'n Literatuursosiologiese ondersoek na 'n groep Afrikaanse tagtigerprosaskrywers

Heyns, Johan Dirk 06 1900 (has links)
This study attempts to make a contribution to the description of a recent period in Afrikaans Prose History, namely the decade 1980-1989. The term writer of the Eighties is defined and discussed. Nineteen writers have been identified as important Afrikaans Eighties writers with the aid of five canonization mechanisms. These writers and their 51 prosa texts published between 1980-1989 are then investigated by means of Vanheste's four identified attention areas in the sociology of literature, namely the author, the literary work, the literary channel as well as the reader. Questionnairs have been used to investigate the attitude of the trial group with regards to a number of current affairs. Six distinguishing categories have been identified in the texts of the trial group namely politics, realism, border and violence literature, postmodernism, homo-erotics and popular prose. The position of different gate-keepers in the literary channel, together with the influence of censorship on the trial group, the role of the "Afrikaanse Skrywersgilde" and the "little magazines", together with publication opportunities offered to these young writers, have enjoyed attention. J.C.Kannemeyer as historian, together with the critics as readers of the trial group's texts are investigated. The manipulation of a few social realities in Alexander Strachan's 'n Wereld sander grense is investigated in terms of Vanheste's communication model of literary sociology, combined with his (adapted) analysis model. The field of investigation of the sociology of literary covers such a wide field that numerous interesting aspects had to be omitted. Reception studies during the decade of the eighties were not possible and could, unfortunately, only be done five years after the decade of the eighties. The conclusion of this study is that, although not at quite the same level of significance as the term "Sixties", one could still find similarities in the works of Afrikaans writers from the Eighties decade. Cohesion between the social world and the texts of the Vll eighties have evolved from it, especially with regards to thematic and stilistic choices. At the same time, the literary works of this decade have contributed to the social world in which they were published / Afrikaans and Theory of Literature / D. Litt. et Phil. (Afrikaans)

Donaldson på Hellsingska: en komparativ fallstudie : Julia Donaldsons engelska bilderböcker i svensk översättning av Lennart Hellsing / Julia Donaldson as Translated by Lennart Hellsing : a Comparative Case Study of English Picture Books in Swedish

Borking, Ulrika January 2015 (has links)
This master’s thesis looks at the translation of Julia Donaldson’s English picture books into Swedish by the Swedish children’s author Lennart Hellsing. The main aim of the study is to determine whether the translation of the original (source) texts involves the transference of Hellsing’s writing style into the translated (target) texts. Earlier research, carried out by Kåreland (2002), is employed in order to pinpoint Hellsing’s distinctive style as a writer. The style variables apparent in Hellsing’s own writing were thereby identified and these are applied to the analysed target texts in this case study. The theoretical framework is based on descriptive translation studies (DTS) and the use of Toury’s model (1995) for reconstructing translational norms allows the source texts (ST) and target texts (TT) to be put into a sociocultural context. By working within this framework a descriptive analysis is used to describe and compare the ST and TT and the concept of translation as a practice governed by certain translational norms at a certain moment in time and within a certain culture is applied. The findings show that Hellsing’s style as a writer can also be detected in his translations of Donaldson’s picture books. The results of this case study also indicate that the translation of these texts can be considered to be a target culture oriented practice.

Blomqvist, Tünde January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to map and analyse literature written by authors with a Hungarian-language background who moved to Sweden between 1945 and 2015, and who have published literary works in book format. From the perspective of the sociology of literature, this thesis focuses on publishing channels and possibilities, the authors’ and their works places in the literary value system and feed-back in the form of reviews, but also choice of language, theme, and genre. The approach of the research for this thesis is new in Hungarian and Swedish literary studies, as the literary works are analysed irrespective of the language in which they are written. The research corpus consists of both Hungarian and Swedish literary works and one book in English. The second chapter presents the research that Hungarian researchers have conducted on Hungarian migration literature and offers an overview of the questions and results arising from this research. The authors with a Hungarian-language background in Sweden were divided into four groups, based on the time of their migration to Sweden. Four chapters, which comprise the analytic part of the thesis, present and analyse the author groups and their literary activities regarding language, purpose of any code-switching, chosen theme, and genre. The first group consists of authors who migrated to Sweden during the decade after the Second World War (1945–1955). The second group came between 1956 and 1958 in the aftermath of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The third group consists of Hungarians who moved to Sweden during the communist era, between 1959 and 1989. Finally, the fourth group came after the fall of communism (1990–2015). As many as half of the authors chose either Hungarian or Swedish as their language and there are surprisingly few authors working in both languages. The publishing channels depend on the literary works language and theme, and only half of the books have been published at established publishers. The literary works of these authors are categorized as Swedish-Hungarian migration literature. Literary history works until now have neglected these type of literatures, but it is imperative that the study of literature finds a way to acknowledge, include, position, and group them.

Cesare Pavese entre poésie et prose : l'enjeu du rythme, entre éthique et subjectivité / Cesare Pavese, between poetry and prose : the focus on rhythm : ethics and subjectivity

Ventimiglia, Sarah 05 December 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, we offer a reinterpretation of the early literary production of Cesare Pavese, in the 1930s. We do so by placing ourselves in a critical horizon that considers the socio-cultural trajectory of the author and by studying his artistic stances, as well as the distinctive qualities of his work. Our choice consists of three works - Ciau Masino, Lavorare stanca and Il carcere - which are among the less studied, excepted for the second one, of his writings (as opposed to his later works), and allows us to move the critical interest toward the genesis of the style of Pavese. Legitimized by his translations of Anglo-American literature, Pavese possesses already, at this stage, an original and pure «melodic vocation» (Mutterle), characterized by the systematic interdependence between poetry and prose. This research aims to show that the poetic work of Pavese is in a close relationship of interaction and correspondence with his narrative prose, through the construction of a possible rhythmic invariant. Reaching beyond the sterile opposition of poetry/prose goes in favour of establishing a piece of work that would stand fully by the side of the subject who writes and the author who expresses himself, by taking in consideration the rhythm as an unifying element, structuring at the same time the textual shaping, the contents and the ethical value of that work.

