Araújo, Hugo Filgueiras de 03 December 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-05-14T12:11:47Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 1136421 bytes, checksum: 9994eeba66972fa1e6d6b3b8dffac526 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-12-03 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This thesis proposes a reading of the Phaedo, Plato, centered on the theme of the body / soul that permeates all arguments of the dialogue. Plato in his writings announces care for the soul, and consider it a source of knowledge and virtue, and even the "self" of man. The care and appreciation of the soul are so essential to Plato that in some parts of the Phaedo the philosopher, to relate it to the body, considered as a kind of prison for obstacle and understand that wisdom is sought by those who dedicated to philosophy, is beyond the sensitivity (aísthesis), and while the body is united, the soul will not reach the truth in its fullness. Being part of the body sensitive instance, the philosopher sets before him in an attitude of mistrust, but must admit that at other times by Plato believes that it (the body) and that it begins the search for truth, set by reminiscence thus acknowledging its role. This paper conducts a study on the body / soul considering that it is possible to establish a unified reading of the different ways in which it is presented from an aesthetic dimension: Plato speaks about the care that must be taken in dealing with the body because soul influenced the associated sensitivity that even imposing obstacles to knowledge is the means and instrument through the senses, so you can be learning about things. During the argument, some problems will be solved, because declare that the soul, in order of Forms immutable, can suffer change seems to be strange. The impasse is solved with the help of other dialogues: Republic, Phaedrus and Timaeus, who understand the soul as a reality of a mixed nature, being a metaxú, an intermediate between the divisible and indivisible, the Other and the Same, the mutable and immutable . Finally, the thesis incur the assertion that Plato in the Phaedo is proposing a project that teaches men to practice self-control.

SROGONČÍKOVÁ, Kateřina January 2011 (has links)
ABSTRACT This practice-oriented diploma paper consists of painting series of five larger-format paintings. These are made of acrylic paints on fibreboards. As regards the form and content, it is a coherent series focused on free artistic expression of personal emotional experiences of confidentially-known landscape poetry. It primarily attends to tree as a solitair. In it´s supporting theoretical thesis the work deals with a survey of selected form changes of equally ideologically oriented artistic acquisitions in South Bohemian landscape-painting genre.

Uma educação da alma: literatura e imagem arquetípica / An education of the soul: Literature and archetypal image

Eliana Braga Aloia Atihé 03 April 2006 (has links)
This present study tries to register images of a life history articulated by images of the literature - these latter ones appropriated by the subjectivity towards an education of the soul. Being so, I launch myself, starting from my experiences as a reader, into a theoretical-analytical path based on an anthropo-literary view in which literature is understood as myth and life history, i.e., as inter and intra-subjective symbolic mediator whose semantic openness is due mostly to the presence of the archetypal image - according to James Hillman\'s denomination ( 1995, 10). The pedagogical potentials of the literature are, in this way, transmitted by the images bearing an archetypal meaning that circulates from the text towards the life of the reader, to promote the equilibrium of the polarities, through the creative elaboration of alterity represented by the unconscious, in the construction of the ego´s identity. The thematic axe\'s that organize this study are: 1) The General Archetypology, of Gilbert Durand (1997); 2) the notion of image according to the Archetypal Psychology, of James Hillman (1997b). From an hermeneutic perspective, which looks for an openness that goes from the discourse towards the existential (Paula Carvalho, 1998, 59), I get images from three classical novels, in order to understand themselves in the convergence of life with reading, even guiding me to the direction of the discovery of my own essential image or daimon - in which I recognize the objective of education. The mentioned novels were read apart from school. Nevertheless, they became specially significant in my educational process due to the dynamism proposed by the official schooling dimension - also completely necessary so that this experience with meaning could be built. So, I come back to Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, as an example of a literature that forms the heroic sensibility; to Decameron, by Giovanni Bocaccio, as an example of a literature that forms the mystic sensibility; to O morro dos ventos uivantes, by Emily Brontë, as an example of a literature that forms the dramatic sensibility.

The present study inquires into cognitive and symbolic perceptions of individuals from the town of Fortaleza who adopt a vegetarian diet for religious motivations. They belong to a yoga line, in scope of the new religious movements. This study took place in the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University â BKWSU, in the aforementioned city, between the years 2007 and 2011, and used as methodological tools participant observation and semi-structured interviews with students and professors of this spiritual movement with a neo-hindu face. Initial interest was to understand foodrelated representations and practices, but as the research went on, the existence of a semantic confluence between religious sentiment and food became evident, both converging to the construction of a brahmin life regimen. So, food has its meaning widened and is considered here as a sign/metaphor to think the body and soul relationship, suggested by the behavior code â maryadas â of this spiritual movement. For the participants of this group, forms of thinking, feeling and seeing the world are the expression of a collective belonging, which is, at the same time, subjectified and resignified in terms of the self-improvement process and sacralisation of the world.

