Behavioral Model and Predistortion Algorithm to Mitigate Interpulse Instabilities Induced by Gallium Nitride Power Amplifiers in Multifunction Radars

The incorporation of Gallium Nitride (GaN) Power Amplifiers (PAs) into future high power aperture radar systems is certain; however, the introduction of this technology into multifunction radar systems will present new challenges to radar engineers. This dissertation describes a broad investigation into amplitude and phase transients produced by GaN PAs when they are excited with multifunction radar waveforms. These transients are the result of self-heating electrothermal memory effects and are manifested as interpulse instabilities that can negatively impact the coherent processing of multiple pulses. A behavioral model based on a Foster network topology has been developed to replicate the measured amplitude and phase transients accurately. This model has been used to develop a digital predistortion technique that successfully mitigates the impact of the transients. The Moving Target Indicator (MTI) Improvement Factor and the Root Mean Square (RMS) Pulse-to-Pulse Stability are used as metrics to assess the impact of the transients on radar system performance and to test the effectiveness of a novel digital predistortion concept. / Ph. Collaborative applications used in a wireless environment at sea for use in Coast Guard Law Enforcement and Homeland Security missions

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This thesis analyzes the potential impact of incorporating wireless technologies, specifically an 802.11 mesh layer architecture and 802.16 Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, in order to effectively and more efficiently transmit data and create a symbiotic operational picture between Coast Guard Cutters, their boarding teams, Coast Guard Operation Centers, and various external agencies. Two distinct collaborative software programs, Groove Virtual Office and the Naval Postgraduate School's Situational Awareness Agent, are utilized over the Tactical Mesh and OFDM network configurations to improve the Common Operating Picture of involved units within a marine environment to evaluate their potential impact for the Coast Guard. This is being done to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of Coast Guard units while they carry out their Law Enforcement and Homeland Security Missions. 應急行動通訊系統設計 / Design of contingency cellular network

當大型災害來臨,通訊系統對救災效益具有不可或缺的重要性。然而,一般公眾通訊系統,如行動通訊網路等,常因各種不同因素導致系統攤瘓,使得協調大批非組織的救災志工,顯得異常困難。現存多個緊急通訊系統的佈建,需仰頼良好的交通運輸。不幸的是,部分道路和橋樑常因大型災害而斷裂或變型,導致災區對外交通運輸中斷,無法快速的將緊急通訊系統的網路元件,運送至災區佈建。我們提出應急行動通訊系統(Contingency Cellular Network, CCN) 以提供災區救災工作的緊急通訊。部分行動基地台雖然結構完整,但因失去與核心網路連線能力或電力供應,而無法提供服務,成為孤立基地台。應急行動通訊網路(CCN) 搭配無線通訊與衛星通訊技術建置一多重跳接無線網路,以恢復孤立基地台與核心網路連線能力;並配備發電機,提供電力,使孤立基地台可提供有限的服務。救災志工和災民無需使用特殊手持設備或額外的訓練,只需使用原有的手機,即可使用CCN的應急通訊服務。CCN可於第一時間,提供大批救災志工和災民通訊服務,以提高救災效益,因而拯救更多寶貴的生命。 本論文主要聚焦在應急行動通訊系統設計所衍生出的相關議題,如 應急網路需求分析、系統架構設計、網路拓樸規劃、網路頻寬規劃、佈署行程規劃等議題。本論文針對網路拓樸規劃、網路頻寬規劃、佈署行程規劃問題以數學模式進行塑模並證明這些問題為NP-Hard問題。因網路拓樸規劃、網路頻寬規劃、佈署行程規劃需緊急完成,我們也提出啟發式算法快速解決這些規劃問題。實驗結果顯示,這些啟發式算法均具良好的效能。 / Communication system is crucial to the efficiency of disaster response operation in the large-scale disaster. However, communication systems, such as cellular networks, usually crashed due to various causes making coordination among disorganized disaster responders extremely difficult. Unfortunately, rapid deployment of many existing emergency communication systems relies on a good transportation system, which is usually not available in a catastrophic natural disaster. We proposed a Contingency Cellular Network (CCN) for emergency communication by connecting disconnected base stations together with wireless links to construct a wireless multi-hop cellular network. CCN can support existing mobile phone users with reduced capability. Such a system can support a large number of disaster responders in the early hours of a catastrophic natural disaster, thus save many lives. Our research addresses the design issues of the network topology of CCN, such as network topology planning, bandwidth management, deployment scheduling and etc., and we take the degree of emergency and population of each stricken area as the priority measure as well as the available resources as the constraint to determine the network topology. Mathematical models of these design issues are proposed and proved as NP-Hard problems. Since the network topology, bandwidth management, deployment scheduling are needed in urgent, we propose heuristic algorithms to solve these problems quickly. Finally, we evaluated the proposed algorithms by simulation. A significant improvement in resiliency is reached.

