Previous issue date: 2009-06-19 / This work examines the construction of the images on Brazilian natives created by the
Portuguese Jesuit Fernão Cardim, approaching the Christian look in the 16th century. The
primary objective is to observe and note the outstanding presence of the ideas and values of
the medieval world on Brazil in Father Fernão Cardim s work, aiming to detect permanences
and changes in a study that focuses the long duration. The theoretical and methodological
course is anchored in the perspective of ethnocentrism and of imaginary, considering them as
a category, object of knowledge and fact in the world. The imaginary and the ethnocentric
attitude are predominant factors in the construction, legitimation and justification of actions
by the Jesus Company and the Portuguese State toward the people who lived in 16th century
Brazil. This ethnocentric imaginary persisted in Brazilian history and one often observes
actions, attitudes and positions that carry an inheritance of this way of thinking the Brazilian
indigenous peoples. The research was based on Le Goff s theoretical assumptions and was
supported by anthropological analyses on the indigenous reality. The approach starts from the
analysis of Father Fernão Cardim s writings and the permanence of an ethnocentric look on

observar e constatar a presença marcante das idéias e valores do mundo medieval sobre o
Brasil presentes na obra do Padre Fernão Cardim, objetivando detectar permanências e
transformações em um estudo que privilegia a longa duração. O percurso teóricometodológico
é ancorado na perspectiva do etnocentrismo e do imaginário, considerando-os
como categoria, objeto do conhecimento e fato no mundo. O imaginário e a postura
etnocêntrica, constituem fatores preponderantes na construção, legitimação e justificativa de
ações da Companhia de Jesus e do Estado Português para com os povos que habitavam o
Brasil do século XVI. Esse imaginário etnocêntrico perdurou na historia do Brasil e não raro
se observa ações, atitudes e posturas que carregam uma herança dessa forma de pensar os
povos indígenas do Brasil. A pesquisa foi pautada em pressupostos teóricos de Le Goff e

path as a representaive to the Inacian Order in the portuguese colons to the north
in the state of Grão Pará e Maranhão during the secound half of the XVIII century,
a period when the conflict between the inacians and the portuguese government
were constant. That was the context where were the historic figuring of priest João
Daniel in the midle of the dispute between the crown and the jesuitical Order,
writing hes works. João Daniel propose a economic projet for the Amazon based
upon the jesuits knowledge about the fauna, flora and geography of the region
which he considered the true Amazon treasures. At the same time, he debated
and answered the Portuguese State s accusations against the order and carried
through discussion about the nature and fauna in the New Word. That is the
perspective througt which we propose own study, analyzing this Inacian´s Work,
praising his work as an important voice in the XVIII century, bearing in the mind
that that his work approaches a number of relevant questions such as the
importance of the fauna and flora, the need for adapting the environment toward,
economic development and the indigenous handwork functionality / Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a obra do Padre jesuíta João
Daniel, que iniciou sua trajetória como representante da Ordem Inaciana na
colônia portuguesa ao norte, no Estado do Grão Pará e Maranhão durante a
segunda metade do século XVIII, período em que os conflitos entre inacianos e
governo português eram constantes. Nesse contexto que se encontrava a figura
histórica do Padre João Daniel, em meio à disputa entre coroa e a ordem jesuítica
que este inaciano escreveu sua obra. João Daniel propôs um desenvolvimento
econômico para a Amazônia baseado no conhecimento dos jesuítas sobre a
fauna, flora e geografia da região que o mesmo considerava os verdadeiros
tesouros amazônicos. Ao mesmo tempo debatia e respondia as acusações do
Estado português contra a ordem e permeava discussões sobre a natureza e a
fauna do Novo Mundo. Sob esta perspectiva que propomos nosso estudo,
analisar o trabalho deste inaciano, valorizar sua obra como uma voz importante

As estratégias lúdicas nas ações jesuítas, nas terras brasílicas (1549-1597), \'para a maior glória de Deus\' / The ludic strategies in the Jesuitical actions in Brazilian landsYara Kassab 19 August 2010 (has links)
Esta tese propõe uma reflexão e análise sobre as estratégias lúdicas utilizadas, pelos primeiros jesuítas, para educar e catequizar os nativos da América portuguesa do século XVI, entre 1549 a 1579. O período escolhido marca a chegada de Manoel da Nóbrega e a presença de José de Anchieta na Colônia. Durante o processo de análise observamos as influências da educação humanística do Renascimento na elaboração e desenvolvimento da pedagogia inaciana, voltada para um aprendizado prazeroso. Verificamos que os primeiros documentos elaborados por Inácio de Loyola foram instrumentos que alicerçaram a pedagogia e as normas gerais da Companhia de Jesus, e merecem destaque por terem legitimado a elaboração da Ratio Studiorum; modelo pedagógico vigente a mais de quatrocentos anos nos colégios jesuíticos, formando leigos e religiosos. Verificamos nas correspondências e documentos do século XVI que o catequizar e o educar dos nativos da América portuguesa se deram a partir da pedagogia jesuítica que privilegiava as estratégias lúdicas, tais como o teatro, o coral, o canto, as danças, a música, entre outras ações, promovendo a interação e a simbiose entre a cultura indígena e a cultura europeia. Analisamos o teatro anchietano, utilizado como estratégia lúdica antes mesmo do ensino da leitura, da escrita e do contar. / This theory proposes a reflection and analysis on the entertainment strategies used by the first Jesuits to educate and to catechize the natives of Portuguese America of the XVI century, between 1549 to 1579. The chosen period marks the arrival of Jesuit Priest Manuel da Nóbrega and the presence of the Jesuit missionary José de Anchieta in the then Portuguese Colony, now Brazil. During the analysis process, we have observed the influences of the humanistic education of the Renaissance in the preparation and development of the Ignatian pedagogy turned to a pleasurable apprenticeship. We noted that the first documents prepared by Ignatius of Loyola, were instruments that laid the pedagogy foundations and the general standards of the Company of Jesus and deserve distinction because of having legitimized the preparation of the Ratio Studiorum, a pedagogic model in force for over four hundred years in the Jesuitical colleges, forming laymen and monks. We notice in the correspondence and documents of the XVI century that catechizing and educating the natives of Portuguese America happened from the Jesuitical pedagogy which was privileging entertainment strategies such as theater, corals, singing, dancing and the music amongst other actions promoting this way the interaction and the symbiosis between the native culture and the European culture. We analyzed the Anchietan Theater used as entertainment strategy even before the teaching of reading, writing and arithmetic.

