Former President of a Former Colony : How The Guardian reported on the final events leading to Robert Mugabe’s resignation

During the month of November 2017, the President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe was taken into custody by Zimbabwe’s military. This was a move in order to shift the governmental power after which Mugabe after almost 40 years as President of Zimbabwe resigned from his post.   The thesis contains a Ccritical Ddiscourse Aanalysis of articles published by one of the world’s great newspapers during this shift of power. The newspaper analysed is the British newspaper ‘The Guardian’. The analysis studied which characters and major topics are represented in the articles and how they are represented to see what fits inside The Guardian’s news reporting on the final events in the shift of power in Zimbabwe. In order to find these discursive attributes, pictures linked to the articles were analysed, the context in which the events happened as well as the discourse used in the articles from a perspective of orientalism, post-colonialism and ideology. Other theoretical aspects used are framing, representation and critical Critical Ddiscourse Sstudies.   The empirical case in this research project involves three articles collected from T‘the Guardian ’ reaching from the reporting of Mugabe’s firing of his vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa to the reporting of Robert Mugabe resigning as President of Zimbabwe.   The interest in this study is springing from the normative approach of news media to provide an objective story to the readers while providing the whole picture. With this mission many different challenges come along of orientalist and post-colonial character, as ‘the Guardian’The Guardian is a British newspaper and Zimbabwe being a former British colony.   The results concluded an absence of post-colonial and orientalist representations in the news frames regarding Zimbabwe and its population, the most ideologically charged instances rather revolved around Robert and Grace Mugabe.

Interactivity in online journalism: a case study of the interactive nature of Nigeria's online Guardian

Interactivity is a distinguishing feature of the online environment but online newspapers have been slow in recognising interactivity as an essential condition of effective Web communication. Existing research show online newspapers generally offer few and token interactive options. This research explored interactivity in online journalism using Nigeria's online Guardian as a case study exploring the nature, levels and utilisation of interactivity and interactive features on the site. This study found that few interactive options are offered in Nigeria's online Guardian and those interactive options on offer just produced an illusion of interactivity; it was apparent that little effort was made to give interactive options on the site the significant attention they deserve. The study highlighted the difference between the availability and use of interactive features on an online newspaper site: the mere presence of such features does not necessarily speak to the levels or nature of interactivity on the site. The difficulty in obtaining findings for the qualitative aspect of this study spoke significantly to the findings in light of the fact that these were attempts using interactive options provided by the newspaper site. They stress what relevant literature highlights: the mere presence of interactive features is not in itself interactivity . Factors contributing to the low levels of interactivity in Nigeria's online Guardian include lack of technical expertise plus human and financial resources and the persistence of a mindset that hinders the development and integration of new information communication technologies and interactivity in online journalism. Theoretically, the possibilities are vast but the likelihood of translating theory into reality appears slim. For Nigeria's online Guardian to become interactive in a participatory way, it must undergo changes and choices about values, goals and standards. There must be a shift in attitudes and approaches towards news-content production and delivery as well as the problematic commercial aspects of electronic publishing routines and the effect of such choices on management and newsroom organisation.

Atravessamentos entre a escola e o conselho tutelar: garantia de direitos e práticas de controle / Crossings between school and tutoring assistance: guaranteed rights and control practices

