Nos caminhos da natureza: análise de gêneros na abordagem sistêmico-funcional em livros didáticos de ciências naturais / In the paths of nature: genre analysis in systemic functional approach in textbooks of natural sciences

Silva, Thiago Santos da 19 October 2016 (has links)
This study aims to map genres used in the teaching of Natural Sciences in the Brazilian school context, more specifically in the 6th year textbooks. Therefore, the research is based on the theoretical and methodological perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), especially in studies related to genre analysis (MARTIN; ROSE, 2008; ROSE; MARTIN, 2012). We adopted as universe of analysis two textbooks offered by the Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (PLND) to Brazilian public schools of basic education in the 2014-2016 triennium (BRASIL, 2013). We selected as corpus chapters of these textbooks that approach three specific contents: living beings nutrition, garbage and macrocosm. The analytical procedures of the corpus followed the principles of Register and Genre Theory (EGGINS; MARTIN, 1997; MARTIN; ROSE, 2008). This analytical approach foresee the grammatical (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014) and discursive descriptions (MARTIN, 1992; MARTIN; ROSE, 2007) as the basis for identification of record patterns (HALLIDAY, 1989; MARTIN, 1992), which enables check genres used to teach the selected content (VEEL, 1997; COFFIN, 2006; MARTIN; ROSE, 2008; CHRISTIE; DEREWIANKA, 2010). The results in terms of mapped genres were similar to families identified by Veel (1997): procedures, reports, explanations and arguments. Our analysis allowed identifying an unpredicted family by the author, the family of histories. The occurrence of histories in the corpus is due to the Brazilian political-educational context, since the guiding documents of Natural Sciences teaching, such as the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCN) (BRASIL, 1998), advise working with contents that allow students to understand the relationships between the current scientific knowledge and its historical evolution. In addition, we also found a genre uncatalogued in previous studies of SFL. We call this genre, which we endorse as part of the family of procedures, procedure for analysis, since its social communicative purpose is request analysis on a given fact/social situation, especially those related to the environmental impact of human actions. The occurrence of this genre is also justified due to political and educational context of Brazil, since the PCN indicate as the goal of teaching Natural Sciences the interpretation of environmental imbalance situations resulting of human interference. Finally, our analysis allowed identifying that genres perform social and communicative purposes not only on the paradigmatic axis (MARTIN; ROSE, 2008), that is, as members of a specific family of genres, but also on the syntagmatic axis, this is, in the way they are combined in the structure of the macro genre book chapter. Our study found that each genre fulfills specific roles in the development of the content in the analyzed chapters. In general, we can ensure that reports and explanations perform the function of expanding the content addressed, the procedures serve to enlarge the content, arguments genres act to take the students to adopt particular placement in relation to the content, and histories serve to historically contextualize the subject studied. In short, although more research of this nature are necessary to strengthen or to reconsider the data we found, these results signal some important aspects of school culture in relation to the Natural Sciences teaching in the Brazilian context, and already show some language characteristics that can be used by language and/or Natural Sciences teachers in reading and writing activities about the phenomena of nature.

However, Vetromille-Castro considered that there were other values besides collaboration and autonomy which were shared among co-valorizing individuals (Piaget, 1973). It is precisely on this hypothesis that we developed this work. In this research we studied the interactive process in a group of trainee teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) in virtual learning environment forums. We analyzed the posts of 30 students, the e-learning tutor and two researchers from one of the support centers in four forums of the discipline of Spanish III in a teacher development course in a federal university in southern Brazil in a distance learning modality. The results were obtained by descriptive analysis of a qualitative nature and of a virtual ethnographic interpretation (HINE, 2004). In the interactions we confirmed the hypothesis that there were other values at stake in qualitative changes. In addition to collaboration and autonomy, we identified other values that were common among individuals in the groups, which behaved as complex adaptive (sub)systems (SAC) in each of the four studied forums, also considered as a SAC. Taking into consideration Schwartz s (1992) propositions, we have identified exchanges of mutual benefit (PIAGET, 1973) in each group that was formed in the forums, on a map of values of common scales around values such as equality, friendship, responsibility, creativity, solidarity, among others, besides those already noticed in previous work, namely collaboration and autonomy.

Devine, Josefin January 2013 (has links)

A systemic functional analysis of two Truth and Reconciliation Commission testimonies: transitivity and genre

Hattingh, Nathalie January 2011 (has links)
Masters of Art / This thesis examines how two narrators construe their experiences of the same events differently through the linguistic choices that they make, through a systemic functional analysis, as well as a genre analysis of two testimonies. The Human Rights Violations (HRV) hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) allowed testifiers to tell stories of their experiences during apartheid. The selected testimonies refer to the events that led up to the arrest and eventual torture of Faried Muhammad Ferhelst, as told by himself and his mother, Minnie Louisa Ferhelst. Theframeworks used to analyse the testimonies are drawn from the transitivity and genre theories of Systemic Functional Linguistics. A clausal analysis of the transitivity patterns is used to compare the ways in which the testifiers construct their identities and roles when recounting their stories. The transitivity analysis of both testimonies shows that both Mrs Ferhelst and Faried Ferhelst construe themselves as the Affected participant through Material, Mental and Verbal clauses, and construe the police as the Causers, mostly through Material clauses. A genre analysis revealed that both testimonies took the form of narratives, in particular the Recount, a typical genre for relating narratives of personal experience. This research project also explores how the original Afrikaans versions of the testimonies differ from the translated English versions, available online on the TRC website. The Afrikaans versions were transcribed by the researcher from audio-visual records. A transitivity analysis reveals that the interpretation of the Afrikaans testimonies is fairly accurate, with a minimum loss of meaning. Thus in the case of these testimonies, the actual online record in English is an accurate reflection of their stories. / South Africa

