The trajectory of life of many women leads to the construction of meanings about being a mother and adoption is one of the options to realize this motherhood. From the studies on femininity and motherhood, the place that the child occupies in the relationship with the adoptive mother is discussed. But, still in contemporary society, this relationship appears imbued with myths and prejudices, which can often lead to a project of adoption to failure. In the midst of all the complexity of the adoption process, it can happen that the adopted child is returned, a situation that is not rare these days. This devolution occurs when family conflicts make cohabitation unsustainable, making it clear that the family has had difficulty inserting this child as a son or daughter. Before the vicissitudes that involve the exercise of motherhood in adoption, the present study has the object of research the experience of women who faced the return of children adopted by them. Therefore, it has as main objective to understand how is the articulation of the return of adopted children and adolescents and the process of construction of the motherhood of adoptive mothers, approaching the concept of ambivalence of Cultural Psychology. For this understanding, we sought to: identify the reasons that led these mothers to adopt a child; identify the reasons pointed out by them for the return of that adopted child; analyze the emotional repercussions for the adoptive mother who decides to return an adopted child; explore the expectations of the future of the mothers who adopted and decided to return the adopted child. The research was developed in the descriptive qualitative approach, using the narrative interview and internet case reports. An interview was recorded with the participant who lived the experience of adopting and returning the child, having signed the Term of Free and Informed Consent and the study approved by the Research Ethics Committee of UCSal. Also, seventeen cases were reported, on the internet, about adoptive mothers who faced the same experience of adopting and returning the child. The data obtained were part of a multiple case study and were treated by content analysis by thematic categories. The main findings are the reasons that led the women to decide to adopt a child: infertility; the search for changes in the routine of the spouses; altruism and belief in one's own goodness; the need to give meaning to life. Regarding the reasons indicated by the mothers for the return of the children adopted by them: the behavior presented by the child during family life; the expectation of the adopter regarding the demonstration of love and gratitude; reference to the child's origin. Regarding the emotional repercussions for the adoptive mother who returns the adopted child, it was verified that the most striking feeling is that of guilt. It was also thought that adoptive mothers might tend to postpone or give up on a new adoption after returning the child. It is concluded that the return is a direct consequence of difficulties encountered in the exercise of adoptive motherhood. Finally, the research points to the need for studies on the adoption, in particular, about returning children to adoption, in order for the theme to gain more visibility.

A descriptive study of the adoption experience of adolescents and their families

Gamlin, Sandra J. January 1985 (has links)
A descriptive study was conducted to investigate the adoption experience within the family. Adoptive families who participated in this study were assumed to be a relatively heterogeneous sample of the target population - families with at least one adopted child who had been adopted early in life, and who was presently 14-18 years of age. Thirteen adoptive families participated in the study. Qualitative data regarding each individual's perception of the adoption experience was obtained through semi-structured interviews. Each participant also completed the Family Environment Scale (Moos, 1974), which was used as a descriptive measure only. Data from the interviews underwent a qualitative data analysis to arrive at the themes and patterns that described the adoptee's and the adoptive parents' experiences. Parent-child perceptual discrepancies were also analysed to assess the similarities and the differences in family perceptions regarding the adoption experience. Conclusions that can be drawn based on the results of the qualitative analysis is that adoptive families appear to be vulnerable to problems during the adolescent stage of the family life cycle because of the adoptee's emerging curiosity and the problems of openly communicating these concerns within the family. Results from this study also point to the need for adopting couples to receive education regarding the role of adoptive parenthood, and counsellors who work with adoptive families should be aware of when the factors of adoption can contribute to family difficulties and dysfunction / Education, Faculty of / Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of / Graduate

Differences in Mother and Father Perceptions, Interactions and Responses to Intervention with a Special-needs Adoptive Child.

Meland, Angela M. 08 1900 (has links)
Parents' perceptions of their child's behavior may differ for mothers and fathers. Differences in parental perception may also be apparent in cases of special needs adoptive families with high demands of their child for time, interventions and attention. This paper examines the differences in mother-child and father-child interactions, child behavior as reported by mothers, and fathers and changes in both after participation in an intervention program. Results suggest notable differences between mothers' and fathers' parent-child interaction scores and reports of child behavior. In addition, interaction scores and behavior reports showed some correlations. Finally, there seemed to be notable differences in the trends for the Child Behavior Checklist compared to the two attachment measures (Randolph Attachment Disorder Questionnaire and Beech Brook Attachment Disorder Checklist). Several possible explanations for mother and father differences are discussed.

: En studie om äldre aktiva i gåfotboll och innebandy+ / Physical literacy through team sport – the way to lifelong sport participation? : A study about elderly active in walking football and floorball

Rönnblad, Jenny January 2023 (has links)
Globally the population is aging as well as the physical inactivity increases. This creates several problemsboth for societies and individuals. A part of the problem of physical inactivity is the lack of options ofphysical activity for elderly. Beyond the physical inactivity elderly also tend to experience loneliness which can be antagonized with participation in a sport club. As a response to the problem the Swedish Football Association and the Swedish Floorball Association has ongoing work where the sport is adaptedfor elderly. The aim of the study is to examine physical active elderly’s physical literacy through adapted team sport for elderly. Therefore, it’s questioned what makes participation in the adapted team sports meaningful for elderly. Also, it’s questioned what they would think about introducing competition in the adapted team sport as well as what the differences between the two sports are. This was examined through focus groups, which included 27 elderly women and men with an age over 62 years active in team sports in different parts of Sweden. As a help to understand the complexity of what’s important to create lifelong sport participation among elderly a theoretically framework has been used. The framework is physical literacy which initiates to approach physical activity with a more holistic perspective. The result shows small differences between the sports and that the participators seem to be a homogenous group. They mainly thought that the physical activity in combination with the fellowshipmade participation in adapted team sport meaningful. It also showed that elderly that participated in the sports evolved their physical literacy, which means that adapted team sports might be the way to lifelong sport participation among elderly.