Aujourd’hui les réseaux électriques sont exploités dans un marché dérégulé. Les gestionnaires des réseaux électriques sont tenus d’assurer un certain nombre de critères de fiabilité et de continuité du service, tout en minimisant le coût total consacré aux efforts effectués pour maintenir la fiabilité des installations. Il s’agit de trouver une stratégie, qui répond à plusieurs exigences, comme :le coût, les performances, la législation, les exigences du régulateur, etc. Cependant, le processus de prise de décision est subjectif, car chaque participant ramène sa contribution sur base de sa propre expérience. Bien que ce processus permette de trouver la « meilleure » stratégie, cette dernière n’est pas forcément la stratégie « optimale ». Ce compromis technico-économique a sensibilisé les gestionnaires des réseaux électriques à la nécessité d’un recours à des outils d’aide à la décision, qui doivent se baser sur des nouvelles approches quantitatives et une modélisation plus proches de la réalité physique.<p>Cette thèse rentre dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche lancé par ELIA, et dénommé COMPRIMa (Cost-Optimization Models for the Planning of the Renewal, Inspection, and Maintenance of Belgian power system facilities). Ce projet vise à développer une méthodologie qui permet de modéliser une partie du réseau électrique de transport (par les réseaux de Petri stochastiques) et de simuler son comportement dynamique sur un horizon donné (simulation de Monte Carlo). L’évaluation des indices de fiabilité permet de comparer les différents scénarios qui tentent d’améliorer les performances de l’installation. L’approche proposée est basée sur la stratégie RCM (Reliability-Centered Maintenance).<p>La méthodologie développée dans cette thèse permet une modélisation plus réaliste du réseau qui tient compte, entre autres, des aspects suivants :<p>- La corrélation quantitative entre le processus de maintenance et le processus de vieillissement des composants (par un modèle d’âge virtuel) ;<p>- Les dépendances liées à l’aspect multi-composant du système, qui tient compte des modes de défaillance spécifiques des systèmes de protection ;<p>- L’aspect économique lié à la stratégie de maintenance (inspection, entretien, réparation, remplacement), aux coupures (programmées et forcées) et aux événements à risque (refus disjoncteur, perte d’un client, perte d’un jeu de barres, perte d’une sous-station, etc.). / Doctorat en sciences appliquées / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Can local-community-paradigm and epitopological learning enhance our understanding of how local brain connectivity is able to process, learn and memorize chronic pain?

