Examining the Complexities of Fostering Social Inclusion in Elementary Classrooms

The purpose of this 1-year case study was to understand how 5 elementary school teachers in an inner-city school foster social inclusion. Through classroom observations and interviews, the study examined the variations of classroom practices the teachers used to create inclusive environments, the challenges they faced in the process, and the strategies they developed to address these challenges. How their work in the classroom interacted with the school's organizational structures was also explored. Three concepts frame the study: a broad conception of social inclusion that addresses multiple aims for creating an environment of belonging and takes students of all social identities into account; a detailed conception of the practice of social inclusion from a range of theoretical perspectives and teachers' experiences; and a situated conception of context that interrelates the classroom with the school and the community. Three dimensions of pedagogy—content-based practices, relations, and structures—are used to identify and compare principles of inclusive practice. The study portrays the interactions of daily classroom life through cross-case analysis and reveals the complex decision-making processes that teachers use to foster social inclusion. This study builds on growing scholarship in the field of social inclusion in education (Ainscow et al., 2006; Dei, 1996a; Kosnik & Beck, 2009; Kumashiro, 2002; Topping & Maloney, 2005) and on the increased interest in inclusive pedagogical practices. The in-depth portraits of the teachers’ classroom practices are compared to literature in 4 areas: citizen-based pedagogy, culture-based pedagogy, race-based pedagogy, and anti-oppression pedagogy. The teachers’ practices are analyzed in relation to 2 principles of social inclusion: connecting content to students’ lives and creating mutually supportive social spaces. The study revealed that the participants' practices were mainly associated with pedagogies based on citizenship and culture, with some connections to race-based and anti-oppression pedagogies. What differentiates this study from most other studies in this area is its detailed attention to the dynamic complexity of applying principles of social inclusion to practice. The portraits offer insights into inclusive work in classrooms that will benefit teachers, teacher educators, and researchers interested in expanding the field of social inclusion in education.

Social Cohesion in Multicultural Society : A Case of Bangladeshi Immigrants in Stockholm

Due to the rapid urbanization and globalization, urban social life is getting more complex thanever. Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden, is the residence of about 180 nationalities thatmakes it one of the prominent multicultural cities in Europe. Moreover, sustainable developmentis one of the main goals of the Swedish government. In this circumstance, it is the challenge tomake a socially cohesive society to ensure its social and economic development. This study isaimed to have an inner look at social cohesiveness between Bangladeshi community and otherethnic groups including native Swedish in Stockholm from a qualitative research approach. Asocial cohesion framework has been formulated by analyzing various literatures for the purposeof this study. This social cohesion framework comprises of social, cultural, political andeconomic indicators to understand the different dimensions of social cohesion in Stockholm.This framework is used during preparation of the questionnaire for conducting the qualitativesurvey that includes twelve in-depth interviews. Empirical result reveals that Bangladeshicommunity has a weak sense of belonging and a lack of common identity to the mainstreamsociety, rather they have stronger attachment to other Bangladeshi immigrants in Stockholm.Although lack of social cohesiveness has been found between Bangladeshi immigrants and otherresidents in Stockholm, but many threats to social cohesion (for example; racial conflict) areabsent in Stockholm. Therefore, it is a reachable challenge to make this society cohesive for thebetterment of the country by initiating proper measures.

Participatory Governance of the 900 Pandora Block and the Street Community

In response to the continuing challenges of homelessness in Victoria, BC, a variety of homeless-serving agencies are active in the region. Community concerns about these services have given rise to the practice of developing Good Neighbour Agreements (‘GNA’) and forming Good Neighbour Groups (‘GNG’) with local community members to monitor the social services, mitigate conflict, and prevent undesired impacts on the neighbourhoods. Based in an interpretive description methodology using interviews and document analysis, the purpose of this research is to explore the involvement of the street community in the development of one GNA and subsequent governance activities of the associated GNG. Findings demonstrate that individuals from the street community generally have not been directly involved but instead represented by a local homeless-serving agency, a model of representation that has important limitations. Despite the lack of formal involvement, people from the street community continued to engage independently in neighbourhood matters, undertaking ongoing advocacy work that in turn helped to yield greater participation of the street community in the GNG. / Graduate / 0617 / 0452 / 0615 / crossgeoff@yahoo.ca

This thesis aims to provide a critical evaluation of the Third Way and its reflections on Turkish politics. The Third Way emerged in the late 1990s with a claim to provide an alternative both to the old social democracy of welfare state period and to neo-liberalism. Based on a specific account of the radically changed world, the Third Way has maintained that the new conditions have rendered the old conceptualizations, as well as the old political positions, invalid. In this sense, this thesis argues that the re-definitions of the state and society relationship, the citizenship and the global order that the Third Way theory pursue have become the hegemonic notions of the current political context. It also claims that the Third Way can be considered as a product of the common attempts maintained by various approaches to complement the competitive market mechanism with social solidarity based on a socially inclusive strategy. The reflections of the Third Way on current Turkish political atmosphere are assessed in the thesis as further proofs of the hegemonic position that the Third Way occupies.

