Les représentations sociales de la densité dans l'habitat : vers une faubourisation métropolitaine : "Fabrication, appropriation, territorialisation" / Social representations in housing : into a inner-suburbanisation : “Manufacturing, appropriation, territorialisation”

Viviere, Manon 15 December 2015 (has links)
The density finds itself in the very heart of the concerns of city-actors. It is a technical tool measuring the concentration of housing or populations in a given space. Today, the density sees itself as the symbolic receptacle of a more long-lasting town planning. The density has no good press with the inhabitants, being associated in the collective imagination with deprived neighbourhoods and large housing complexes, which are often off-centered. Density seems indeed responsible for a mental blocking because of its social appropriation, widely looking like rejection. The density seems to produce architectural, urban and social perceptions reminding us of symbolic systems of their own.The density can then be sociologically questioned as a set of social representations which allows the realisation of housing projects. It guides public actions and urban policies and influences the residential choices of the inhabitants. Often described as the crystallization of incomprehension between designers-experts and inhabitants-receivers of a more sustainable housing project-and from now on denser- the thesis develops a more transversal thinking on the density : the crossroads of the architecture as well as town planning and urban sociology. How can the « city-makers » adapt to the values renewed by the density in a time when the search for new urban models for the metropolisation is central? How can the inhabitants adapt to the urban and architectural mutations of the metropolises in view of their residential aspirations but also of their social interpretations of spaces and forms? The density is also a dynamics of the city's production. The densification generates processes of social and urban reorganizations. The latter reveal the originality of the evolution of the territories in metropolitan inner suburbs, sociological and urban phenomenon crosses. This is neither périurbanisation, nor gentrification nor banishment in their strict definitions. The metropolitan governance challenges, the residential strategies and the forms of appropriation of the densification by the inhabitants are reflected in a singular way, revealing a phenomenon which it is possible to call the « inner suburbanisation ».

Bikesharing as an intervention: Does it increase cycling? : A controlled interrupted time series study from Helsinki, Finland

Rego, Padraig January 2019 (has links)
Background Bikesharing is a versatile intervention, that enables cheap and convenient cycling for urban populations, and according to recent literature, has a positive impact on health, safety and the economy. Many of these impacts are based on the assumption of a modal shift induced by bikesharing, i.e. implementing a Bicycle Sharing System (BSS) will increase population cycling. However, the evidence is inconclusive. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the intervention of implementing a BSS increases cycling. The study was conducted using bicycle count data from Helsinki between 2014 to 2018. Methods A controlled interrupted time series design was used in combination with segmented regression as the method. An intervention series and a control series were analysed separately. The slopes (trend) and intercepts (level) of pre-intervention (2014&2015) segments were compared with post-intervention segments (2016-2018). The same analysis was performed in both intervention series and control series. ResultsThe results from the intervention series showed an increase of 105% in the level of the outcome after the implementation of the intervention. Simultaneously, the control series showed that the underlying trend of cycling remained largely unchanged during the whole study period (level increased by 3%). Stratified analysis supported these results in both intervention and control series. Conclusion The analysis of the intervention series revealed, that the level of the outcome increased sharply after the intervention, implying that the intervention had an immediate effect. However, the lack of statistical significance in the analysis of the slopes made it impossible to determine if the effect was sustained.

ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF STORMWATER MANAGEMENT : Case study: Cost-effectiveness evaluation of Proposition O projects

Mahdian, Adrian January 2020 (has links)
Stormwater Management (SWM) or Best management practices (BMPs) treat the stormwater runoff that carries pollutants. Pollutants in the waters and in the stormwater, negatively impact the environment, the ecology, and natural resources. Stormwater Control Measures (SCM) are used in different projects to improve water quality and quantity. This thesis aims to understand the connection between SWMs, the economy, and environmental sustainability. This thesis evaluates the cost-effectiveness of SWMs in Mediterranean climates. The research aims to guide the next project managers to choose better SWMs based on cost-effectiveness, socio-economic, and environmental implications. Various studies suggest that the terms SWM, SWM, and SCM are used interchangeably. The research methodology uses a mix of qualitative and quantitative data analysis The research was conducted in Los Angeles at the request of UCLA. Therefore, it focused on water quality improvement projects in Los Angeles. The costs for the projects, areas, and whatSWMs are used will be acquired through data gathering and personal communication with experts. This thesis compares several projects which include different SWMs. It calculates the cost-effectiveness with two different methods, firstly, the cost per drainage area, and secondly, the cost per pollutant removed. Data is gathered from the city of LA and other secondary data sources to calculate the cost-effectiveness. The calculation results showed that the Glenoaksproject and the Machado lake project were the most cost-effective. Glenoaks utilizes infiltration wells and grass swales, and the Machado lake is a large wetland. Based upon these facts, generally, wetlands and grass swales can be recommended for Mediterranean climates. The expensive total costs of SWMs or their inability to remove pollutants can strongly affect the cost-effectiveness of some projects, and produce a negative impact on the economy. Quantitative assessment of study investigates cost-effectiveness of SWMs and for highlighting its economic impact. For qualitative assessment thematic analysis of 14 sample studies related to stormwater management (SWM) was carried out. Findings reveal that 78% of sample studies reflect the themes associated with the positive economic impact of SWMs. Additionally, the sample studies confirm a 76% positive impact of SWMs on the environment and ecology of the region. Further research with better data and more accurate calculations are needed. It would be beneficial if other factors such as recreation and unquantifiable factors such as the aesthetic improvements and community benefits were incorporated into or considered together with the cost-effectiveness for future projects.

