Opvoedkundig-sielkundige ondersoek na derdekultuur-kinders in Suid-Afrika / An educational-psychological exploratory investigation on third culture kids in South-Africa

Bester, Dierdré 01 1900 (has links)
This study deals with Third Culture Kids in South Africa, focusing on introducing the phenomenon to parents, children, teachers, psychologists and other concerned parties. “Third Culture Kids” is the term used to describe children who have spent a number of their developmental years with their parents abroad, after which they return to their country of origin. A third culture is created when children integrates the culture of their parents together with the culture of the host country in order to function readily in the host community. The problem arises when the children return to their home country as they then encounter problems adapting and fitting into the local community. The number of Third Culture Kids in the South African context has increased dramatically since 1994, as international companies employed more South Africans abroad and many new South African Embassies were established all over the world. The tendency of having the family accompanying the parents to other countries results in the children residing in various countries and being exposed to an international and privileged lifestyle This study consists of a literature study of the profile and cultural identity-formation of Third Culture Kids, as well as the reverse culture shock they experience on their return to their country of origin. An empirical study is conducted to establish how South African Third Culture Kids‟ profiles compare with that of the literature and whether they are affected by reverse culture shock upon their return to South Africa. The information, gathered by means of a survey and individual interviews and from the literature study, was then used to compile guidelines for a programme with which parents would be able to assist their Third Culture Kids during the repatriation to their country of origin. Therapists without international experience would also be able to benefit from using this programme to assist Third Culture Kids. The study confirms that: the profiles of South African Third Culture Kids have commonalities with those described in the literature; South African Third Culture Kids experience problems on re-entry adapting to the culture of the country of origin; parents and therapists should be empowered to assist and support Third Culture Kids with problems relating to their return to their passport country / Educational Studies / D.Ed. The cultural dimension in a contextual hermeneutics of suffering

Son, Chul-Min 06 1900 (has links)
Most current studies of suffering are based upon an existential approach which focuses on suffering itself. Theodicy has mainly been concerned with people's attitudes and communication within themselves and with others about religious symbols and ideas. Particularly, this study examines the Korean attitude to suffering using its cultural dimension in a contextual hermeneutics. The researcher was interested in two notions: personal identity in its cultural dimension and the hermeneutics of suffering. The research questions addressed were as follows. a) How to define Korean personhood? b) What is cultural identity? c) How do people create personal identity? d) How does a person cope with suffering? The chief findings were as follows. a) A study of Korean self-understanding can be accomplished by exploring their lifeworld to describe and understand this people's language for daily communication, popular cultural myths, and spirituality. b) Cultural identity in this thesis means indigenous Korean self-understanding using the socio-cultural framework in its own terms and ideas. This self-knowledge mediates history, culture, and language. c) Personal identity is constructed by a narrative identity. d) Suffering can be coped with by communication with and through oneself, others, and God. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / Th.D.

