The situation of the Brazilian reality in health has been constituted to multidetermined phenomena; it has remained important and serious social problems and reproductive health among teenagers. The inopportune pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) diseases . These two items show the need to strongly connect the areas of health and education in order to conduct the promotion and health education aimed, in this case, sexual and reproductive health of teenagers. Objective: to analyze the results of operations and the performance of a health professional , as an educator in Teenager Health , especially in sexual and reproductive area , by students of a municipal school in Santa Maria / RS . Methods: exploratory and descriptive research, the type quantity / quality. In school year 2013, 17 meetings / interventions of health professionals of a Family Health Strategy (fortnightly periodicity) with 32 teenagers aged between 12 and 14 years were performed . It has used a participatory methodology and applied a pre and post-test questionnaire and individual interviews. Results and discussion: Project added knowledge about sexual and reproductive health. It was found that the performance of combined actions (health and school) may contribute to the development of more informed and more critically reflective teenagers, especially when it comes to issues of complex approach, not included in the formal curriculum. Working with sensitive issues related to sexual and reproductive health, in a dynamic, honest and participatory approach it can be an efficient strategy to promote behavior change towards sexuality of teenagers. Final Thoughts: through this study, we realized the importance of the implementation of a participatory and continuous education, offered by qualified and licensed personnel working with sexual and reproductive health. / A conjuntura da realidade brasileira em saúde tem se constituído de fenômenos multideterminados; perduram importantes e graves problemas sociais e de saúde reprodutiva entre os adolescentes. Podem-se citar a gravidez inoportuna e as Doenças Sexualmente Transmissíveis (DSTs). Esses dois itens evidenciam a necessidade de conectar, fortemente, as áreas da saúde e da educação, a fim de efetivar a promoção e educação em saúde visando, nesse caso, à saúde sexual e reprodutiva dos adolescentes. Objetivo: analisar os resultados de intervenções e a atuação de um profissional da saúde, como educador em Saúde do Adolescente, principalmente, na área reprodutiva e sexual, com alunos de uma escola municipal de Santa Maria/RS. Métodos: pesquisa exploratória e descritiva, do tipo quanti/qualitativo. Durante o ano letivo de 2013, foram realizados 17 encontros/ intervenções de profissionais da saúde de uma Estratégia Saúde da Família (periodicidade quinzenal), com 32 adolescentes, com idade entre 12 e 14 anos. Utilizou-se a metodologia participativa. Aplicou-se um questionário pré e pós-teste e entrevista individual. Resultados e discussão: o Projeto acrescentou conhecimentos sobre a saúde sexual e reprodutiva. Verificou-se que a realização de ações combinadas (saúde e escola) pode contribuir para o desenvolvimento de adolescentes mais informados e criticamente mais reflexivos, principalmente, quando se trata de temas de abordagem complexa e não contemplados em currículo formal. O trabalho com temas sensíveis relacionados à saúde sexual e reprodutiva, em uma abordagem dinâmica, honesta e participativa pode constituir-se em estratégia eficiente para promover possíveis mudanças de comportamento dos adolescentes frente à sexualidade. Considerações finais: por meio deste estudo, percebeu-se a relevância da execução de ações educativas participativas e continuadas, ofertadas por pessoal qualificado e habilitado a trabalhar com saúde sexual e reprodutiva.

"Det är nödvändigt att formulera ramar" : En kritisk diskursanalys av Skolverkets stödmaterial Sex- och samlevnadsundervisning i särskolan

The aim for this study is to examine the educational material ​Sex- och samlevnadsundervsining i särskola (2014), directed to teachers in schools for children with disabilities. The material is produced by Skolverket (the Swedish National Agency for Education) and aim to support teachers in their sexuality education classes. This study examines how the material manages discourses regarding sexuality, heteronormativity and gender for students with disabilities. The material is also being compared with another educational material by Skolverket aimed for teachers in primary school. It is a qualitative study that is conducted with the method of a critical discourse analysis, through the perspective of crip theory and queer temporality, both developed within queer theory. The result of the studies shows, among other things, that Skolverket applies a norm-critical perspective in the material through a normats point of view, and by that means maintains the dichotomy between normat and disabled. Skolverket is also contributing to discourses regarding social norms, such as what is “right” and “wrong”, which can limit the students from exploring their sexuality.