Návrh udržitelné městské struktury 21.století v rámci České republiky / Design of sustainable urban structure of the 21st century in the Czech Republic

Gladiš, Filip January 2020 (has links)
The project focuses on the design of a sustainable urban structure in the southeastern part of an area called Červený kopec, in the land of former brick factory. This urban-planning study endeavors to create a suitable structure for the brick factory brownfield. There are relevant factors which influence the proposal, such as complicated terrain due to the mining history, inconsistency of the surrounding urban structure, improper traffic accessibility, and orientation towards the city centre. The concept is based on the legacy of the area. It builds on the slopes and steep hills and preserves two building of the old factory, which aims to become the centre of the whole area. It is also important to mention the nearby National Landscape Heritage Červený Kopec, which would be connected via a forest-park to the recreational area of Mahenova stráň. The outline of this park creates a soft partition between the city and the park. The whole area is accessible by traffic from three access points, one of which is a newly constructed crossroad with traffic lights connected to the street Jihlavská. This proposal emphasizes the effectivity of the land use, traffic hierarchy, human scale, and the importance of pedestrian movement. The area is characterized by central design, with the ethos of the brick factory. It creates a cultural centre for the whole district and sets the way for new development or restructuralization towards a sustainable future for the city of Brno.

Návrh sídelní struktury soudobého města v historickém kontextu. / Design of settlement structure of contemporary city in historical context.

Skoupilová, Michaela January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis is focused on project of sustainable urban structure in Náměšť nad Oslavou. Specifically, in southeast area of the city between pond Rathan and dam Vícenický žleb. This urban-planning study endeavours to create a suitable structure for city area behind railways. There are relevant factors which influence the proposal, such as connection of the parcel to traffic network of the city and breaking down barrier of the railway. Other factors are slope of the terrain and significant nature and historical character of the city. The concept is based on perception of the city area behind the railway, as separated district of the city which must be connected to current structure. Conception of the area uses historical legacy of path. This path copy axis, which connects castle, statue on main historical square and Cristian cross on forest horizon in designed area. It is important to support natural character and genius loci of the whole city. The urban study emphasizes the effectivity of the land use, traffic connection, scale of the city, permeability of the new designed area, importance of pedestrian’s movement and cancelation of residential monofunction by creating of central public space. Placement of dominants is important due to view of the city.

Propuesta de utilización de pavimento de concreto permeable para reducir el efecto de precipitaciones intensas en las calles de Alfonso Ugarte y Miguel Grau, ubicadas en el departamento de Tumbes / Proposal to use a permeable concrete paving to reduce the effect of intense precipitations in the streets of Alfonso Ugarte and Miguel Grau, located in the department of Tumbes

Aguirre Herrera, Boris Augusto, Anchiraico Giraldo, Melanny Leonor 05 February 2021 (has links)
The El Niño phenomenon causes intense rainfall that accumulates and runs over the surface, transporting significant volumes of water that increase with displacement due to the lack of a permeable pavement, as happens in the city of Tumbes. This deficiency causes damage to the water supply, sewerage, and rainwater systems that, due to the amount of garbage and mud transported by severe silts, affect the hydraulic infrastructures, environment, and quality of life of the population. A proposed solution is to use a sustainable urban drainage system that allows complementing the unique sanitation system designed for sewage, waste, and storm water, existing in most cities. This solution consists of the design of a permeable pavement because it allows reaching a water collection volume of 81-730 l/min/m2 due to the void content of 13 to 25%. This physical characteristic is important to guarantee the infiltration of large volumes of water through its pores and then transmit to underlying strata; reduce heat flow to the conductor; and mitigate the urban heat island in cities. The objective of this research is to evaluate the performance of permeable concrete through 5 mix designs to study the resistance to compression, bending and permeability; the comparison of the surface rain runoff of a permeable concrete pavement with a conventional concrete pavement using SWMM 5.1 software; and the cost comparison. / Tesis

SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLES - AN EXPERIMENT IN LIVING WELL : Northern European examples of sustainable planning