O presente estudo objetiva analisar os atravessamentos na relação entre a escola e o conselho tutelar que é um órgão não jurisdicional criado a partir do Estatuto da Criança e do adolescente com a função de garantir os direitos infanto-juvenis. Entre tais direitos, destaca-se o da educação que acaba por exigir que todas as crianças frequentem à escola e que as famílias sejam punidas caso isto não ocorra. A partir de então, ao cartografar o cotidiano entre estes dois equipamentos e problematizar as suas práticas por um caminho genealógico como propôs Foucault, interessa refletir: por que o direito de frequentar à escola se torna uma imposição? O que ela produz? E o conselho tutelar garante direitos ou é um dispositivo de controle? As respostas a estas questões foram pensadas ao longo deste trabalho, embora não se pretenda aqui fornecer respostas definitivas para tais questionamentos, pois o mais importante é o processo de pensar e refletir que provoca mudanças no objeto de estudo que vai se desenhando durante a pesquisa e no próprio pesquisador. Assim, a escola e Conselho Tutelar atuam muita vezes no controle da população produzindo uma subjetividade que acaba por definir modos de ser, pensar e sentir. Entretanto, a análise das tensões entre estes equipamentos e seus usuários revela a potência destes espaços que podem ser ressignificados por outras lógicas que rompam com a subjetividade capitalística e produzam deslocamentos e outras possibilidades de práticas coletivas que potencializem a vida. / The present study aims to analyze the crossings in the relationship between the school and the child protection agency which is a non-judicial body created from the Children and Adolescents Statute, with the function of guaranteeing the rights of children and adolescents. Among such rights, there is the education which ultimately require all children to attend school and that punishes their families if this does not happen. Since then, mapping the everyday between these two equipments and discuss their practices by a herd path as proposed by Foucault, it is interesting to think over: why the right to attend the school becomes an imposition? What does it produce? And is Tutelary Rights or Warrants a control device? The answers to these questions were thought throughout this work, although it is not intended here to provide definitive answers to such questions, because the most important is the process of thinking and reflecting that causes changes in the object of study that is being drawn during the research and the researcher himself. Thus, the school and the Guardianship Council act very often in control of the population producing a subjectivity that ultimately define ways of being, thinking and feeling. However, the analysis of the tensions between these devices and their users reveals the potency of these spaces that can be reinterpreted by other logics that break with the capitalistic subjectivity and produce displacements and other possibilities of collective practices that enhance life.

A fungibilidade das tutelas de urgências e sua efetividade processual

Nesta dissertação, buscou-se demonstrar que, a despeito de existirem novas técnicas processuais, procurando tornar mais efetiva a prestação da tutela jurisdicional haverá, então, uma necessidade social quanto a se dar celeridade às demandas que se colocam ao judiciário brasileiro. Nesse sentido, observou-se que os princípios se tornam arma potente nas mãos dos julgadores, podendo proporcionar-lhes uma saída processual mais ágil para os casos que são apresentados ao Poder Judiciário. E como os princípios são consagrações de valores de justiça, são fonte do direito e são aplicados pelos magistrados, podem ser perfeitamente usados na resolução da lide, quando da ocorrência das lacunas da lei. Estudou-se, pois, como se aplica a fungibilidade entre as tutelas de urgência e o que isso pode representar para o sistema judiciário pátrio. Trabalhou-se a explicação das tutelas de urgência, fazendo-se ver a necessidade da exposição do debate da questão da substituição da tutela antecipada pela medida cautelar e vice-versa, considerando-se que, apesar disso, este fato último não tem sido bem aceito pela doutrina. Mas se verificou que de acordo com o artigo 273, 7, do Código de Processo Civil, torna-se possível a realização da troca de um pedido de antecipação de tutela feito, de forma irregular, por uma medida cautelar, digamos, incidentalmente, no processo de conhecimento. E chegou-se à conclusão de que negar o efeito da fungibilidade seria, de alguma forma, afrontar o atual direito posto, bem como ao princípio da celeridade e duração razoável do processo / In this dissertation, we sought to demonstrate that, despite the new procedural techniques exist, trying to become more effective by courts there, then, as a social need to give speed to the demands faced by the Brazilian judiciary. In this sense, it was observed that the principles become a potent weapon in the hands of judges and may give them a quicker exit procedure for cases that are presented to the Judiciary. And as a consecration of the principles are the values of justice, are a source of law and are applied by judges, can be perfectly used in the resolution of the dispute, upon the occurrence of gaps in the law. Was studied because, as it applies to fungibility between the urgency protections and what it can mean for the judiciary patriotism. Worked up an explanation of the urgency protections, making the need to see the exhibition of the debate the question of replacement of the injunction restraining and vice versa, considering that despite that, this last fact has not been well accepted by the doctrine. But it appeared that in accordance with Article 273, 7 of the Code of Civil Procedure, it becomes possible to perform the exchange of a request for early relief done irregularly, for a precautionary measure, say, incidentally, the process of knowledge. And he came to the conclusion that denying the effect of commingling would somehow defy the current law stand, and the principle of diligence and reasonable duration of proceedings