Liu, Wen-Pin Unknown Date (has links)
Researches of Mainland China and relative inquires can hardly be separated from the position of “Explicit Learning” in Taiwan, while facing political, economical as well as military threats from Mainland China, in addition to the constant declaration of its sovereign right on Taiwan. Due to the threats from Mainland Chain remain unchanged, cross-strait relations and the existence of Taiwan can’t help but tightly link together. Thus, presentations of research results concerning cross-strait relations have become one of the popular research topics for scholars. At present, numerous researches of cross-strait relations have been carried out, yet the establishment of cross-strait relations theory is somehow obviously inadequate. Such insufficiency often results in a variety of negligence to the outcome of existed cross-strait relations researches and it is frequently brought up by scholars. Although present researches on cross-strait relations are categorized into five approaches; the diplomatic history approach, the divided nation approach, the rational choice approach, the elite conflict approach and the asymmetrical political approach. Nevertheless, there is none to categorize Taiwan national identity into three key aspects which are systematic identity, cultural identity and ethnic identity for further discussion, and nor is it discussed accordingly to include it as an approach of researching cross-strait relations. However, it is clearly that the connotation change of Taiwan’s national identity has decisive influence on cross-strait relations. As a result, this dissertation is based on the assumption that China’s attitude of swallowing up Taiwan by military force remains unchanged in the long run and concentrates on the discussion of national identity alteration of the Taiwan people starting from the era of Chiang Kai-Sheik and his son Chiang Ching-Kuo, via the era of Lee Teng-Hui to the era of Chen Shui-Bian , and its influence on Mainland China and Taiwan. It also means to build a research approach on cross-strait relations in this dissertation by setting the change of Taiwan‘s national identity as the independent variable and cross-strait relations as the dependent variable. It further establishes a theory of the influence of national identity alternation on cross-strait relations. Therefore, this dissertation at least provides additional information to assorted theories of cross-strait relations and allows scholars to take the main-stream national identity of the Taiwan People into deeper consideration while they are in the process of explaining, describing and predicting cross-strait relations; hence, it makes the related theories or approaches of cross-strait relations sounder and more complete. The meaning of national identity is rather confusing. Professor Chiang Yi-Hua thinks that national identity ought to be discussed from three aspects of ethnic identity, cultural identity and systematic identity. Without a combined performance of these three aspects complete national identity connotation can’t be existed. This research uses these three aspects to make discussions on national identity. In the research it clearly points out “national identity” is discussed mainly on identifying the Chinese or identifying Taiwan people and “cultural identity” means the identity division of the Taiwan people towards Taiwan culture or Chinese traditional culture after the movement of localization. “Systematic identity” is to discuss the identity difference of the Taiwan people in the political system operations of the Republic of China or People’s Republic of China. Taiwan’s overall performance of these three aspects, from the era of Chiang, Kai-Sheik and Chiang Ching-Kuo, via the era of Lee Teng-Hui to the era of Chen Shui-Bian, created a specific national identity performance during those periods. Vertical comparison was applied to discuss the change of Taiwan’s national identity. Mutual discussions on national identity and cross-strait relations during that period are also completed to launch cause-result connection between Taiwan’s national identity and change of cross-strait relations since the two Chiang era, afterwards, present and future cross-strait relations are inferred from the certainty of cause-result connection and possible development of cross-strait relations under the impacts of Taiwan leader who intends to induce the alternation direction of national identity and Mainland China’s stiff Taiwan policy. It is to present another thinking path and space to researchers who are involved in this field and allow the theory structure of cross-strait relations better equipped.

The impact of brand country-of-origin, Japanese cultural identity and country image congruency in advertising on product evaluations

Unknown Date (has links)
This study is inspired by the social fact that Japanese brands and Japanese image advertising are overflowing in Taiwan. After going through the literature on the three variables of brand country-of-origin, Japanese cultural identity and congruency, this study manipulates country image in advertising with “expression form”, and results of the interactions among variables are as follows: 1.Brand country-of-origin has a significant impact on brand attitude and purchase intention; the evaluation of Japanese brand is better than Taiwanese brand. 2.The degree of Japanese cultural identity has a moderating effect on brand country-of -origin; consumers of high Japanese cultural identity are tend to prefer Japanese brand; however, to consumers of low Japanese cultural identity, the difference between Japanese brand and Taiwanese brand is not obvious. 3.Congruent Advertising leads to a better brand attitude. 4.Whether Japanese brand adopts Japanese image advertising or Taiwanese image advertising, there is no special impact on the brand itself. However, if Taiwanese brand adopts congruent Taiwanese image advertising, it will make consumers have a better brand attitude; incongruent Japanese image advertising won’t bring good to Taiwanese brand but incur consumers’ disfavor of it. Executive implications are also suggested. First, Japanese brands are not always overwhelmingly favored in the market of Taiwan. From the point of personal characteristics, consumers of low Japanese cultural identity won’t change their product evaluations due to the brand country-of-origin image of Japan. Thus, other product or marketing factors might be the keys to consumers’ intentions. Second, consumers of Taiwanese brands do not necessarily prefer Japanese image advertising, and this could be regarded as a warning to Taiwanese brands and practitioners in advertising and marketing, because generally the manufacturers in Taiwan seem to consider that as long as they can build Taiwanese brands Japan-like, the positive image of Japan in advertising would be transferred to consumers’ attitudes on Taiwanese brands. Consequently, Taiwanese brands abusing Japanese image advertising have been prevalent in recent years. The study is based on the negative effects of schema-incongruency on attitude, and the results also prove that under certain circumstances, it would cause consumers’ unfavorable affective responses instead that Taiwanese brand adopts Japanese image advertising. Therefore, in application for practice, positioning strategies of Japanese brands are more flexible to manipulate. Taiwanese brands have to put emphasis on image management and prevent changeful or varied image tactics.

