Moments of Absorption

Moments of Absorption explores the conceptual and visual themes that are presented in my MFA thesis exhibition. The research looks into the absorption of the nude subject, the gestures that communicate this absorption, and the domestic space as a stage for the presentation of these gestures. This work investigates a tension between the theatrical and the natural as represented by images.

A study of tonality in selected works of Aaron Copland

The analytical literature posits a dichotomy between Copland’s “popular” and “serious” music. Despite different motivic and hannonic structures on the surface, however, these styles are consistent in their underlying use of tonality. Tonics in both styles are defined by the same set of tonicizing techniques; and tonics in both styles serve the same function — to define the changing scale-degree function of pcs that are emphasized in various ways as common to the collections of successive tonics. The most important of these changes in scale-degree function are summarized in pitch-class continuity graphs that show the relation of the changes to thematic and harmonic form. Detailed analyses, which cover two “popular” and two “serious” works by Copland, demonstrate the consistency between the two styles. Besides demonstrating an underlying stylistic consistency these graphs provide useful information about structure in Copland’s music because they confirm striking features of Copland’s thematic and tonal designs.

Le processus de sécularisation : l'implication des élites catholiques laïques

À partir des études récentes démontrant l’importance des élites catholiques dans la foulée des changements et de la modernisation de la société québécoise entre les années 1930 et 1970, nous tentons de mieux comprendre ces élites, leurs motifs et leur destin. Issues des jeunes générations de laïcs contestataires des années 1930 et 1940, nous montrons d’abord que les élites catholiques laïques ont été influencées par des courants philosophiques de renouveau chrétien et par leur formation dans l’Action catholique spécialisée. En contestant le cléricalisme et le conservatisme présents au Québec entre 1930 et 1960, elles ont développé une pensée réformiste se situant dans l’esprit du concile Vatican II et de la Révolution tranquille. Un trait caractérise ces élites: même en étant critiques envers l’Église catholique, elles sont tout de même demeurées loyales envers le catholicisme. Nous proposons de nous réapproprier la sociologie de Max Weber afin de mieux comprendre l’implication des élites catholiques laïques à la modernisation de la société québécoise et, par là, de saisir le type particulier de sécularisation qu’a connu le Québec des années 1950 à 1970. Pour ce faire, nous retenons les parcours de vie et le discours de trois représentants de ces élites: Guy Rocher, Jacques Grand’Maison et Claude Ryan. À partir de ces acteurs, nous délinéons trois « voies » distinctes empruntées par les élites catholiques laïques pour s’engager dans la société. Ces trois « voies » relatent certes des types d’engagement différents, mais elles renvoient aussi à un ancrage catholique commun. En considérant le point de vue de ces élites face aux transformations du paysage religieux au Québec, nous examinons enfin l’utilisation du concept de sécularisation par rapport à la laïcisation et la déconfessionnalisation ainsi que les enjeux actuels liés à la religion. / Based on recent studies acknowledging the importance of Catholic elites in the changes leading to the modernization of Quebec society between 1930 and 1970, this master thesis try to provide a better understanding of these elites, their motives and their destiny. Stemming from the young generations of lay protesters of the 1930’s and 1940’s, the lay Catholic elites were influenced by philosophical tendencies within the Christian renewal and their formation in the “Action catholique”. Questioning the clericalism and the social and political conservatism prevalent in Quebec between 1930 and 1960, they put forward a reformist thought tuned with the “spirit” of the Vatican II council and of the Quiet Revolution. One characteristic of these elite: even if they were critical of the Catholic Church, they retained a loyalty towards the Catholicism. I propose to “reappropriate” the sociology of Max Weber in order to better understand the involvement of lay Catholic elites to the modernization of Quebec society and, thus, grasp the particular kind of secularization that take place between 1950 and 1970 in Quebec. In order to do so, I study the life trajectories and discourses of three actors from these elites: Guy Rocher, Jacques Grand’Maison and Claude Ryan. With these actors in mind, I describe three distinct “ways” taken by the lay Catholic elites to get involved in their society. Those three “ways” certainly relate three different types of involvement, but they also refer to a common Catholic feeling of belonging. Considering the point of view of these elites together with the transformations of Quebec’s religious landscape, I can question the use of the concepts of secularization, laicization, and deconfessionalization and, thus, describe the way religious issues are dealt with.

