An investigation of images of women : the development of an awareness campaign to boost self-esteem amongst South African women

Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree Master of Technology: Graphic Design, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2014. / The aim of this study was to investigate how images of women in the media that espouse women’s empowerment can indeed have the opposite effect and may even contribute to lowered self-esteem in women. To this end, this project is intended to explore issues such as body image and image manufacture in order to find a possible answer to the question of what is ‘real beauty’ in the South African context. A semiotic approach seeking to review the ways in which women are seen through visual communicative images was undertaken. This visual research revealed the importance of the ‘gendered gaze’ at the centre of issues that relate to self-esteem. An in-depth analysis of the literature, pertaining to self-esteem, interrogated the works of Naomi Wolf, John Berger and Susie Orbach, amongst others. This was carried out in order to understand more about how the dictates of consumerism pervade the work of the style industries. These sectors are well supported by the diet, food and cosmetic surgery industries who tend to effectively increase and add to a sense of body related insecurities. In addition, content analysis of selected South African editions of Cosmopolitan magazine was conducted. The images described represents a significant development period in the emergence of certain beauty ideals in South Africa. The British Unilever marketing campaign, The Dove Campaign For Real Beauty, was used as a base model for the applied design component of this study. In addition an action research approach was employed through a series of interviews and questionnaires directed at mostly female participants in South Africa. This method revealed that self-esteem issues have far reaching implications, affecting women of all ages. As a response to the perceived need for a South African based campaign, this research project informed the development of The Sisterhood Self-Esteem Crusade. In contrast to The Dove Campaign For Real Beauty which was created to promote increased sales of beauty products, The Sisterhood Self-Esteem Crusade’s focus is to interrogate and raise awareness of self-esteem. Underpinning this was an attempt to build confidence, cascade new ways of understanding and to propagate sense making, informed through action research, amongst South African women.

Body is used to be a message carrier, we change our appearances to express the valufe that we believe and shape our identification also. While we are familiar with the traits that constitute the "ideal female body" as defined by modern society, we often overlook the fact that "absence of body hair" is also an important trait as such. The women's decision of whether to keep or remove body hair has always had political implications. It is of strategic importance in the process of "being female". This thesis focus on motive、 intention and experience of laser hair removal of Taiwan’s working girls. Explore how does the subject make sense about the norm of hair removal and the relationship between feminine identification and strategy of comprehension.

En ce qui concerne la littérature féministe, il s’y trouve un chevauchement important et intéressant entre le manifesto en tant que forme littéraire et la fiction utopique. Les deux se servent d’une image imaginée de l'avenir ou d'un meilleur état futur pour critiquer et dénoncer tant les conditions actuelles que celles du passée qui ont donné naissance à celles-là. Cette thèse aborde à la fois le manifesto et la fiction utopique / dystopique pour élaborer les conditions de l’espace essentiel des femmes et du féminin. Ce lieu utopique se veut plus qu'un endroit où aller ; il exprime les origines du féminin, lesquelles vont au-delà de ce qui est masculin en visant un épanouissement du féminin en dehors et au-delà de la stricte dichotomie masculin-féminin de la société patriarcale. J'examine d'abord les termes en usage puis je discute du manifesto comme une forme littéraire d'un intérêt particulier pour les écrivains féministes. Je passe ensuite en revue des théories de fiction utopique, lesquelles me conduisent à des possibilités fructueuses du langage pour assurer une voix aux femmes ainsi que l’expression du féminin. Je prends comme exemple le livre The Activist de Renée Gladman pour appuyer mes arguments concernant le pouvoir performatif du manifesto comme une forme qui s’empiète sur la fiction utopique dans le but d'imaginer l'espace du féminin. Dans la deuxième partie de la thèse, j’entre dans une utopie fictive dans le cadre d'une exploration personnelle de ce qu’est le féminin et son expression. Le récit emmène le lecteur au pays de Cwenaland. A chaque étape de la narration d’autres voix percent et découpent le texte. Certaines sont sous la forme d'une image ou d'un portrait, d'autres sont des cris ou des gémissements qui dérangent la voix narrative. Ces voix en tangente et en diagonale enracinent mon utopie fictive dans la diversité d'expérience et d'expression féminine. / There is considerable and interesting overlap between the manifesto as a literary art form and utopian fiction in regards to feminist writing. Both use an imagined image of the future or of a better future condition in order to criticize and denounce conditions in the present, and the past that gave rise to them. The thesis looks at both the manifesto and writings about utopia/dystopia in order to frame a place for female and the feminine. This utopian place is more than a place to go. It is a place that expresses what femininity is based on - more than simply that which is not masculine - and offers some kind of fulfillment outside and beyond the rigid masculine-feminine dichotomy of patriarchal society. I first examine terminology then I discuss the manifesto as a literary form of particular interest to women writers. I then review notions of utopian fiction, which leads me to the important opportunities that language offers to women to have a voice, and to express that which is feminine. I examine closely Renée Gladman’s book The Activist to support my arguments regarding the performative power of the manifesto as a form that overlaps with utopian fiction in imagining space for the feminine. In Part Two I imagine and describe a fictional utopia as part of a personal exploration of how to identify that which is expressive of the feminine. The narrative takes readers on a journey to Cwenaland. At each stage in the narrative other voices pierce and slice the prose. Some are in the form of an image or a portrait; others disrupt the narrative voice like a shout or a wail. These voices that are tangential and diagonal to the narrative ground my fictional utopia in the many levels of feminine experience and expression.

