The concept of autochthony in Euripides' Phoenissae

Sanders, Kyle Austin 05 September 2014 (has links)
Euripides’ Phoenissae is a challenging work that is often overlooked by scholars of Greek drama. This study analyzes how the concept of autochthony occupies a central thematic concern of the play. On the one hand, autochthony unites humans to soil, political claims to myths, and present to past. On the other hand, autochthony was often invoked to exclude foreigners, women and exiles from political life at Athens. We observe a similar dichotomy in the Phoenissae. Autochthony unites the episode action–the story of the fraternal conflict—with the very different subject matter of the choral odes, which treat the founding myths of Thebes. By focalizing the lyric material through the perspective of marginalized female voices (Antigone and the chorus), Euripides is able to problematize the myths and rhetoric associated with autochthony. At the same time, Antigone’s departure with her father at the play’s close offers a transformation of autochthonous power into a positive religious entity. I suggest that a careful examination of the many facets of autochthony can inform our understanding of the Phoenissae with respect to dramatic structure, apparent Euripidean innovations, character motivation, stage direction and audience reception. / text

Gilles Deleuze et Antonin Artaud : L'impossibilité de penser / Gilles Deleuze and Antonin Artaud : Impossibility of thinking

Bouillon, Anne 19 January 2013 (has links)
In the thought of Deleuze, the poetry of Antonin Artaud seems like the line of convergence par excellence from which all the Deleuzian proliferation of concepts are developed. Indeed, Artaud is the person who shatters the image of thought – or what we usually mean by " thinking " in philosophy – rejecting its innateness and universality, in other words, the cogitatio natura universalis. Because, for both Artaud and Deleuze, thought is most often confronted by its real problem – its powerlessness or its impossibility. So the first part of the thesis deals with understanding the dismissal of the image of thought in Deleuze's Difference and Repetition, from Artaud's notion of " génital inné " [innate sexuality] in the Correspondence with Jacques Rivière. If the image of thought says nothing about the process of thinking, of what logic are we capable ? Through the discovery of the paradoxical logic deployed in the paradoxes in Deleuze's Logic of Sense, it is a matter of thinking about the connection between Artaud and Nietzsche. The main thrust of this section is a critique of the judgement made by Artaud. Lastly, thrown into the paradoxes of life, the third part considers the great non thought of philosophy, that is the body : indeed, of what body are we capable ? The challenge, the impossibility of thinking about the question of the body - comparing Spinoza's Ethics and Artaud's body without organs - is to reconnect thought with life, in accordance with the intention of Neitzsche's Gai saber [The Gay Science] and that Artaud did not cease to revise from his earliest writings. The impossibility of thought implies not only a separation from life, but also the unthinkable that is the body: indeed, does this mean talk of our own body as we experience it ? To what extent does the creation of a rhizome of concepts in A Thousand Plateaux by Deleuze and Guattari explore Artaud's body without organs, the body experienced that still remains mysterious for thought ? Artaud hoped that he would be loved not for his work, but for his life, testifying to a great health against a sick world: the prospect of the impossibility of thinking is then thought wounded and profound, taking on a life of its own in all its opacity.

Without intending to write a comparative paper that takes into account many psychoanalytic ways of approaching a same topic, I aim to identify aspects of Winnicott s theories, which referring to this theme, can characterize the most important differences between this author and the traditional psychoanalysis concepts. While the traditional psychoanalysis, due to the centerpiece of Oedipus and to the magnitude of the sexuality theory, the father s role was limited mostly overall to the role of an interventionist and a representative of the law, as for Winnicott, the presence of the father in involved implicated since the beginning of life, when questions concerning Oedipus Complex have no meaning whatsoever, and continues changing as the child matures. This paper confirms the thesis that the thoughts reasonings viewpoints thinkings of this author represents a new theoretical and practical foundation from which the human questions, in this case, the presence and role of the father, in the process of maturation, can be understood / Este estudo tem por objetivo explicitar a concepção de Winnicott acerca do que é requerido do pai, em termos de presença e dos diversos papéis que lhe estão reservados na criação de um filho, ao longo do processo de amadurecimento pessoal, do nascimento até o estágio do complexo de Édipo, tendo em vista um desenvolvimento saudável.