Την δεκαετία 2000-2010 το ελληνικό κράτος παρεμβαίνει στους πληθυσμούς των Τσιγγάνων μέσω δύο προγραμμάτων: του Ολοκληρωμένου προγράμματος Δράσης για την Κοινωνική Ένταξη των Ελλήνων Τσιγγάνων και του Προγράμματος Ένταξης των Τσιγγανοπαίδων στο Σχολείο. Το πρώτο πρόγραμμα που υλοποιείται από το τότε ΥΠΕΣΔΔΑ στόχο έχει να μεριμνήσει για τη χορήγηση εγγυημένων δανείων στους Τσιγγάνους προκειμένου να ενταχθούν οικιστικά αποκτώντας ιδιόκτητη κατοικία. Το δεύτερο πρόγραμμα υλοποιείται από το ΥΠΕΠΘ και αφορά την Ένταξη των Τσιγγανοπαίδων στο Σχολείο, μέσα από ένα πλέγμα ενεργειών. Στην παρούσα έρευνα εξετάζουμε την ένταξη των οικογενειών των Τσιγγάνων ως παράγοντα που διαφοροποιεί την φοίτηση των Τσιγγανοπαίδων. Εξετάζουμε αν η οικιστική, κοινωνική, οικονομική και εκπαιδευτική ένταξη των οικογενειών των Τσιγγάνων διαφοροποιεί ποσοτικά και ποιοτικά τη φοίτηση των τέκνων τους. Η έρευνα είναι ποιοτικής μεθοδολογίας. Βασίζεται σε συνδυασμό παρατήρησης και ανοικτής συνέντευξης με τους γονείς. Στο κείμενο των συνεντεύξεων έχει γίνει ανάλυση κειμένου. Παράλληλα έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί στοιχεία από παρατήρηση των Τσιγγάνων μαθητών στη σχολική τάξη και το προαύλιο και συνεντεύξεις με τους ίδιους και τους δασκάλους τους. Το θεωρητικό πλαίσιο που χρησιμοποιήσαμε εντάσσεται στη Νέα Κοινωνιολογία Της Εκπαίδευσης και συγκεκριμένα στο θεωρητικό σχήμα του Basil Bernstein. Tα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας επιβεβαιώνουν σε ένα μεγάλο βαθμό την αρχική μας υπόθεση. / The sociological dimension of the present study is based on the observation that the Greek contemporary educational system is demanded to solve the problems of an even more complicated social phenomenon: the integration of the Greek Gypsies. Considering the social framework of the modern educational system we claim that parental strategies could have deep positive impact not only on the acquisition of knowledge but also on social action. We argue that B. Bernstein’s theoretical framework relates, theoretically as well as methodologically, to the integration process of the young Gypsies in the school classroom. The methodology of the specific research process is based on the qualitative techniques of observation, interview and content analysis.

These initiatives, called the referenced field of Economic Development, are promoted as alternatives labor and social inclusion. The aim of this study was to investigate the inclusion of women in three experiments solidarity economy in the northern mining. We sought to examine to what extent this format work provides access to a regular income as the possibility of gains autonomy, recognition, qualification and self esteem / dignity. The study revealed that the groups studied undergo a series of shortcomings and are in a stage of dependence of incubation. The income gained for workers, not allowed an effective change in the output of poverty and precariousness, although significant improvements are seen. The changes in the sexual division of labor within and outside of workspaces, yet are barely noticeable. At another level, the impact of these experiences manifest themselves in strengthening social ties and belonging and social inclusion. / Nos últimos anos, tem crescido a participação de mulheres trabalhadoras em iniciativas populares de geração de trabalho e renda, baseadas no associativismo e em princípios de solidariedade, cooperação e autogestão. Essas iniciativas, referenciadas no chamado campo da Economia Solidária, são fomentadas como alternativas de trabalho e inclusão social. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a inserção das mulheres em três experiências de economia solidária na região norte mineira. Buscou-se analisar em que medida esse formato de trabalho possibilita o acesso a uma renda regular como a possibilidade de ganhos de autonomia, de reconhecimento, de qualificação e de autoestima/dignidade. O estudo revelou que os grupos pesquisados passam por uma série de deficiências e encontram-se em um estágio de dependência de incubação. A renda adquirida, para as trabalhadoras, não possibilitou uma mudança efetiva na saída das situações de pobreza e precariedade, embora melhorias sensíveis sejam percebidas. As mudanças na divisão sexual do trabalho, dentro e fora dos espaços de trabalho, ainda são pouco perceptíveis. Em outro plano, os impactos dessas experiências manifestam-se no fortalecimento dos laços sociais e de pertencimento e na inclusão social.