Douglas Pike (1908-1974) : South Australian and Australian historian.

Douglas Henry Pike was born in China in 1908, the second of five children, whose Australian parents were missionaries with a Protestant interdenominational faith mission, the China Inland Mission. Following graduation from an English style mission boarding school at Chefoo in northern China, Pike came to Melbourne in 1924; and from 1926 spent twelve years jackerooing on various New South Wales country properties. He returned to Melbourne in 1938, trained for the ministry in a Churches of Christ College, graduated in November 1941, married Olive Hagger and was sent to Adelaide. During pastorates at Colonel Light Gardens and Glenelg he studied at the University of Adelaide for his BA. He achieved History Honours, resigned from the ministry, taught briefly in Adelaide and at the University of Western Australia then returned to Adelaide as Reader from 1950 to 1960. Pike obtained his MA, then the D. Litt. for Paradise of Dissent, a history of South Australia. During the 1950s he wrote a series of newspaper articles, ‘Early Adelaide with the lid off’. Douglas Pike (1908-1974) South Australian and Australian Historian. In 1960 he was appointed to the Chair of History at the University of Tasmania and published his second book, Australia: The Quiet Continent. In 1964 he moved to the Australian National University and commenced his pioneering task as founding editor of the Australian Dictionary of Biography. Therefore the most significant period of his working life in history and historiography covers the years from 1948 until his sudden illness in November 1973, and death in May 1974. The Second World War at first slowed but then stimulated the teaching and writing of history in Australia. Pike commenced his university studies during the war; his research and writing followed in the post-war period. His years in academia witnessed the establishment between 1946 and 1958 of four more universities in Australia, including the ANU, where he spent the last ten years of his life. However, apart from book reviews, obituaries in newspapers and journals, biographical paragraphs and the ADB, Pike’s contribution and significance to Australian historiography has been largely neglected. My thesis is based on personal interviews and correspondence with people who knew Douglas Pike, including family members, together with archival material from the Australian National Library and the universities where Pike worked. This master's thesis deals with a symbolism of tortoise in fine art. The text is limited to the European art only, to keep the range of the thesis sustainable. The thesis is devided into three parts. The first chapter focuses on literature, as a source of meanings for fine art. There are in detail described beginnings of literature about turtles and development of the dominant lines of their symbolism until 17th century. It is about "Tortoise-Lady", "Tortoise-Beast & Heretic" and "Slow Tortoise". Within the second part there are briefly mentioned the shades of turtle meanings that were not specified in the previous chapter due to the time period limitation. The third section includes a case study of the painting "Bathers with a Turtle" by Henry Matisse. It contains also occurrence of "Tortoise-Lady" within the history of art.

A critical analysis of President Thabo Mbeki's approach to resolving the 2008 disputed election results in Zimbabwe