Gaudreau, Mariane 04 1900 (has links)
The main goal of this research project was to determine the cultural identity of the aboriginal people who occupied the Rioux site (DaEi-19), île Verte, during the last centuries of the Late Woodland period. Many cultural groups are known to have travelled in the estuary region of the St. Lawrence River, such as the St. Lawrence Iroquoians, the Maliseet, the Mi’kmaq and the Innus (Montagnais). It is common knowledge that the Stadaconians would, on a regular basis, travel to the Estuary and the Gulf to exploit marine resources and engage in warfare. The influence of this group on the local Algonquians, and vice versa, is still a matter of debate. The cultural identity of the aboriginal groups who occupied the estuarine iroquoian-like sites is still today a sensitive matter, since sustained interactions could have transformed the material culture of the different groups involved. The methodology used to answer the cultural identity issue is a holistic one in which the data from different archaeological and ethnohistoric sources are employed. This project allowed us to confirm the iroquoian nature of the archaeological remains and to suggest that small St. Lawrence Iroquoian groups established themselves on the Rioux site, mainly to intensively exploit the marine resources during the last centuries of the Late Woodland Period. Even though our project did not allow us to demonstrate an actual Algonquian presence on the site, their influence is felt though the lithic raw materials used, which leads us to believe that the Rioux site Iroquoians, and those that exploited the south shore of the river, were not intrusive to the region and that they participated in an important exchange network with the eastern Maritime Algonquians. Our research project also allowed us to shed light on the limitations of our methodology and criticize the traditional archaeological approach based essentially on stylistic identification, typology and macroscopic identification.

Torres Davila, Katy V. 08 1900 (has links)
This research looks forward to knowing and understanding the state of Mérida – Venezuela through the analysis of the image that its residents build of Mérida. The project proposes to use some promotional touristic photographs taken from promotional material produced by Mérida’s tourism office, CORMETUR. This research is designed based on a creative methodology. The participants were invited to make –and to comment- a collage by using a selection provided of photos, in order to recreate the image they have of their state. My aim is to understand how its residents consider Mérida. This research is theoretically supported by the definition of “image” and by the concept of “representation”, in specific through Hall’s (1997) constructivist approach. This last one particularly allows me to interpret what the participant Merideños express in their collage. The analysis of the representations they construct allows to understand Mérida as a “place” (Escobar, 2001) that is composed by an “everyday-life context” and a “touristic context” that integrate each other. Additionally, it is possible to grasp in their representations a question of “cultural identity”, as Cuche (1997) and Hall (2007) understand it.

L'évolution du rapport à l'image de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1908-1928) / The relation of Vicente Blasco Ibáñez to the image (1908-1928) / La relación de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez con la imagen (1908-1928)

Fourrel de Frettes, Cécile 28 September 2012 (has links)
In 1916, the Valencia-born Spanish writer V. Blasco Ibáñez (1867-1928) started a career in cinema and shot Sangre y arena (Blood and Sand), a film adapted from his 1908 novel. Shortly after, the author left for Latin America where he stopped writing novels until 1913. This hiatus, considered by literary critics to be the result of a lack of inspiration, brought about an opening to new artistic ventures in which the image held center stage. Then, during World War I, the writer designed a quantity of film projects; in terms of writing, these coincided with the elaboration of the "cinematographic novel". Finally, the last years of his life were devoted to writing for Hollywood (scenarios, novels, stories). Film studies have recently looked into the Blasquian contribution to the history of Spanish cinematography, but literary critics have scarcely taken an interest in the aesthetic evolution entailed by the novelist's orientation towards the big screen. Moreover, if the Hollywood adaptations of his stories are well-known, the relation of the writer to the cinematography of the WWI era is overlooked despite the fact that it is crucial to the understanding of the evolution of Blasco Ibáñez's writing. In the same way, his relation to the production line in Hollywood should be clarified in the light of unpublished documents. This thesis, based on the analysis of textual and iconographic elements found in French, Spanish and American collections, proposes to throw light on the way in which the advent of the new cinematographic medium may have motivated V. Blasco Ibáñez to rethink his novel writing practice and the distribution of his narratives.