This paper will examine the perspective of social inclusion the latest energy plan developed by the Federal Government: the National Program of Biodiesel Production and Use - PNPB. It aims to find out whether that work with family farmers who participated in the PNPB socially included and what limits its inclusion. Secondly, the objective is to analyze the Brazilian biodiesel production and its uses. The methodology used for the preparation of this study was to examine the literature, visits to the study area, conducting interviews with the leadership of the settlement, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with families producing sunflower. Finally, the research dealt with the statistical data. After analyzing the data was verified that the instrument PNPB is able to promote the social inclusion of family farmers, but this occurred in the initial stages because the families involved need a minimum framework of organization and infrastructure to develop activities related to biodiesel / A necessidade de se tornar um pa?s autosuficiente energeticamente fez com que o Brasil buscasse fontes de energia renov?veis, em face da possibilidade de esgotamento do petr?leo nas pr?ximas d?cadas. The aim of the study is to contribute to a better understanding of how educators relate to social inclusion in preschool. Educators' perception of social inclusion is an important topic to investigate because there are often children who temporarily or permanently need special support in preschool. The inclusion of children in preschool is considered important and educators have a central role and responsibility to include all children in preschool. According to our experience, there is a great variety of how educators perceive the work of social inclusion in preschool.   In order to answer the question of how educators relate to social inclusion in preschool, it is chosen to conduct semi-structured, qualitative interviews. We interviewed eight preschool educators to find out how they perceive their work with social inclusion. The two themes that appeared in the educators’ answers were inclusion and exclusion.   The study found that preschool educators' work with social inclusion is complex. Educators in the study considered that all children have the right to enter into a social context, to be socially included, and they acknowledges their responsibility to ensure that all children are included. They expressed that it is not the responsibility of the children, but the adults, to ensure that all children are included in the group. Several of the educators express that there are difficulties and challenges with inclusion work, and state that children need to master certain social skills in order to be able to be included. Adaptation will lead to all children being given the opportunity to participate and succeed. The study further shows that the interviewed educators consider themselves responsible for creating opportunities that enable inclusion. The result of the study shows that for a functioning work with social inclusion, educator’ needs to form a common view and gain an understanding of the concepts of inclusion and exclusion among preschool teachers. The way educators perceive social inclusion, affects how educators work with social inclusion in preschool. In order to gain insight into, and in a more concrete way, an understanding of how preschool educators relate to social inclusion, it was chosen to accomplish this study. It is hoped that other preschool educators can benefit from the study's results in their professional role in the future.

Além disso, caracterizar a cidade de Franca e analisar o processo seletivo do Programa na cidade como triagem, cadastramento, confirmação e checagem da veracidade das informações. Com os referidos dados, buscou-se realizar uma análise de resultados do Programa em relação à frequência escolar e diminuição de taxa de mortalidade infantil das crianças das famílias beneficiárias. Em termos metodológicos, o levantamento bibliográfico é referenciado por fontes nacionais, composto por livros, artigos, jornais, relatórios e leis. Na pesquisa de campo foram realizadas visitas nos Centros de Referência da Assistência Social (CRAS) na cidade de Franca, que são divididos por regiões, com entrevistas com as assistentes sociais e visitas nas Secretarias Municipais da Ação Social, da Educação e da Saúde do município para coleta de dados e informações. Os resultados apontam para um número considerável de famílias beneficiárias do PBF, com um destacado contingente de pessoas em situações de risco, como moradores de rua e de famílias que têm algum membro encarcerado ou internado em medida socioeducativa, como no caso de adolescente infrator. The results point to a considerable number of PBF beneficiary families, with an outstanding contingent of people at risk, such as homeless people and families that have a member incarcerated or hospitalized for socio-educational measures, as in the case of adolescent offenders. Based on this finding, questions are raised about the effectiveness, efficiency and even effectiveness of the Bolsa Família Program in relation to the beneficiaries, such as an improvement in income, a stimulus for children and adolescents to attend schools in the municipal or state public network and prevention and reduction of child mortality at the local level.