This study has been conducted as a literary analysis of four chapter books for children in the early years of compulsory school: Magister Tutnäsa, Vilken fullträff, Astrakan, Sune och tjejhatarligan, and Alva och Dum-Julia. The aim has been to analyse four teacher characters from a gender perspective. The study has focused on the teachers’ personal characteristics and whether these are typically female or male. Another aim has been to study how the character reinforces or runs against stereotyped gender patterns. Stephens’s and Andræ’s matrices of femininity and masculinity in literature have been used. The result shows that all the teachers in the analysed books are portrayed in a nuanced way. The characters display examples of both gender stereotypes and gender-transgressing characteristics. Stereotyped gender patterns are something that school is supposed to counteract. This can be done by working with literature. For this reason, another aim has been to show how teachers can purposefully use literature in the school’s work for gender equality.

Stratégies intermédiales et autoreprésentation dans l'oeuvre littéraire et les dessins-partitions d'Unica Zürn

Par son recours à diverses formes d’expression, Unica Zürn (1916-1970) redynamise l’espace de la feuille en le faisant activement participer à l’écriture de soi. Le « je » semble en effet se démultiplier grâce à des jeux « anagrammatiques » sur les divers signes mobilisés, qu’ils soient alphabétiques, picturaux ou musicaux. L’autoreprésentation s’inscrit alors au sein d’une œuvre pluridisciplinaire inusitée, qui renouvelle l’esthétique quelque peu « essoufflée » du mouvement surréaliste. Cette attitude vis-à-vis de la feuille, où plusieurs signes « décomposables » et « recomposables » se partagent l’espace, est observable tant dans l’œuvre littéraire que picturale d’Unica Zürn. Le processus de création par la lettre, le trait et la note de musique, tend à revaloriser le support matériel utilisé par l’effacement des frontières entre les disciplines artistiques, qui appelle un regard distancié du lecteur/spectateur sur l’œuvre. Afin d’interpréter les travaux de Zürn dans la pluralité des moyens artistiques qui y sont déployés, l’approche intermédiale sera favorisée. Dans le premier chapitre de ce mémoire, il s’agira d’abord de voir comment s’articule un certain dialogue entre le discours des chercheurs de l’intermédialité et l’œuvre d’Unica Zürn. Le rapport à l’objet sera notre porte d’entrée dans la matière intermédiale. Par un retour à la matérialité de l’expérience médiatique, nous constaterons que Zürn met à l’avant-scène les instruments et supports de la création, ce qui mène à une représentation distorsionnée de soi, de l’espace et du temps. Une fois le parallèle établi entre les concepts de l’intermédialité et les travaux de Zürn, nous nous concentrerons sur le pan musical de l’œuvre pluridisciplinaire de l’auteure-artiste. Le second chapitre traitera de l’intrusion du sonore dans l’univers textuel, qui se fera notamment par la réappropriation de l’opéra Norma, de Vincenzo Bellini. Cette réécriture s’intitule Les jeux à deux et prend une distance considérable par rapport au texte originel. Elle s’accompagne de dessins effectués par l’auteure-artiste à même les partitions de l’opéra. Le regard multiple posé sur l’œuvre zürnienne permettra de comprendre que l’écriture palimpseste participe du processus d’autoreprésentation, tout en élaborant un discours sur la rencontre entre littérature, dessin et musique, ainsi que sur l’influence de cette juxtaposition sur le débordement des frontières médiatiques traditionnelles. / Having recourse to many forms of expression, Unica Zürn (1916-1970) revitalizes the space of the sheet by having it take an active part in the individual writing. The “I” seems to increase thanks to “anagrammatic” games on the many mobilized signs, whether they are alphabetical, pictorial or musical. The self-representation is inspired by an unusual multidisciplinary work, which renews the aesthetics, somewhat “worn”, of the surrealist movement. This attitude towards the sheet, where many “decomposable” and “recomposable” signs share the space, is observable in Unica Zürn’s literary work as well as in her pictorial work. The process of creation through the letter, the stroke and the musical note tends to reassert the value of the material support used by the abolition of the boundaries among the artistic disciplines, which calls for a distanced look from the reader/spectator on the work. In order to interpret Zürn’s work in the plurality of the artistic means that are deployed, the intermedial approach will be favoured. In the first chapter of this dissertation, we will see how a certain dialog