This study attempts to show the religious feeling that permeates the fictional universe of Saul Bellow. To this end, four expressive novels by Bellow were selected for more detailed analysis. This choice enables us to observe different forms of opening for the field of the transcendental, since each of Bellow’s protagonists does this in a particular way, or, more precisely, according to their circumstances, to their experiences, to their thoughts, and also to their intuitions. It happens that these characters invariably undertake a journey in search of self-knowledge. As to the analysis of these texts, it is carried out around two central themes. The first is that of death, or mortality, undoubtedly the most fundamental theme in the literary works of Bellow. The second is that of the spirit, or soul, which is also fundamental and generally linked or subordinated to the theme of death. To substantiate this analysis, we have used bibliographical references of Bellow and comments by literary critics on his writing, which are appropriate resources for this work which attempts to come to grips with the complex and intractable inspiration of Bellow.

De la vanité (ġurūr) dans Iḥyā’ ‘ulūm al-dīn (Revivification des sciences de la religion) d’al-Ġazālī (m. 505/1111) / Vanity (ġurūr) in Iḥyā’ ‘ulūm al-dīn (the Revival of Religious sciences) of al-Ġazālī (d. 505/1111)

Chacal, Lyess 06 March 2017 (has links)
This work explores the notion of vanity in Islam, or ġurūr, focusing on the major work of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ġazālī (d. 505/1111) Iḥyā ‘ulūm al-dīn. Our aim is to show how deception and illusion constitute a subject if not essential, at least underlying the ethics as discussed by Ġazālī. The analysis and the critical commentary on the three treatises of the Iḥyā’ enabled us to identify the key concepts and to highlight their interaction and the way in which they were articulated in this global "process" of the ġurūr. Different "actors" of the ġurūr have thus emerged such as the herebelow (al-dunyā), the Demon (al-Šayṭān) and the "ego" (al-nafs), each of them seeking to hinder the believer In his journey towards the hereafter. Our author has explored the vices and virtues of man in order to trace the way to an emancipation of all the blameable characters that can lead him to his loss. This thesis also shows how Ġazālī took advantage of his sources openly cited or not, perpetuating this theme of ġurūr in his own writings. Thus the known influence of al-Muḥāsibī (d. 243/857) and the less known or even ignored influence of al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmiḏī (d. 318/930) are dealt here by a synoptic comparison of their respective texts relating to the theme of ġurūr with the "Kitāb Ḏamm al-ġurūr" of the Iḥyā' in particular. This research also demonstrates the continuation of his writings in later writers such as Ibn al-Ǧawzī (d. 597/1201) and Ibn Qayyim al-Ǧawziyya (d. 750/1350) for example, both eminent figures of ḥanbalism.

Backlund, Viktor January 2020 (has links)
This essay explores the concept of soul in the theology of Sarah Coakley. This is done by analyzing the ideas in Coakleys work descriptively. The notion of soul has been found to have a close connection to two of Coakleys main ideas, those of desire and asceticism. From these ideas I have tried to add a concept of soul to Coakleys theological work.  The notion of the soul has its basis in the material body and its desires. Coakley understands the desires of the body as both sexual desire and desire for God. In her theology desire can be understood as a metaphor for the soul´s longing for God. From the desires of the material body this essay have shown that one can design a concept of soul in Coakleys theology. I argue that you can understand Coakleys theology better theoretically by engaging a concept of soul instead of just focusing on contemplative prayer as a way of reaching God and do academic theology. With a concept of soul in Coakleys theology it can work regardless of confession or religious practice and it makes the academic theology possible without depending on contemplation.

'Spirited bodies' as a prerequisite for an earth-keeping ethos : a juxtaposition on the first creation story of Genesis with ubuntu cosmogony

