This study attempts to show the religious feeling that permeates the fictional universe of Saul Bellow. To this end, four expressive novels by Bellow were selected for more detailed analysis. This choice enables us to observe different forms of opening for the field of the transcendental, since each of Bellow’s protagonists does this in a particular way, or, more precisely, according to their circumstances, to their experiences, to their thoughts, and also to their intuitions. It happens that these characters invariably undertake a journey in search of self-knowledge. As to the analysis of these texts, it is carried out around two central themes. The first is that of death, or mortality, undoubtedly the most fundamental theme in the literary works of Bellow. The second is that of the spirit, or soul, which is also fundamental and generally linked or subordinated to the theme of death. To substantiate this analysis, we have used bibliographical references of Bellow and comments by literary critics on his writing, which are appropriate resources for this work which attempts to come to grips with the complex and intractable inspiration of Bellow.

Maturação de aguardente de cana composta com extrato de madeira de carvalho em embalagens de polietileno tereftalato (PET) / Brazilian sugar-cane spirit maturation with brazilian sugar-cane spirit oak extract in PET packages

Forlin, Flavio João 05 October 2005 (has links)
Orientador: Roberto Herminio Moretti / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia de Alimentos / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-04T04:17:25Z (GMT). The elaboration of extract through maceration of brazilian sugar-cane spirit (BSCS) with oak wood grinded for brazilian sugar-cane spirit maturation shows advantages of process as well as economic ones, such as rationalization of the utilization, optimization of wood compounds extraction, reduction of the maturation time of the drink, renouncing the utilization of oak wood barrels. The utilization of PET packages shows its viability for storage and/or maturation of distilled beverages in substitution to the traditionally used wood structures for its structural integrity characteristics, selective permeability and innocuousness with the content. It was obtained 13 oak extracts by sequential units macerations using fixed quantity of toasted and not toasted grinded wood with BSCS 50°GL/20°C. Each extract was studied with the dry extract, total phenolic compounds, fixed, volatile and total acidity and colour. The unification of the integral units extracts from the five initial macerations produced the resultant extract for which were obtained the 20, 40, 60mL dosages for BSCS maturation in 0.250, 2, and 20L PET packages and in 4,7L glass packages during 4, 8 and 12 months. This study went along with the maturation of BSCS in 200L oak barrels during 4, 8, 12, 36 and 48 months. The maturation process of BSCS was physical-chemically accompanied by the study of mass losses, real alcoholic level, fixed, volatile and total acidity, total phenolic compounds, colour, superior alcohols (isoamilic, isobutilic, and n-propilic), total esters and aldehydes, in each specific times, included at zero time. An acceptance test also took place involving 81 BSCS consumers through their manifestation concerning the attributes colour, aroma, flavour and global impression using a nonstructured 9cm hedonic scale. The physical-chemical and acceptance tests results were statistically treated with variance analysis and Duncan (p=0.05) and Tukey (p=0.10) tests for average comparisons, respectively. The global impression attribute of the acceptance test was supplementary treated by Multidimensional Preference Analysis (MDPREF) method. The resultant extract obtained of the mixture of the five initial units macerations (totalizing 41 days of maceration) in context of thirteen units macerations (totalizing 346 days of maceration) resulted in 74.5% dry extract, 67.5% total phenolic compounds, 83.9% fixed acidity and 67.7% total acidity extraction. The incorporation of 20, 40, and 60mL of this extract per liter for BSCS maturation were significant effect (p£0.05) on physical-chemical profile of the beverage, associating to it colour and total phenolic compounds, reducing pH, adding volatile and fixed total acidity, the organic composition of superior alcohols, total esters and aldehydes. At 12 months BSCS maturation time in 0.250, 2 and 20L PET packages altered the physical-chemical profile of the beverage, decreasing the total and volatile acidity and total aldehydes and increasing the fixed acidity and total esters. The volume increase in PET packages reflected smaller indexes of mass losses and larger increments of total esters. The BSCS matured in PET and glass packages with the incorporation of oak extract during 12 months showed similar acceptability by consumers, in relation to the BSCS matured in oak barrels, during 12 to 48 months. The incorporation of the 20, 40, and 60mL oak extract dosage per liter for BSCS maturation determined significant increments (p=0.10) of acceptance of the BSCS matured in PET and glass packages independently of maturation time. The colour attribute originated by the distinct dosages of extract was the better acceptance by the consumers, followed by aroma, global impression and flavour / Doutorado / Tecnologia de Alimentos / Doutor em Tecnologia de Alimentos

