"Du vet bäst, bestäm du" Hur vårdlärare uppfattar sin överordningSallnäs, Jenny January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how teachers in health and care subjects perceive their superior position in relation to their students and how their attitudes affect their work. One of the issues is how teachers’ previous training affects their attitudes to their superior position. The study has a general qualitative approach. Data acquisition has been done through explorative interviews with four teachers in health and care subjects, all employed by the same private training college for adults. The empirical data is analyzed by using Foucault´s power analysis. The results of the investigation show that the respondents perceive that they are working to develop a democratic type of teaching, in which students are expected to take an active part and where relations between teachers and students should be characterized as egalitarian. This is difficult to achieve, particularly in interaction with students whom the teachers perceive as weak. These students tend to require an authoritarian teacher, which does not correspond to the teachers’ desire to be seen as instructors and mentors.

Familjehemsutredningar : Socialtjänstens arbete med privata aktörerBoberg, Gunilla, Filipsson, Annah January 2009 (has links)
This essay deals with the social services cooperation with the private sector relating to foster care. The aim was to examine whether and what the causes may be that the social service transfer tasks of authority to private actors. Furthermore, we have examined and discussed if such a working procedure can lead to consequences for the individual child and how / if the children's legal security is affected. Survey methodology is qualitative in nature where we conducted semi-structured interviews with three persons who work in different ways to be involved in work with a foster family. We have also made use of questionnaires sent to social workers around the country. The result has been interpreted on the basis inter alia, legal texts, legislative history, and two theories which have their origin in organization theory. Our results show that some municipalities do not feel that they have the resources to investigate the family. Furthermore, it appears that the cooperation of the social services have with the private sectors has declined, perhaps because of clearer legislation of 2008, or because of the sharp criticism that they received from the provincial government. Our study also shows that some municipalities still leaves management tasks to the private sector, without legal basis. Since there is no control over who is inquiring the family a result of this can be that a child is growing up in unsuitable environments, which in itself can affect the rule of law.

De ensamkommande barnens utsatthet : En studie om de vuxnas ansvar för de ensamkommande barnen i kommun X / The unaccompanied children´s exposed position : An assay about the adult´s responsibility for the unaccompanied children in the local community XSchagerberg, Therese, Ortfeldt, Linda January 2009 (has links)
Nyckelord: ensamkommande barn, kommunens ansvar, god man, asylprocess / Abstract The unaccompanied children who come to Sweden are in an exposed position. After the first of July 2006 the responsibility for the children's housing and caring lays on the local authority after agreement with immigration authorities. The unaccompanied child gets an allocated good man, which gets the responsibility for the children in the parents' absence. One of the good men's responsibilities is to represent the child in the asylum process. Earlier research that elucidates how the reception can looks like in a local authority where difficult to find. How the adult who works with these children experience their situation, where also difficult to find. Today, there are principally reports from non-profit organizations, for example: "save the children" in Sweden. During the autumn 2008 interviews were done with a responsible official in local authority X, housing personnel on PUT- living for unaccompanied children, and good men. To be able to get an understanding for how the children's situation can look like in a local authority and how the responsibility is distributed between concerned parties. On the basis of the interviews, it showed clear directives and rules were missing between the different authorities, which can lead to an unstructured life for the unaccompanied children. Furthermore, no formal requirements or other specific education is necessary in order to become a good man and there by make a commitment to get custody for the unaccompanied children. This puts the children in another exposed situation, since the good men have been allocated the responsibility to pay attention to the children's rights, economy, and legal aspects. Keywords: unaccompanied children, the local authority, good man, asylum process

Negotiation of Identities by International Teaching Assistants through the Use of Humor in University ClassroomsKozlova, Iryna 15 July 2008 (has links)
Research on international teaching assistants (ITAs) often highlights that ITAs have at least two identities, an identity of a teacher and a student (e.g., Jenkins, 2000). Since American classrooms foster a variety of behaviors that are negotiated by instructors and students, ITAs may identify themselves with students during behavior negotiation when building rapport, especially by exchanging jokes (Unger-Gallagher, 1991). Making their student identity relevant may distort the teacher-student relationship, which ITAs might need to renegotiate. Little research has been done to show whether ITA student identity actually emerges and if does, then how. This study addresses the questions of what attributes of ITA's identities emerge during humorous exchanges with their students, how these attributes shape the teacher-student relationship, and what role humor plays in the identity negotiation process between the ITAs and their students in the university classroom. Four ITAs, all non-native English speakers, participated in this microethnographic study. This study informs research on social identity in that, most of the time, participants made the attributes of their teacher identity relevant, with teacher authority emerging as the most important attribute. While enacting their teacher identity through humorous exchanges, ITAs built rapport and created affiliation with their students. Although humor led to establishing good relationships, it did not lead to the emergence of ITA student identity. This study also contributes to research on humor in that it makes a distinction between the concepts of the target and the butt which allows for deeper understanding of how humor is used to negotiate identity. It also introduces the target switch, or a particular type of counter teasing, in which the initial target redirects humorous aggression to the teaser, thus making her/him the target and a potential butt of the tease. An optimistic finding for ITA research and research on the use of humor by non-native speakers is that even without extensive experience with American culture in general, ITAs can use humor rooted in the local context to negotiate different classroom behaviors and their identities with their students.