La Tesis titulada "La Historia evangelica de Juvenco en la edición de Faustino Arévalo" estudia el texto editado por Arévalo del poeta latino-cristiano. Presentada la biografía y obra juvenciana -características principales y revisión bibliográfica acerca del mismo-, se aborda la biografía y producción literaria arevaliana; se describe su edición, doble estructura del comentario y Prolegomena. Se valoran sus aportaciones y pervivencia. Se estudia el texto -libro primero- analizando las fuentes manuscritas y ediciones utilizadas, aportando cuatro tablas con variantes textuales y se completa esta parte con la presentación del texto arevaliano con aparato crítico, que evidencia el acierto o no de sus elecciones. En las notae se muestra la riqueza del comentario. Se estudian aquellas más relevantes para conocer su trabajo, remisiones a otros pasajes juvencianos, o su aportación de fuentes evangélicas. Las conclusiones generales cierran el estudio y finalmente se incluyen cuatro Apéndices y un resumen en italiano. / The Thesis entitled "The Historia evangelica from Iuvencus in the Faustino Arévalo's edition" studies the text published by Arévalo of the latin-christian poet. We are offered the biography and the Iuvencian work -main characteristics and bibliographical review about Iuvencus. It deals with the biography and Arévalo's literary production; it describes the edition, the double structure of the commentary and Prolegomena. His contributions and their pervivence are evaluated. It studies the text -the first book- analysing the sources used in it (Manuscripts and editions), adding four charts with the Arevalian text and text review, which shows clearly his choices. It is notorius in his notae the good quality of the commentary. Some of them have been analysed in order to get to know his work, references to other Iuvencian verses, contribution of evangelical sources. La Tesis titulada "Aportaciones de Faustino Arévalo a la edición de Sedulio" estudia el texto editado por Arévalo del poeta Sedulio, en concreto, el comentario -Scholia- al libro primero del Carmen Paschale. Tras la presentación de la biografía del humanista, la descripción de la edición y el estudio de la tradición editorial en la que se inserta Arévalo, se estudia la biografía y producción seduliana tomando como base los Prolegomena arevalianos. Después se describen los manuscritos, ediciones y comentarios de Sedulio. El estudio de la emendatio del texto presenta unas tablas de uariae lectiones, además de ocuparse de cuestiones como las glosas o los títulos de capítulos. La abundancia de lugares paralelos ejemplifica el valor de ese críterio en la determinación del texto. La explanatio se centra en cuestiones de métrica. Se valoran las aportaciones de esta edición y su pervivencia. Hay unos Apéndices y un resumen en italiano. / The Thesis entitled "Contributions from Faustino Arévalo to the edition of Sedulius" studies the poet Sedulius' text edited by Arévalo, specifically, the commentary -Scholia- to the first book of Carmen Paschale. After presenting the humanist's biography, describing the edition and studying Arévalo's literary tradition, the biography and Sedulian literary production are studied taking Arévalo's Prolegomena as a starting point. It follows a description of the manuscripts, editions and Sedulian commentaries. As North American plants took root in Parisian botanical gardens and regularly appeared in scientific texts in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, they retained their connections to networks of ecological and cultural exchange in colonial North America. In this dissertation I study the history of French botany and natural history as it became an Atlantic enterprise during this time, analyzing the production of knowledge about North American flora and the place of this knowledge in larger processes of colonialism and imperial expansion in the French Atlantic World. I focus particular attention on recovering the role of aboriginal peoples in the production of knowledge about colonial environments on both sides of the Atlantic. Rather than integrating aboriginal collectors, chefs and healers into traditional histories of western science, I integrate familiar histories of science into larger histories of cultural contact in an Atlantic World with multiple centres of knowledge production and exchange.
This dissertation develops two closely related arguments. First, I argue that French encounters with American environments and Native cultures were inseparable. Jesuit missionaries, for example, called both a plant and a native culture “wild rice,” conflating descriptions of local ecological and morphological features of the Great Lakes plant with accounts of indigenous cultural and moral attributes. Second, “Plants and Peoples” also analyzes the process by which the Paris-based Académie Royale des Sciences expanded its reach into North America and argues that French colonial naturalists drew on a vibrant conversation between diverse colonial and indigenous communities. Yet indigenous participation and the knowledges they provided were progressively effaced over the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This research therefore presents both a new understanding of the history of early modern and enlightenment botany and a lens through which to revisit and enrich familiar histories of cultural exchange in colonial North America.