The Spirit of Sonship in the Johannine Corpus

Newton, Samuel Joseph Roy 02 January 2018 (has links)
The high Christology and unique pneumatology of John’s gospel has often eclipsed the apostle’s teaching on the relationship of the believer to Christ and the Father through the Spirit in Johannine studies. This dissertation seeks to fill this gap by providing an exegetically-focused treatment of sonship in the Johannine corpus that gives special attention to the role of the Spirit in bringing God’s children to participate in the life of the Son and his relationship with the Father. The central thesis is that John, in a manner distinct from Paul’s metaphor of adoption, presents the sonship of believer’s as the result of the Spirit’s work of regeneration out of which flows faith and participation in Christ’s life as Son. At the heart of this study are eight Johannine passages––John 1:12–13; 3:3–8; 14:16–23; 20:17; 1 John 3:1–3, 24; 4:13; and Revelation 21:7––that provide the exegetical lens to view the Spirit of Sonship in John. Although the exegesis of chapter 3 forms the foundation of study, chapter 2 considers the eight Johannine passages through the eyes of John Calvin and John Gill––both instrumental in advancing the theology of the Spirit and providing an exegetical foundation for their theology. Chapter 4 identifies three primary themes––obedience, love, and life––drawn from the eight passages and briefly synthesizes and correlates these themes with other key texts in the Johannine corpus. A brief survey of literature on sonship is reviewed in chapter 1, setting the landscape to which this dissertation seeks to contribute. By focusing on the role of the Spirit the persons of the Father and Son are not diminished, but brought into clearer focus, which is consistent with the Spirit’s ministry to glorify the Son (John 16:14). The Father is the divine initiator, the Son the divine accomplisher, and the Spirit the divine mediator of every spiritual reality that is in and through the Son to the believer. At the center of the Spirit of sonship is the glory of the Son who reveals the glory of the Father in the hearts of the children.

Svenska schamaner: idéer och praktik.

Svensson, Karl January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the essay has been to describe Swedish schamans based on interviews with four informant’s point of view. None of the four informants consider themselves have made an active conscious choice to become a schaman. Schamanism has been perceived as a call as the schamans have a mission that is part of a larger plan to perform. According to the schamans, the contact with the spirits is crucial for a schaman. They have, to a different extent, read and gone courses and in this way have had human teachers, but they define their contact with their spirit assistants as the vehicle to develop schaman knowledge. The natural physician has got knowledge from the Sami tradition and inherited it from the grandfather. The three schamans do not see the spirit world like one-sided good. The schaman's life experiences are used to support and help other people. Two schamans need the person's permission to perform schaman treatments and through that be seen as pure which creates a taboo with limits between internal and external borders where permission is classified as within the limit. Swedish schamans and the Swedish people's nature interests are linked with that the schaman respondent's looks like schamanism and a good schaman society development. The natural doctor's relative- relation to the sejte- stone is a connection to both nature and its Sami value and a symbol that leads to the family's unity.