The mystery behind the origin of the pain and the difficulty to propose methodologies for its quantitative characterization fascinated philosophers (and then scientists) from the dawn of our modern society. Nowadays, studying patterns of information flow in mesoscale activity of brain networks is a valuable strategy to offer answers in computational neuroscience. In this paper, complex network analysis was performed on the time-varying brain functional connectomes of a rat model of persistent peripheral neuropathic pain, obtained by means of local field potential and spike train analysis. A wide range of topological network measures (14 in total, the code is publicly released at: https://github.com/biomedical-cybernetics/topological_measures_wide_analysis) was employed to quantitatively investigate the rewiring mechanisms of the brain regions responsible for development and upkeep of pain along time, from three hours to 16 days after nerve injury. The time trend (across the days) of each network measure was correlated with a behavioural test for rat pain, and surprisingly we found that the rewiring mechanisms associated with two local topological measure, the local-community-paradigm and the power-lawness, showed very high statistical correlations (higher than 0.9, being the maximum value 1) with the behavioural test. We also disclosed clear functional connectivity patterns that emerged in association with chronic pain in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and ventral posterolateral (VPL) nuclei of thalamus. This study represents a pioneering attempt to exploit network science models in order to elucidate the mechanisms of brain region re-wiring and engram formations that are associated with chronic pain in mammalians. We conclude that the local-community-paradigm is a model of complex network organization that triggers a local learning rule, which seems associated to processing, learning and memorization of chronic pain in the brain functional connectivity. This rule is based exclusively on the network topology, hence was named epitopological learning.

Návrh optické přístupové sítě FTTx / FTTx network design

The main goal of this diploma thesis was to implement the proposal of optical access networks in the selected location. Introduce is focused on the physical layer of network. This includes optical fibers, optical cables, connectors, optical splitters, and more. According to the place of termination of optical fiber will be studied best FTTx connections. According to network topology distinguished point to point and point to multipoint network. Networks points to point are also known as an active optical network and for each user are restricted to a separate fiber. Point to multipoint networks known as passive optical network. In terms of the PON is defined by many standards. For a selected location will be choice the most appropriate solution. Finally, the measurement will be made and will be considered for monitoring the route. Before the design of optical access networks, I made an illustrative simulation in program OptSim. Performed simulations helps to study the transmission characters of optical networks, depending on the physical architecture. In general, for the design of high-capabilities networks for large companies will be more appropriate active topology that provides due wavelength multiplexes high transmission capacity. To join in the urban areas with a large number of separate houses, it is more appropriate use of passive topology. For the design of optical networks has been selected location with multiple housing buildings. The end customer is not given the requirement for high data transfer rates as large companies. For the proposal was selected FTTB networks which is suitable because of lower costs. The second variant of the proposal was a passive optical network according to standard GPON. This standard was chosen because of the high splitting ratio. For both solutions was developed the entire proposal by ITU-T with a detailed drawing documentation. In the selected area was conducted measuring the optical networks in order to verify the possibility of extension actual solutions. For a sample issue of measurements, I made several measurements using optical reflectometer over an optical splitter in order to prove the need for measurements during construction. FTTH networks gaining in popularity more and more, but price is the limiting factor.

La thèse propose un modèle dynamique pour le système bancaire avec une banque centrale afin de calculer un indicateur de faillite en fonction de la probabilité qu'une banque soit en faillite et les pertes rencontrées dans le réseau financier, une méthodologie qui peut améliorer la mesure, le suivi et la gestion du risque systémique.La thèse propose également des mécanismes de compensation : 1- avec un modèle considérant l'ancienneté du passif et avec un type d'actif liquide dont la vente excessive conduit à un impact sur le marché, 2 - avec un modèle considérant les participations croisées entres les banques dont les engagements interbancaires sont de différentes séniorités et avec un type d'actif liquide dont la vente excessive conduit à un impact sur le marché. / Financial crisis pose important theoretical problems on creating reliable indicator of stability of financial systems on which basis the regulators could intervene. The thesis proposes a dynamic model of banking system were the central bank can calculate an indicator of potential defaults taking into consideration the probability for a bank to default and the losses encountered in the financial network, a methodology that can improve the measurement, monitoring, and the management of the systemic risk. The thesis also suggests a clearing mechanisms : 1- in a model with seniority of liabilities and one type of liquid asset whose fire sale has a market impact, 2 - in a model with crossholdings among the banks whose interbank liabilities may be senior and junior and with one liquid asset whose firing sale has a market impact.

