Indian Travellers’ Adoption of Airbnb PlatformTamilmani, Kuttimani, Rana, Nripendra P., Nunkoo, R., Raghavan, V., Dwivedi, Y.K. 28 August 2020 (has links)
Yes / Much of the existing scholarly debate on sharing economy to date has focused on the use of technology in developed countries. However, the recent upsurge of mobile technology adoption in developing countries has provided suitable breeding ground for sharing economy. The lack of native theories in tourism and hospitality sector with scare utilization of unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) provide necessity for this research. This study adapted meta-UTAUT model as theoretical lens and extended the model with hedonic motivation, trust, and self-efficacy. Based on data from 301 potential Indian consumers, the results underscored the central role of attitude that significantly mediated the effects of effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions on consumer intention to use Airbnb. Meanwhile, performance expectancy emerged as significant direct determinant of intention alongside attitude, trust, and self-efficacy. The proposed model explained as much as 65% variance on Indian consumer’s intention to use Airbnb.

Unveiling Financial Performance as a Mediator in Vacation Rentals' Valuation: Evidence from the Central Florida MarketMedeiros, Marcos 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation innovatively extends the hedonic value model by crafting a comprehensive and novel econometric framework to analyze the mediating role of financial performance in the valuation of vacation rental properties. The study not only conducts an empirical analysis of the fundamental hedonic determinants of vacation rentals’ performance and value but also examines the influence of vacation rental performance on their valuation by leveraging the capitalization rate theory, a prevalent metric for evaluating commercial real estate value, to ascertain its applicability in forecasting the worth of vacation rentals. The core contribution of this study is the discovery of how short-term rentals are assessed in Central Florida, the key factors contributing to their performance and value, and whether the current valuation methods are suited to the current market needs. The methodology is grounded in robust panel data analysis, encompassing annual performance metrics from the Central Florida market between 2014 and 2023. This approach integrates short-term rentals' extended property-level information and monthly performance databases from AirDNA with the comprehensive real estate database offered by Stellar-MLS, which includes property listing history, market sales, and property details available exclusively to licensed realtors in Central Florida. To integrate these two datasets, a location-based tool was developed using Python and Google API resources to match property addresses and calculate the total distance and driving time to main attractions in the area. Results confirmed the influence of performance on vacation rental valuation and the mediation effect of performance on the relationship between property attributes and value. The findings revealed that the valuation of vacation rentals in Central Florida is better suited to commercial-oriented real estate assessments rather than traditional residential appraisals. These transformative insights provide a robust econometric tool for better predicting the value and performance of vacation rentals, benefiting a range of stakeholders, including vacation rental owners, investors, and policymakers.

Airbnb is everything a hotel isn’t : En kvalitativ studie om resenärers motivation till logi tillhandahållen av AirbnbMelissa, Pierre, Maija, Kongo January 2015 (has links)
It is today more common to rent accommodation through alternative accomodation distributors such as Airbnb. Airbnb is an online community that distributes accommodation for travelers through their website allowing individuals to rent their own housing. The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that motivate travelers to choose accommodations through Airbnb, by conducting a number of qualitative interviews. The interviews focuses on the respondents' own stories which are being analyzed. Intimate tourism, human motivation and P2P traveling are some of the theories that are used in this paper. In the analysis of the empirical material, a number of motivational factors are identified that explain why travelers have chosen to rent accommodation through Airbnb over other lodging options. The primary motivation factor is identified as cultural, as the respondents feel that they through Airbnb get the opportunity to experience new cultures and acquiring new cultural knowledge. Social factors such as reviews and grading systems, as well as economic factors such as price also plays into the choice of accommodation distributor.

”Connect and share” – Den delningsbara destinationen : En intervjustudie som belyser Airbnb och vilka funktioner plattformen har för en destinations utveckling / ”Connect and share” – The sharable destination : A study highlighting Airbnb and its features for a destinations developmentJohansson, Frida, Eliason, Sofia January 2018 (has links)
The sharing economy is a phenomenon that has grown and increased in the tourism industry, for example by companies like Airbnb. This new economy operates outside the traditional market and can therefore not be considered as contributing to the society in the same way that companies in the traditional market does. Although Airbnb are competing with hostels, campsites and hotels that are in the traditional market. This means that it makes it difficult for companies and organizations in the tourism industry to know how to relate to the phenomenon and to see what kinds of effects it has left behind. The study has therefore focused on highlighting Airbnb within a special destination and to find what kinds of functions it has for Karlstads tourism development. Furthermore, this was performed by highlighting Airbnb's hosts to understand what kind of view they have on Airbnb, their guests, Karlstad and thus understand what kind of role they have towards the destination. In relation to the hosts, we placed the Karlstads Tourism Organizations in focus to establish what kind of knowledge and attitude that does exist today relating to the sharing economics, digitization and Airbnb. The themes chosen to be highlighted and which also permeate the entire study are (I) Sharing Economics, (II) Destination Development, and (III) Airbnb and the hosts. These themes are permeate from the background to the conclusion to illustrate these phenomenon from a different perspective in relation to our study. The study’s approach was therefore based on interviews with representatives from Visit Värmland, the tourism organization in Karlstad and five Airbnb hosts in Karlstad. To illustrate the relationship between these actors, a social constructivist positioning was used as a starting point. This positioning enabled new knowledge of the actors relationships and potential exchanges that could be considered beneficial from a societal perspective