The development of entrepreneurial intentions and entrepreneurial spirit : a longitudinal study in the case of engineering students in a French Grande Ecole

Wang, Yifan 28 September 2010 (has links)
Il permet d’expliquer la construction de chaque identité professionnelle / Although many researchers point out the emergence of new generations of engineers, the traditional model of the French engineer remains reluctant to entrepreneurship, few engineers are moving towards entrepreneurial careers and they do it rather late in their career. To reverse this trend and train more entrepreneurial engineers, we study educational impact of an engineering Grande Ecole in France. Drawing on the theory of planned behaviour completed by the theory of entrepreneurial career and the notion of entrepreneurial spirit, we use a longitudinal approach to measure the evolution of intention, together with the construction of professional identities and observable behaviours of students during their school years. This study is based on a longitudinal survey completed each year by engineering students and semi-structured interviews with them at the end of the curriculum. The findings include the identification of three engineering professional identities (technical engineer, manager, and entrepreneur) and the definition of the entrepreneurial intention trajectory Leading to entrepreneurial career choice. The impacts of socio-cultural, pedagogical and extra curriculum factors on the trajectory of intention have been modelled. They can explain the building up process of each engineering professional identity

Music education in Malawi : the crisis and the way forward

Chanunkha, Robert Amos 26 September 2005 (has links)
Policy goals stipulated by the Ministry of Education of the post-colonial government of Malawi advocate music education and inclusion of indigenous music in education. In spite of such stipulations, music education is non-practical and the integration of indigenous music in education is unsatisfactory. This thesis attempts to address these issues while focusing on the meaning and purpose of music to Malawians. The thesis begins by tracing the history of music in classroom education in Malawi from 1875 to the present with an attempt to investigate the factors that have contributed to the current crisis in music in schools. This historical-ethnographic study sets out to demonstrate that the ideals and practices of foreign religions as well as Western education denied indigenous music of Malawians a place in classroom education as well as inside and outside the church or the mosque. The thesis strives to portray the consequences of this denial on issues of purpose, outcome, content, methodology and support for music education; trends in indigenous music in ethnic societies; policy goals and statements of music education in the Malawian education; and attitude towards music and music education. Adopting the approaches of both musicology and ethnomusicology, the thesis discusses the role played by indigenous music in ethnic societies and the rationalised views of this music as provided by the musically informed native Malawian practitioners. This discussion further demonstrates how indigenous music structures reflect the social realities of Malawians such as the sharing of resources and theories of life. The thesis argues musical issues that would be the basis for remedying the crisis in music education. A philosophical proposition for modern music education, and the significance of indigenous music in classroom education are argued. An introduction to music education that promotes the use of indigenous music in study and performance is suggested. Sources relied on in the thesis include published and unpublished studies of music and music education; audio/video recordings; and field research undertaken to obtain information about existing indigenous music and their knowledge systems known in Malawian ethnic societies, but not yet covered by existing publications. / Thesis (DMus)--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Music / unrestricted

The experience of insight : an existential-phenomenological study

Freeth, John S 09 October 2010 (has links)
In the last fifteen to twenty years there has been increasing agreement about the phenomenon of insight, but a clear mechanism for insight is not yet understood. The present study examines nine different approaches to the experience of insight: the holistic approach of gestalt psychology; the existential approach of phenomenological psychology; the puzzle-problem approach of cognitive psychology; the creative approach of genius, dreams, design and invention; the representational approach of models; the case-study approach of great minds; the metaphors-of-mind approach; the intersubjective approach of psychotherapy, and the body-mind-spirit continuum approach of spirituality to insight. The distinctive value of this qualitative research lies in the opportunity to interview the research participants to get rich descriptions, not only about their experiences of significant insight and the conditions under which they occurred, but also to investigate the results of their insights. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s insight, in prayer before the Soweto Uprising, resulted in him writing a historic letter of warning to the Prime Minister. Debbie Brown had a series of insights in therapy and while listening to music, about responding to her husband’s long-term infidelity; the results were totally unexpected and expressed in a contemporaneous e-mail. Sir Roger Penrose’s experience of insight was subliminal as he crossed a road and needed to be re-membered later from a lingering feeling of elation; it resulted in a scientific proof about black holes. Tony Grogan’s insights and associations occurred while scanning the news and were expressed in a socio-political cartoon form for the Cape Times newspaper. The particular findings include the necessity for awareness and disposition of openness, the importance of confronting and containing the problematic raw material, and the significance of the moments of ‘impact’ and ‘interpreting’. Insight is seen as crucial to the quality of understanding, transcending the usual or dominant way of seeing things, as key to a self-actualising process and as self-authenticating yet tested in the public realm. At each occurrence of insight understanding develops and action is enabled. The relationship between insight and sight, foresight and humour, is discussed. The qualitative research findings are considered in relation to recent neurobiological research. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Psychology / unrestricted