Tomando como cenário de atuação o jornalismo internacional em um contexto globalizado e como base os Estudos Culturais Britânicos – que entendem a cultura como meio de vida e campo de embate no qual construções e representações são formadas/modificadas – esta dissertação propõe o estudo das representações do Brasil durante a Copa do Mundo 2014 pelo The Guardian, jornal inglês de prestígio mundial e de grande tradição na cobertura internacional. Utilizando autores como Stuart Hall, Raymond Williams, John B. Thompson e Douglas Kellner para suporte teórico e a Análise de Conteúdo de Laurence Bardin para suporte metodológico, o objetivo é verificar quais as representações do Brasil e dos temas brasileiros que têm mais destaque na mídia internacional (sendo estes 1-aspectos culturais; 2-aspectos políticos; 3-aspectos sociais; 4-impressões sobre a Copa e 5-relação do Brasil e brasileiros com o futebol) em um momento em que os holofotes globais estão voltados para ele, além de confirmar se existe alguma inter-relação entre a visão do jornal sobre a edição 2014 da Copa do Mundo e a imagem que o veículo faz do país. Os resultados mostram que, apesar do uso de repórteres e correspondentes in loco (muitos fugindo propositalmente do foco esportivo) e da abundância de fontes locais de informação, o Brasil se destaca por seus problemas sociais e ainda é um país incompreendido pela sua complexidade política, cultural, econômica e social, levantando, assim, temas binários recorrentes, por exemplo, a desigualdade entre ricos e pobres, a paixão pelo futebol x a insatisfação com a organização da Copa, contrastes entre regiões, ambivalência entre a população calorosa hospitaleira contra torcedores violentos e polícia repressiva, entre outros, reafirmando a diversidade de representações às quais o país é passível. Constatou-se também que a equivalência entre a imagem da Copa do Mundo 2014 e a do Brasil veiculadas no jornal existe, já que características encontradas na representação da primeira condizem com o que se fala sobre o país e seus temas mais destacados. Os dados finais também expõem o potencial do megaevento esportivo de tanto proporcionar novas leituras sobre o país-sede quanto ofuscá-las devido ao envolvimento da mídia com a festa mundial do futebol. / As an European colonized land, Brazil has had since its birth not only its image, but also its own identity sense influenced and built by foreign narratives, starting with the colonizers, going through travelers and reaching today with all the forms of international journalism. Besides its connection to Brazil for the country’s historical relationship with soccer, the World Cup, in turn, because of the media mega-event features has the potential (and intention) to leave as legacy some projections on its host nation representations. Taking for action scenario the international journalism in a globalized context and as base the British Cultural Studies – that understand culture as way of life and a battlefield on which framing and representations are made/changed – this project intends to study the Brazil representations constructed during the 2014 World Cup by The Guardian, English newspaper of global prestige and with big tradition in international coverage. Using authors such as Stuart Hall, Raymond Williams, John B. Thompson and Douglas Kellner for theoretical support and Laurence Bardin’s Content Analysis for methodological support, the purpose is verify what are the representations of Brazil and of the most highlighted Brazilian themes in international media (being them 1-cultural aspects, 2-political aspects, 3-social aspects, 4-impressions about the Cup and 5-relation between Brazil and Brazilians with soccer) while global spotlights are turn to the country, besides to confirm if there is any correlation between the newspaper view about the 2014 edition of the World Cup and the Brazil image sold by it. The results shows that, even with the use of in locus reporters and correspondents (many distancing themselves intentionally of the sports focus) and the abundance of local information sources, Brazil gets attention for its social problems and is still an uncomprehend country for its political, cultural, economic and social complexity, raising recurrent binary themes. For example: inequality between rich and poor, passion for soccer x dissatisfaction with the World Cup organization, differences among the country’s regions, ambivalence between the warm and welcome population against the violent crowd and repressive police, among others, reassuring its diversity of representations. It is also found that there is an equivalency between the World Cup 2014 image and Brazil’s conveyed on the newspaper, by the means the observed features on the representation of the tournament match with what was written about the country and its most highlighted aspects. The final data also exposes the potential of the megaevent in both afford new lectures about its host nation or overshadow them because of the media participation at the worldwide soccer feast.