The Communication Implications And Related Experiences Associated With Transracially Adopting A Child From Vietnam

Malin, Lan Marie 01 January 2010 (has links)
This study investigated the communication experiences of adoptive parents of children transracially adopted from Vietnam. Though adoption has been extensively studied in communication research, transracial adoptions involving children from Vietnam has not. Thus, this study examined adoptive parent communication experiences using dialectic theory and relational dialectics. By examining adoptive parents’ communication with their adopted child and others, we can determine tensions that occur in different communication experiences. Data were collected through eight qualitative in-depth interviews conducted with adoptive parents of children from Vietnam. Openness with both strangers and the adopted child(ren) and preservation of key aspects of the adopted children’s original culture emerged as themes in adoptive parent communication. Theoretical implications of these findings are discussed.

Byt land, in med en hjälpande hand? : En stuide om vilka typer av stöderåtgärder som förmedelas via svenska adoptionsorganisationers till adoptivföräldrar som adopterar barn med funktionsnedsätting / Switch countries, in with a helping hand? : A study on the types of support measures that are provided via Swedish adoption organizations to adoptive parents who adopt children with disabilities

Nielsen, Nayanika, Lind, Amanda January 2024 (has links)
This study aims to investigate and analyze the support that swedish adoption agencies offer adoptive parents who adopt children with and without disabilities, and analyzes the importange of this support from a psychological perspective. Adoption takes place through authorized adoption organizations that are governed by laws and conventions to ensure the best interests of the child in the adoption process. Given the need for more research and development within the field of adoption to increase understanding of adoptive parents who adopt children with disabilities. The reault of the study showed that the support is equal for adopted children with and without disabilities, which, according to previous research, indicates a significant deficiency that impacts the attachment and development of both adoptive parents and adopted children.

Veerkragtigheid in die enkelouer-transrasgesin

Oosthuizen, Marita 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Families with a transracially adopted child are confronted with normal family crises, crises due to the adoption as well as challenges specific to a transracial family. When this transracial family is a single-parent family, it could be assumed that the challenges the family faces will be even more. Consequently, the need developed to investigate characteristics and family patterns which contribute to family adaptation in crises in the single-parent family where a child from a different race than the parent has been adopted. The research question in this study was: “What are resilience factors in single-parent transracial families?” The strength perspective formed the basis of this study and the theories of Walsh (2003) and McCubbin and McCubbin (1996) provided the theoretical grounding. An explorative research design was used to address the research question. Data were collected by means of semistructured interviews and conventional content analysis was performed to analyse the data by using the Atlas.ti. computer program. Interviews were conducted with six white women who adopted a child or children from a different race than themselves. These women were all single parents living in the Western Cape, South Africa. At the time of the study, the ages of these transracially adopted children ranged from three to 10 years. A biographical questionnaire and an in-depth interview with each participant were used to collect the data. The results indicated that an important resilience factor in the transracially adopted family is equipping the adopted child with specific skills to cope with crises that may result due to his/her unique situation. Effective preparation of the adoptive mother before adoption, social contact and the support of the extended family were also found to be important resilience factors. Family routines, openness about the adoption and the utilisation of external resources were identified as important sources of resilience for the single-parent transracial family. The results of this study provide important information to the potential transracially adopting parent to prepare him/herself for transracial adoption. The results of this study also provide important information to everyone involved in transracial adoption (for example the social worker) in South-Africa.

"... så här är det bara" : Adoptivföräldrars tankar och känslor om barnets bakgrund / "... that´s just the way it is" : Thoughts and feelings of adoptive parents regarding the background of their children

Kim, Lovisa January 2014 (has links)
Adoptive parents need to be able to reflect on the interaction with the child, both from the perspective of their own relational experience with the child and from the perspective of the previous experience of the child. This essay explores five adoptive parent´s thoughts and feelings about their children’s background. It also looks into how they think that the children’s background influences their way of expressing their needs and how this makes the parents feel. Data has been collected through semi-structured interviews which have been analyzed using thematic analysis. The thoughts and feelings around the children’s background mainly concerns how the children were taken care of prior to the adoption and the birth parents. The parents expressed feelings of sadness and sorrow regarding how the children were taken care of prior to the adoption. Thinking of how it could have been for the children gave rise to strong emotions. The parents expressed sympathy and sorrow but also rivalry, envy and anger towards the birth parents. They describe different behaviors’ and expressions that the children have and how they think that these may be related to the experiences the children had prior to the adoption. The parents describe what the children’s behaviors and expressions arouse within themselves. They tell about strong somatic and dissociative reactions, feelings of guilt, uncertainty and insufficiency. The parents also describe how the interaction with their children reminds them of painful experiences from their own childhood. The accounts show the importance of the parents´ ability to mentalise and how they think about needs that the children don´t express.
