What Psychoanalysis learned from Antisemitsm : A Dark Power in Command

Abitbol, Sarah 12 December 2018 (has links)
In this thesis, we aim to present antisemitism as a symptom that can be deciphered using the writings of Freud and Lacan. Its intention is not to apply psychoanalysis to antisemitism, but rather to identify what psychoanalysis has to learn from antisemitism. Two main questions serve to orient this discussion: Why did Jews become an object of a secular hatred? And what are the psychic mechanisms that are at the origin of this kind of hatred? In order to address these questions, it is essential initially to define the significance of being Jewish. According to Freud, the essence of the Jew is to concede nothing, and to compensate for what has been lost. It is this tenacity that provokes an eternal hatred. For Lacan, the Jew is the one who knows how ‘to read between the lines’, and also the one who, through the act of circumcision, represents the Objet a as a remnant (according to Lacan’s Register theory) and binds together the three registers: the symbolic, the imaginary, and the real. Thereby, the Jew produces a division in the field of the Other – and it is this that attracts eternal hatred. There is no hatred without the existence of a superego, and Freud demonstrates how hatred towards the Other redounds upon the self. Lacan, argues that the superego is a form of sacrifice to obscure Gods that results in annihilation of the Other and the self. Lacan also shows that the Universal, the all, causes segregation and rejection of the Other. There is a significant equivalence between Jews and women as they are at one and the same time part of the ‘all’ and outside it; they are therefore not all inside. In the present work, we try to grasp, by employing the Discourse of the Master as developed by Lacan, how antisemitism is assimilated into contemporary discourse and insinuates itself into language. We call upon the logical voice of Jean-Claude Milner, the philosophical voice of Bernard-Henri Levy and the psychoanalytical voice of Gérard Wajcman, to unfold the significance of being a Jew, and to demonstrate how the Jew is the symptom of a lack-of-being of the one who hates.

Hermansson, Johnny January 2009 (has links)
Ulf Lundell is one of the most famous songwriters and authors in Sweden. He has written fifteen works of fiction and they’ve all same theme – a lonely man trying to look into his own past life. They are all built on a character, writing from an I-perspective, having a bit of Lundells own biography in there’s personality.  The aim of his thesis is to find out how Ulf Lundell presents him self in his fictive characters, and will trace the authors development from a psychological point of view. The theoretic starting points are Lacans Freudian concepts “idealego”, “egoideal” and “the superego”, describing the psychological alteration at the author.                    The examination contains an analysis of Lundells novels Jack, En varg söker sin flock and Värmen, and throws light on the relationship between the author and his characters, and how it developes and changes with Lundells literary development. In this consideration are narrative theories a basic factor.   This work will also try to illustrate what has inspired Lundell in creating his fiction figures, and finally how he creates his own lived life on these literary characters.

[en] FROM A LIMITED UNIVERSE TO THE INFINITE SPACES: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LAW AND JOUISSANCE IN PSYCHOANALYSIS / [pt] DE UM UNIVERSO LIMITADO AOS ESPAÇOS INFINITOS: AS RELAÇÕES ENTRE LEI E GOZO NA PSICANÁLISE

PAULA ISSBERNER LEGEY 24 September 2014 (has links)
[en] From a limited universe to the infinite spaces studies the relationship between law and jouissance from a Lacanian perspective. Lacan indicates that the desire is the other side of the law, while, the jouissance is a field that is not limited by the law. Lacan underlines the importance of the Name-of-the-father as a signifier that validates the law. It functions as a mediation, intervening in the imaginary dual relationship represented by the mother and the child. Through this Lacan associated law and desire, indicating that the desire does not exist prior to the law, but is created by it. The term jouissance allows Lacan to indicate a form of satisfaction that does not obey the logic of the desire, which means that it is not structured by the limitation drawn by the law. This dissertation studies the relationship between the desire and the several ways within which the jouissance appears in the Lacanian theory. The feminine jouissance is defined by Lacan as a jouissance that is Other in relation to the organization of the law and the desire. It is a infinite field, which means that it is not limited. This work also studies how the jouissance can be organized when not by the limitation of the law.

