“The first day of school is over. I stand up again.” : A study about didactic potential in literature that thematise mental illness.

Gabrielsson, Jakob, Hjelm, Rebecka January 2021 (has links)

It is not the spoon that bends. It is only yourself : En queerteoretisk analys av The Matrix, dess didaktiska potential och hur det performativa könet görs och gestaltas

Carling, Johanna January 2020 (has links)
This essay aims to study if, and how, The Matrix (1999) can be read with a queer perspective and how to use it in a classroom setting to further upper secondary school students to discuss transgender issues and develop their own identity. By analysing the film using a hermeneutic method and a queer perspective the results show that much of the lines, cinematography and costume can be viewed as an expression for transgender and queer. The theoretical framework is mainly related to Judith Butler’s research on doing gender and Malin Alkestrand’s concept of didactic potential. The essay shows the didactic potential of the Matrix (1999) and gives concrete examples of lines, cinematography and costume that can be used to begin conversations in the classroom related to gender, sexuality, norms, and performative gender.

”She did have a better life later on” : A qualitative study of how twelve students in grade F-3 reason about the norm-critical version of the fairy tale about Cinderella.

Lindell, Agnes January 2021 (has links)
Swedish school is obliged to actively work with questions concerning gender, equality, rights and opportunities. Furthermore, school shall give the students tools to critically review gender patterns and understand how gender patterns can constrain people’s living conditions (Skolverket, 2019). In school the students read fiction, which in turn contributes to how norms are produced in different ways. Through didactic efforts through critical literacy inspired working processes fiction can be used as a foundation for work with values. It is of thus of relevance how children perceive the norms or norm-breaking aspects as they are produced in fiction. The purpose of the study is therefore to contribute knowledge about students’ different ways of reasoning and relating to a norm-breaking story through a Critical literacy-inspired didactic perspective. As a basis for the study is the norm-breaking fairytale about Cinderella (Jansson & Jensfelt, 2018). The study aims to address the following questions: ·       Which norm-breaking aspects do the students retell in a dialogue about the norm-breaking fairytale? ·       Which aspects of a norm-breaking fairytale can the students relate to from their own reality? ·       How are the students’ reasoning affected by the norm-breaking fairytale after a literacy talk?  The study is qualitative and is built on semi-structured interviews with 12 students in year 2 and 3. The result of the study shows which norm-breaking aspects the students’ reason about. Furthermore, the results show that a literacy talk seems to have an impact on the students’ reasoning. The empirical material is analyzed through gender theory together with Alkestrand’s (2017) definition of didactic potential.

Låt romanen komma in – Transformativt lärande i gymnasieskolans litteraturundervisning / Let the novel in – Transformative learning and the teaching of literatureat upper secondary school

