Mombach, Clarissa Kristen January 2008 (has links)
The present research is a reflection about the cultural identity in the contemporary context, more specifically, about the Teuto-Gaucha Brazilian culture and its representation on the contemporary riograndense literature. For this reason, it was researched books on the gaucha literature which focus the immigrants and German descendents as main characters in the narrative. Among these books it was selected a corpus consisting from A Asa esquerda do anjo (1981), by Lya Luft, and Valsa para Bruno Stein (1986), by Charles Kiefer. Based on the performed analysis, it was noticed that the Teuto-Gaucha culture is represented through a stressed ambiguity in the main characters life, which came from an in-between place condition, consisting of the German culture heritage and the life in Brazil. In general, the presence of the Teuto-Gaucha culture can be observed in the use of the German language, in the strictness of the customs and behaviors, in the ethnic and genre prejudice, in the food and religion defended and later abandoned (in the case of Bruno Stein). This way it is clearly perceived the marks of the German immigration – which began in 1824 – on the contemporary literature written in Rio Grande do Sul. This culture, translated by the German descendents and integrated into the Brazilian context, created the hybrid Teuto-Gaúcha Brazilian culture, specific from this group, whose members are still visible, considering the novels analyzed.

Cultural intelligence and its role in the leadership style and leadership effectiveness domain

Solomon, Anthony Wilfred 2017 May 1900 (has links)
Introduction: An interconnected world is impelling workforce composition towards cultural heterogeneity. Since leadership is a cultural construct, leaders should display those styles that enable them to function effectively in culturally varied conditions. Cultural intelligence could assist leaders in this respect. Purpose: To investigate the role cultural intelligence plays in the leadership style (empowering and directive leadership) and leadership effectiveness domain, so as to aid leader selection and development. Method: A systematic review of the cultural intelligence literature, coupled with content and thematic analysis, allowed for the knowledge to be organised per the concept, definition and truth statement (validated hypotheses) elements of the general body of scientific knowledge framework. Correlation and regression analysis of cross-sectional survey data, from 1140 respondents, were used to assess relationships between leader cultural intelligence, leadership styles (empowering and directive) and leadership effectiveness. Results: Nine concepts associated with, and 24 different definitions of cultural intelligence, were identified. Sixty percent of hypotheses on cultural intelligence have been confirmed as truth statements. The relationship between leader cultural intelligence and empowering leadership demonstrated a large practical effect. This relationship was underpinned primarily by metacognitive and motivational cultural intelligence. The relationship with directive leadership carried a medium practical effect, and was strongest at the motivational and cognitive cultural intelligence levels. The part played by subordinates’ cultural identity in the display of empowering and directive leadership by culturally intelligent leaders was insignificant; rather, leader cultural intelligence was the dominant informant of these leadership styles. Finally, leader cultural intelligence did not impact the relationship between empowering leadership and leadership effectiveness. Although it did negatively affect the directive leadership and leadership effectiveness relationship, the moderation had no practical effect. Conclusions: The concepts associated with cultural intelligence are: accomplishment, culture, expatriates, experience, fit, intelligence, motivation, supervision and training. Cultural intelligence definitions remain mostly based on those of the seminal authors. The majority of truths cover just six themes. Leadership style (empowering and directive) is a function of leader cultural intelligence. Although leader cultural intelligence extends beyond subordinates’ cultural identity in predicting empowering and directive leadership, it does not influence their relationships with leadership effectiveness. / Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL) / D.B.L.

The cultural dimension in a contextual hermeneutics of suffering

Son, Chul-Min 30 June 2002 (has links)
Most current studies of suffering are based upon an existential approach which focuses on suffering itself. Theodicy has mainly been concerned with people's attitudes and communication within themselves and with others about religious symbols and ideas. Particularly, this study examines the Korean attitude to suffering using its cultural dimension in a contextual hermeneutics. The researcher was interested in two notions: personal identity in its cultural dimension and the hermeneutics of suffering. The research questions addressed were as follows. a) How to define Korean personhood? b) What is cultural identity? c) How do people create personal identity? d) How does a person cope with suffering? The chief findings were as follows. a) A study of Korean self-understanding can be accomplished by exploring their lifeworld to describe and understand this people's language for daily communication, popular cuJtural myths, and spirituality. b) Cultural identity in this thesis means indigenous Korean self-understanding using the socio-cultural framework in its own terms and ideas. This self-knowledge mediates history, culture, and language. c) Personal identity is constructed by a narrative identity. d) Suffering can be coped with by communication with and through oneself, others, and God. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D.Th. Opvoedkundig-sielkundige ondersoek na derdekultuur-kinders in Suid-Afrika / An educational-psychological exploratory investigation on third culture kids in South-Africa

