Kvinnans rätt till liv : En multimodal kritisk diskursanalys av aborträtt i RFSU:s externa kommunikation

Torbiörnsson, Ida January 2023 (has links)
ABSTRACTEnglish translation of the title: The woman’s right to life – A multimodal critical discourse analysis of abortions rights in RFSU: s external communication.  A topic that has sparked more controversy in recent times, is the abortion rights of women. Lately ideas surrounding the abolishment of abortion rights have been more normalized in society. Restrictive abortion laws have been implemented in countries such as the USA and Poland. The aim of this study was to investigate how the organization RFSU is communicating reproductive rights, specifically the abortion rights and abortion resilience discourse, as well as their organizational identity. The study also aimed to investigate how an organization can encourage people to engage and participate in a digital environment. To answer these aims, two main categories of theories were used. The first category focused on social movements theory and framing, which helps to understand how social movements are presented on social media. The second category focused on external communication and visual identity and provided a perspective on how an organization can use external communication to portray the abortion rights discourse and increase participation among recipients in digital social movements. A qualitative method was used, combining a multimodal critical discourse analysis process with Fairclough’s three-dimensional model. The results of the study showed that maternal mortality, abortion, and sexual information were common themes communicated on RFSU’s Instagram. The results also showed that the abortion rights discourse was usually mentioned in relation to the abortion resilience discourse. However, abortion rights were portrayed as necessary for women’s reproductive rights and threatened by the increasing prevalence of abortion resilience ideas in society. The abortion resilience discourse was represented as a problem due to the danger that restrictive abortion laws pose to women’s lives. Participation was encouraged using hashtags that encouraged people to forward the information on social media or took place in real life and afterwards posting on social media. The organizational identity was portrayed using the same red colour and realistic photos, creating recognition for the organization. In conclusion, abortion rights were portrayed as necessary due to the increasing prevalence of abortion resilience ideas in the world.  Keywords: Abortion, Abortion rights, Multimodal critical discourse analysis, external organization communication, Participation

Elbilen och den gröna marknadsföringsparadoxen : En kritisk multimodal diskursanalys av elbilsreklam / The Electric Car and the Green Marketing Paradox : A Critical Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Electric Car Advertising

Eriksson, Ida January 2023 (has links)
How do commercials contribute to producing and reproducing climate discourses in society? By examining three Swedish commercials that market electric cars, the study aims to increase the understanding of how advertising interacts with the public's views on environmental issues. The car brands are Kia, Volkswagen and Volvo. Based on theoretical perspectives on green capitalism, green utopias and industrial fatalism, the study aims to reveal the discourses that are embedded in the commercials, as well as to reveal the strategies that the automotive industry uses to position electric cars as a solution to the climate crisis. The study uses a critical multimodal discourse analysis to analyze the commercials' visual, auditory and textual elements. The results offer valuable insights for marketers, policy makers and researchers interested in the interplay between advertising and sustainability discourses, as well as contributing to the field of environmental communication.

Hur multimodal matematikundervisning påverkar elevers motivation och inlärning / How Multimodal Mathematics Effects Pupils Motivation and Learning

Lissvall, Ronja, Gren Ekvall, Julia January 2023 (has links)

Analysis of data from multimodal chemical characterizations of plant tissues

Diehn, Sabrina Maria 28 July 2021 (has links)
The pre-processing and analysis of spectrometric and spectroscopic data of plant tissue are important in a wide variety of research areas, such as plant biology, agricultural science, and climate research. The focus of the thesis is the optimized utilization of data from plant tissues, which includes data from Matrix-Assisted-Laser Desorption/Ionization time of flight mass spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The ability to attain a classification using these methods is compared, in particular after combination of the data with each other and with additional chemical and biological information. The discussed examples are concerned with the investigation and classification within a particular plant species, such as the distinction of samples from different populations, growth conditions, or tissue substructures. The data were analyzed by exploratory tools such as principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis, as well as by predictive tools that included partial least square-discriminant analysis and machine learning approaches. Specifically, the results show that combination of the methods with additional plant-related information in a consensus principal component analysis leads to a comprehensive characterization of the samples. Different data pre-treatment strategies are discussed to reduce non-relevant spectral information, e.g., from maps of plant tissues or embedded pollen grains. The results in this work indicate the relevance of the targeted utilization of spectrometric and spectroscopic data and could be applied not only to plant-related topics but also to other analytical classification problems.

