israel’s and rabbinic Judaism’s witness. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This thesis examines three students of Karl Barth’s work, all of whom articulate Christian theologies of Israel and Judaism under the influence of his thought and thus the wording of the title, after him. Mythologie de Lovecraft : contexte, prétexte, texte

Smith Lacroix, Louis-Pierre 13 April 2018 (has links)
This mythology of H. P. Lovecraft examines the artificial myths inside his texts by comparing them to the modem myths in the context where he wrote according to his mythopoetic pretext. This work comprising five chapters is set in two parts, the first focuses on mythology and the second on Lovecraft. The first chapter establishes the distinctions and relations between art, science and religion necessary to the elaborate a mythology. The second offers a working definition and typology of myth, sacred narrative divided in ethno-religious, literary, modem and artificial myth. The third places Lovecraft in his cultural context where many modem myths had currency. The fourth presents his mythopoetic pretext in regards to the impact of science on religion's representation in art. The fifth describes and analyses his artificial mythology from a corpus of his texts.

« Niche Writers » : Une étude sociologique des niches sociales d’auteurs à New York et à Paris / « Niche Writers » : A sociological study of social writers in New York and Paris niches

Horner, Hervé 19 October 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this research project is to explore the creative process, social learning, motivation, conflicts, rules and norms of three groups of contemporary writers in New York and Paris. Research methods include interviews with authors, the narration of anecdotes about the behavior of the social actors, and the construction of a sociometric table of rules and norms specific to each group according to the theory of Howard BECKER. This project also offers contains a literary analysis using Lucien GOLDMANN’s method of structural study. This research led to the identification of social networks of contemporary authors, in which the exchange of information allows social learning that has both professional and personal value for the social actors in question. Finally, this research will allow the placement of contemporary authors into Pierre BOURDIEU’s map of cultural production, which distinguishes “the sub-field of the avant-garde,” “the sub-field of large-scale production,” and “the field of power” in the literary world.

Sims, Caroline January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to analyze the implementation process of the International Baccalaureate’s Diploma Programme in four of the approximately 30 schools currently offering the IB at upper secondary level in Sweden. The starting point is a comparison between definitions in fundamental documents in the national programmes for Natural Science (NV) and Social Science (SP) on the one hand, and the IBDP on the other. The evaluation, based on Program theory, focuses in particular on the consistencies in the Organizational plans of each system.  The basic assumption is that the IB due to a deviating organizational system, different structures, aims and objectives makes a challenge for the dominating educational discourse, to use a concept by Michel Foucault, and that resistance against the IB therefore is to be expected. As a second part of the evaluation five people who either play, or have played the role of coordinators of the IB, and who thereby are responsible for the implementation, have been interviewed. The questions have been focused around in what sense the informants can confirm resistance in their implementation work due to the differences found in the first part of the evaluation, and in what ways it manifests itself. Finally, Michel Foucault’s power structures in connection to discourse analysis have been applied on the results of the two previous parts of the essay. Foucault claims a school to be one of the state institutions acting on its behalf in conserving and defending its discourse against outside enemies. Two configurations of power are according to Foucault used in the defence; ‘marginalization’ and ‘normalization’. The result of the study confirms evidence of both power structures being found in the implementation of the IB in the four schools included in the analysis and that the resistance against the IB in these schools can be interpreted accordingly.

Réalisabilité et paramétricité dans les systèmes de types purs / Realizability and parametricity in Pure Type Systems

Lasson, Marc 20 November 2012 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the adaptation of realizability and parametricity to dependent types in the framework of Pure Type Systems. We describe a systematic method to build a logic from a programming language, both described as pure type systems. This logic provides formulas to express properties of programs and offers a formal framework that allows us to develop a theory of realizability in which realizers of formulas are exactly programs of the starting programming language. In our framework, the standard representation theorems of Gödel's system T and Girard's system F may be seen as two instances of a more general theorem. Then, we explain how the so-called « logical relations » of parametricity theory may be expressed in terms of realizability, which shows that the generated logic provides an adequate framework for developping a general theory of parametricity. Finally, we show how this parametricity theory can be adapted to the underlying type system of the proof assistant Coq and we give an original example of application of parametricity theory to the formalization of mathematics.

Queer as punk : queercore and the production of an anti-normative media subculture