Analysis and waveform relaxation for a differential-algebraic electrical circuit model

Die Hauptthemen dieser Arbeit sind einerseits eine tiefgehende Analyse von nichtlinearen differential-algebraischen Gleichungen (DAEs) vom Index 2, die aus der modifizierten Knotenanalyse (MNA) von elektrischen Schaltkreisen hervorgehen, und andererseits die Entwicklung von Konvergenzkriterien für Waveform Relaxationsmethoden zum Lösen gekoppelter Probleme. Ein Schwerpunkt in beiden genannten Themen ist die Beziehung zwischen der Topologie eines Schaltkreises und mathematischen Eigenschaften der zugehörigen DAE. Der Analyse-Teil umfasst eine detaillierte Beschreibung einer Normalform für Schaltkreis DAEs vom Index 2 und Abschätzungen, die für die Sensitivität des Schaltkreises bezüglich seiner Input-Quellen folgen. Es wird gezeigt, wie diese Abschätzungen wesentlich von der topologischen Position der Input-Quellen im Schaltkreis abhängen. Die zunehmend komplexen Schaltkreise in technologischen Geräten erfordern oftmals eine Modellierung als gekoppeltes System. Waveform relaxation (WR) empfiehlt sich zur Lösung solch gekoppelter Probleme, da sie auf die Subprobleme angepasste Lösungsmethoden und Schrittweiten ermöglicht. Es ist bekannt, dass WR zwar bei Anwendung auf gewöhnliche Differentialgleichungen konvergiert, falls diese eine Lipschitz-Bedingung erfüllen, selbiges jedoch bei DAEs nicht ohne Hinzunahme eines Kontraktivitätskriteriums sichergestellt werden kann. Wir beschreiben allgemeine Konvergenzkriterien für WR auf DAEs vom Index 2. Für den Fall von Schaltkreisen, die entweder mit anderen Schaltkreisen oder mit elektromagnetischen Feldern verkoppelt sind, leiten wir außerdem hinreichende topologische Konvergenzkriterien her, die anhand von Beispielen veranschaulicht werden. Weiterhin werden die Konvergenzraten des Jacobi WR Verfahrens und des Gauss-Seidel WR Verfahrens verglichen. Simulationen von einfachen Beispielsystemen zeigen drastische Unterschiede des WR-Konvergenzverhaltens, abhängig davon, ob die Konvergenzbedingungen erfüllt sind oder nicht. / The main topics of this thesis are firstly a thorough analysis of nonlinear differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) of index 2 which arise from the modified nodal analysis (MNA) for electrical circuits and secondly the derivation of convergence criteria for waveform relaxation (WR) methods on coupled problems. In both topics, a particular focus is put on the relations between a circuit's topology and the mathematical properties of the corresponding DAE. The analysis encompasses a detailed description of a normal form for circuit DAEs of index 2 and consequences for the sensitivity of the circuit with respect to its input source terms. More precisely, we provide bounds which describe how strongly changes in the input sources of the circuit affect its behaviour. Crucial constants in these bounds are determined in terms of the topological position of the input sources in the circuit. The increasingly complex electrical circuits in technological devices often call for coupled systems modelling. Allowing for each subsystem to be solved by dedicated numerical solvers and time scales, WR is an adequate method in this setting. It is well-known that while WR converges on ordinary differential equations if a Lipschitz condition is satisfied, an additional convergence criterion is required to guarantee convergence on DAEs. We present general convergence criteria for WR on higher index DAEs. Furthermore, based on our results of the analysis part, we derive topological convergence criteria for coupled circuit/circuit problems and field/circuit problems. Examples illustrate how to practically check if the criteria are satisfied. If a sufficient convergence criterion holds, we specify at which rate of convergence the Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel WR methods converge. Simulations of simple benchmark systems illustrate the drastically different convergence behaviour of WR depending on whether or not the circuit topological convergence conditions are satisfied.
