Den fantastiska peritexten : en undersökning av paratextens användbarhet vid fastställandet av målgruppstillhörighet inom fantasylitteraturen / The fantastic peritext : a study of the usability of a book’s peritext when deciding its possible affiliation to a certain age-group in fantasy literature

Larsson, Sofi January 2021 (has links)
This essay aims to investigate the extent to which a book’s peritext can be used to determine which age-group a book is best suited for. This in the hopes of finding a useful complement to the bibliographic information that is usually used for information retrieval, a complement that can simplify the process by adding more subject signifiers to an information retrieval system’s repertoire. The material being used is a selection of books that were published or republished between the years 2014-2020 and catalogued by the National Bibliography as belonging to the fantasy fiction genre.  The study is grounded in Gérard Genette’s concept of peritext, defined as the information surrounding a written text with the purpose of introducing the text before the actual reading commences. A number of these peritextual elements are studied to see how frequently they appear in the present study’s selection of books, after which the books’ cover designs and titles are studied in more detail. The results of this study show that there are differences in how the peritext of children’s and adults’ books are formatted, especially when it comes to how the front covers are designed. It is not, however, possible to draw any definite conclusions regarding how the peritext might be used to facilitate the process of information retrieval. To achieve this there is need for further research on the subject.

The work focuses primarily on the following questions: What is happening with the text from the moment of the manuscript submission to the publisher until the moment when is held in reader's hands for the first time? What subjects, institutions or interests are entering (or may enter) the game during the production, distribution and sale of the book and what is their particular role? What is the form and function of graphical and peritextual components of the book? All questions are answered in regard to the current state of Czech literary culture.

Bokomslagets betydelse : En paratextanalys av fem populära böcker valda avelever i årskurs 5 / The meaning of a book cover : A paratext analysis of five popular books chosen by pupils in grade 5

Bengtsson, Sara January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the study is to apply a paratext analysis to investigate what it is in thepackaging of books that can appear attractive to children and what are the distinctiveshared features of popular pupil choices among books. The analysis consists of anexamination of each book and then a comparative section. The analytical categories arethe title and subtitle, author’s name, publisher’s information, cover pictures, the backcover, the spine, the format of the book, endpapers, and the series emblem. Thetheoretical premises are hermeneutics and semiotic interpretations of signs. The studyproceeds from Genette’s concepts of paratext, peritext and epitext. A prominent common feature of the books was series emblems in the form ofmain titles and colours. Another significant conclusion is that the cover often depictssome climactic event in the content of the book. The content and the cover mustharmonize so that the reader will not feel disappointed. The didactic conclusions are thatteachers must have a good understanding of the effect a book cover can have on pupils.Often teachers try to motivate pupils by telling them about the exciting content, but ifthe pupil is not motivated by the paratext, the threshold will be too high. It is of greatrelevance that teachers offer pupils several different books with varying paratexts.

La variabilité dans quatre versions de l’épopée mandingue / Variability in four versions of the Mandinka epic

Kouyaté, Mamadou 20 February 2015 (has links)
This thesis is to variability in rewriting four versions of the Mandingo epic. By referring to comparison differential initiated by Ute Heidmann (2005) who defend an approach to no-hierachizing texts, this thesis proposes to put an evidence variability indices in the diversity of their textual forms. These are generated by different enunciative sources including the figure of the griot representing different characters, the description of some historical facts and nature, featuring as it sees fit cut and thrust. Finally, the variability indices refer to the different editions of the same text of the Mandinka heritage literature. Based on the corpus, this study explores the variables that represent editorial movement places inducing shifts in meaning sometimes due the rivalry between the griots, authors of the performance.

Iscensättning av sjukdom : En performativ och bildsemiotisk studie av svenska konvalescentmotiv 1884–1933 / The Staging of Sickness : A Performative and Visual Semiotic Study of Swedish Convalescence  Motifs from 1884–1933

Cserhalmi, Nora January 2021 (has links)
This thesis concerns six Swedish paintings depicting sick or convalescent individuals; Richard Bergh’s Konvalescent (unfinished, 1886), Flickan och Döden (1888), Eva Bonnier’s Magdalena (1887), Gustaf Magnusson’s Konvalescent (1933), Jenny Nyström’s Konvalescenten (1884), and Georg Pauli’s Vid sjukbädden (1885). The purpose of this study is to examine how sickness is portrayed and staged using performative theory and visual semiotics. The thesis takes into account that tuberculosis, being a widespread disease during the 18th and 19th Century, made it a topic of exploration in the contemporary art. With this as the framework the thesis examines whether or not it is possible to diagnose the depicted individuals. The results shows that sickness first and foremost is portrayed and staged in signs regarding the body: the face, the hands, and how the body is posed. Lastly, it is suggested that these artworks can be seen as cultural symbols of TB, since not being viable for a strictly medicinal diagnosis they are more the result of the contemporary need to examine TB and its effects on society and culture. The paintings becomes – such as a body is a vessel for a disease – vessels for the disease culturally speaking.