« Niche Writers » : Une étude sociologique des niches sociales d’auteurs à New York et à Paris / « Niche Writers » : A sociological study of social writers in New York and Paris niches

Horner, Hervé 19 October 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this research project is to explore the creative process, social learning, motivation, conflicts, rules and norms of three groups of contemporary writers in New York and Paris. Research methods include interviews with authors, the narration of anecdotes about the behavior of the social actors, and the construction of a sociometric table of rules and norms specific to each group according to the theory of Howard BECKER. This project also offers contains a literary analysis using Lucien GOLDMANN’s method of structural study. This research led to the identification of social networks of contemporary authors, in which the exchange of information allows social learning that has both professional and personal value for the social actors in question. Finally, this research will allow the placement of contemporary authors into Pierre BOURDIEU’s map of cultural production, which distinguishes “the sub-field of the avant-garde,” “the sub-field of large-scale production,” and “the field of power” in the literary world.

Kwani ? : an agent of literary renewal in Kenya ? : a first approach to a contemporary literary journal

Journo, Aurelie 14 November 2014 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on Kwani?, a contemporary literary journal started in 2003 in Kenya. Presented by its founders as a platform of expression for a new generation of mainly transnational writers, it stands as a multifaceted object of analysis. A hybrid object integrating a wide variety of texts and an interface between different discursive fields, Kwani? is also the result of a collective endeavour from gathering writers who are part of an ever-fluctuating and transnational sociability network. Assessing such an object requires, therefore, taking an interest in its content and its form, while replacing its creation in its specific context of production, diffusion, and reception, a context which is over-determined by local political, ideological, and socio-economic factors. Analysing the circumstances in which the journal entered the national scene thus allows to uncover the particular workings of this embryonic literary field, which is founded on a certain number of rules that the journal claims to subvert, and which is strongly interlinked with the global literary world. Drawing on recent contributions from the fields of discourse analysis and sociology of literature, we aim to offer an original study of the Kwani? phenomenon identifying the ways in which the journal and its collaborators, in their great diversity, take part in a national and regional literary renewal and thereby initiate a movement towards the reshaping of the global literary world

Ferriere, Tamara 01 December 2012 (has links)
This doctoral thesis studies the extraterritorial nature of Roberto Bolaño’s writing, which is enriched by the nomadic life of the author (having lived in Chile, Mexico and Spain). He represents the image of a writer who has been uprooted an aspect which is reflected in the proportion of the text devoted to his native land. The migrant characters in his writings often seem disconnected from their countries of origin. They wander from one continent to another without knowing where their journey will end. We will see that the author’s experience of exile allows us to identify the links between Bolaño’sliterary works, society and the historical context. The author highlights different events such as military dictatorships and civil wars which occurred in Latin America between 1960 and 1990. He provides a sort of literary judgement on this period. This enables Bolaño to evoke individual and collective memories, recalling painful incidents, which give rise to violent and distressing language. In addition, this study attempts to unveil the avant-garde elements present in his literature. He attempts to go beyond every norm and to oppose himself to the established literary canons. This constitutes an act of defiance whic hallows him to erase the literary boundaries in order to give way to the creation of a new space through his literature.

Bengtsson, Johanna January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to study the construction of literary values. I have been looking at how literature awarded with sponsored literary prizes has been reviewed in four major English and American newspapers. I have been studying the reception of literature by Ian McEwan, Hilary Mantel, Colm Tóibín and Zadie Smith between 2000 and 2012. The prizes in focus are the Man Booker Prize, the Orange prize for fiction and the Costa Awards. There seems to be an increasing number of articles related to each author after they have been awarded a prize, however with little change in the content of the reviews. The non critical articles seems to move towards a more personal angle. I have also found that critics tend to position the authors’ works in comparision to canonised authorships rather than discussing the literature as awarded.

Mezi textem a kontextem. Teorie literárního pole a kulturní materialismus jako modely zprostředkování / Between Text and Context. The Theory of the Literary field and Cultural Materialism as Models of Meditation

Šebek, Josef January 2016 (has links)
Between Text and Context: The Theory of the Literary Field and Cultural Materialism as Models of Mediation Josef Šebek, Mgr. Abstract In his dissertation Between Text and Context: The Theory of the Literary Field and Cultural Materialism as Models of Mediation the author deals with the problem of mediation between literary text and its social context. He focuses on two important contemporary context- oriented approaches to literature: the theory of literary field, developed by Pierre Bourdieu, and cultural materialism, first formulated by Raymond Williams and further elaborated by Alan Sinfield and Jonathan Dollimore. He interprets these two theories as basic, mutually complementary models of mediation: the theory of literary field presupposes the existence of a (semi-)autonomous literary micro-world, whereas cultural materialism stresses the full integration of the literary text into the social context, the "social material process" (Williams). After an introduction outlining the problem, the author concentrates on Bourdieu's theory of the literary field, his "new science of works," and on contemporary post-Bourdieusian approaches (those of Alain Viala, Anna Boschetti, Jacques Dubois, Gisèle Sapiro, Pascale Casanova, Bernard Lahire, Jérôme Meizoz, Geoffroy de Lagasnerie) which employ, develop, and modify...

Freche, Bibiane 28 April 2006 (has links)