[pt] O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar os acontecimentos transcorridos nos postos indígenas do estado de Minas Gerais – o Posto Indígena Guido Marlière (PIGM) e o Posto Indígena Mariano de Oliveira (PIMO) – durante a ditadura civil-militar, sobretudo entre os anos de 1967 e 1973, período no qual a Ajudância Minas-Bahia (AJMB), responsável pela administração desses postos, ficou sob o comando da Polícia Militar de Minas Gerais (PMMG). Nesse período, foi construído um reformatório para índios considerados delinquentes transferidos de várias regiões do país para o território demarcado ao povo indígena Krenak; foi formada uma tropa militarizada de policiais-indígenas conhecida como Guarda Rural Indígena (GRIN); e, finalmente, foi realizada a transferência forçada dos Krenak e dos confinados no reformatório para uma propriedade da PMMG chamada Fazenda Guarani. Esses acontecimentos atingiram diretamente a cultura política Krenak, levando o Ministério Público Federal (MPF) a pleitear uma inédita anistia política coletiva em prol do povo indígena Krenak junto ao Ministério da Justiça no ano de 2015. Essa dissertação procura descrever esses processos à luz de um conjunto de documentos colhidos em pesquisas no acervo do Museu do Índio e do Centro de Referência Indígena do portal Armazém Memória, sobretudo aqueles que permitem conhecer o funcionamento do órgão tutelar (primeiro o Serviço de Proteção ao Índio – SPI – e posteriormente a Fundação Nacional do Índio – FUNAI) naquela região, onde ocorriam frequentes conflitos fundiários. / [en] This text aims to analyse the main facts which happened at Indigenous posts of Minas Gerais State- The Indigenous Post Guido Marliere (PIGM) and the Indigenous Post Mariano de Oliveira (PIMO)- during the civil-military dictatorship, mainly between 1967 and 1973, time in which the Ajudância Minas-Bahia (AJMB), responsible for administrating the mentioned posts, was under Military Police of Minas Gerais State s control (PMMG). During this time one reformatory was built for said offenders indians be transferred from several regions of the Country to the defined territory of Krenak indians. A militarised troop was organised with police Indians known as Rural Indigenous Guard (GRIN). All the Krenaks and the ones confined in the reformatory were forced to move to a PMMG s property know as Guarani Farm. These facts directly hit Krenak s political culture, leading the Ministério Público Federal (MPF) pleading an unique collective political amnesty to benefit the Krenak indigenous people. This litigation was submitted to Minister of Justice in 2015. This text describes all these processes under the lights of researched documents stored at Indian s Museum and Indigenous Centre of Reference collections both part of Armazem Memoria portal, mainly the ones which allow knowing how tutelary institutions such as initially SPI (Serviço de Proteção ao Índio) and later FNI (Fundação Nacional do Índio) worked in that region, where several conflicts over land had happened.

Vårdnadshavares inflytande : En kvantitativ studie om vårdnadshavares åsikter kring inflytande i förskolan / Parental influence : A quantitative study on the guardian's views on the influence of the preschool

Syftet med studien är att få en insyn i hur vårdnadshavare upplever sin möjlighet till inflytande i den pedagogiska verksamheten i förskolan. Den förskole pedagogiska kunskap studien kan bidra till är ökad förståelse hos förskollärare om vårdnadshavares åsikter och uppfattning om sitt inflytande i förskolan. I sin tur kan studien bidra till en ökad förståelse om hur samarbetet mellan hem och förskola fungerar. De forskningsfrågor studien utgår från är; Är vårdnadshavare nöjda med det inflytande de har, känner vårdnadshavare att de har inflytande i förskolans verksamhet samt har vårdnadshavare kunskap om sitt inflytande i förskolan. Metoden som användes för insamlande av data var en internetenkät som skickades ut via en Facebookgrupp, frågorna var riktade till vårdnadshavare med barn i förskolan. Svaren sammanställdes i ett antal diagram, utifrån diagrammen bearbetades svaren i förhållande till den forskning och litteratur som vi tagit del av, för att i sin tur delas in i ett antal teman. Resultatet av de bearbetade svaren visade att en viss del av vårdnadshavare är nöjda med det inflytande de anser sig ha idag. Att beakta är dock att det är en stor procentsats som önskar sig mer inflytande i förskolans verksamhet. Resultatet visar också att det är främst vid den dagliga kontakten och under föräldramöten som vårdnadshavare anser att de kan framföra sina åsikter.

