The development and experience of the secondary emotion of pride in six- and seven-year-old children in a social contextHuff, Brian K. 01 January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This study is a phenomenological investigation of children's emotional development and experience focusing on the secondary emotion of pride. The purposes of this study were: (1) to examine the phenomenon of the development of pride in six- and seven-year-old children's socioemotional interactions, (2) to understand how and when young children experience, live, and display emotion, and (3) to develop insight about a child's perspective of their experience of emotion by entering into their field of perception. Respondents included six children, the two parents of each child, and the children's teachers. Theory-based sampling was used. The data were collected through the use of interviews with children, their parents and their teachers. The respondents described their emotion experiences, their interactions with others, and elaborated on their stories. What emerged from the data was consistent with existing literature in that at around the age of six, the components which allow for the construct of pride: perception, cognitive abilities, verbal skills, and socioemotional capacities, are present but not necessarily connected. By seven years of age, the component pieces are generally beginning to coalesce into a describable phenomenon. Second, pride was communicated between children and others often deliberately and purposefully, as well as indirectly and unconsciously. Third, the extracted meaning revealed that the essence of the phenomenon of pride was a positive, desirable feeling, the experience of pride for children and adults was about having a relationship with another person and pride can be related to either one's own accomplishments, another person's accomplishments, or an individual's qualities. Additionally, when pride is overemphasized it can be experienced as a negative feeling, and pride appeared to be interconnected with one's sense of humility. Recommendations are provided for parents, educators, and therapists. Studies which may investigate more fully the various aspects of socioemotional development are offered.

This study aims to assess the Swedish national value framework (Svenska statliga värdegrunden) in light of liberal multicultural theory, with a particular focus on the perceived conflict between theoretical principles and actual political practices, exemplified by Swedish authorities' participation in Stockholm Pride. To achieve this, an ideological analysis applies three contemporary liberal multicultural theories to evaluate the alignment of the Swedish national value framework with these theories. The subsequent examination of Swedish authorities' involvement in Stockholm Pride seeks to determine whether such participation is endorsed or discouraged by the identified theoretical framework. The analysis supports a fundamental premise of this study – that state authorities' active support for LGBTQ+ rights and participation in Stockholm Pride is not only acceptable but also encouraged by liberal multicultural theory. Importantly, this endorsement does not compromise the principles of state neutrality integral to liberal ideals.

[en] The study aims to investigate the opinions and interpretations of readers s comments about the Parada do Orgulho LGBT (LGBT Pride Parade), considering that the event proposes an agenda for sexual minorities demands. The data were collected on the Internet and focused on São Paulo LGBT Pride Parade in 2011, in personal blogs and news websites. From a Discourse Analysis perspective, the study identified patterns, regarding the most recurring discursive strategies adopted in these statements. Three analytic categories have been found, regarding the pertinence of the event, civil rights for sexual minorities and the moral evaluation - both ideological and religious - about non-heteronormative sexualities.

Stolthet och skvaller : En komparativ analys mellan Jane Austens Stolthet och fördom och Curtis Sittenfelds Sanning och skvaller / Pride and gossip : A comparative analysis of Jane Austen's Stolthet och fördom and Curtis Sittenfeld's Sanning och skvallerLarsson, Johanna January 2019 (has links)
This essay analyses Curtis Sittenfeld’s novel Sanning och Skvaller as an adaption of Jane Austen’s Stolthet och fördom. The purpose of this essay is to take a closer look at how the characters and the plot changes in Sittenfeld’s version compared to the original. The character analysis mainly focuses on Mr. Wickham, lady Catherine de Bourgh and Caroline Bingley as characters, as well as Mary Bennet and how her sexuality is portrayed. Elizabeth Bennet’s relationship with Mr. Darcy and the importance of a proposal and a marriage is also something that this essay analyses. The reception of the novel is something that will be addressed by highlighting some of the negative, and positive, reviews that the novel received upon publication. The discussion at the end brings up whether or not Sittenfelds novel can be classified as an adaption after changing so much of the story, how the elements in the new version changes its believability and how the problematic aspects may ruin the story.

A comparative analysis between Elizabeth Bennet and Bridget Jones in a gender perspectiveJohansson, Elin January 2016 (has links)
This thesis analyses protagonist Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austen’s book Pride and Prejudice (1813) and protagonist Bridget Jones in Helen Fielding’s book Bridget Jones' Diary (1996) from a gender theory perspective. I use a comparative method to analyse how two themes are portrayed in the books: family and marriage and education and career. The study shows that Elizabeth, from a gender perspective, is controlled by the society and her family's expectations that she must marry a man of the right table. Bridget, on the other hand, lives in accordance to the patriarchal norm, but this seems rather appear on a more personal level. Regarding education and career it seems to have gone from seeing this as an important part of being a woman not just for herself personally but also for being more attractive for men, to an objective perspective where education seems to define your work ability instead of the woman herself. The study, in a didactic point of view, can be useful for teachers to help their pupils to see how gender is constructed and deconstructed from time to time. The syllabus of the subject of Swedish gives opportunities for the pupils to discuss and maybe first and foremost problematize gender and equality in both a literary historical perspective and a personal way.

