The address form usted as an ethnic speech marker : Its correlations with some factors of the ecological triad in context of ethnic groups in contact

Sarmiento, Miguel Angel January 2006 (has links)
This study aims at exploring the social, affective and cognitive variables that would be related to the use of the address form usted in Chilean Spanish. Specifically, we refer to the use that can be observed in interactions between Chileans residing in Sweden. A particular aspect of this situation is that, while the majority group almost exclusively use the form that is commonly associated with solidarity (in this case the Swedish pronoun du), the minority group referred to maintains the pronoun that normally is associated with power, distance, formality and politeness: usted. In other words, while the equivalent in Swedish of usted (ni) is seldom used in majority language, the opposite is observed in the minority language object of study. We believe that the motives for the use of usted in this minority context are more complex than they appear to be. Consequently, an alternative hypothesis has been worked out with reference to theories within the area of Social Psychology. On this basis the following main hypothesis was formulated: Individuals representing the minority group in ethnic contact situations tend to increase their identification with the minority group in order to be admitted by and adhere to this group, if they feel that they are rejected by the majority group. The form usted is not the result of a fortuitous situation, nor can it be explained by the fact that it is the normal usage in the native country, but that it fulfils a strategic objective: to mark the affiliation with the minority group. The method has consisted in grouping together and correlating factors pertaining to the environment, the agent and the guest according to the Ecological Triad, the interaction of which contributes to the appearance of the observed behaviour that underlies this study. The statistical analysis enabled us to verify what was put forward in the hypothesis.

Quelques contributions à l'estimation des modèles définis par des équations estimantes conditionnelles / Some contributions to the statistical inference in models defined by conditional estimating equations

Li, Weiyu 15 July 2015 (has links)
In this dissertation we study statistical models defined by condition estimating equations. Many statistical models could be stated under this form (mean regression, quantile regression, transformation models, instrumental variable models, etc.). We consider models with finite dimensional unknown parameter, as well as semiparametric models involving an additional infinite dimensional parameter. In the latter case, we focus on single-index models that realize an appealing compromise between parametric specifications, simple and leading to accurate estimates, but too restrictive and likely misspecified, and the nonparametric approaches, flexible but suffering from the curse of dimensionality. In particular, we study the single-index models in the presence of random censoring. The guiding line of our study is a U-statistics which allows to estimate the unknown parameters in a wide spectrum of models.

A comparison of the performance of three multivariate methods in investigating the effects of province and power usage on the amounts of five power modes in South Africa

Kanyama, Busanga Jerome 06 1900 (has links)
Researchers perform multivariate techniques MANOVA, discriminant analysis and factor analysis. The most common applications in social science are to identify and test the effects from the analysis. The use of this multivariate technique is uncommon in investigating the effects of power usage and Province in South Africa on the amounts of the five power modes. This dissertation discusses this issue, the methodology and practical problems of the three multivariate techniques. The author examines the applications of each technique in social public research and comparisons are made between the three multivariate techniques. This dissertation concludes with a discussion of both the concepts of the present multivariate techniques and the results found on the use of the three multivariate techniques in the energy household consumption. The author recommends focusing on the hypotheses of the study or typical questions surrounding of each technique to guide the researcher in choosing the appropriate analysis in the social research, as each technique has some strengths and limitations. / Statistics / M. The human nature of Christ, fallen or unfallen?: a comparative analysis of the Christologies of Pannenberg and Hatdzidakis with reference to the Seventh-day Adventist Church debate

Chuumpu, Keith January 2020 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 118-124 / Did Christ, in the incarnation, take a fallen or unfallen human nature? This question, in its various forms, has occupied the Christian Church for as long as it has existed. For the Seventh-day Adventist church, to which tradition I belong, the question centres on whether Christ as a human being had sinful tendencies or not. This question has divided the church into two main camps, with one camp saying he did, and the other saying he did not. And the debate goes on. It is from the Seventh-day Adventist church tradition that I picked up on this debate, following it up to mainstream Christianity and motivating this research. My research seeks to identify the causes of the debate. Its premise is that unless the specific causes of the debate are clearly identified and appropriately addressed, it is difficult, if not impossible, to conclude it. For a close analysis, two scholars, each representing one side, are picked and examined: Pannenberg, representing the fallen nature position, and Hatzidakis, representing the unfallen nature position. Their respective arguments are gleaned, compared and analysed; and their differences, causes and possible solutions are pointed out. The findings are then applied to the Seventh-day Adventist church debate and to Christianity at large. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Systematic Theology)

[en] A PRIORI ESTIMATES WITH APPLICATION TO MEAN-FIELD GAMES / [pt] ESTIMATIVAS A PRIORI E JOGOS DE CAMPO MÉDIO

JOAO VITOR MEDEIROS DOMINGOS 28 January 2021 (has links)
[en] The mean-field games framework was developed to study problems with an infinite number of rational players in competition, which could be applied in many problems. The formalized study of these problems has begun, in the mathematical community by Lasry and Lions, and beside them, but independently close to the same time in the engineering community by P. Caines, Minyi Huang, and Roland Malhamé. Since these seminal contributions, the research in mean-field games has grown exponentially, and in this work we present a regularity to a case of mean-field games using particulars techniques. In this work, we study time-dependent mean-field games in the subquadratic case, that is, mean-field games, which are written as a system of a Hamilton–Jacobi equation and a transport or Fokker–Planck equation, where The Hamiltonian presented on the Hamilton–Jacobi equation has a subquadratic growth. We begin by assuming ten assumptions, and then, under these assumptions derive Lipschitz regularity of the system.

Zechel, Gero 21 February 2017 (has links) (PDF)

Schenck, Catherina Johanna 11 1900 (has links)
Community development and in particular participatory development is about people. This means that the person who studies or practices participatory development or any other of the participatory pratices should have a particular way of thinking about people. The main aim motivating this study was to investigate the paradigm/s about people on which participatory practices are based. This included a literature research on five participatory practices namely participatory development; participatory communication; participatory learning; participatory research; and participatory management. A guideline for paradigm analysis was developed by using Schriver's (1995) and Capra's (1996) descriptions of a paradigm as well as ideas of hermeneutics. From the paradigm analysis on the participatory practices two themes emerged: A shift from modernism to post modernism in the thinking processes and participatory practices. From the participatory practices the same concepts repeatedly emerged indicating a similar paradigm for all the participatory practices. Three post modern theories were therefore applied to enhance the description of the different concepts. The end result of this study is the development of an evolving paradigm for participatory practices in order to give enhanced meaning to concepts in the participatory vocabulary. Finally a critical reflection was done on the post modern research process. / Text in Afrikaans / Social Work / D.Phil. (Social Work)

Fauxtopia

Kampf, Raymond William 01 January 2004 (has links)
To all who come to this fictitious place:Welcome.Fauxtopia is your land. Here, age relives distorted memories of the past, and here, youth may savor the challenge of trying to understand the present. Fauxtopia is made up of the ideals, the dreams and the fuzzy facts which have re-created reality... with the hope that it will be a source of edutainment for all the world.Ray KampfFauxtopia DedicationApril 1st, 2004