is structured between the views of the intermediality’s researchers and Unica Zürn’s work. The relation to objects will be our entry point in the intermedial subject. Through a return to the materiality of the media-related experience, we will notice that Zürn puts at the forefront the instruments and the supports to the creation, which leads to a contorted representation of oneself, space and time. Once the parallel established between the intermediality’s concepts and Zürn’s work, we will focus on the musical aspect of the author-artist’s multidisciplinary work. The second chapter will deal with the intrusion of sound in the textual universe, which will occur through the reappropriation of the Vincenzo Bellini’s opera “Norma”. This revising is called “Les jeux à deux” and is significantly different from the original text, and is paired with drawings made by the author-artist directly on the opera’s partitions. The multiple look placed upon the zurnian work will allow to understand that the palimpsest writing takes part in the self-representation process, through elaborating a view regarding the interrelation of literature, drawing and music, as well as the influence of this juxtaposition on the overflow of the traditional media boundaries.

The Relationship of Exercise Duration to Disordered Eating, Physical Self-Esteem, and Beliefs About Attractiveness

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between exercise duration and level of disordered eating, physical self-esteem, and endorsement of societal mores about attractiveness. Two hundred twenty-nine female college students completed the Bulimia-Test Revised, the Physical Self Perception Profile, the Beliefs About Attractiveness Questionnaire, and a demographic questionnaire. Subjects were classified into one of four levels of exercise duration based on the number of hours they reported engaging in planned exercise per week. Significant differences were identified among the four exercise groups in relation to physical self-esteem. The amount of exercise activity individuals engaged in per week, however, was not indicative of their eating disorder symptomatology or beliefs about attractiveness.

Le roman, Les Violettes rouges, met en scène une jeune femme cherchant vengeance à l'époque de la conquête de l'Ouest américain. Il joue sur les codes du western, tout en les transgressant, puisque le héros cow-boy et vengeur est une femme, Lou. Plus libre encore que les héros du western traditionnel, Lou s'approprie des éléments du « masculin » et du « féminin » pour incarner un corps puissant et sensuel qui sera vecteur de violence. Les systèmes hiérarchiques et injustes érigés par l'homme blanc se voient ébranlés par les actes de révolte de Lou. L'essai L'échec du système des genres dans La Maladie de la mort de Marguerite Duras explore, par le biais de la pensée de certains théoriciens féministes et par l'entremise de certaines questions sur les identités sexuées selon la catégorie d'analyse du gender, l'impossible rencontre entre l'homme et la femme du récit de Duras. L'échec du système double et duel entre le masculin et le féminin est exprimé, entre autres, par un système de voiles et de voilements, de regards aveugles, par un féminin fuyant et, ultimement, par un renversement des pouvoirs. Ici, la conception double des genres se voit remise en cause puisqu'elle rend stérile toute rencontre entre l'homme et la femme du récit et ultimement, entre le masculin et le féminin. / The creative writing project titled Les Violettes rouges depicts a young woman seeking vengeance in the nineteenth-century American West. It is a novel that replays and transgresses the codes of the western genre, as its vengeful cowboy protagonist is actually a woman named Lou. Freer than the archetypal western heroes, Lou takes what she desires in what is said to be “masculine” and “feminine”. Through her physique she embodies a powerful and sensual vector of violence. Lou’s acts of rebellion shake the white man’s hierarchical and unjust systems. Through theories of various feminist thinkers and questions of sexual and gender identity, the essay titled L'échec du système des genres dans La Maladie de la mort de Marguerite Duras explores the impossible encounter between the male and femal protagonists in Duras’s novel. The failure of the system both dual and double separating man and woman is expressed through a series of veils and veilings, of blindspots, through a fugitive feminine and, ultimately, through a power reversal. Here, the double and hierarchical definition of gender is questioned since it renders any meeting between the novel’s male and female characters, as well as between the “masculine” and the “feminine”, sterile.