Evaluating the effectiveness of Thabo Mbeki’s political mediation in the Zimbabwean conflict of 2008, following a disputed election outcome, is the principal objective of this study. The Ripeness Theory of mediation and conflict resolution that was proposed by William Zartman and developed by other scholars is deployed as the theoretical framework of the study. The principal measure of the effectiveness of mediation lies in its success in resolving conflict in a sustainable manner. There is consensus in conflict resolution scholarship that the post-cold war era has witnessed a marked shift of conflicts from the inter-state scene to the intra-state domain, such as the one in Zimbabwe, 2008. This shift has brought with it increasing attention to issues of human security, human rights and democratisation in mediation and conflict resolution. As a result, a compelling need for the effective resolution of such conflicts, and guarantee of the enforcement of human rights, security and promotion of democratisation as part of mediation, has arisen. There is also a general acceptance, amongst scholars, that the success of mediation goes beyond the signing of mediated agreements as often case conflict has re-ignited after the signing of peace agreements. For that reason, the argument that mediation is counter-productive as it often puts a lid on the can of conflict without resolving the underlying conflict issues has achieved currency. There is therefore a general convergence of views in mediation literature that addressing the structural causes of disputes guarantees the sustainable resolution of conflict. It is in the context of these developments and views in international relations and politics that this study evaluates, using the Ripeness Theory, its limits noted, the effectiveness of Thabo Mbeki’s mediation in Zimbabwe, and the argument is advanced that often case mediated agreements are not effective mechanisms for the sustainable resolution of conflict and the achievement of democratisation and durable peace. Föreliggande systematiska litteraturstudie presenterar tidigare forskning om litteratursamtal och introverta elever. Syftet är att undersöka hur lärare kan genomföra litteratursamtal med introverta elever. Studien inkluderar 14 publikationer där doktorsavhandlingar, vetenskapliga artiklar och facklitteratur ingår. Mycket av forskningen utgår från det sociokulturella perspektivet. Materialet har bearbetats genom en innehållsanalys och kategoriserats efter tre teman; introverta elever, litteratursamtal samt strukturerade samtal med tystlåtna elever.  Studiens resultat visar att introverta elever ofta har en tystlåten framtoning. De har behov av en trygg lärmiljö med möjlighet till återhämtning. Introverta elever föredrar enskilt eller omsorgsfullt strukturerat arbete i mindre grupper. I och med införandet av läroplanen lgr 22 kommer strukturerade samtal, såsom litteratursamtal ges ett större utrymme i svenskundervisningen. Forskning visar att elever förhåller sig positiva till litteratursamtal. Det finns dock didaktiska fallgropar med litteratursamtal då de ibland används mer som förhör än som ett dialogiskt textsamtal. Forskningsresultat beträffande elevers lärande i samband med samtal går isär. Viss forskning menar att mindre verbalt aktiva elever löper en risk att klara sig sämre i skolan, medan annan forskning visar att muntligt deltagande inte nödvändigtvis måste vara en förutsättning för lärande.

Problematiken med begreppet beprövad erfarenhet är att det inte finns några konkreta riktlinjer eller förklaringar kring hur arbetet ska ske utifrån beprövad erfarenhet. Syftet med studien är att skapa förståelse för hur förskollärare uppfattar arbetet med beprövad erfarenhet i förskolans verksamhet. För att få svar på frågeställningarna i syftet har en kvalitativ studie gjorts med utgångspunkt i det fenomenografiska perspektivet. Metoden som använts i studien är en kvalitativ webbenkät, som 18 förskollärare valde att delta i. I resultatet framkom det flera olika uppfattningar kring hur arbetet med beprövad erfarenhet sker i förskolans verksamhet. Det framkom att det finns likheter och skillnader i hur förskollärarna uppfattar arbetet med beprövad erfarenhet. Utifrån fenomenografi finns det inga rätt eller fel i hur enskilda individer uppfattar ett fenomen och studiens syfte är inte att finna svar på så vida något är rätt eller fel. Utan som tidigare nämns görs studien i syfte för att få en förståelse för hur förskollärare uppfattar arbetet med beprövad erfarenhet. I resultatet framkom det uppfattningar om vilken betydelse beprövad erfarenhet har, vilka hjälpmedel som används samt vilka utvecklingsmöjligheter som finns i relation till beprövad erfarenhet. Studien kan inte dra några generella slutsatser men resultatet visar att det finns en stor variation på arbetssätt i relation till beprövad erfarenhet. Slutligen diskuteras resultatet i förhållande till tidigare forskning, litteratur samt i relation till fenomenografi. / The problem with the concept of proven experience is that there are no concrete guidelines or explanations about how the work should be done based on proven experience. The purpose of the study is to create an understanding of how preschool teachers perceive the work with proven experience in the preschool's activities. In order to get answers to the questions for the studies purpose, a qualitative study has been made based on the phenomenographic perspective. The method used in the study is a qualitative online survey, which 18 preschool teachers chose to participate in. The result revealed several different perceptions about how the work with proven experience takes place in the preschool's activities. It emerged that there are similarities and differences in how preschool teachers perceive the work with proven experience. Based on phenomenography, there is no right or wrong in how individuals perceive a phenomenon and the purpose of the study isn´t to find answers to the extent that something is right or wrong. But as previously mentioned, the study is made in order to gain an understanding of how preschool teachers perceive the work with proven experience. The results revealed perceptions of the significance of proven experience, what tools are used and what development opportunities there is in relation to proven experience. The study can´t draw any general conclusions, but the results show that there is a great variety of working methods in relation to proven experience. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to previous research, literature and in relation to phenomenography.