Nault, Curran Jacob 06 November 2014 (has links)
This dissertation examines the historical contexts, major themes, and archival practices of queercore, an anti-normative queer and punk subculture comprised of music, zines, film, art, literature and new media that was instigated in 1985 by Bruce LaBruce and G.B. Jones in Toronto, Ontario. Via their fanzine J.D.s., LaBruce and Jones declared “civil war” on the punk and gay and lesbian mainstreams and conjured queercore as a multimedia subculture situated in pointed opposition to the homophobia of mainline punk and the lifeless sexual politics and assimilationist tendencies of dominant gay and lesbian society. In the pages that follow, I engage wider histories of radical queer politics and punk aesthetics and values to reveal the generative and long-standing symbiosis between these two energies – a symbiosis that informs queercore, but that also extends beyond its temporal and material boundaries. Through close analysis of queercore films (e.g. No Skin Off My Ass, The Lollipop Generation, The Living End, By Hook or By Crook), music (e.g., Pansy Division, Tribe 8, Beth Ditto/The Gossip, Nomy Lamm) and zines (e.g., J.D.s, SCAB, Bimbox, Bamboo Girl, i’m so fucking beautiful), I establish queercore’s primary themes: explicit sexuality (the use of risky, erotic queer punk images and performances to undermine heteronormativity and confront accepted notions of gay and punk identity); imagined violence (the deployment of a threatened, as opposed to actualized, violence in the hopes of frightening and, thus, destabilizing powerful white, bourgeois, heterosexual masculinity); and bodily difference (the circulation of affirmative representations of marginalized queer bodies, and specifically those that are fat, disabled and/or gender non-normative). Finally, I conclude with an exploration of the institutions and individuals currently involved in queercore archival efforts, thus placing my project within a crucial lineage of subcultural preservation. Taken as a whole, this study asserts that queercore articulates and disseminates a set of alternative identities, aesthetics, politics and representations for queer folks to occupy and engage within social space, providing a dynamic anti-normative, anti-corporate, D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) alternative to a consumer-capitalist hetero- and homo-normative mainstream. / text

Habilidade cognitiva espacial : medida com eletroencefalografia

Spindola, Marilda Machado January 2010 (has links)
The thesis is to contribute for the area of educational research in order to aid on the identification of cognitive profiles, using theoretical references from cognitive sciences and instrumentation from neurosciences. The project designed to meet the objectives of the thesis included the development of experimental methodology, supported by the statistical technique for Experiment Projects, along with neuroscientific instruments (use of electroencephalography with the ERP technique – Event Related Potential), for the observation, quantification, and interpretation of neuronal evidences – electroencephalography signals – related to the human cognitive process. It particularly searched for evidences related to different demands of energy spent to perform spatial activities (identification, perception, or spatial attention of virtual objects), based on theoretical and technological instruments of Neurosciences, Cognitive Sciences and Cognitive Psychology, used in the field of educational research, with the aim to contribute for the identification of different profiles of students in different areas of knowledge. In the experimental investigation, the purpose was to look for indicators (quantification of energy allocated in brain activity, measuring response time to the stimulus, larger magnitude in the frequency band of the brain electrical rhythm, evoked on the experiment) of the brain signals that would be synchronized with the exercise proposed and that could subsidize the hypothesis that there are significant differences between students from scientific and technological fields and students from humanistic and social fields, regarding spatial abilities. The proposal contextualizes and fundaments experiments with a group of volunteer students from the undergraduate programs, selected for the research, classified by age and gender, and evaluated and selected according to a psychological diagnostic indicating a probable area of cognitive ability / aptitude. The development of the investigative proposal that intended to meet the objectives mentioned was possible thanks to efforts of a group of researchers and scientists from different fields of knowledge, pertinent to the process, who collaborated on the modeling of the experiment, carried out at the Biosignal Laboratory of the University of Caxias do Sul, at the University Campus of Região dos Vinhedos, in its Electrical Engineering Program. The development of the measuring instrument was part of the experimental methodological process: the equipment for electroencephalography (EEG) using the system acquisition and conversion of analog to digital signal (manufacturer: National Instruments) and also the equipment known as Faraday’s Cage, which served to the collections of electrical brain signals of low frequency and amplitude, minimizing the presence of electromagnetic noises interfering significantly on the signal collected. The data collected (brain electrical signals) during the experiment that evoked logical spatial reasoning by the participants were mathematically modeled by Fourier and interpreted by statistical analysis – UNIVARIATE (variance analysis) and compared to results obtained by support instruments used as a way of validating the investigative process: a verbal questionnaire at the end of the experiment and a psychological test – subtest BPR5 – RE. All data collected were also saved with the purpose of making it possible to carry out other simulations in the future, with different access methods to the contents. It is understood that the results obtained with this experiment collaborate Informatics applied to Education on planning, developing, and using virtual objects in environments destined to mediate learning according to specific needs of each target public. In that sense, the results of this investigation may provide data or characteristics as measures indicating cognitive efforts associated to differentiated profiles, which are in this case the knowledge fields involving spatial reasoning processes. Understanding the effort manifested by the student during the experiment was interpreted as a possible measure for one of the items related to the cognitive profile, the light of Cognitive Sciences (GARDNER, 1994, 2001), (STERNBERG, 2000), (PINKER, 1998).

From Bayonets to Stilettos to UN Resolutions: The Development of Howard Green’s Views Regarding War

Heidt, Daniel 29 August 2008 (has links)
This thesis follows the development of Howard Charles Green’s (1895-1989) views on war and disarmament as both a private citizen and as a Member of Parliament. It draws its conclusions from a large archival base. Beginning with Green’s experiences in the First World War, this thesis charts Green’s views on war through to the United Nations Irish Resolution on disarmament of December 20, 1960. Contrary to current historiography examining the Diefenbaker period, it proves that Green’s beliefs about war only changed after his appointment as Secretary of State for External Affairs in June 1959, and even then it took time for his new ideals to “harden.” Prior to his “conversion” he believed that war remained a viable aspect of foreign policy and often encouraged its fuller prosecution.