Incidência da lei, norma, ideal e superego: fundamentos para um diálogo entre direito e psicanálise / Incidence of law, norm, ideal and superego: basis for a conversation between law and psychoanalysis

On the one hand we find a colonization of psychoanalysis by law, mainly when the later builds on natural law conceptions which make in a broad sense coincident both human nature and the fundamental rights inherent to it. On the other hand, we find a colonization of law by psychoanalysis, which may build on conceptions less strict theoretically but apt to be used in juridical practise whenever it faces aporiae which are not of normative nature, but due to society and its conflicts. I propose to use some base categories, namely, incidence of law, norm, ideal and superego, as means of establishing a promising conversation between the two disciplines, and less subjected to vices and prejudices prevalent with so much persistence in this field. I face the controversy of accomodating the social and the individual, resuming the freudian text so as to find once again the social in the individual, and the individual in the social, casting aside the schematic opposition between the two and searching for the proper mechanisms that permits transition between the one and the other, building on aforementioned categories. Norm, as juridical and general category, serves to accuse the metaphoric nature of the notion of Law as foundation of subjectivity, and replaces the later as recourse, although needed, for the subject to resort to when dealing with the vicissitudes and anguishes of being in the world, allowing for more or less autonomy in face of symptoms and inhibitions. Therefore, there is no correspondence between norms of society and of the subject, since there is not a norm of the subject that isn t internalized from norms obtained in his social context. The process of this internalization, for its part, built upon identification phenomena, implies modes of generational transmission of such norms, by means of which, not as much of their substance is transmitted as is their incidence models themselves, which perpetuate, at the same time yielding to the discontents inherent to culture and enabling significant modifications in normative contents that reign over civilization at each given place and moment / O campo interdisciplinar definido pelas práticas psicanalíticas e jurídicas e suas interações é necessariamente um campo em disputa, levantando problemas e oposições políticas, ideológicas e teóricas.

Interculturality and internal plurality : intergenerational impacts and topical representation of defense mechanisms and coping strategies

Gaultier, Sydney 28 November 2012 (has links)
Research in intercultural clinical psychology describes the psychic and/or the psychopathological changes incurred by the acculturation process. However, the question arises of how different cultures will interact with each other within the psychological space of the individual. Thus, the meeting of cultures does not only occur within the social field, but also within the psychicological space. The intercultural aspects do not simply refer to an outside reality, but more particularly to a subjective experience. Can we produce a representation of this internal plurality? What would be its contribution in understanding the intercultural domain? To answer these questions, we propose a transversal and interdisciplinary approach that strives to understand how the two social "switches" of the individual operates, that is the superego and the habitus. The modeling of a "plural actor" (Lahire, 2001), in the image of socialization matrices and social spaces to which he belongs, will serve a basis from which the internal plurality of cultures will be addressed. The regulatory mechanisms of the psychic (the defense mechanisms and the coping strategies) will be our indicators. Our study focuses on the comparison between non-immigrant and immigrant individuals (N=497), in function of their geographical and cultural origin, and the degree of immigrant descent. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis according to which an intercultural topic should be integrated in the model of a plural actor. This perspective allows us to provide a clear picture of the impact of multiculturalism as internal plurality, but also to generate a dynamic representation of the effects of immigration on related topics.

L'injonction surmoïque chez le criminel non psychotique / Superego injunction in the non-psychotic criminal

Iffli, Sandie 19 November 2016 (has links)
From our clinical experience with prison inmates, our research work proposes a theoretical paradigm of the concept of acting-out in relation with the superego instance. The purpose is thus to bring out the metapsychological stakes and issues of the superego concept as they appear in the clinical approach of the acting-out, and more specifically in relation with the criminal act, while tracing back the conditions of its theoretical elaboration. Even if the foundations that Freud laid is essential to our reflection, the kleinian concepts of primitive superego and of paranoid-schizoid position will be far more precious to us in this endeavour to reflect on the reappearance of certain modes of functioning which are under the supremacy of a particularly cruel and destructive superego. This aspect, which Lacan has reformulated with his view of an imperative superego, will provide the basis for our discourse. While the superego instance is first identified through its function of moral consciousness, as a legislating instance, there also exists a more paradoxical double polarity whereby the reverse side of the Law is expressed through a ferocious and cruel injunction to have enjoyment (“jouissance”). Within this perspective, the criminal acting-out appears like the irrepressible response to the injunction of a strong Superego pushing to commit harsh and virulent actions. This thesis notably insists on the criminal act seen as a last resort. A resort which aims at releasing oneself from the position where one has become the object of the Other's “jouissance”, while one tries, at the same time, to be a subject.