"They're Coming!" Invasion and Manichaeism in Post-World-War-Two Literature in the United States and Quebec by Oliver Lange, Orson Scott Card, Mary Jane Engh, Paul Chamberland, Hubert Aquin and Claude Jasmin

Abstract : This thesis develops an ideological critique of selected works by Oliver Lange, Orson Scott Card, Mary Jane Engh, Paul Chamberland, Hubert Aquin, and Claude Jasmin in order to uncover how they use the politico-literary discourse of the paranoid style and its Manichean binary of Us versus Them within the contexts of the United States during the Cold War (and its on-going repercussions into the early 1970’s) and Québec during the Révolution tranquille (Quiet Revolution). The consequent ideologemes manifest narratives describing the fight of an oppressed group (Us) against a demonized hegemonic enemy (Them.) This comparative literature project includes political and historical analyses in order to situate the works in the socio-historical contexts of their production, and since the ideologies of a period may be imbedded (knowingly or not) by an author in a text. The United States and Québec were extremely different culturally, as well as politically, during the decades in question and the issues their populations had to face were often quite dissimilar. Yet it is precisely the interrogation of their dissimilarities that is central to my project of demonstrating, through the selected texts, how two different societies narrativise key predominant ideological anxieties and struggles using the same rhetoric and similar tropes of the paranoid syle and its Manichean ideologemes. / Résumé : Ce mémoire réalise une critique idéologique de textes littéraires produits par différents auteurs : Oliver Lange, Orson Scott Card, Mary Jane Engh, Paul Chamberland, Hubert Aquin et Claude Jasmin. Cette critique a pour but d'étudier comment ces textes utilisent le discours politico-littéraire du paranoid style (style paranoïaque) et le manichéanisme ( Us versus Them ou Eux ou Nous) qui lui est associé à l'intérieur du contexte sociohistorique des États-Unis au plus fort de la Guerre froide (et durant sa période plus chaude des années 1970) et du Québec au plus fort de la Révolution tranquille. Les idéologèmes qui en résultent façonnent des histoires décrivant le combat d'un groupe opprimé (Nous) contre un ennemi hégémonique et démonisé (Eux) Ce projet de littérature comparée fait appel à des analyses politiques et historiques pour situer les textes analysés dans leur contexte sociohistorique de production respectifs puisque les idéologies d'une époque peuvent être insérées (consciemment ou non) par un auteur dans un texte. Le Québec et les États-Unis étaient des sociétés extrêmement différentes culturellement et politiquement durant ces décennies et les problèmes auxquels elles devaient faire face étaient différents également. C'est l'exploration de ces différences qui est centrale à ma démonstration, à travers les textes sélectionnés, du processus par lequel deux sociétés différentes opposées à deux ennemis différents mettent en scène leurs principaux combats et anxiétés idéologiques en utilisant la même rhétorique et les même conventions reliées au style paranoïaque et à son Manichéanisme.