"Breaking the lawn chair, skinning the fish" : Categorization and Gender Differences in Slang Use in the TV Series Sex Education

This essay, entitled “Breaking the lawn chair, skinning the fish” - Categorization and Gender Differences in Slang Use in the TV Series Sex Education, claims that slang is part of our everyday language use and it can be found even on TV nowadays. In fact, contemporary TV series often portray a language use that includes informal language and slang expressions and words. This study aims to categorize slang expressions and words and identify gender differences in slang use in the British TV series Sex Education. By integrating quantitative and qualitative methods, the study contrasts Eble’s (1996) and Zotevska’s (2014) categorizations of slang and highlights gender perspectives on language use. First of all, the results show that Eble’s categorization proves to be incomplete to categorize the slang expressions in Sex Education. Furthermore, Zotevska’s categorization shows that a pervasive presence of taboo words and expressions is found in slang usage, whereas proper slang and pragmatic markers constitute a limited amount of the total. Secondly, the results highlight male characters as predominant slang-users. The collected data also indicate an increased presence of slang expressions and words in female speech, as a result of their emancipation and higher levels of participation in Western Societies.

Sex Education 101 : Constructing Gender, Sexuality, and the Body in the Revised Swedish High School Curriculum. An Intersectional Critique

In February 2021 the Swedish government announced the revision of curricula in every educational level, to correspond to the Sexuality, Consent and Relationships knowledge field. The purpose of this research is to explore the ways the Swedish high school curriculum, with the support of Skolverket’s webpage, has integrated notions of a) gender and sexuality, b) body in connection to sexuality and c) ethnicity, concerning students. This paper begins with the historical context of sex education in Sweden, reaching the current situation. Then, with a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, it attempts to answer the research questions, based on theories from both pedagogical and gender studies to set the basis for the research analysis. The major finding of this research is that the curriculum addresses to large extent issues of inclusivity around gender and ethnicity, with a focus on gender-based violence and consent in relationships. On the other hand, the human body is not actively present in that process, while students’ sexuality is presented as more passive than active. Finally, the language of this new curriculum works in many cases in a cisnormative way while there are parts where language is more inclusive. Τhis research suggests that Swedish educational policies rethink issues of identity in relation to sex education and that they imagine a more active role for students in their own sex education.

Bakgrund: Tidigare forskning visar att ungdomar är missnöjda med sex och samlevnadsundervisningen som bedrivs i skolan och uppger att de troligtvis skulle agerat annorlunda kring sexuella handlingar om de fått tillräcklig och relevant undervisning i tidig ålder. Syfte: Att undersöka lärares upplevelser av att undervisa i sex och samlevnad för högstadieelever. Metod: En kvalitativ innehållsanalys med induktiv ansats användes för att besvara syftet. I studien intervjuades sex högstadielärare från fyra olika grundskolor i Sydvästra Sverige. Resultat: I resultatet uttrycker lärarna att sex och samlevnadsundervisningen är ett viktigt och roligt ämne att undervisa i. De anser det angeläget att inkludera eleverna i undervisningen för att fånga deras upplevda behov. Lärarna upplever att undervisningen leder till ett mer respektfullt bemötande mellan eleverna. Det är en utmaning för lärarna att anpassa undervisningen för att tillgodose elevernas behov. En önskan från lärare är ett bättre och utökat samarbete med ungdomsmottagningarna. Konklusion: För att integrera ungdomar med samhället och främja en positiv sexuell hälsa är det av betydande roll att ungdomen får en individanpassad och grundläggande sex och samlevnadsundervisning de är i behov av. / Background: Previous research shows that adolescents are dissatisfied with sex and cohabitation education conducted at school and state that they would probably have acted differently about sexual acts if they had received adequate and relevant education at an early age. Aim: To examine teachers' experience of teaching sex and cohabitation for high school students. Method: A qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was used to answer the purpose. The authors interviewed six grade school teachers from four different schools in Southwest Sweden. Results: The teachers express that sex and cohabitation education is an important and fun subject to teach. They consider it important to include the students in the education in order to capture their perceived needs. The teachers feel that the teaching leads to a more respectful treatment between the students. It is a challenge for teachers to adapt the teaching to meet students' needs. A wish from teachers is a better and expanded collaboration with the youth clinics. Conclusion: In order to integrate young people with society and to promote positive sexual health, it is important that the youth receive an individualized and basic sex and co-education they need.

Ungdomar och unga vuxnas kunskap, attityder och värderingar om reproduktiv och sexuell hälsa / Knowledge, attitudes and values about reprodutive and sexual health among adolescents and young adults