女性主義與心理分析-Chorodow論母職再製 / Feminism and Psychoanalysis-The Reproduction of Mothering From Chodorow's Perspective

Yuang, Lang Yi Unknown Date (has links)

To Keep on Knowing More(?): Seminar XVILL, The Other Side of Psychoanalysis

Lowther, John 16 July 2009 (has links)
This is an explication of Lacan’s Seminar XVII. The introduction situates the Seminar in its time and in relation to other theories of discourse. In part one I examine the changes which it brings to a variety of ideas already known in Lacan’s oeuvre such as Jouissance, Master Signifier(s) and Oedipus. Part two looks the four discourses in detail after considering the positions common to each. I provide accounts of each discourse as taking place internally to a subject and between subjects. The coda examines areas where further research is possible, reviews and critiques some scholarship on this seminar and inquires into the use value of the discourse theory, both generally and as a means of getting beyond Lacan.

Interpreting The Denizens of The Hundred Acre Wood : Freudian & Lacanian psychoanalytical concepts in Winnie-The-Pooh / Psykoanalytiska koncept i Nalle Puh : En tolkning av Sjumilaskogens invånare

Pettersson, Timothy January 2009 (has links)
In this paper I have strived to provide a new view on a timeless classic of children’s literature, Winnie-The-Pooh. In psychoanalytic literary criticism concepts and theories of psychoanalysis is implemented while interpreting literature; in this paper, I have interpreted the novel incorporating concepts of the psychoanalytic schools of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan while arguing that the denizens of the Hundred Acre Wood are manifestations of parts of the narrator’s unconscious. The first two sections of the paper present the theories and concepts of the two major schools of psychoanalysis as an introduction aimed at increasing the readability of the interpretation. The individual interpretations of each character are then presented separately, every section in some way involving psychoanalytic theory. Kanga, Roo, Piglet, Winnie-the-Pooh, Christopher Robin, Rabbit, Owl and Eeyore are shown to be repressed memories, feelings or thoughts. Included theoretical concepts are the Oedipus complex, the sexual development of infants, the journey of children towards consciousness, Lacanian desire and lack, Freudian dream interpretation and the conception that the unconscious is structured as language, among others.

Étude du fonctionnement psychique de femmes en protocole FIV suite à l'hypofertilité du conjoint : une recherche clinique en contexte culturel égyptien / A study of the psychological functioning of women in an IVF protocol following spouse's subfertility : a clinical research in the Egyptian cultural context

Labib-Sami, Shams 22 September 2015 (has links)
This study aims at exploring the impact of male subfertility and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) on the psychological functioning of a group of female spouses, in the first Egyptian IVF center in Egypt (1986), within the Egyptian cultural context. Approximately 60% of couples consulting at the Egyptian Center for IVF carry the diagnosis of male factor infertility. We are interested in understanding what constitutes the specificity of the psychological functioning of these women within this cultural context, where male infertility is a taboo pathology provoking family shame, and where only homologous IVF -using a married couple's gametes- is allowed by the law. The first hypothesis states that there is a specific female suffering related to the maintenance of the secret of male subfertility. The second hypothesis assumes that for the wife, the diagnosis disclosure and medical treatments are followed by an oedipal idealization of the her parents. Our sample is composed of ten women aged between 20 and 40 years old, and undergoing an IVF protocol. On the methodological aspect, we have used semi-structured interviews and the 13-Item Beck Depression Inventory. Results indicate the existence of a complain discourse among the wives, addressed towards their husbands, and at the same time an idealization of their own parents. Variable depression symptoms have been observed in our sample. Finally, the way women integrate psychologically the IVF experience is a relevant indicator of their psychological balance. As a conclusion, this study aims at being a research-action, which objective is to elaborate a clinical intervention at the service of women and couples, and suitable to this particular cultural context.
