The career of the missed encounter in classic american literature

Rabhi, Wadia 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores the career of the Lacanian missed encounter in canonical nineteenth-century American literature through the lens of psychoanalysis, deconstruction, postmodernism, and postcolonialism. In particular, I concentrate on Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and Melville’s Moby-Dick, showing how they are invested in the narrative economy of the missed encounter, the economy of that which is beyond symbolization and assimilation. The introductory chapter investigates the historical, philosophical, and theoretical contours and detours of the concept of the missed encounter. This dissertation, then, has two goals: on the one hand, it attempts to examine the status and function of the missed encounter in nineteenth-century American literature, and on the other, it explores how theorizing the missed encounter might help us move beyond the binarist theorization that characterizes the current geopolitical scenes. My first chapter on Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter attempts to map the career of the signifier as a shuttling between the archive and the future, between the subject and the object, and between the signifier and the signified. The aim of this chapter is to account for the temporality of the signifier and the temporality of subjectivity and how they meet the temporality of the Tuché. By exploring the crypto-temporal dimension of the missed encounter, this chapter studies the excess of crypts through poetics (mainly prosopopeia, anasemia, and tropes of exhumation). The second chapter elaborates the contours of the missed encounter. This chapter approaches, from psychoanalytic and deconstructive viewpoints, the temporality of the missed encounter (the temporality of automaton and repetition). By exploring the narrative temporality (prolepsis and analepsis) in conjunction with the psycho-poetics of the double, this chapter attempts to lay bare the vicissitudes of melancholia and “narcissistic depression” in Moby-Dick (especially Ahab’s repetition of his unnarrated or disnarrated original encounter with the White Whale and his melancholic position in relation to the object he lost). By exposing the nature of trauma as a missed encounter, the residues of which manifest symptomatically through repetition (and doubling), this chapter explains the glissement of the letter (through the work of the supplement and différance). Chapter three broadens the scope of the missed encounter to the Others of America. The main purpose of this chapter is to assess the political, cultural, imaginary, and libidinal investitures of the missed encounter in the Real, the national Symbolic of the United States, and the current geopolitical reality. It also deals with the ambiguous relationship between jouissance and the Symbolic: the way in which jouissance animates and governs the Symbolic, while at the same time it blurs the boundary lines between the Real and reality and protects its excessive maneuvers.

From constellations to autoprohibition: everything you wanted to know about Adorno's ethics (but were afraid to ask Zizek)

Webb, Dan 06 1900 (has links)
This project is centered on two primary concerns. First, to reformulate Adornos notion of ethical subjectivity in a way that allows for a clearer articulation of his normative position, and second, to make it more relevant to our contemporary social context and advances in social theory. My claim is that we can achieve this by rejecting Adornos philosophical method (negative dialectics and constellations) by reading his ethics through the lens of ieks method which I am calling autoprohibition. As I will show, autoprohibition is ieks strategy for breaking the deadlock of the dialectic of enlightenment and its accompanying defeatist politics by developing a dialectical theory that neither rests on pure negation nor falls into the totalising and reifying trap of orthodox Marxism. It is in the context of autoprohibition that one can rearticulate Adornos normative imperatives (specifically, the imperative to end suffering, and to recognise the truth-content of the body) without these imperatives being negated by the totalising dictates of the dialectic of enlightenment. The best way to redeem the important normative components of Adornos formulation of ethical subjectivity is to reject its underlying philosophical method and resituate it in another. I frame this methodological shift as one from constellations to autoprohibition, which allows for a more positive articulation of Adornos ethics; a plan for actively practising an ethical life vs. one premised on the rejection of participating in an unethical system (which Adornos ethics amounts to on my account).