Bratel, Yael January 2012 (has links)
This study examines the concept of sustainable lifestyles. It is concluded that the concept of sustainable lifestyles is derived from the bigger term sustainable development and that the concept sustainable lifestyles exists as an antipode to unsustainable lifestyles. Sustainable lifestyles are still a new concept within the academic field of urban planning and design and some confusion regarding the definition remains. Three case studies were made investigating urban planning for sustainable lifestyles. The sites were Houthaven in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Royal Seaport in Stockholm Sweden and Western Harbour in Malmö, Sweden. Urban planning for sustainable lifestyles was explicitly carried out in the Royal Seaport, in the other two cases the concept of sustainability was approached more generally but nonetheless the methods used were quite similar in all three cases. How people in the society of today are seen as responsible for e.g. buying ecological food, driving ecological vehicles and living a sustainable lifestyle, are analysed through the approaches of governmentality and biopower. There has been a shift from a centralised governing of sustainability implementations to a decentralised one where the individual responsibility stands in focus. There are different views of what a sustainable behaviour and lifestyle could incorporate. According to the technocentric approach, technical solutions to environmental problems are sufficient, but according to the ecocentric approach, behavioural changes are needed in order to obtain sustainability. This has implications for the planning of sustainable lifestyles. In some cases technical solutions are favoured in front of behavioural ones and the other way around. The two tracks of understanding leads to two different pathways of sustainability and a need to recognize and comprehend the differences are crucial in planning for sustainable lifestyles. Sustainable behaviour and habits relate to actions, which e.g. minimizes the use of natural resources or incorporates the switch from an unsustainable habit to a sustainable one. Sustainable behaviour is often referred to as pro-environmental behaviour and circles around consumption. There are several ways of replacing unsustainable habits with sustainable ones discussed in this study. /
email: bratel@kth.se

Exploring cross-sector collaboration for environmentally sustainable urban development: lessons learned from Västra Hamnen and Sege Park in Malmö

Shamsutdinova, Iuliia, Ritter, Tamara January 2023 (has links)
Sustainable urbanization is crucial for the Agenda 2030. The purpose of this study is to provide insights into how organizational structures of public institutions can be optimized for sustainable urban development. This study utilizes an explorative research design. A cross-case analysis had been chosen to investigate cross-sector collaboration for environmentally sustainable urban development by studying two areas in Malmö: Västra Hamnen and Sege Park. Cross-sector Collaboration and Community Governance theories are selected as a foundation of the study. Empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with municipality representatives, residents, representatives of the third organizations, and external experts in sustainable urban development. Thematic coding was used to identify patterns in the interviews, and was followed by the empirical analysis. The present study uncovered key findings related to public governance, sustainability evaluation, cross-sector collaboration and communication in complex sustainable development projects. The findings indicate that balancing stakeholder interests with project’s requirements and embodying the responsibilities of each actor in formal agreements followed by interim follow-ups are vital for successful cross-sector collaboration in sustainable development. Another finding suggests that sustainability should be a central element in a municipality's strategy, as politics and power dynamics play a significant role. In the studied cases the use of climate-friendly materials in construction fell short due to industry lobbying and the lack of national regulations. Finally, the research reveals contradictions between environmental and economic sustainability, as well as environmental and social sustainability. These contradictions, though, are arguably solvable with proper project management and cross-sector communication. Overall, there is room for improvement in recognizing the need for socially just and inclusive development that prioritizes the desires and well-being of the people. These findings shed light on the complex nature of sustainable urban development and emphasize the importance of aligning diverse interests to achieve long-term environmental and social goals.

Ice Cold Urban Planning : A Literature Review on Challenges and Strategies in Designing Sustainable Winter Cities / Iskall stadsplanering : En litteraturöversikt om utmaningar och strategier vid utformning av hållbara vinterstäder

Huerta, Carlos, Axelsson, Catrin January 2023 (has links)
Designing winter cities after the conditions of the winter weather entails unique challenges that require urban planning that is adapted to the specific conditions. One challenge is enabling transportation and accessibility despite heavy snowfall and slippery road surfaces. Understanding these challenges that may arise during the planning and designing of winter cities is crucial for achieving sustainable urban development. As the population increases and climate changes become increasingly unpredictable, winter cities must be planned to optimize land use and create comfortable living spaces. This is essential for preserving important values of nature and cultural values, as well as creating livable environments regardless of the climate. The purpose of this study is to compile and map the challenges of designing winter cities and identify strategies and solutions for sustainable urban planning in cold climates. Through a literature review as a method, a thematization of research and studies in the subject area was compiled and conducted. The thematization resulted in three main themes: Urban design and layout, Operations and maintenance, and Transportation and street space. Thus, the results consist of these themes and associated subheading for each theme. The study shows that winter cities must actively consider multiple aspects, including the need for microclimates, efficient snow clearing, prioritization of soft mobility, and innovative alternatives such as winter trails. Weighing different interests against and considering both practical and aesthetic aspects is crucial in the planning process. The study also highlights the importance of managing conflicts between different modes of transportation and the potential role of winter trails in promoting sustainable mobility. The study suggests exploring alternative solutions for winter trails and how snow management can be made more efficient through further research.