BACKGROUND: The childhood vaccination program is voluntary. For effectiveness, caregivers need to relate to the attitudes of those who are in doubt about vaccination. A trustful relationship with the school nurse may be decisive for the custodian. Custodians who have declined vaccination experience the information as biased. With lifeworld theory, the school nurse can view the patient as more than a biological object. OBJECTIVE: Describing the school nurse's experience of meeting custodians reluctant to vaccinate their children. METHOD: Inductive content analysis was used to analyze eleven mail-interviews with school nurses. RESULTS: Three categories were identified: A friendly but definite message to vaccinate, Acts or lets the case be, Emotional meetings. The results show that school nurses take a variety of measures when custodians doubt vaccination. Medical and religious reasons are accepted. Custodians base their arguments on unscientific sources. Encounters with custodians are emotional. A calm, matter-of-fact and professional response is fruitful in communication. CONCLUSION: School nurses should use arguments in accordance with the custodians lifeworld. There are no action plans or scientific evidence for which interventions are successful. Research is needed on how freedom of choice is communicated and perceived by custodians and what methods are effective. / BAKGRUND: I Sverige är barnvaccinationsprogrammet frivilligt. För effektivitet måste vårdgivare förhålla sig till attityder hos de som är tveksamma till vaccination. En förtroendefull relation med skolsköterskan kan vara avgörande för vårdnadshavarens beslut. Vårdnadshavare som avböjt vaccination upplever informationen som partisk. Skolsköterskan kan genom livsvärldsteorin se människan mer än som ett biologiskt objekt. SYFTE: Att beskriva skolsköterskors erfarenheter av att möta vårdnadshavare som är tveksamma till att vaccinera sina barn enligt det svenska vaccinationsprogrammet. METOD: Elva mejlintervjuer med skolsköterskor analyserades utifrån kvalitativ innehållsanalys med induktiv ansats. RESULTAT: Tre huvudkategorier identifierades: Vänligt men bestämt budskap att vaccinera, Agerar eller låter vara, Känslosamma möten. Resultatet visar att skolsköterskor vidtar en mängd åtgärder när vårdnadshavare är tveksamma till vaccination. Medicinska och religiösa skäl godtas utan argumentation. Vårdnadshavare grundar sina argument på ovetenskapliga källor. Möten med vårdnadshavare väcker känslor. Ett lugnt, sakligt, objektivt och professionellt bemötande är fruktsamt i kommunikationen. SLUTSATS: Skolsköterskor bör använda metoder och argument som når fram till vårdnadshavaren och bejakar familjens livsvärld. Det saknas utarbetade handlingsplaner och vetenskapligt underlag för vilka interventioner som är framgångsrika för att möta tveksamma föräldrar. Fortsatt forskning kring hur valfriheten kommuniceras och uppfattas av vårdnadshavare samt vilka metoder som är framgångsrika behövs.

Climate Change Communication during COP21 in Paris: The Momentum for Change framed by the Guardian

The study of climate change communication has become a vital research field. It has evolved into being an essential translator between the scientific community and the public. The Conference of the Parties (COP) met in December 2015 to discuss the basis of a 54-page document on how the world will proceed with the challenges of climate change in the future. Throughout the conference the media was an important tool in spreading opinions and information about the on-going negotiations. This study analyzes how the COP21 was framed by the British newspaper the Guardian. Therefore, the empirical material consists of online newspaper articles from the period of the conference. A qualitative research approach was used to identify four frames and formulate themes. The findings mirror the central discussion points from the past 20 years of climate change negotiations: mitigation, adaptation, leadership, scientific proof of climate change and the urgency of change. In addition, the study identifies the politics of climate policy.