Sentidos da função paterna na educação

Cabistani, Roséli Maria Olabarriaga January 2007 (has links)
This thesis investigates the current discourses present in the education field and in the society in general, that denounce at the same time they promote the “lack of the father” in the authority exercise and the cares of the offspring. Such speeches emerge stimulated for the new familiar configurations, received as strange and threatening, being able to cause break in the social ties. It is possible to note there the fantasized effect that operates in the educative speech denouncing an anticipated failure, as effect of nostalgia of the traditional family, more and more distant from our reality. To investigate what produces this position of claim of a “strong father”, the author searches in the theory these answers. We elect interpreters of the social tie and its symptomatic expressions. For such, we displayed the issue of the paternal function, as it appears in Freud and Lacan works, searching to follow its incidence in the subject structuring, since the primordial abandonment. This work is a theoretical research that focus the senses that the new forms of exercise of the paternal function have for education, considered as social tie. With Freud, we follow the implications of the paternal function in the Oedipus complex and the approach of the temporality of the Oedipus in Lacan allowed to situate the father from the registers of the Imaginary, the Symbolic and the Real , in reference to the concept of phallus, as significant of the lack in the Other. Establishing as a theme the paternal function from these registers allowed to differentiate the symbolic paternal function, of the present fantasized in the imaginary dimension of the father, this that is meant as “lacking”. We use as empirical data, some cases, taken in their exemplarity, in the perspective of the subject of the paternal function. The thesis indicates that, the dialogue of psychoanalysis with education, allows demystifying fantasized inductive constructions of a last interpretation of the social symptoms, as this of the speech of the paternal lack. To use itself the plurality of the directions of the paternal function in education, is a form of the educators to make responsible for the educative act, in a position of opening to the historical contingencies that the vicissitudes of the social ties produce.

As neurosis is a defense strategy in face of castration, which particularities in the desiring relationships could lead to one typical form of defense or another? If the obsessive conflict unfolds eminently in the level of thought and the phobic in the level of reality (in the relationship with the phobic object), what could generate this difference? Aiming at clarifying some aspects of the role of the real father in structuring the child’s neurosis, it is necessary to observe the very development of the paternal function in its real, symbolic and imaginary levels; the relationship of the father with several other elements of the family’s dynamics: the desiring dynamics in the parental couple, the way that each of them relates to the law, the elements that interfere in those relationships, how the circulation of the phallus takes place in each case, among others. We have decided to carry out a bibliographical research and selected the clinical cases ‘Little Hans’ and ‘Rat Man’ as the fundamental basis of our discussion, as we believe that the analysis of what is most particular can unveil universal aspects of each structure. Furthermore, we start from the principle that the Freudian text is not exhausted in its possibilities of surprising us and offering new questions. We utilize the Lacanian contribution (in an initial moment of his teachings) and another reading of those clinical cases. Authors such as Jerusalinsk, Julien, Dor, Ambertín, Gazzola, Melman, among others, are also summoned to enrich our discussion. We investigate the similarities and the differences in the way that the father, in each case, has performed his function, which is dual: restrainer and model of identification, as well as his possible consequences on the subject, the subject’s way of dealing with desire and castration. In phobia, to delimitate and allay the anguish, the subject needs to resort to the phobic object as a supplement to the paternal function that appears in an insufficient form in the relationship mother-son. This object comes to provide limits to the subject’s world, to demarcate points of danger and to serve as support to a series of symbolic-imaginary elaborations which can render possible a meaningful change, as in Hans’ case, in which there was an analytical intervention. In the obsessive neurosis, there is a subject tormented by recurring thoughts and driven to rituals as attempts of protection in face of danger, permanently in conflict with the phallic instance, oscillating between the wish of transgressing it and the devoted submission. A law that, for the obsessive has become difficult to elaborate, perhaps because it has been put in excessive or ambiguous way in the desiring context of the child. In the obsessive, the passage from the ‘being’ to the ‘having’ becomes more problematic due to the message of maternal dissatisfaction in relation to the husband. That makes it difficult to the subject to give up on his imaginary phallic identification, while at the same time he recognizes the existence and fears the instance of the law. As to the phobic, it can be that he has been more at the mercy of maternal desire, without a third instance to protect him of the risk of annihilation. ‘Killing (the father) or dying’ is the obsessive’s impasse. ‘Escaping (the maternal pleasure) is the phobic’s effort. This way, we attempt to bring our contributions, to recognize paradox and leave unanswered some questions that arise along the process and that can serve as a starting point to future research. ‘Escapar (do gozo materno)’ é o esforço do fóbico.