The average age of first-time mothers is increasing, along with the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. This indicates a low level of knowledge about fertility and an increased sexual risk-taking among young people. The aim of this study was to explore knowledge, attitudes and values about reproductive and sexual health among adolescents and young adults. An overview of the current literature was made using an integrated analysis method, including sixteen studies. The result showed an extensive lack of knowledge among young people regarding fertility, reproductive and sexual health. Many youths lacked knowledge about contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. A majority of the young people were not aware of the significance of age or the impact that sexually transmitted diseases had on their fertility. Many of the young people did however have knowledge about lifestyle factors such as smoking and diet and their impact on health. There was a positive attitude towards fertility treatments along with an overestimation of the efficiency of such treatments. The main part of the young people felt that the sex education they received was inadequate and lacked depth. It was also normative and old-fashioned. With a lack of proper education in school young people used other sources of information such as parents, friends or pornography. Young people expressed a want for easily accessible sources of information and more discussion about relations, consent and sexual abuse. More practical information was requested also. Midwives and nurses were good sources of information, a good opportunity to discuss their reproductive and sexual health was in connection with testing against sexually transmitted diseases or contraceptive counselling. In conclusion, this study showed a need for more sources of correct information regarding reproductive and sexual health that young people can easily access. Sexual education today needs to be modernized to be more inclusive to meet the needs and expectations of young people. / Medelåldern för när kvinnor föder sitt första barn har stigit, det har också förekomsten av sexuellt överförbara infektioner. Dessa fakta kan tyda på en låg kunskap om fertilitet och ett sexuellt risktagande hos unga personer idag. Syftet med studien var att undersöka vad ungdomar och unga vuxna har för kunskaper, attityder och värderingar avseende reproduktiv och sexuell hälsa. En litteraturöversikt gjordes med en integrativ analysmetod. Litteraturöversikten inkluderade sexton studier. I analysen framkom en utbredd kunskapsbrist hos ungdomar gällande fertilitet, reproduktiv och sexuell hälsa. Många ungdomar saknade kunskap om preventivmedel och sexuellt överförbara infektioner. En majoritet var inte medvetna om ålderns betydelse för fertiliteten eller hur sexuellt överförbara infektioner kan påverka fertiliteten. Många hade dock kunskap om livsstilsfaktorer som till exempel rökning och kost och dess påverkan på hälsan. I analysen framkom också en positiv inställning och övertro till fertilitetsbehandlingar. Huvuddelen av ungdomarna ansåg att den sexualundervisning de fått i skolan var bristfällig och saknade djup. Den upplevdes också som normativ och gammeldags. I brist på undervisning från skolan användes alternativa källor till information såsom föräldrar, kamrater eller pornografi. Ungdomarna efterfrågade lättillgängliga källor för information och mer diskussion om relationer, samtycke och sexuella övergrepp. Även praktisk information efterfrågades. Barnmorskor och sjuksköterskor ansågs vara bra källor i undervisningen, ett bra tillfälle att diskutera sin reproduktiva och sexuella hälsa var i samband med provtagning av könssjukdomar och preventivmedelsrådgivning. Slutsatsen från denna studie var att ungdomar behöver flera källor för korrekt information om sin reproduktiva och sexuella hälsa. Skolans sexualundervisning behöver moderniseras för att bli mer inkluderande och för att möta de behov och önskemål som finns hos ungdomar.

Abstract This study is based on a qualitative observational study of sex education. The observations were carried out in four classes in a high school year 1 in southwest Sweden. The purpose was to create an understanding of how society's discourse on relationships, consent and sexuality is expressed among students. In the study, the reactions and word choices used by the students were observed. The reactions were interpreted as an expression of the norms that the students learned from gender socialization, which are heteronormative. The theories applied in the study are sociology of emotions, which means the difference between emotions and feelings and their expression. Discourse was chosen as a theory and means that the language of one's surroundings is how one percieves it. Finally, gender socialization was chosen as a concept to describe and analyze the norms, values, and perceptions the indivitual has grown up in that govern one's behavior. The metod used to analyze the empiric discourse analysis to understand the way in which student's behavior reflects society. The study is also based on reflexive methodology, which means that the researcher's previous knowledge of the subject helps one understand the whole.  The result of the study was that the student's reactions and ideas show that the discourse they refer to is heteronormative. The sociological contribution is to increase knowledge about the effects that arise with and without sex education, so that they themselves can influence their lives and surroundings. / Studien bygger på en kvalitativ observationsundersökning av sexualundervisning.Observationerna genomfördes i fyra klasser i en gymnasieskola i årskurs 1 i sydvästraSverige. Syftet var att skapa en förståelse kring hur diskursen samhället har kring relationer,samtycke och sexualitet uttrycker sig bland eleverna. I studien observerades de reaktioner ochordval som eleverna använde. Reaktionerna tolkades som ett uttryck för de normer someleverna lärt sig genom könssocialisation, vilka är heteronormativa. De teorier som tillämpas istudien är emotionssociologi som innebär skillnaden mellan känslor och emotioner samt derasuttryck. Diskurs valdes som teori och innebär att språket om sin omgivning är så en uppfattarden. Till sist valdes könssocialisation som begrepp för att beskriva och analysera de normer,värden och föreställningar individen vuxit upp i som styr ens beteenden.Metoden som användes för att analysera empirin var diskursanalys för att förstådet sätt som elevernas beteende speglar samhället. Studien utgår även från reflexivmetodologi som innebär att de förkunskaper forskaren har kring ämnet hjälper en att förståhelheten.Resultatet av studien blev därmed att elevernas reaktioner och föreställningar visar påatt diskursen de relaterar till är heteronormativ. Det sociologiska bidraget är att öka kunskapkring vilka effekter som uppstår med och utan sexualundervisning, för att de själva ska kunnapåverka sitt liv och omgivning.

