This qualitative study describes teens' perceptions about AD/HD and medications. Roy's Adaptation Model's four modes of adaptation were the framework for this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 high school teens aged 14-17 with parent reported AD/HD. Findings of inductive analysis for modes: Physiologic (Medication), Medications are a hassle but they work; Role function, I do better in school when I take the meds; Interdependence, With meds things are better with my family and friends don't know I am any different; and Self-concept/group identity, I'm just an everyday teenager, pretty much. The composite main theme was: Meds help me. School nurses can use this knowledge to guide interventions for families and teens with AD/HD, healthcare providers, school teachers and staff, and communities in a multidisciplinary effort toward an adaptive educational experience compatible for teens.

SOCIAL SUPPORT AND MENTAL HEALTH AMONG PAKISTANI WOMEN EXPOSED TO INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCESärnholm, Josefin, Lidgren Sebghati, Nathalie January 2010 (has links)
Abstract Intimate partner violence (IPV) is highly prevalent in Pakistan. Social support is associated with a reduced risk for violence and adverse mental health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between social support and the occurrence of IPV and adverse mental health among Pakistani women exposed to IPV, along with exploring help-seeking behaviour using qualitative interviews. Data from a cross-sectional survey of 759 women, aged 25–60, were analyzed using logistic regression. The results demonstrated that informal social support was associated with fewer occurrences of all forms of IPV and less likelihood of adverse mental health when exposed to psychological violence, whereas formal social support was associated with more occurrences of all forms of IPV and more likelihood of adverse mental health when exposed to psychological violence. The qualitative result showed that fear of social stigma and low autonomy were, among others, obstacles for seeking help. Šiuolaikinėje visuomenėje vaikų ir paauglių netinkamas elgesys turi palankiausią ekonominę, socialinę, teisinę, kultūrinę terpę progresuoti. Viena iš pagrindinių emocinių ir elgesio sutrikimų – vaikų agresija.
Neretai mokykloje susidaro sąlygos reikštis agresyviai elgsenai. Todėl jau pačioje problemos užuomazgoje labai svarbu pradėti darbą su elgesio problemų turinčiais vaikais. Užkirsti kelią šiam procesui ar jį pašalinti galima taikant efektyvius darbo metodus. Pagalbą pedagogams teikia dirbantys socialiniai pedagogai.
Tyrimo problema: Kaip pedagogai supranta agresyviai elgtis linkusius paauglius ir galima jų elgsenos kaita ugdymo procese.
Tyrimo objektas: Pedagogų požiūrio ypatumai į agresyvios elgsenos paauglius ir elgsenos kaitos galimybės pedagoginiame procese.
Tyrimo hipotezė: Remiantis subjektyviu pedagogų agresyviai linkusių elgtis vaikų vertinimu darbe, galima efektyviai spręsti elgsenos kaitos problemas.
Tyrime dalyvavo 40 Tauragės rajono pedagogų. Magistro darbe naudoti dviejų tipų metodai:
Kiekybiniu metodu, stengtąsi pažvelgti į problemą. Tikslas: Pedagogo požiūrio į vaikų, turinčių elgesio sutrikimų situacijos analizė. Tyrimo duomenys apdoroti SPSS programine įranga, aprašomosios statistikos būdu. Tyrimo rezultatai atskleidė faktą, kad:

