Landscape changes in East Berlin after 1989

Dellenbaugh, Mary Hartshorn 07 July 2014 (has links)
This dissertation describes a range of connected changes that took place in the eastern half of Berlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The three articles tell the story of immediate changes to discourses about built spaces and built space forms (article 1), symbolic appropriations in the negotiations surrounding the creation of a new unified Berliner inner-city (article 2), and the effect of the changes in discursive and symbolic restructurings in the subsequent development of two Berlin districts with different built space types (article 3). Under the framework of grounded theory, this project operationalized several semiotic analysis techniques for the study of the cultural landscape and combined these with discourse analysis and demographic data to derive the results presented in the three articles described above. The project was guided by five hypotheses: H1: Semiotics is an effective analytical method for the analysis of cultural landscapes. H2: The symbolic landscape of East Berlin after 1990 was dominated by a western cultural mythos which pervaded the symbolic capital and architectural style of the new/old capital city. H3: The changes to the symbolic landscape of East Berlin after 1990 reflected a very specific and narrow pre-WWI historical narrative. H4: This discursive transference had tangible material effects on the material and demographic development of the Eastern districts. H5: The stigmatization of Berlin-Marzahn directly after German reunification was primarily due to this discursive transference. All five hypotheses could be successfully tested and validated from the empirical research. The mix of methods presented in this project proved well-suited to the structural analysis of cultural landscapes. Both it and the theory developed, namely that the narrative of the dominant power, economic, political, or colonial, can be “read” by examining the symbols embedded in the cultural landscape, would benefit from further research in other contexts.

Irrigation and persistence in the dry zone of Sri Lanka : a geoarchaeological study

Gilliland, Krista January 2011 (has links)
This thesis presents an independent, sediment-based record of landscape change within an agricultural hinterland. Established historical and archaeological sequences document the primary occupation of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s ancient capital, beginning ca. 400 BC and lasting until it was largely abandoned in AD 1017. Anuradhapura is located in the island’s dry zone, which depends almost completely on the unpredictable Northeastern Monsoon for water. Oral history and historical narratives have long held that large-scale irrigated rice cultivation took place in the hinterland to produce an agricultural surplus that sustained the urban and monastic populations. However, until the onset of the Anuradhapura Hinterland Project in 2005, the archaeological record of the hinterland was undocumented, leaving existing narratives untested. The geoarchaeological research presented here was undertaken as part of the Hinterland Project, in order to document the chronology and cultural and environmental processes that contributed to the formation of this irrigated landscape. Optical dating of sediments demonstrates that the onset of large-scale irrigation began ca. 400 BC, and the construction of new works continued until Anuradhapura’s late occupation period. Sampled reservoirs and channels began to infill, indicating widespread disuse, within ca. 100 years of Anuradhapura’s abandonment. Soil micromorphology and bulk sediment characterisation document hinterland habitation, water management, and cultivation activities prior to the establishment of large-scale irrigation. This work illustrates the coping strategies that people employed to deal with the vagaries of the dry zone environment and demonstrates that hinterland land use changed throughout the primary occupation period. Although largescale irrigation works infilled relatively rapidly, cultural activity and land use re-emerged following this period of disuse.

Lietuvos Respublikos valstybinių parkų veikla kompleksinio paveldo apsaugos srityje: idėjos ir praktika / Activity of state parks of the republic of lithuania in the field of integral heritage conservation: ideas and practice

Mikelevičius, Laimis 23 June 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Landscape heritage protection is nature‘s and culture‘s heritage protection which was settled because of interaction of natural and anthropogenic factors in the area. This heritage protection is better than others because it is common integrated, when not a separate monument is protected, but all landscape. This type of heritage protection leads to a better security that valuable culture and nature heritage will be saved for nowadays and future generations. The topic of this paper was chosen to see if this kind of heritage protection exists in Lithuania and how it is performed in practice. In addition to this, to see what place landscape heritage protection takes in system of protected areas formed on scientific bases. One of the aims of this paper is to compare Lithuanian landscape heritage protection concepts with concepts of USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, Europe and international landscape heritage protection concept. This is very important because this concept in Lithuania was not analyzed before. What is more, it is important to name the localization of landscape heritage protection in the context of common heritage protection and vicissitude of nature and culture factors. Lithuanian landscape heritage protection could be rated as a concept based on ideological level and represented by its creators. That is what separates it from other fields of heritage protection. This conclusion can be made because of analyses made by P. Kavaliauskas is J. Bučas and consistent work... [to full text]

Hors-champs patrimonial : la construction du paysage de Rio de Janeiro, entre transformations urbaines et labellisation Unesco / Heritage "off-screen" : the construction of the landscape of Rio de Janeiro, between urban transformations and the Unesco "labelling"

Zamant, Véronique 10 September 2015 (has links)
Rio +20. Rio Fifa 2014. Rio JO 2016… / Rio +20. Rio Fifa 2014. Rio JO 2016… The "marvelous city" keeps on hosting international events, and by doing so it claims its position as an international cultural capital. At the same time, it causes important urban and social transformations on cariocas' territories. In this effervescent context, the city gets an Unesco label in 2012 as “cultural landscape”. What are the stakes and limits of an international recognition of the landscape's heritage on a metropolis that is undergoing transformations? This research proposes to free itself from the “safe notion” of heritage in order to interrogate directly the procedure of “heritagization” through its articulation with the context of urban transformation thus contributing to an anthropology of the city in transformation. At the same time, not only it focuses on the negotiations, justifications and agreements between the actors involved in the institutional and international procedure, but also on the imaginary that could exist about the heritage value of the carioca landscape amongst all the city local actors, from the inhabitants to the politicians. The critic perspective of this analysis, that involves a political study, identity representations, economical power and territorial inscription, finally leads us to interrogate what stays at the edge of the procedure and what the attribution of the label lets as heritage to the Cariocas’ territories. We propose to consider the “heritage off-screen”, as an opportunity to have a critical look on our ways of “making (the) city” nowadays.