Poverty alleviation through community development : the case of PRO PRIDE-EthiopiaAtfaye, Haile 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Misunderstanding of poverty and lack of sound poverty alleviating strategy, among
others, are problems of some of the few NGOs existing in Ethiopia. There is a
problem of understanding their roles in relation to the State and other stakeholders.
The principles they apply in their intervention are other problems. These are the issues
that were researched in the PRO PRIDE case study.
The legitimacy of PRO PRIDE as a poverty-alleviating programme in view of global
and Ethiopian poverty and the consequent policy focuses is justified.
The principles of PRO PRIDE - community participation, gender equity, intersectoral
collaboration, appropriate technology, focus on prevention, participatory
management, cost effectiveness and sustainability of programmes - are sound
principles. Reviewing the practices of PRO PRIDE as guided by the aforementioned
principles it is understood that the community development principles - human
orientation, public participation, empowerment, ownership, release, social learning,
adaptiveness and simplicity - are commendably achieved.
PRO PRIDE well dealt with understanding poverty and its interwoven nature. Issues
such as the deprivation trap that the poor are entangled in; the general explanation of
poverty that are given by different authors; vicious cycles of poverty and social,
economic and political causes of poverty which are operating at local, national and
international levels; and the rural-urban dynamics that work in exacerbating the urban
poverty are covered in its socio-economic study. The study of the programme areas
shows that they depict a dismal picture as a result of the operation of these poverty
dynamics.
Regarding the integrated rural-urban poverty alleviation strategy, the State has made
favourable policies and itself dwelled on rural poverty due to lack of financial
capacity to cover both rural and urban areas. The State's rural focus is accepted to
impact on the urban poverty through changing the migration pattern. PRO PRIDE is
operating in the urban setting to connect the nexus - the rural-urban strategy. PRO
PRIDE is operating with an integrated urban development strategy encompassing
income generation, basic education, primary health care, HIV IAIDS prevention and
control and environmental sanitation. Through integrating these areas of intervention
PRO PRIDE is improving the quality of life, promoting sustainable urban economic growth, creating income and employment generating opportunities, giving people
access to resources and opportunities, improving the distribution of income and
welfare, and applying sound developmental principles.
The functioning of PRO PRIDE is proven to be in a well compliance with the
requirement for organisations alike. It is functioning in collaboration and participation
with the popular sector - the people themselves and their community leaders. It
operates with the agreement of the State bodies such as FRDCB and with other line
bureaus such as Health, Education, Environmental Development, and Labour and
Social Affairs. It collaborates with donors the major being ActionAid - Ethiopia
(AAE). Internal components of PRO PRIDE such as the Board and the staff as well as
its organisational development influence its operation. All the programmes and the
projects are managed through PRO PRIDE's interaction with its internal and external
stakeho lders.
PRO PRIDE as an agent of development has played as a catalyst to initiate
development, focused on empowerment and using the people's latent potential,
materialised capacity building and facilitation. These are basically the requirements
that the current NGOs should fulfill, which PRO PRIDE commendably did.
The study has indicated that although PRO PRIDE is an organisation of overall
success, there are some areas of future focus both by the State and PRO PRIDE.
Recommendations are made as to what both parties should do in their future focuses.
in Ethiopië.
beoefen, is problematies.
menslike oriëntasie, openbare deelname, bemagtiging, eienaarskap, bevryding, sosiale
stedelike ontwikkelingstrategie behelsende inkomstegenerering, basiese opvoeding,
ActionAid-Ethiopië (AAE) is.

This thesis establishes a model to understand the relationships between a particular group of emotions and the individual's conception of himself. In agreement with several contemporary authors, it is argued here that the conception we have of ourselves is in the form of a narrative identity, namely a story within which we try to structure a coherent picture of ourselves. In this perspective, it is proposed that a group of emotions, including shame, pride and guilt, occupies a crucial place in the formation and maintenance of this self-image. These emotions, that we can describe as self-assessing, would influence self assessment and thus participate in the development of self-image. Moreover, narrative identity, through a normative and motivational aspect, will in turn influences the manifestation and interpretation of those same emotions. So the relationship between emotions and self-assessing narrative identity is a complex relationship of mutual influence. The analysis proposed here might help clarify many mental processes of the individual and especially its moral motivation.