A systemic functional linguistics (SFL) analysis of Yoruba students’ narratives of identity at three Western Cape universities

Adetomokun, Idowu Jacob January 2012 (has links)
Masters of Art / There has been a great deal of research exploring Halliday’s (1978, 1994, 2004)Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) approach. However, there has been little work that specifically targets SFL to explore African discourse. Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) views language as “social semiotic”, that is, language is functional in terms of what it can do or what can be done with it; and semantic in that it is used to make meanings (Halliday’s, 1978). This study explores SFL to analyse narratives of identity as told by Yoruba students at three Western Cape Universities: University of the Western Cape (UWC), University of Cape Town (UCT) and University of Stellenbosch (SUN). This research is both quantitative and qualitative in outlook and results of the study are presented. I used the qualitative method to collect and analyse the data; but a certain amount of quantitative analysis was presented as well in order to determine the predominant identity options favoured by the students. A total of 14 Yoruba students were interviewed for data collection which was analysed with SFL interpersonal metafunction theoretical approach. Specifically, the study examines linguistic choices that the students utilize to maintain and reconstruct their identities in Cape Town. This concentrates on the aspects of Mood component combining Subject and Finite element, Residual component comprising Predicator, Complement and Adjunct as well as Modality in participants’ narratives. Besides, an important aspect of the study was the consideration given to ethical issues. Analyses are presented on tables showing the frequencies of the interpersonal elements as configuration for preference use of different Subjects, Finites, Predicators, Complement and Adjuncts to either strengthen or weaken positions. Equally, the metaphorically expressions of objectivity to highlight the continuities and contradictions in the students’ narratives of identity in the diaspora was considered. These serve as interpersonal elements used by participants for stylizing and personalizing different identities options. Also, the study presents how the students organize their message for cohesion/coherence in their narratives. Thus, SFL establishes how the linguistic choices of the students reflect identity options in their new environment. The study shows the strengths of systemic-functional approach in its integration of what the students said, with what they might mean within the situation in which they said them. Finally, I conclude that these elements of interpersonal metafunction framework make participants’ narratives coherent while revealing the different identities they appropriated in the diaspora.

Pilotstrejken : En kvalitativ textanalys av SAS kriskommunikation

Skeholt Röhne, Tova January 2020 (has links)

Carlén, Irina January 2020 (has links)
Research points at the textbook as the main source for mathematics development in the early school ages. The study enhances the concept of relational and instrumental understanding as means to address the teaching environment within textbooks. To investigate a part of the linguistic structure of this literature, this study reports on the main features that characterize the word class known as verbs due to their presence throughout a series of textbooks designed for the stages 1 to 3 in Sweden. The goal was to make common claims about frequency, tense and processes due to these verbs. By creating a specialized corpus, these verbs were catalogued and marked in comparison to two larger corpora and to GERS-levels. A process analysis was then done based on a systemic-functional linguistic tool. The results show a vast difference between the low- and the high frequency verbs. Analysis showed that present tense held the highest frequency by over 50%. Results also showed presence of the formal passive voice. Furthermore, the material processes were in a large majority in contrast to others present. Other indications of the analysis showed poor conditions for development of relational understanding in contrast to emphasis made in the national curriculum. Conclusions involve statements regarding textbook teaching methods not providing sufficient environments for language development. The characters of the verb corpus might place demands on students’ lexical knowledge and language proficiency level on forehand, which might induce a language-related knowledge barrier against the mathematical communication provided through the textbook.

: En kvalitativ studie med utgångspunkt i SFL:s metafunktioner / How do multimodal resources interact in teaching materials for Swedish as a second language? : A qualitative study based on SFL´s metafunctions.

Asima, Curkic January 2021 (has links)

Incorporate your own voice.

Rudén, Hanna January 2021 (has links)

Phraseology and its sociocultural component: teachers' perspectives on its teaching in the SFL classroom in Sweden. Methodology and challenges.

Fouces Canel, Cristina January 2023 (has links)
The importance of teaching phraseology in the SFL class is something that has been pointed out in recent years given its importance for the acquisition of the communicative competence and other key competences such as the sociocultural. The purpose of this study is to determine, through a survey, how SFL teachers in Sweden teach phraseology and its sociocultural component and what are the challenges SFL teachers in Sweden face when introducing idiomatic language in the classroom. Firstly, the results of this study indicate that there is a non-specific and heterogeneous methodology and that teachers are not fully aware of the importance of phraseology. Secondly, there are a series of challenges that teachers must face, mainly the lack of reference material for teaching phraseology and the lack of didactic material and didactic proposals for students. Additionally, the treatment given to phraseology both in didactic material and in curricula is also problematic. Other pitfalls that the teacher faces are lack of knowledge on the subject, confusing terminology or lack of time when planning their teaching. Therefore, the status of phraseology in the SFL class in Sweden is quite precarious. To begin with, the curricula need to resolve the terminological chaos and provide clear guidelines about which units are appropriate for each level. In the case of the Swedish curriculum there is also an additional pitfall, phraseology is mentioned very briefly and in a very imprecise way. Moreover, it is necessary for teachers to have manuals, dictionaries and specific material and didactic proposals suitable for students. In this way, phraseology will stop being an unknown subject and the importance of its teaching and learning for the acquisition of the target language will be understood.