Surmoi et destin du surmoi chez la mère de l'enfant en situation de handicap mental / Superego and superego’s fate of the mentally handicapped child’s mother

Rossi, Giovanni 12 October 2013 (has links)
The clinical experience concerning the mentally handicapped child is a very complex one. The defences that the families, and in particular the mothers, set up in order to cope with the suffering created by the handicap make the transferential relationships really hard to establish. The principal observations highlight clinical facts that appear with a certain frequency in most of the families: the omnipresence of the mother concerning the child’s care and the symbolic father’s disappearance in the family system. The lack of the paternal third-party, who is supposed to symbolize the oedipal metaphor, generates an ambivalent attitude of the mother which leads to a situation where the child becomes an enjoyment object such as the idol for the pervert. Without otherness, without a third-party, dealing with the diagnosis is frequently impossible and leads to a denial of the handicap along with a speech tinged with persecution and rivalry between the different persons being part of the child’s and the mother’s environment. Like the only child who, on the occasion of a baby brother’s birth, can psycho-affectively regress (i.e.: he was house-trained until the baby brother’s was born), the mother, subsequently to the trauma created by the announcement of the diagnosis, would know a psychic regression caused by the collapse of the ideal, collapse which is induced by giving birth to a handicapped child. This thesis intends to demonstrate that these attitudes are, according to us, the result of a mostly superego’s distress. The approach we chose for this work is the superego’s perspective because we believe that there is no clinical experience that better illustrates this notion of criticism, censorship and judgment to decide between normal and pathologic than the one of the handicapped child. We assumed hypothetically that after the announcement of the handicap, the mother, normally pacified by the oedipal paternal superego (the superego as it was conceived by S. Freud), would all of a sudden find herself in a pre-oedipal superego’s position (the superego as it was conceived by J. Lacan and M. Klein). Through a conceptual study of the superego and the interlinking with the feminine, we suggest, by means of this thesis, to connect the clinical experience and the theory. Several clinical case vignettes will support our assumptions and, in fine, we will describe our therapeutic clinical approach which aims at re-introducing the symbolic paternal third-party and help the mother take the reverse course.

A Psychoanalytic Interpretation : Jay Gatsby’s Id, Superego, Ego, and Core Issues / En psykoanalytisk tolkning : Jay Gatsbys id, superego, ego och centrala problem

Miranda O'Shea, Flavia January 2019 (has links)
The present essay attempts a psychoanalytic interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jay Gatsby’s id, superego, ego, and core issues. The first stage of the paper offers an analysis of Gatsby’s id, superego and ego; and finds that the id largely rules his behaviour, with few instances where the ego takes control and manifests the superego. The second stage proposes that three psychoanalytic core issues are identifiable in the character of Gatsby: fear of abandonment, low self-esteem and insecure or unstable sense of self. Through the lens of Psychoanalytic Criticism, the present essay looks at fictional literature in order to gain insight into the human psyche, in hopes of discussing and spreading awareness about mental health.

The quest for a feminist unconscious : the covenant of maternal empowerment in Shelley, Barnes, and Hurston : theses ...

Dunne, Danny T. 01 January 1993 (has links)
I do not purport to give a definitive argument for or against the influences of the unconscious, for the necessary realm of expertise lies within other fields: psychiatry and psychology. However, the application of psychoanalytic literary theory of the unconscious to the lives, words, and characters of selected female authors in order to explore a richer, more meaningful purpose of their art will be the subject of this literary journey. Specifically, the intent will be an analysis of the relation between the manifest content of three classic works of literature to the unconscious intent relative to the author’s biographical perspective, or the psychology of literature.

[en] ONE DEADLY EROTICA: NOISES OF THE SUPEREGO IN THE PSYCOANALYTIC TREATMENT / [pt] UMA ERÓTICA MORTÍFERA: RUÍDOS DO SUPEREU NA CLÍNICA PSICANALÍTICA

MANUELA XAVIER DE OLIVEIRA 07 December 2015 (has links)
[en] One deadly erotica: noises of the superego in the psycoanalytic treatment is a study of the formation of the superego in psychoanalytic theory and its developments in the clinic. The superego, which appears in Freud s work as a product of identification in the decline of the Oedipus complex, admits cruel traits in their partnership with the death drive. Lacan proposes an equivalent object-a with the object-voice, contribution of great novelty for clinical theory. The superego commands levied as a muted voice, inaudible, and propose a challenge to the clinic: to manage the manifestations of this superego, such as guilt, the need for punishment, and negative therapeutic reaction. The paradoxes of the superego are addressed, focusing on the face of the superego that is related to the jouissance, distinguishing it from the Name-of-the-Father - a function harnessed to desire.