Autonomistödjande bilder - "en kunskapslucka" : En kvalitativ studie om bildstödets påverkan på klienters delaktighet vid utredningar i socialt arbete / Autonomy supporting images - "a knowledge gap" : A qualitative study on the impact of image-support on clients participation in investigations in social work

Ivansson, David, Ahsani, Ali January 2024 (has links)
This thesis examines the use of visual aids in the social services' investigative conversations with guardians with limited knowledge of the Swedish language. Through a qualitative research approach, in which interviews with experienced social workers are central, this thesis aims to understand how visual aids can promote participation, communication efficiency, and contribute to an autonomy-supportive process. The study attempts to contribute to an increased understanding of the opportunities and challenges of visual aids, which is anchored in theoretical frameworks, inclusive symbolic interactionism and the concepts of communication and participation. The analysis is based on interviews that explore the social workers' perceptions and experiences of the role and effectiveness of visual aids. The study's results illustrate that the use of visual aids is primarily directed towards work with children and individuals with cognitive difficulties, rather than adults with language deficiencies, which reveals a significant knowledge gap. However, the results indicate that visual aids can be a valuable tool for improving communication and promoting clients' participation in the investigation process. For future research, a more in-depth analysis is suggested on how visual aids can be adapted and integrated within the routines and workflows of social services.

López Navarrete, Alberto Jesús 19 February 2024 (has links)
[EN] The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the adaptation to remote work, leading to significant changes in the academic environment. The academic community has normalized participation in conferences through computer screens. The aim of this study is to analyze the elements involved in oral discourse during digital conference papers to identify the communication patterns most commonly used by researchers. Since the early 21st century, several authors have explored this discursive genre, considering it the oral counterpart of scientific articles. These authors advocate for more attention to oral genres, considering them understudied in comparison to written academic genres. This study employs Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA). This methodology understands that a comprehensive understanding of communication can only be achieved by considering all elements of discourse. Merely focusing on what is said (language) does not reveal the full meaning. Therefore, MDA advocates for the analysis of visual aspects, language, and gestures of the speaker. The results highlight the prominence of slides in discourse, the development of a pattern for discourse structure, and the limited relevance of gestures, which are barely perceived by the camera. These findings provide insights into communication models in digital conferences and draw attention to the most pressing elements that need to be addressed to enhance effective communication through computers and webcams. / López Navarrete, AJ. [pt] APRIMORANDO A SÍNTESE DE IMAGENS A PARTIR DE TEXTO UTILIZANDO TRANSFERÊNCIA DE APRENDIZADO U2C / [en] IMPROVING TEXT-TO-IMAGE SYNTHESIS WITH U2C - TRANSFER LEARNING

VINICIUS GOMES PEREIRA 06 February 2024 (has links)
[en] Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are unsupervised models that can learn from an indefinitely large amount of images. On the other hand, models that generate images from language queries depend on high-quality labeled data that is scarce. Transfer learning is a known technique that alleviates the need for labeled data, though it is not trivial to turn an unconditional generative model into a text-conditioned one. This work proposes a simple, yet effective fine-tuning approach, called Unconditional-to-Conditional Transfer Learning (U2C transfer). It can leverage well-established pre-trained models while learning to respect the given textual condition conditions. We evaluate U2C transfer efficiency by fine-tuning StyleGAN2 in two of the most widely used text-to-image data sources, generating the Text-Conditioned StyleGAN2 (TC-StyleGAN2). Our models quickly achieved state-of-the-art results in the CUB-200 and Oxford-102 datasets, with FID values of 7.49 and 9.47, respectively. These values represent relative gains of 7 percent and 68 percent compared to prior work. We show that our method is capable of learning fine-grained details from text queries while producing photorealistic and detailed images. Our findings highlight that the images created using our proposed technique are credible and display a robust alignment with their corresponding textual descriptions.

Context-based Multimodal Machine Learning on Game Oriented Data for Affective State Recognition / Kontextbaserad multimodal maskininlärning på spelorienterad data för affektivt tillståndsigenkänning

Corneliussen, Ilian January 2021 (has links)
Affective computing is an essential part of Human-Robot Interaction, where knowing the human’s emotional state is crucial to create an interactive and adaptive social robot. Previous work has mainly been focusing on using unimodal or multimodal sequential models for Affective State Recognition. However, few have included context-based information with their models to boost performance. In this paper, context-based features are tested on a multimodal Gated Recurrent Unit model with late fusion on game oriented data. It shows that using context-based features such as game state can significantly increase the performance of sequential multimodal models on game oriented data.

Automated Multimodal Emotion Recognition / Automatiserad multimodal känsloigenkänning

Fernández Carbonell, Marcos January 2020 (has links)
Being able to read and interpret affective states plays a significant role in human society. However, this is difficult in some situations, especially when information is limited to either vocal or visual cues. Many researchers have investigated the so-called basic emotions in a supervised way. This thesis holds the results of a multimodal supervised and unsupervised study of a more realistic number of emotions. To that end, audio and video features are extracted from the GEMEP dataset employing openSMILE and OpenFace, respectively. The supervised approach includes the comparison of multiple solutions and proves that multimodal pipelines can outperform unimodal ones, even with a higher number of affective states. The unsupervised approach embraces a traditional and an exploratory method to find meaningful patterns in the multimodal dataset. It also contains an innovative procedure to better understand the output of clustering techniques.