Smurto atvejai mokyklose, mokinių patyčios, šiurkštus elgesys – tai dažnos šių laikų problemos, su kuriomis susiduria visuomenė. Smurtiniai atvejai, susiję su vaikų dalyvavimu smurtiniuose veiksmuose, yra tapę kasdienybe. Lietuvos dienraščiuose beveik kasdien galime išvysti publikacijų apie smurtą prieš vaikus ir tarp vaikų. Dažnai iškyla klausimas, kas turėtų rūpintis šiomis problemomis. Kadangi smurtas yra sudėtingas socialinis reiškinys, jam spręsti turi būti pasitelkiamos įvairios priemonės- socialinės, psichologinės ir kt. Be abejo, siekiant sumažinti smurto paplitimą, į šį procesą turėtų aktyviai įsitraukti ir mokykla. Mokyklai priskiriama ne tik akademinė funkcija, bet ir vaikų socialinių kompetencijų ugdymas.
Vaiko teisių apsaugos kontrolierė R. Šalaševičiūtė 2006-03–10 LR Seime surengtoje spaudos konferencijoje informavo žurnalistus, kad maždaug apie 10% mokyklinio amžiaus vaikų linkę nusižengti ir nusikalsti, tačiau valstybės institucijos į grėsmingą nepilname��ių nusikalstamumo statistiką nekreipia reikiamo dėmesio. Violence is a serious social phenomenon, that is why to solve it social, phychologiacal and other kind of helping methods should be used. The role of school should also be active in order to minimize the spread of violence. According to Republic of Lithuania Education and Science minister’s decree from the year 2004, each school should have special violence prevention groups. One of the functions of these groups is to prevent the violence. These groups solve the questions of the preventive work and provide a necessary help to pupils, parents and teachers. Darbo tikslas – ištirti psichosocialinių paslaugų organizavimą slaugos ligoninėje paliatyvių ligonių artimiesiems.
Darbo uždaviniai: 1. Ištirti paliatyvių ligonių artimųjų esamų psichosocialinių paslaugų poreikį. 2. Įvertinti psichosocialinių paslaugų poreikio tenkinimą. 3. Išsiaiškinti naujų psichosocialinių paslaugų poreikį.
Tyrimo metodika: Tyrimo objektas – psichosocialinių paslaugų organizavimas slaugos ligoninėje paliatyvių ligonių artimiesiems. Tyrimo metodas – anoniminė paliatyvių ligonių artimųjų (n=67) anketinė apklausa. Duomenų analizė atlikta naudojant statistinės duomenų analizės SPSS 13.0 for Windows versiją ir Microsoft Exel programą.
Rezultatai. Didžiajai daliai tiriamųjų sąveikos su sveikatos priežiūros darbuotojais (88,4 proc.), ligoniui teikiamos priežiūros ir procedūrų kokybės (89,1 proc.), informacijos ir pagalbos (81,2 proc.) bei psichologinės paramos (68,0 proc.) poreikiai yra svarbūs.
Lyčių ir slaugymo patirtį turinčių/neturinčių tiriamųjų poreikių svarba skyrėsi: sąveikos su sveikatos priežiūros darbuotojais ir psichologinės paramos poreikis svarbesnis moterims ir artimąjį slaugiusiems asmenims, o ligoniui teikiamos priežiūros ir procedūrų bei informacijos ir pagalbos poreikis svarbesnis moterims ir artimojo neslaugiusiesiems.
Tiriamųjų poreikiai patenkinami nevienodai. Sąveikos su sveikatos priežiūros darbuotojais poreikis patenkinamas (49,7 proc.), tačiau labiau užtikrinamas moterims ir slaugymo patirtį turintiesiems. Objectives: 1. To determine the demand for existing psychosocial services for the relatives of palliative care patients. 2. To evaluate supply of this demand. 3. To establish the demand for new psychosocial services.
Material and methods. The study object – management of psychosocial services for the relatives of palliative care patients at nursing hospital. The survey implied the anonymous questionnaire (n=67) for the relatives of palliative care patients. Statistical data analysis was performed using statistical package „ SPSS 13.0 for Windows“ and „Microsoft Excel“ software.
Results. The majority of responders pointed out, that the needs to interact with health care staff (88.4%), to receive high quality of health care and procedures (89.1%), information and aid (81.2%), and psychological support (68.0%) all are relevant.
The analysis of demands' perception regarding to gender and prior experience of care (experienced subjects and non-experienced subjects) demonstrated following differences: relevance of interaction with health care staff and of psychological support was higher for women and experienced subjects, while the quality of care and procedures as well as information and aid were more relevant for women and non-experienced subjects.

Cosmo Girls, Cheetah Boys and Creatures Unlike Any Other: Relationship Advice and Social Change in North AmericaKnudson, Sarah 20 March 2014 (has links)
Over the past fifty years, numerous cultural and structural changes have profoundly altered how heterosexual women and men in North America envision and live out their intimate lives. As key social structures where individuals typically sought guidance about their relationships have lost cultural potency, and insecurities about social and economic structures have grown, people have turned increasingly to alternative sources of advice, of which self-help books are a readily available option. In three interrelated studies, this dissertation considers one of North America’s most popular and lucrative book genres—relationship advice—and its readers. On a textual level, it examines connections between ideological shifts in advice and macro-level changes; with regard to audiences, it asks what generates particular modes of self-help reading. All studies then consider the implications of ideological shifts and modes of reading for the creation or maintenance of social boundaries and attendant inequalities.
While prior theoretical and empirical work on relationship advice products and audiences has considered time-limited samples of women’s texts, and research in reception studies has emphasized the importance of gender in generating modes of reading, this dissertation contributes new insight by looking longitudinally at bestselling advice books, offering the first detailed look at books for men, and considering the influence of variables beyond gender in channeling readers toward particular modes of reading. Findings demonstrate strong coupling between ideological trends in advice and broader social changes, and an interlocking effect of readers’ biographical, demographic and psychological factors on modes of reading. Analyses of texts and readers also reveal how the genre reinforces social inequalities. Paper 1 corrects presumptions about advice book content by identifying new ideological trends, Paper 2 develops a conceptual and theoretical vocabulary for understanding constructions of ideal masculinity, namely through identification of a process of “masculinizing” intimacy, and Paper 3 newly identifies two modes of reading—targeted and habitual—and generates theoretical insight broadly applicable to reception studies.

The impact of support groups on the psychological state of athletes experiencing concussions /Horton, Amanda S. January 2002 (has links)
In recent years there has been considerable interest and research examining psychological distress resulting from athletic injuries, as well as coping strategies for an enhanced recovery. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological effects of sport related concussions and to determine if participation in support groups can reduce these psychological side effects. Participants included concussed male and female varsity or comparable elite level athletes who were placed in either a control or an experimental group. All subjects completed the Profile of Mood States and the Post Concussion Rating Scale. Participants in the experimental group received three support group intervention sessions, while those in the control group received no intervention. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. It was revealed that participants in the experimental group improved their mood state. In addition to the impact of support groups on concussed athletes, factors influencing their moods were also identified including the concussion history of the athletes, the stage of rehabilitation, gender, and number of concussion symptoms.
