Comparing Optical Coherence Tomography Radial and Cube Scan Patterns for Measuring Bruch’s Membrane Opening Minimum Rim Width (BMO-MRW) in Glaucoma and Healthy Eyes: Cross-sectional and Longitudinal Analysis

Kabbara, Sami 02 April 2018 (has links)
A Thesis submitted to The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine. / Background and Significance: Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is one of the most widely used imaging modality in Ophthalmology. It utilizes light waves to visualize the various layers of the retina. The OCT machines offer two different scan patterns, the circular and the cube scan patters. It is important to compare these scan pattern to see if any discrepancy exist in quantifying retinal indices. One of the newer indices is the Bruch’s membrane opening minimum rim width (BMO-MRW), which is the minimum distance between from the BMO to the inner limiting membrane (ILM). The BMO-MRW is being used in the diagnosis of glaucoma. Hypothesis: To compare the cube and radial scan patterns of the SD-OCT for quantifying the BMO-MRW. We hypothesis that there might be some differences between the two scan patterns.

Development of canned line-start rim-driven electric machines

Tuohy, Paul Michael January 2011 (has links)
Electric machines are being deployed in industrial applications where previously only mechanical systems were considered, as environmental concerns from burning fossil fuels and energy costs are becoming a more dominant factor in system design considerations. Electric machines offer greater operational flexibility and typically higher efficiencies. There has therefore been a growing demand to develop electric machines to replace traditional mechanical systems in a number of industrial applications. One such suitable electric machine topology is the 'direct-drive' machine. These machines can be used where implementation does not require a high operating speed, therefore eliminating the necessity of a gearbox. Furthermore, direct-drive machines offer a number of advantages including reductions in through-life costs, noise and vibration, and overall system volume. This thesis explores the development of direct-drive rim-driven machines, constructed by integrating a propeller with the electric machine that is driving it, by mounting the machine directly around the outside of the propeller. A novel machine topology was developed by integrating a conducting-can onto the rotor structure capable of producing induction torque, to create a motor that can start directly from the main electric supply. This eliminated the need for a power electronic converter, gearbox and complicated drive shafts arrangement, for use in applications where only a low duty cycle of operation was required such as secondary propulsion systems for marine applications or where safety and reliability is of significant importance. A number of other industrial applications that may benefit from this canned rim-driven topology were also identified including seal-less pumps and 'run-of-the-river' generators. Permanent-magnet and induction motor topologies operating in fluid environments were investigated, using finite element analysis and thermal analysis techniques, to examine and optimise the design of the rim-driven topology for a specific operational requirement, in each industrial application area identified. A 30 kW canned line-start rim-drive induction motor was designed and developed for use as a bi-directional thruster on-board a tidal stream turbine. A novel induction motor topology was developed utilising only a conducting-can on the rotor, which eliminated the need for a traditional squirrel-cage, due to the ratio of the relatively large mean air-gap diameter to the small output power requirement; creating a simple yet reliable direct-drive canned induction motor. The design of this motor was manufactured and successfully tested to validate the design process.

The phagocytes were incubated in RPMI-1640 supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum at 37°C (Control), in the same solution at 8ºC (Cold Control) and in three preserved solutions, Collins, Euro-Collins and University of wisconsin (UW)at 8ºC, during 1 or 24 hours. In phagocytic actívíty protocol, the results showed that in 1 hour of cold preservation only the Euro-Collins group was different of Control and other experimental groups. Macrophages preserved in Euro-Collins solution during 1 hour showed the smallest phagocytic index. The preservation by 24 hours promoted drop of phagocytlc activity in experimental groups. All groups presented statistical differences when compared with Control. The phagocytes preserved in Collins by 24 hours exposed the biggest phagocytic index when compared with Cold Control, Euro-Collins and UW solution. In other protocol, free radical production, the results showed that Euro-Collins group produced little superoxide when compared with Control, Collins and UW group. By the other hand, during 24 hours of preservation, macrophages preserved in Euro-Collins solution released superoxide like Control and UW groups. The Collins group showed little release of superoxide when compared with Control, Euro-Collins and UW solution. These results led us to say that: the time and temperature of preservation, as well as, the lonic composition of preserved solution affected the phagocytic activity and the productlon of superoxide; Collins and Euro-Collins group always were different, so the magnesium sulfate should be important in the functional activity of these cells; the preserved solutions didn't avoid the release of free radicals; and the substances of UW utilized to eliminate free radicals were not efficient in our experimental conditions / Mestrado / Fisiologia / Mestre em Ciências Biológicas

A qualitative study about how music can be used to develop phonological awareness inkindergarten

Lindström, Greta January 2021 (has links)

Förskollärares upplevelser av sång, rim och ramsor som ett hjälpmedel för barns språkutveckling / Preschool teachers' experiences of song, rhyme and rhymes as an aid for children's language development

Asserholt, Maria, Södergård, Caroline January 2022 (has links)

Comparative Analysis of Ceramics from Three Great Houses and One Small House Site in Southeast Utah

Harris, Rachel Marie 01 December 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Ceramics from three Utah great houses, Bluff, Cottonwood Falls, and Edge of the Cedars, were analyzed and compared with ceramics from Three Kiva Pueblo, which is not a great house site but was occupied contemporarily. Data on jar and bowl rim diameters were considered to understand great house feasting dynamics. Cooking jars with large rim diameters were more common at Three Kiva than they were at the great houses. This suggests that Three Kiva residents prepared large batches of food more frequently than great house residents. Distributions of Mancos Black-on-white bowl diameters were very similar at great houses and Three Kiva, but Three Kiva had bowls with larger diameters than those found at the great houses. Jar sizes suggest it is possible that feasting at great houses took place with a potluck model; however, bowl sizes suggest that Three Kiva also hosted feasts. Data on ceramic origins were considered to look for direction and strength of relationships with outside regions. All of the great houses had higher proportions of imported ceramics than Three Kiva, suggesting that great house residents interacted with people from other regions more frequently. All sites had large proportions of imported ceramics from the Kayenta region. All great house sites had Chuskan and Cibolan sherds, suggesting interaction with Chaco Canyon. Proportions of imported ceramics and the regions from which they came varied for each site, indicating that site residents maintained independent connections to people living in other regions.

Rim och ramsor i förskolan - Rhyme and nursery rhyme in preschool

Hildingson, Lisa January 2011 (has links)

Energy: More Than Just Terajoules for the South Pacific

Blunt, Robert Wayne 04 1900 (has links)
The oil shocks of the 1970's have revealed two important features of this commodity: I) that all countries use energy to achieve economic and social goals and 2) national stability and autonomy are closely linked to the security of its supplies. The South Pacific region has greatly experienced these effects in its pursuit of development, due to its increasing and nearly complete dependence on imported petroleum products. This is compounded by the situation of high expectations for a quality of life similar to the more developed nations of the Pacific Rim. Therefore the role of energy in these economies must be addressed before it is too late. / Thesis / Candidate in Philosophy