Lacrime di frantumaglia : Verità letteraria nell'opera di Elena Ferrante / Tears of framtumaglia : Literary truth in the work of Elena Ferrante

Varricchio, Isabella January 2018 (has links)
This master thesis presents a study of the authorship of the Italian writer Elena Ferrante, focusing on hermain concepts “la frantumaglia” and “la smarginatura” in relation to the question of literary truth. Thepurpose is to examine the fascinating interaction between meta reflection and narration through anintratextual reading of her poetics elaborated in La frantumaglia (2013, 2016) and all novels publishedso far. With references to the theories of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, la frantumaglia and lasmarginatura are interpreted as the unconscious and different mental disorders that characterize the crisisof the female protagonists. The analysis examines literary truth on three literary levels: the verbal, considering the Neapolitan dialect related to the city of Naples as a representation of both maternalorigin and patriarchal oppression, the stylistic, viewing la smarginatura as literary style, and finally, thesymbolic, connected to what Ferrante calls the “symbolic sphere of the authentic”. Furthermore, anintellectual approach to truth is discussed as a contraposition to the others. In applying the methodologyof Michael Riffaterre, the analysis of the stylistic and symbolic truth dimensions shows how theiridiosyncratic traits are extended and transformed throughout the Ferrantian work. The thesis alsosuggests a different interpretation of the intimate relationship between mother and daughter, one of theauthorship’s central themes. Unlike previous studies with a psychoanalytical approach that affirms theexistence of a pre-oedipal phase free from patriarchal intrusion, this analysis demonstrates how Ferranterepeatedly reveals this idea as an infantile fantasy. Instead, the thesis argues that the only real synthesisis found at the level of writing itself, in the merging of the perspectives of the two protagonists in thecycle of L’amica geniale (The Neapolitan novels). This synthesis is further conceived as the authenticidentity of the anonymous author herself.

Bonfim, Leilane Gabriela de Souza 27 February 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work has dealt with the clinical Little Hans case - statement by Freud in 1909 - and aims to bring the dialogue between this theoretical and Jacques Lacan, with prints and case analysis. Specifically, the study aims to provide for the issue of child psychoanalysis and addressing the problem of phobia while symptomatic output. Considering the clinic with children as contemporary practice of psychoanalysis, there was a theoretical study, whose methodological dynamics was the literature, using mainly from Freud´s texts and Lacan. Therefore, the work is divided into three sections. The first brings the issue of child psychoanalysis, highlighting as it reaches the place of subject of desire and law, making it therefore possible to be analyzed. In addition, support for the next chapter in this first are brought some positions and functions assumed by the child in the family dynamics. The second chapter develops the dialogue between Freud and Lacan about Hans case, presenting the facts following the case, the chronology, the directions of Freud and Lacan considerations. Are treated some issues such as the relationship between Hans and his mother, the question of the paternal function, as well as the complex of Oedipus and castration in Hans. Finally, the third chapter is the phobia as symptomatic output, serving Hans as the means possible so that it is positioned in the world and enter in the symbolic order. Thus, issues are worked that concern the phobia, such as anxiety, anguish, symptomatic formation and its prospects and the specific clinical case, the focus on substitutive function assumed by the phobic symptom on the limping paternal function. We conclude the work by pointing out some directions for the relationship between the current children´s clinic and the symptom.

Le féminin et le maternel dans l'imaginaire occidental : le mythe de Shéhérazade en analyse / The feminine and the maternal in the occidental imagination : The myth of Scheherazade in analysis

Rifai, Nabila 14 November 2012 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the founding myth of the Arabian Nights, or « myth of Scheherazade », with a psychoanalytical and comparative approach. This research points that the frame story of the Nights is a mythical story that constitutes the mirror of the collective imagination, which reveals the place of the woman, the feminine and the maternal in the process of civilization. The Nights open on a double adultery and a double murder scene: two sultanas commit adultery with a black slave. This transgressive feminine desire is the trigger of the Arabian Nights' collection. It constitutes the original sin that leads to the forfeiture and the chaos. Shahrayar, such as the patriarch of the Freudian primal horde, decides to take revenge on them and institutes as a law the murder of women. The infinite word of Scheherazade, who is at the same time lover and mother, creates a transitional fertile space and leads the sultan to give up the temporally enjoyment to enter the field of the sublimation and symbolism. With the symbolic function of the language, the storyteller leads the tyrant to become parlêtre, subject to the fundamental laws of civilization. We examine the rewritings, imitations, pastiches, perversions, parodies, tragedies, continuations and musical adaptations of the myth of Scheherazade from eighteenth to the twenty-first century, to analyze the dialectic’s evolution of the feminine, the maternal and the symbolic laws.