[pt] Devido ao tabu que se encontra ao abordar educação sexual como estratégia de prevenção ao abuso sexual, torna-se relevante entender o que crianças, adolescentes e responsáveis sabem e pensam sobre esse assunto. Nessa direção, a presente dissertação teve por finalidade identificar e analisar sentidos atribuídos por famílias atendidas no projeto Talentos do Tatame, em Petrópolis, acerca da educação sexual de crianças e adolescentes. Além disso, identificar se e como campanhas de prevenção ao abuso sexual atingem crianças, adolescentes e familiares; analisar resistências à temática da educação sexual nos espaços de socialização de crianças e adolescentes e verificar a existência de diálogo, no seio da família, sobre proteção do corpo como forma de cuidado. De abordagem qualitativa, a pesquisa adotou como instrumento de produção de dados a realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas com crianças, adolescentes e responsáveis inseridos no projeto Talentos do Tatame. Para análise do material empírico produzido, utilizou-se o método de interpretação de sentidos atribuídos. Os resultados revelaram que, apesar do tabu que perdura em torno da temática, crianças, adolescentes e responsáveis têm interesse em conhecer mais sobre educação sexual, bem como a presença de mulheres como principais responsáveis pelas informações sobre o cuidado ao corpo. A análise dos dados permitiu conhecer diversas formas de cuidado a que as famílias atribuem o sentido de ações de prevenção ao abuso sexual, conferindo-lhes importância. / [en] Due to the taboo found when addressing sex education as a strategy to prevent sexual abuse, it is relevant to understand what children, adolescents and guardians know and think about this subject. In this sense, this dissertation aimed to identify and analyze meanings attributed by families assisted in the Talents of Tatami project, in Petrópolis, about the sexual education of children and adolescents. In addition, identify whether and how sexual abuse prevention campaigns affect children, adolescents and family members; to analyze resistance to the theme of sexual education in the spaces of socialization of children and adolescents and to verify the existence of dialogue within the family about the protection of the body as a form of care. From a qualitative approach, the research adopted as an instrument for data production the realization of semi-structured interviews with children, adolescents and guardians inserted in the Project Talents of Tatami. For the analysis of the empirical material produced, the method of interpretation of assigned meanings was used. The results revealed that, despite the taboo that persists around the theme, children, adolescents and guardians are interested in knowing more about sex education, as well as the presence of women as main responsible for information on body care. Data analysis allowed us to know several forms of care to which families attribute the meaning of actions to prevent sexual abuse, giving them importance.

A Case Study of Student Leadership and Service in a Catholic Female Single-Sex High School

The purpose of this study was to research student perspectives about, and participation in, leadership and service at Catholic female single-sex high schools. This study draws data from a Catholic female single-sex high school in a metropolitan area of the United States. Data collection included school document review, site observation, and interviews of current students (n=10), young alumnae (n=5), mature alumnae (n=5), and current faculty and staff (n=6). The data was analyzed using an adapted theoretical framework of Wenger's (1998) social theory of learning, informed by Lave and Wenger's (1991) concept of communities of practice. This study addresses how the situated experience of the Catholic female single-sex high school affects students' expectations, values, and behaviors regarding leadership and service. The data show that the situated experience of a Catholic female single-sex high school encouraged engagement and interest in leadership and service. Students were empowered to believe that gender should not be an obstacle in seeking positions of leadership or service. However, although the environment was successful in advocating for participation in leadership and service, the social structure, social practices, identity formation, and situated environment tended to reinforce traditional gender-based notions of leadership and service. The culture of the school did not encourage the use of a critical lens to view the inequity that women experience, resulting in student expectations, behaviors, and values that were reproduced from the dominant culture in society. Student relationship to community and Catholicity is also discussed. In order to achieve the benefits of female empowerment advocated by the school, greater emphasis should be placed on identifying and addressing the obstacles to female leadership and service in society at large. There should be continued research to identify effective strategies for empowering female students to participate in leadership and service opportunities in high school, while providing them with a clearer sense of the challenges they will face in leadership and service positions later in life. In this way, the mission of Catholic female single-sex high schools can be more fully realized, which will hasten the day when true gender equity is achieved in the broader social context.