Bester, Dierdré 01 1900 (has links)
This study deals with Third Culture Kids in South Africa, focusing on introducing the phenomenon to parents, children, teachers, psychologists and other concerned parties. “Third Culture Kids” is the term used to describe children who have spent a number of their developmental years with their parents abroad, after which they return to their country of origin. A third culture is created when children integrates the culture of their parents together with the culture of the host country in order to function readily in the host community. The problem arises when the children return to their home country as they then encounter problems adapting and fitting into the local community. The number of Third Culture Kids in the South African context has increased dramatically since 1994, as international companies employed more South Africans abroad and many new South African Embassies were established all over the world. The tendency of having the family accompanying the parents to other countries results in the children residing in various countries and being exposed to an international and privileged lifestyle This study consists of a literature study of the profile and cultural identity-formation of Third Culture Kids, as well as the reverse culture shock they experience on their return to their country of origin. An empirical study is conducted to establish how South African Third Culture Kids‟ profiles compare with that of the literature and whether they are affected by reverse culture shock upon their return to South Africa. The information, gathered by means of a survey and individual interviews and from the literature study, was then used to compile guidelines for a programme with which parents would be able to assist their Third Culture Kids during the repatriation to their country of origin. Therapists without international experience would also be able to benefit from using this programme to assist Third Culture Kids. The study confirms that: the profiles of South African Third Culture Kids have commonalities with those described in the literature; South African Third Culture Kids experience problems on re-entry adapting to the culture of the country of origin; parents and therapists should be empowered to assist and support Third Culture Kids with problems relating to their return to their passport country / Educational Studies / D.Ed. A imagem da nação: cinema e identidade cultural no Brasil (1960-1990) / The image of the nation: cinema and cultural identity in Brzil (1960-1990)

Eduardo Antonio Lucas Parga 15 December 2008 (has links)
The present study proposes an analysis which ranges from Cinema Novo, in the beginning of the 1960s, covers the years of the military dictatorship and eventually reaches the demise of Embrafilme (1990), during the Collor years (1990-1992), trying to understand how cinema became an arena of representations of moving images, contended by different social agents in their attempt to obtain the hegemonic production of the cinematographic images of the nation. On one side, Cinema Novo, with a nationalist cultural perspective, and, on the other, the official cultural policy of the authoritarian and nationalist State too, which was promoting an economic modernization of the Nation, and, between them, other cinematographic agents (exhibitors, distributors, Embrafilme, Cinema Marginal, pornochanchada, foreign movies among others) interacting in the fight for the preponderance in the process of producing movies which would constitute the national identity in the cinematographic field. Brimming with contradictions, involving conceptions about popular culture and mass culture, the Brazilian cinematographic production expressed the sum of the projects in contention taking into account the issues of the national question and popular culture. The result was a rich cinematographic diversity.

Sarmento, Rosemari 11 August 2008 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-05-21T16:03:28Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Rosemari Sarmento.pdf: 1227474 bytes, checksum: f56455f39c0e9c8918f1e981d393b56a (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-21T16:03:28Z (GMT). The objective is to launch a new look on its respective creation and signification methods, considered as their specificities. Therefore, even if constructed in part or entirely from a literary text, cinema diverges, exceeds and crosses the initial status, presenting different dimensions and processes. As literature and cinema operate in the same environment, the one of narration, in a second moment, a comparative analysis is made from both works (the romance and the film Lavoura arcaica) and its texts are confronted thru some of its narrative procedures. From the adopted study approach, it is problematized in which measure the romance and the film do present the conflict father/tradition (Iohána) versus son/modernity (André), tying it directly with the question of regional culture decurrent from the conflict between the Lebanese tradition, descendent from a Jewish and Christian immigration culture, and another regional and cultural territory. It shows then how such confrontation is perceived and constructed from the literary speech of Raduan Nassar and, later, translated and constituted into the filmic speech of Luiz Fernando Carvalho.