Queering Christianity: Sexual and Spiritual Identity Navigation in LGBTTQIA+ Folks At Trinity Western University and the Implications for Practitioners of Psychotherapy

Esau, Christie January 2017 (has links)
This thesis considers the lived experiences of LGBTTQIA+ students who currently attend or have attended Trinity Western University (TWU), a private Christian university that requires all staff, students and faculty to sign a community covenant expressing marriage is between a man and a woman. Importantly, TWU is currently seeking to start a law school, which faces great opposition due to TWU’s historical and current exclusion of queer folks. Subsequently, this thesis draws on data gathered from six qualitative interviews with current or past TWU students who also identify as LGBTTQIA+, women and/or gender non binary with the hope of making space for those folks while also offering criticisms and recommendations for TWU to consider. Additionally, this thesis seeks to provide clinical recommendations for counsellors and psychotherapists as they work to support folks at the intersections of spiritual and sexual identity in an affirmative and supportive manner.

Les êtres fantastiques dans les contes et légendes de Théodor Vernaleken : étude comparative / Fantastic creatures in Theodor Vernaleken's tales and legends : Comparative Study

Yanez, Séverine 30 April 2011 (has links)
“Once upon a time”… an austrian professor, Theodor Vernaleken, wanted to spread popular stories and traditional uses from the alpine areas. This “Austrian Grimm” restores them in his books Tales From the Alps for children and home and Legends from the Alps so faithfully that he writes them in dialect form. Highly skilled teacher, he writes lots of explicative notes on his stories making them understandable. A tale is a story, which takes place “a long time ago” “in a far faraway country”. Fantastic creatures appear quite naturally at the right time to allow the heroes to live happy and have lots of children or to prevent it to happen. As for it the legend aims to be believed. In these tales and legends inhabitants or a member of the village community have really seen supernatural creatures in their village. They tell us about their amazement, their fear from the confrontation with this other world populated with daemons. So dwarfs, giants, drakes and other fantastic animals and so on appear, speak and are completely transformed. Humans are also confronting demonologic protagonists such as witches, devils and ghosts. Who transgresses the interdicts cannot escape from his fate. That is the message of these exemplary and instructive stories. Up to now, no exhaustive survey or classification of this literary genre has been carried out. So, this work will analyse demonologic stories in a comparative way through the study of fantastic creatures in texts gathered by Theodor Vernaleken.

Teologia Bíblica do Messianismo à Luz da Crítica Canônica

Silva Júnior, Jário Carlos da 07 October 2016 (has links)

In the SILVA Jr s perspective, the biblical messianism is in order to reveal us a pneumatic eclesiology, and not a mere historicist libertation, a ultimate irreducible element, and not a politic praxis in a revolutionary way, like the social messianisms. In its final shape of the biblical canon, the Old Testament messianism has its roots in the alternative community proposed by Moses and its continuity in the promises made to the David, but it will be the post-exilic community centered in the temple who rediscovers, in the middle the liturgical pilgrimages of intertestamentarial period, an increasing eschatological function of the Israel s remnant as the last place to mystical experience of the pneumatic ecclesiology just fully revealed in the neotestamentary reinterpretation of the messianism applied by beloved disciple community. Just so, SILVA Jr demonstrates the focus of the Jesus messianism as being in the his communion to the Father operated by the Holy Spirit from the Nazareth s sinagoga, and also, he presents as the posterior reinterpretation applied by pauline theology understands the messianism as a most genuine Church s pneumatology, in which the sacramental experience is strictly relationed to the question on the eternal procession of the Holy Spirit, and not just to its historic mission from the Pentecost, in according to the joanine theology and, at the same time, to the orthodox theology in our days.