L’Art a toujours consacré une grande part à l’image du féminin. Que cela soit dans l’iconographie gréco-romaine ou judéo-chrétienne, ses multiples représentations sont synonymes de confusion et d’ambivalence. La femme et l’image ont en commun de susciter méfiance et fascination. C’est au travers de l’étude approfondie de quelques figures clefs de l’histoire de l’art, que nous vous proposons une relecture post-féministe des diverses facettes du féminin, prises dans la dyade sacré/profane. Mythes et croyances donnèrent naissance à un métissage pagano-chrétien qui fit émerger un Eternel Féminin inébranlable encore très prégnant dans l’art actuel. Tantôt dans la foi de l’image, tantôt dans sa condamnation, ainsi se résume l’insoluble combat entre l’humain et le divin. La Femme restera à jamais l’élément trouble associé au paraître et à la beauté. Dans nos recherches nous avons constaté que la femme et la peinture sont en parfaite adéquation. Elles sont indissociables car iconoclasme et misogynie vont souvent de pair. Peu à peu, le corps remplacera la toile et le fard, la peinture pour les artistes transgenres. Dans d’étranges (queer) parodies entre exhibition et chamanisme, ils réinventeront leur devenir-féminin. La surface de l’œuvre devient alors le miroir où se reflète cet Autre, alter ego tant recherché. La pensée féministe se met en marche au travers des révolutions des genres et des sexes. Ainsi, c’est entre Pygmalion et Narcisse que les artistes des XXéme et XXIéme siècles, nous offrent, entre mascarade et mélancolie, la vision d’un idéal sans original. Enfin, nous revenons sur l’art des femmes. Leurs pratiques sont souvent borderline, partagées entre violence, humour et Charis dans leur quête d’un sacré hors religion. Elles offrent un devenir-pandorien de l’art pour briser à jamais le désormais trop célèbre : « Sois belle et tais toi! » / A large percentage of art has always been devoted to the images of the feminine. In Greco-Roman as well as in Judeo-Christian iconography, these multiple representations are synonymous with confusion and ambivalence. The common link between woman and her image is the ability to arouse distrust and fascination. By means of an in-depth study of some key figures from the history of art, we hereby put forward a post-feminist review of the diverse facets of the feminine, viewed under the sacred/secular dyad. Myths and faiths gave rise to a pagan-Christian hybrid, bringing forth a constant “Eternal Feminine” that is still firmly rooted in contemporary art. It is sometimes the faith of the image, sometimes its condemnation, that encapsulates the unresolvable fight between the human and the divine. Woman will remain forever the obscure element that is associated with appearance and beauty. In the course of our research, we ascertained that woman and painting are in perfect harmony; they are inseparable because iconoclasm and misogyny often go hand in hand. Step by step, the body will replaces the canvas and the make-up, the painting of transgender artists. In queer parodies between exhibition and shamanism, they reinvent their transformation into the feminine. The surface of the work becomes a mirror that reflects this Other, the alter ego, so longed for. Feminist thinking is set in motion through the revolutions of genders. Artists of the 20th and 21st centuries offer us a vision of an ideal without an original, a new Pygmalion or Narcissus, somewhere between masquerade and melancholy. Finally, we return to the art of the women. Divided between violence, humour and charis, their methods are often borderline, in their quest for the sacred that is beyond religion. They offer to evolve into “pandorien” art to shatter for ever the henceforth overly famous idea: «be beautiful and remain silent! »
