Raman and SEM analysis of a biocolonised hot spring travertine terrace in Svalbard, Norway

Jorge Villar, Susana E., Benning, L.G., Edwards, Howell G.M., AMASE team January 2007 (has links)
A profile across 8 layers from a fossil travertine terrace from a low temperature geothermal spring located in Svalbard, Norway has been studied using both Raman spectroscopy and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) techniques to identify minerals and organic life signals. Calcite, anatase, quartz, haematite, magnetite and graphite as well as scytonemin, three different carotenoids, chlorophyll and a chlorophyll-like compound were identified as geo- and biosignatures respectively, using 785 and/or 514 nm Raman laser excitation wavelengths. No morphological biosignatures representing remnant microbial signals were detected by high-resolution imaging, although spectral analyses indicated the presence of organics. In contrast, in all layers, Raman spectra identified a series of different organic pigments indicating little to no degradation or change of the organic signatures and thus indicating the preservation of fossil biomarker compounds throughout the life time of the springs despite the lack of remnant morphological indicators. With a view towards planetary exploration we discuss the implications of the differences in Raman band intensities observed when spectra were collected with the different laser excitations. We show that these differences, as well as the different detection capability of the 785 and 514 nm laser, could lead to ambiguous compound identification. We show that the identification of bio and geosignatures, as well as fossil organic pigments, using Raman spectroscopy is possible. These results are relevant since both lasers have been considered for miniaturized Raman spectrometers for planetary exploration.

Gabalda, Sunsearé 09 October 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Valls Salada, Judit, 1981- 27 April 2010 (has links)
The aim of this research is to analyse Ramon Martí d'Eixalà's civil and commercial law works. Ramón Martí de Eixalá lived in the 19th century, at a time when a series of deep economic and social changes had begun. His work in commercial law, "Instituciones de derecho mercantil de España", was much more recognized that the "Tratado elementar del derecho civil romano y español". Therefore, his work was recommended as the textbook for Studies in jurisprudence for several years. In contrast, his civil law work never formed part of the textbook list recommended by the Government. Additionally, the British philosophy has become an important part of this research because Ramon Martí d'Eixalà knew about British thought and introduced the Common Sense philosophy in Catalonia.

Territorial dynamics in land use and the hydrological regime: Central Region, Costa Rica / Dinámica territorial en el uso de la tierra y el régimen hidrológico: región central, Costa Rica

Quesada, Marvin E. 10 April 2018 (has links)
It analyzes the relationship between territorial dynamics in land use and changes in the hydrological regime in the Central region of Costa Rica. A comparison is made between two years and the results showed that this process has been intense from one year to another. The urban and industrial heavy pressure on the most fertile soils of the country, has led to changes inthe hydrological regime of the two major sub-basins: Virilla and Grande de San Ramón, both of which constitute the Basin of Grande de Tarcoles River. The sub-basin of the Virilla Rivercan not store rainfall, especially considering that a large percentage of its area is covered byland uses of urban type. In contrast, the sub-basin of the Grande de San Ramón River retains a higher percentage of water, having land uses dominated by pasture, crops, and forests. In synthesis, several land uses increase their area, especially urban areas, with the major exception of the forest area which was reduced considerably.

Vertiz Nunez, Marietta 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on Leonardo Padura’s historical revisionism in his 2009 novel El hombre que amaba a los perros. Padura, one of today’s most published and award-winning authors in the Hispanic world, has used the historical figures of Leon Trotsky and his assassin, Ramón Mercader, to present the untold story of Cuba from the time Fidel Castro gained power in January 1959. Padura uses Trotsky’s character to address a number of issues that point to the decomposition of the Cuban revolutionary system. On the one hand, Trotsky was a writer who suffered censorship, as did many Cuban writers and intellectuals. On the other hand, he was a soldier who, after being involved in various conflicts, such as the October Revolution, was erased from the history of his country, forced into exile, and ultimately assassinated. In this dissertation, we will examine how the reconstruction and deconstruction of history converge, focusing on the centrifugal and centripetal movements they comprise. We will see how the history of Cuba during the 1970s and 1980s is reconstructed in Padura’s literary work through a nonhistorical figure and his experiences, revealing the Stalinization of the Castro regime and the disenchantment of those who initially supported it, including many intellectuals and writers.