How cultural values influence participation in Sharing Economy platforms : A systematic literature review of the potential expansion of Airbnb in Thailand / Hur kulturella värden påverkar deltagandet i Sharing Economy plattformar : En systematisk litteraturstudie av Airbnbs potentiella expansion i ThailandRutegård, Regina January 2024 (has links)
The Sharing Economy (SE) and its platforms has been on the uprise since the 2008’s Great Recession. Although previous researchers have found that culture influences consumers' willingness to adapt new innovations and technologies, very few studies on SE and collaborative consumption focus on how cultural values can play a role. Additionally, most studies on SE do not include Asian countries, event hough they contributed to 57% of the global GDP growth between the years 2015 and 2021. Thailand has one of the highest GDP in Southeast Asia, where the tourism sector comprises a large portion. In 2022, Thailand was Airbnb’s most visited country in the region, yet no study has been conducted on how the country’s cultural values influence SE participation and the potential expansion of Airbnb. As domestic tourism in the country is also big, Thai nationals’ answers from the 7th wave of World Value Survey, were used to establish where the country is situated on Hofstede’s scales. Thailand was deemed to be closer to having a Large Power Distance, High Uncertainty Avoidance, Collectivism, Femininity, Short-term Orientation, and Restraint. After the cultural values had been established, a systematic literature review was performed to identify previous studies done on how cultural values, as defined by Hofstede’s model, influence SE participation and adaptation. The results from the sestudies were then applied to Thailand, to establish how Thailand’s cultural values would influence Airbnb’s expansion in the country. Thailand’s Collectivism and Femininity were found to be to Airbnb’s benefit. However, the Large Power Distance, High Uncertainty Avoidance, and Restraint, were to Airbnb’s disadvantage. For the dimension Long-term vs Short-term Orientation, it was difficult to draw any clear conclusions as the studies did not agree on its influence.

Unknown Date (has links)
Recently, due to the advanced internet technology and the trend of sharing economy, more and more company has changed their usual business model, from the traditional manufacturing to the service of gathering demands and supplies. Selling the tangible products and equipment is no longer the main source of profit. More and more sharing platform companies have appeared in the market and the business has transformed its business model by degrees.
Although there are more and more sharing platform companies emerge in the market, very few company can maintain the growth. This study takes the largest global house-renting platform, Airbnb, and the corresponding platform, Airizu, for comparison. And use the 4C framework to identify the transaction costs that the sharing platform companies and the bilateral party faced and further discover the different strategies used by the two cases.
Finally, this study provides the sharing platform companies some recommending strategy of future development. For those startups in the very beginning stage, if the platform companies go for the strategy that Airizu took, by throwing in capitals to copy the entire business model from others, it will undertake huge financial risks, and on the other hand, if the platform companies go for the strategy that Airbnb took, by solving the transaction costs step by step in the long term, it will have better chance to get a 4C positive cycle. To not only raise the number of users from the bilateral parties to reach the network effect, but also help the company to achieve great success within limited resources.

Ahmed, Aland, Ayanle Omar, Ifrah January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to study trust between Airbnb hosts and users. The complexity of the sharing economy lies in the fact that it lacks formal contracts and laws that support the private individuals included in an agreement. This type of economy is not in complete absence of laws. But laws that usually apply outside the sharing economy are not supported in this type of organizational form. Then the problem arises, when trust must be created between each other, since there are no laws to lean on disputes, fraud etc. not only that the sharing economy is characterized by uncertainty, the booking takes place digitally, which contributes with even greater uncertainty. The actors are forced to find ways to create security in the form of trust. The authors of the study have therefore investigated how Airbnbs' hosts and users create trust between each other. The study was based on a qualitative research method in the form of twelve semi-structured telephone interviews. The study's theoretical frame of reference consisted of previous research on the sharing economy, trust in the sharing economy and peer-to-peer asset sharing. The result was that respondents using the feedback system consisting of reviews and reviews and the person's profile create an idea of the person and then get their own impression when they have a conversation with the person. Communication, feedback system and profile are thus the three ways that give an impression that further shapes and creates trust between users and hosts on Airbnb.

The phenomenon of renting out your own home is a trend that has been spread worldwide. From a spatial behavior, human territory has opened in society by making the power over its geographical area accessible to people which the landlord does not need to have any relation to. A business site, based on the sharing economy, which has gained ground today, is Airbnb. This study aims to map out experiences and opinions of the sharing economy and Airbnb from two perspectives, central social actors and the population. A mix of qualitative and quantitative research is made. The study shows that there are differences in experiences and opinions, which have consequences for the population, such as precarious regulations and income declaration. Our research also shows that there is a change in social behavior through the sharing economy, which at best can become a creative development for the population who want to be part of the sharing economy.

Battle of the Beds: The Economic Impact of Airbnb on the Hotel Industry in Chicago and San FranciscoGoree, Katherine 01 January 2016 (has links)
The sharing economy is the private redistribution of goods via peer-to-peer sharing. Since internet use has saturated the U.S., the sharing economy has become widely internet-based. Airbnb, a website and app that facilitates the short-term rental of space to stay in another person’s home, has become a major component of the sharing economy.
This study includes an empirical analysis of the hotel occupancy rates in two major markets, San Francisco and Chicago, and how they have or have not changed, from the 2008 launch of Airbnb through the end of 2014. The study hypothesizes that Airbnb has had a statistically significant negative impact on the hotel occupancy rate. The results serve as empirical evidence that Airbnb’s introduction has had an insignificant impact on San Francisco hotel occupancy rates, but may have had a marginally significant negative impact on Chicago hotel occupancy rates. Major reasons why most travelers have not substituted Airbnb for hotel accommodations include the fact that nearly half of those traveling in the United States are traveling for work, Airbnb’s lack of amenities that many business travelers demand, and the absence of an Airbnb loyalty program that is similar to what many hotels have.