Nalwamba, Kuzipa January 2013 (has links)
Multidisciplinary contemporary discourse involving science, philosophy and theology has explored themes of creation and human identity. Contemporary critiques of anthropocentricism stem from such discourse. The understanding of human beings as ‘spirited bodies’ rather than embodied spirits, arises from a non-reductionist physicalist standpoint. This is the point of departure for this thesis. The study attempts to explore the understanding of human beings as ‘spirited bodies’ from a non-reductionist physicalist view and as a metaphor for ‘fresh’ perspectives and insights that could potentially inform and/or shape a theologically grounded earth-keeping ethos on a different premise from the traditional dualistic hierarchical viewpoint. Methodologically, this study attempts to reflect a unitary approach to knowledge. The study views the subject through three prisms. Firstly it takes a retrospective look to account for perspectives that have shaped hierarchical views of creation based on a dualistic principle that in turn have shaped the human power-dominion relationship with the rest of creation that is deemed to have led to the devastating eco-crisis the world faces today. Secondly, it considers a non-reductionist physicalist viewpoint that has challenged dualistic anthropological views of being in favour of the conception of human beings as ‘spirited bodies’ and which places human beings in a continuum with the rest creation. Thirdly, it picks up on Moltmann’s Trinitarian and pneumatological views of creation which orient the theological framework anchored on the community and communion within the triune relationship. Human solidarity with the rest of creation is then posited as the nexus that converges the strands of these different perspectives. The juxtaposition of the Genesis 1 creation story with Zambian cosmogony constitutes ‘case studies’ that illustrate how the fresh perspectives on creation and human identity open up an ‘interpretive space’ that could locate human beings in a continuum with the rest of creation and offer insight for an alternative earth-keeping ethos. Human solidarity with the rest of creation thus critiques traditional western dualistic and hierarchical conceptions of creation on one hand, and serves as an orienting concept for the ‘fresh’ earth-keeping ethos this study proposes on the other. / Dissertation (MA Theol)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Dogmatics and Christian Ethics / unrestricted

The soul is with the body : epicurean theory of the living-being in dialogue with Aristotle

Scalas, Giulia 29 March 2019 (has links)
My thesis aims at providing an explanation for the Epicurean theory of the living being by accounting for the relationship body and soul entertain in psycho-biological phenomena. In other words, the aim of this thesis is to investigate in which manner and to what extent both the body and the soul are involved in vital phenomena such as sleep, breathing, digestion etc. To this purpose, sections 1 and 2 will deal more closely with Epicurus’ psychological doctrine, while sections 3 and 4 will integrate the discussion with Epicurus’ account of (psycho-)biological phenomena. Accordingly, section 1 will provide a reconstruction of Epicurus’ psychological doctrine through an analysis of Epicurus’ own writings (Letter to Herodotus; Book XXV of the Peri Physeos), Epicurean testimonies (including Lucretius but also Demetrius Lacon and Diogenes of OEnoanda) and anti-Epicureans accounts (Cicero, Plutarch, etc.). Section 2 will offer a dialectical explanation for the development of Epicurus’ psychology (as reconstructed in section 1) in its relationship with the previous philosophical background, Democritus and Aristotle specifically. Section 3 will consider the physio-biological theory from book IV of the De rerum natura and will acknowledge the links this entertains with Epicurus’ psychological theory. In this context, Epicurean explanations of psycho-biological phenomena will be compared with those offered by the atomist, Peripatetic and medical milieu. Lastly, section 4 will offer a comparison between Epicurus’ psycho-biological theories and those of Asclepiad of Bithynia and will examine their respective application in the context of explaining diseases.

An intra-textual study of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics Book VI and the role of the five states of the rational soul

Leeflang, Arne Karl 20 July 2011 (has links)
In Book VI of the Nicomachean Ethics Aristotle makes the assumption that there are five states of the soul through which we interact with truth. He continues Book VI with a discussion of his intended meaning of each of these states of the soul. In this study the relevant discussions on each state are extracted from the text to enable a clearer understanding of these states, as Aristotle presents them. Subsequently, the role of each state is studied in the context of the entire Nicomachean Ethics. The primary focus is directed at a clearer understanding of Aristotle’s proposed intellectual virtues, and on their respective roles in the ethical life. Simultaneously, the ethical life that Aristotle presents, and its ultimate end eudaimonia, or happiness, are approached from this perspective. Aristotle argues that reason is the distinguishing feature of humans, and that man’s excellence must include the excellent use of this capacity. This study investigates how Aristotle proposes that the rational intellect should reach its completion, and comes to the conclusion that true mastery of the intellect can only result from the cooperation of the five states of the rational soul. It becomes evident that each state of the soul has a different nature and function, and that through directed cooperation they do not compete with one another, but are mutually enhanced. However, Aristotle repeatedly emphasises the importance of extending thought into action. This makes Aristotle’s ethical theory so attractive: he manages to consolidate his theorizing with the value of experienced reality. This is his essential key to happiness, which is experienced both in perception and in action. By approaching the Nicomachean Ethics from the perspective of the five states of the rational soul, an appreciation is acquired for the fine balance by which action and reason may combine to result in man’s fulfilment of his highest potential. It is in this balance that one finds the secret to eudaimonia. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Ancient Languages / unrestricted