Laberinto / Laberinto

Skopalová, Eva January 2016 (has links)
Laberinto is a type of book-form game, invented by Andrea Ghisi, and first printed in 1607. A second version was printed in 1616 and includes all the characters of the so-called tarocchi of Mantegna, with the addition of a new series of ten cards (following the logic of composition of the tarocchi). Another two versions of Laberinto (printed in 1607 and 1610) contain none of the Mantegna tarocchi characters. The rules of the game are based on the art of mathematical combinations. The aim of the game is to move through a visual labyrinth and discover which figure the opponent has in mind. The focus of this work will be on the 1616 version; my intention is to describe the problematic of the repetition of the original game concept a century and a half later, examining the conditions under which players used the allegorical field of the so-called Mantegna Tarocchi, and under which the cosmological meaning was secularized and the new series of ten cards added.

Rhetoric or reality : US counterinsurgency policy reconsidered

Todd, Maurice L. January 2015 (has links)
This study explores the foundations of US counterinsurgency policy and doctrine in order to better understand the main historical influences on that policy and doctrine and how those influences have informed the current US approach to counterinsurgency. The results of this study indicate the US experience in counterinsurgency during the Greek Civil War and the Huk Rebellion in the Philippines had a significant influence on the development of US counterinsurgency policy and doctrine following World War II through the Kennedy presidency. In addition, despite a major diversion from the lessons of Greece and the Philippines during the Vietnam War, the lessons were re-institutionalized in US counterinsurgency policy and doctrine following the war and continue to have significant influence today, though in a highly sanitized and, therefore, misleading form. As a result, a major disconnect has developed between the “rhetoric and reality” of US counterinsurgency policy. This disconnect has resulted from the fact that many references that provide a more complete and accurate picture of the actual policies and actions taken to successfully defeat the insurgencies have remained out of the reach of non-government researchers and the general public. Accordingly, many subsequent studies of counterinsurgency overlook, or only provide a cursory treatment of, aspects that may have had a critical impact on the success of past US counterinsurgency operations. One such aspect is the role of US direct intervention in the internal affairs of a supported country. Another is the role of covert action operations in support of counterinsurgency operations. As a result, the counterinsurgency policies and doctrines that have been developed over the years are largely based on false assumptions, a flawed understanding of the facts, and a misunderstanding of the contexts concerning the cases because of misleading, or at least seriously incomplete, portrayals of the counterinsurgency operations.

A Pragmatic Standard of Legal Validity

Tyler, John 2012 May 1900 (has links)
American jurisprudence currently applies two incompatible validity standards to determine which laws are enforceable. The natural law tradition evaluates validity by an uncertain standard of divine law, and its methodology relies on contradictory views of human reason. Legal positivism, on the other hand, relies on a methodology that commits the analytic fallacy, separates law from its application, and produces an incomplete model of law. These incompatible standards have created a schism in American jurisprudence that impairs the delivery of justice. This dissertation therefore formulates a new standard for legal validity. This new standard rejects the uncertainties and inconsistencies inherent in natural law theory. It also rejects the narrow linguistic methodology of legal positivism. In their stead, this dissertation adopts a pragmatic methodology that develops a standard for legal validity based on actual legal experience. This approach focuses on the operations of law and its effects upon ongoing human activities, and it evaluates legal principles by applying the experimental method to the social consequences they produce. Because legal history provides a long record of past experimentation with legal principles, legal history is an essential feature of this method. This new validity standard contains three principles. The principle of reason requires legal systems to respect every subject as a rational creature with a free will. The principle of reason also requires procedural due process to protect against the punishment of the innocent and the tyranny of the majority. Legal systems that respect their subjects' status as rational creatures with free wills permit their subjects to orient their own behavior. The principle of reason therefore requires substantive due process to ensure that laws provide dependable guideposts to individuals in orienting their behavior. The principle of consent recognizes that the legitimacy of law derives from the consent of those subject to its power. Common law custom, the doctrine of stare decisis, and legislation sanctioned by the subjects' legitimate representatives all evidence consent. The principle of autonomy establishes the authority of law. Laws must wield supremacy over political rulers, and political rulers must be subject to the same laws as other citizens. Political rulers may not arbitrarily alter the law to accord to their will. Legal history demonstrates that, in the absence of a validity standard based on these principles, legal systems will not treat their subjects as ends in themselves. They will inevitably treat their subjects as mere means to other ends. Once laws do this, men have no rest from evil.