Vybrané psychologické aspekty židovské identity v současné české společnosti / Selected psychological features of Jewish identity in contemporary Czech society

Warren, Jana January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on selected psychological aspects of Jewish identity, namely its content and meaning in contemporary Czech society. It reviews how the bearers of this identity understand and feel positive or negative aspects related to it in their lives. The theoretical part introduces the field of identity in psychology in general and subsequently focuses specifically on Jewish identity. The chosen theoretical model of identity, adjusted to the Czech environment, represents the basis for applied research of this identity. The empirical part is conducted as a qualitative study by means of interpretative phenomenological analysis of in-depth semi-structured interviews. The results mapping contemporary Jewish identity in Czech society should be utilised to raise awareness about this frequently overlooked topic and perhaps also further utilised by professionals who encounter Jewish identity in their work. Language attitudes of parents in Irish-medium primary schools in County Dublin / Les attitudes des parents d’élèves envers le gaélique, dans les écoles primaires d’immersion du comté de Dublin, Irlande

Mas-Moury Mack, Vanessa 24 May 2013 (has links)
This study explores attitudes towards the Irish language in the Republic of Ireland. The Irish language—alongside with English—is the national official language and is taught in school as a compulsory subject from primary school through to the end of secondary level. Despite the low percentage of daily Irish-speakers in the country the demand for Irish-medium education as an alternative means of education has been growing since the 1970s, especially in English-speaking areas. This current study focuses on the language attitudes of parents whose child attends an urban Irish-medium primary school in County Dublin and analyses the reasons for choosing such an education. Although there has been a considerable number of research studies conducted on language attitudes towards Irish in the Republic of Ireland, very few have recently concentrated on families involved with Irish-medium education. Participants included parents with both short term and long term experience with immersion education through Irish. The main research instruments included a self-administered questionnaire and follow-up interviews with a sample of questionnaire respondents as well as teachers from the participating schools. One of the main focuses of this study is parental motivation for sending their child to an Irish-medium school. Results reveal that participants selected such education for their child for two main reasons: identity and cultural capital. Firstly, most participants regarded Irish as a strong cultural identity marker while others also considered the language as a strong marker of ethnic identity. Secondly and most importantly, participants expressed a strong interest in both education and additive bilingualism thus attributing a high cultural value to the Irish language. Findings also show that participants have very positive attitudes towards the Irish language. This is mainly due to their natural favourable disposition to Irish but also to their exposure to the Irish-medium school environment which tends to enhance this positive attitude. But despite participants' efforts to include some Irish in their child's life, either during recreational activities or at home, self-reports did not indicate the emergence of bilingual families. However, there is some evidence that the school facilitates the creation of Irish-speaking social networks between a few families.

La création de l'identité nationale en Grèce et au Japon aux XVIIIème et XIXème siècles / The creation of national Identity in Greece and Japan in the 18th and 19th centuries

Since Antiquity, people have felt the need to establish difference between them employing various elements. At the time, they try to discover the common elements between them: that is, their identity. Thanks to the reflexion made by 18th century savants, the first definition of cultural identity was accorded. But this definition was born until the elite class and was employed by these elite in reaching their political objectives. However, elite have employed the elements that were common with the lower classes people as well.If we see the national identity as the outcome of a process thus we can compared it is “incomparable”. To montred that this comparative study is possible, we have choised the examples of Greece and Japan because they have specially interesting. Despite of geographical and cultural distance and political and historical difference, these territories showed parallel developpments in their reflexiion of identity. Employing language, history, beliefs, literature and external models, Japanese and Greel intellectuals created in 18th century their own reflexion on cultural identity. This reflexion become the fundament of the national identity at the middle of 19th century whem Japan and Greece become Nation-Etat.With this study, we can try to answer the question of identity creation by examining reasons, actors, elements both internal (distinctives elements) and external (common elements) and outcome into the process.