Constructing Professionalism: Reifying the Historical Inevitability of Commercialization in Mass Media CommunicationKeith, RuAnn Rae 14 July 2009 (has links)
American political culture has virtually precluded public discussion about the fundamental weaknesses of capitalism, forcing media reformers to argue defensively that commercial broadcasting is a special case of market failure. This investigation questions the historical inevitability of commercialized mass media structure by examining how the ideology of media professionalism is deployed in public debate over noncommercial uses of mass media resources. The work of John Dewey and Walter Lippmann frame a theoretical understanding of how professional autonomy works in opposition to community, and thus how professionalization works in opposition to a shared democratic sphere. Relying on the fundamental concepts of discursive formations studied in depth by Michel Foucault, three case studies analyze historic moments (the invention of listener support by Lewis Hill, the rise of news reporting by community television volunteers, and the introduction of media literacy in K-12 public education) that offer evidence of discursive breaks within the constructions of professionalism that support commercialization, and what those breaks suggest about the re-instantiation of the historical inevitability of the commercial regime. The conclusion discusses how conditions have led us to a point of deprofessionalization, a state in which media consumers disarm the notion of professionalism before it can be deployed as a governing relation, and how deproduction of authoritative texts effectively contains the power of professionalized norms. INDEX WORDS: Professionalism, Professionalization, Media reform, Commercialization, Noncommercial media, Dewey-Lippmann debate, Lewis Hill, Community television, Media literacy, Deproduction, Deprofessionalization

Southern California Water Management: Practical Adoptions and Policy RecommendationsKos, Blake 01 January 2011 (has links)
Contrary to popular belief, the L.A. region is more of a desert than a tropical oasis. Little rainfall during the winter months and practically no rainfall during the summer months is characteristic of Southern California’s desert-like weather patterns. Due to these low precipitation levels, water is considered the most important commodity in the Los Angeles region. Prior to 1900, the inhabitants of this area were fully aware of the importance of water. Most settlements were established near water sources and had adopted various techniques and constructed small-scale dams to conserve and reuse rainwater. Yet these measures were not sufficient to sustain large populations during drought conditions. Most settlers were forced to seek other areas where more reliable sources of water were found. The construction of early engineering feats like the Los Angeles aqueduct quickly changed prior perceptions of the region’s potential. Such systems allowed for cheap and previously inaccessible water to flow to the abundant land, spurring an unprecedented population and agricultural boom. For decades, the construction of more aqueducts and canals provided a sufficient amount of water to meet the demand in the region’s growing agricultural and financial economy. As the abundance of land and favorable weather attracted more businesses and industries into the region, more and more homes were built to accommodate the workforce. By 1936, the Hoover Dam had been built and California had signed and agreed to the Colorado River Compact, which granted Southern California 4.4 million acre-feet annually of the Colorado River’s water. As a result, relatively cheap water was able to meet the demands, thus catapulting California’s agricultural industry and residential development.

Continuing airworthiness policy and application to flying crane aircraftGao, Fei 01 1900 (has links)
This project is part of a collaborative MSc training programme between the
Aviation Industries of China (AVIC) and Cranfield University, aiming at
enhancing the competitiveness of AVIC in both international and domestic
aviation market through applying continuing airworthiness policies in the whole
aircraft development process.
The arrangement of the research project is that all students start with a Group
Design Project which is based on the Flying Crane Project provided by AVIC.
Individual research projects will address some aspects of the Flying Crane
Project during the Group Design Project, and then further developed during the
period for individual projects. The aim of this research is to apply the
airworthiness requirements and the methodology of the Maintenance Steering
Group logic (MSG-3) in the Flying Crane Project. This is because that
maintenance is one of the key factors of Continuing Airworthiness, and MSG-3
logic is the most accepted and approved method to develop scheduled
maintenance for civil aircrafts.
The main objectives of this project include: (1) To investigate current Continuing
Airworthiness regulations, including European airworthiness requirements (as
the main regulation to comply with) and Chinese airworthiness regulations (as
an important reference and supplement to the research); (2) To investigate the
main analysis methodology of reliability and maintainability, including Damage
Tolerance and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA); (3) To analyse the
data resulted from the Group Design Project using MSG-3 logic to produce a set
of Continuing Airworthiness instructions, for the operator and maintenance
organisation of the aircraft, from the design organization’s perspective; (4) To
develop Continuing Airworthiness instructions for airline operators to compose
maintenance programmes for Flying Crane aircrafts, including maintenance
tasks and intervals for the selected airframe systems and structural components;
and (5) To identify applicable maintenance organisations in China for Flying
Crane aircrafts in accordance with both European and Chinese airworthiness
requirements.
On completion of this research, two aspects of Continuing Airworthiness have
been investigated, including maintenance programme and maintenance
organization. With MSG-3 logic, the author developed the maintenance plan for
three structural components (fuselage skin panel, wing root joint, and
fin-fuselage attachment) and one airframe system (fuel system) based on results
from the Group Design Project. The author also investigated the Chinese
domestic aircraft maintenance companies, and selected suitable maintenance
organizations based on technical and economical criteria.

Living in the "Age of Accountability": How Co-Decision Empowers the European Parliament in the Design of EU AgenciesKenard, Patrick C 07 May 2011 (has links)
Bátora alleges that political accountability has been “almost entirely overlooked” (2010, 2) in studies of the European External Action Service. An examination of the subject that extends previous studies on agency design, the co-decision procedure, the “democratic deficit,” and European Union foreign policy would resolve the neglect. As a result, the study derives a hypothesis from an established theory of bureaucratic structure. Findings suggest that during the design of EU agencies co-decision power improves the ability of the European Parliament to institutionalize methods of accountability to it.