The Grande-Chartreuse monastery (French Alps) and the Qadisha valley - forest of Cedars of God (Northern Lebanon)

Pasquier, Justine 09 December 2011 (has links)
The aim of this research is to analyse and understand relationships between religious heritage and mountain protected areas (natural heritage). This research highlights the persistent boundaries between natural and cultural heritage and the meaning of the sacred in the heritage process. The meaning of “religious spaces, places and edifices” and the relationships between heritage / society / mountain areas and granting of heritage status have been studied. Recently, Natural Parks develop new missions and are interested by the “cultural landscape” concept developed by international authorise (e.g. UNESCO). What are the meaning and the significance of cultural and religious heritage in mountain protected areas? The studied areas are the Grande-Chartreuse monastery (French Alps), the Qadisha valley and the Forest of cedars of God (Northern Lebanon). Qualitative methodology has been chosen for this research, such as chronosystemic approach, textual analysis (tourist documents and travel books) and analysis of collected data (legislations, interviews, government reports, fieldwork, maps, etc.).

A paisagem em Darcy Azambuja : outras dimensões

Maschio, Alcione Moraes Jacques 14 August 2008 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-05-20T19:55:39Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Alcione Moraes J Maschio.pdf: 435149 bytes, checksum: 5075dab0d4c9f63d9c4c7ec6d58c1f96 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-20T19:55:39Z (GMT).

Stello, Vladimir Fernando January 2013 (has links)
The landscape has been subject of interest of several areas of knowledge, among them history, geography, architecture, urban planning, visual arts and, more recently, environmental and cultural heritage preservation. The fast process of territorial transformation of the last fifty years has put in risk the environmental and cultural heritage of many communities. In response, the appreciation of cultural landscape is gaining momentum as reference for these transformations, among other reasons, for its direct association with the collective memory, the cultural references and its symbolic content. In Rio Grande do Sul, since the 1920’s, there is a work of preservation of the remnants of the Jesuit-Guaraní Reductions as the only representative heritage in the Missions Region. The interest in heritage preservation understood as the before, the during and the after of the reductions began only in recent years, when we have widened the concept of heritage. Now we take into consideration the ensemble of the many cultural contributions that shapes and greatly enriches the vision of the region, and may contribute to its growth. Considering this fact, there was an expansion on the studies to date, from a territorial perspective of cultural landscape. More than the preservation of the built heritage, the protection of its cultural legacy should contemplate the landscapes, transformed and created by the first inhabitants in prehistory, the Jesuit-Guaraní, the European migrants of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and the current residents. It should also include the traditions and the local know-how, for they assist the understanding of the territory. Recognize these values will give the true dimension of the cultural importance of the region, and it will promote the rescue of the communities’ traditions, which has been lost over the years. Conserving the customs and the memory makes it more likely the safeguard of this cultural landscape of national and international importance, strengthening the identity values of the communities they belong to. The proper use of its potential, taking into account the cultural diversity that shapes it, will possibly promote the socio-cultural and economic sustainable development of the region. This thesis aims to initiate the recognition of the elements that mark the region and make it unique, for its ethnic and cultural diversity, testimony of the occupation of the territory marked by conflict for defining boundaries.

"Arruando" vejo rio, homens, pedra & cal : a des-re-patrimonialização do sítio histórico tombado de Penedo-AL

SIlva, Daniella Pereira de Souza 25 July 2016 (has links)
The patrimonialization understood as a processo of resignification of places has been created conflicts as consequence of its territorialization in preexisting territories, forcing a meeting between culture, habits, modes and lifestyles consolidated andu nique, and the competitive tourist market of cities heritage. This study intended to understand how the patrimonialization is institutionally processed and how its daily perceived by the people in the historic sites preserved considering their relationship with the patrimonialization agents and the cultural landscape. We chosed the county of Penedo, situated at the Baixo São Francisco region in the state of Alagoas, because its preserved in the federal, state and county level. As principal objective we sought to understand which mechanisms, processes, strategies and conflicts are in the basis of the patrimonialization process of the historical preserved county of Penedo-AL, explaining the complexity of relationships between the external and internal agents of patrimonialization and the people of that area, to make it viable. This research was developed using as methodological way the qualitative approach and tried to stick in three structural issues: the changes and continuities in the county of Penedo as contributory factors of the patrimonialization process in its various dimensions; the multiple perceptions of/in the heritage landscape and, the patrimonialization perceived as a des-re-territorialization process. Those reflections around these issues allowed to conclude that the processo of patrimonialization afects the perception of cultural landscape by the residente population such as by the entreprenuers and self-employed people that “use” the historic área; that as na institutional process still persists weaknesses in policies and management, in the case of Penedo, in the county, state and federal scales. Moreover, the commodification of places woth competitive intente in the tourism sector, leads them to a process of des-re-patrimonialization that follows performing un continuum based on the population immobility of the historic sites preserved because new meanings are being created and new functions are being established as a consequence of the recognition of heritage through standardization instead of experience.