Bradling, Björn January 2020 (has links)
The function of reading fictional texts in Swedish secondary school education has been questioned in public debate (e.g. Melin, 2016-07-17), even though the reading of fictional texts has been shown to be important to young people’s academic achievement (Jerrim &amp; Moss, 2019). Swedish policy documents clearly state that upper secondary teaching of literature in the subject of Swedish is aimed at increasing the pupils’ self-awareness and their comprehension of experiences and perceptions of others (The Swedish National Agency of Education, 2011). However, results from a large-scale reading project show that Swedish teenagers find it difficult to reflect upon their own roles as readers of fictional texts (Nordberg, 2018). Therefore, this licentiate thesis targets upper secondary reading of fictional texts, and the possibility of using literary terminology pedagogically to visualize and develop pupils’ transformative learning processes. The overall research question posed is: - How can applied literary terminology be used in upper secondary literary studies todevelop pupils’ transformative learning processes? A pilot study was conducted based on three focus group-sessions with teachers and the librarian at an upper secondary school. The main study was based on reading journals written by pupils reading John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel Låt den rätte komma in (2004) [Let the Right One In, 2008] as part of the Swedish 3 course. The methodological framework is inspired by participatory research. Consequently, this research-project uses an inclusive approach to the participants – 11 Swedish teachers, 1 librarian and 31 pupils – which means that they are considered as subjects rather than objects of knowledge. My own role in this project is tripartite: as a colleague, a teacher, and researcher. The pilot study was conducted in order to find out which possibilities and obstacles arose when the staff participants worked on teaching literature. The main study, within which the pupils are included as participants, focuses on advancing meta-perspectives of their own reading and made use of results from the pilot study and concepts derived from Felski’s (2008) ‘modes of textual engagement’. The pilot study revealed tensions which obstruct the teaching of literature, including the teacher-experienced importance of pupils ‘stepping into’ stories, as opposed to a great many pupils’ reluctance both towards the text and the act of reading. Moreover, the tension between engaged reading and the heavy emphasis placed on assessable outcomes of teaching and learning was addressed by the teachers. The main study revealed that reluctance is an inherent part of reading fictional texts. Further, that the pedagogical application of concepts used in literary studies can support the reading process, make it move forward, encourage the adoption of meta-perspectives on reading and on the pupils themselves as readers, as well as supporting a cohesive view of the finalized text. In summary, the findings suggest that applying literary concepts in literary studies supports pupils towards advancing their transformative learning and potentially points to a new way of making the goals section of the policy documents tangible for teaching and learning practices. According to this study, transformative learning-goals can be achieved if critical perspectives are preceded by individual engagement with the reading of the text. The suggested concept of transformative potential is beneficial to an analysis of the pedagogical function of a certain fictional text used in a certain learning situation geared towards transformative learning. This finding stands in contrast to trends of using reading as a means of writing practice or imaging historical epochs. / <p>Licentiate Thesis in Education with Specialisation in Didactics.</p>

Graecum est, non legitur : Främmandegöringens och genrens didaktiska potential i Umberto Ecos Rosens namn / Graecum est, non legitur : The didactic potential of defamiliarisation and genre in Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose

Bjälvegård, David January 2023 (has links)
The aim of the paper is to examine what didactic potential may exist in Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose (1980) in the education of the Swedish language for the upper secondary school. It is approached from a literary scientific angle and is in part about how pupils can learn how to manage the uniqueness of the literary texts and in part how pupils can use genre theory to understand the novel. To explore the first subject Viktor Shklovsky’s theories about automatism, defamiliarisation and roughened form are used. The other subject is mainly studied with Tzvetan Todorov’s article “The Typology of Detective Fiction” as a starting point. It is deduced that the didactic potential of the novel is great if the pupils are given good guidance. The novel’s extensive use of Latin and other foreign languages is an asset when using Shklovsky’s theories, because there is a lot of room for interpretation and reflection. The genre analysis too has great didactic potential because the The Name of the Rose relates to suspense novels in both typical and atypical ways.

Skönlitteratur i samhällskunskap : En kvalitativ studie av boken Björnstads didaktiska potential / Fiction in social studies : A qualitative study of the book Björnstad’s didactic potential

Lindgren, Ida January 2023 (has links)
In the autumn of 2020, the Swedish Parliament decided that sex education should be one of the objectives for all teacher education (from preschool and up to upper secondary school) from the autumn of 2021. But the decision does not explain how it should be down or which knowledge goals in the syllabus are covered. The teacher get a lot of freedom to implement the assignment. The purpose of this essay is to investigate the didactic potential in Fredrik Backman’s book Björnstad. The book has been analyzed on the basis of the aspects identity creation, gender and gender roles, and status, within the framework of social studies 1b. To fulfill the purpose of the study, a qualitative text analysis has been applied. The result show that the book has didactic potential because the book shows the characters wrestling with their respective identities and roles in their individual’s ways, where the ice hockey culture has a great impact.

Zetterström, Emma January 2023 (has links)
This study aims to investigate the didactic potential inherent in Sophocles' Antigone and Euripides' Medea within the framework of the Swedish school curriculum, coupled with its value-based assignment viewed through a gender theoretical perspective. The primary inquiries guiding this study are as follows: What pedagogical possibilities reside in the tragedies of Antigone and Medea concerning gender dynamics and their alignment with the educational objectives of the Swedish curriculum? In what ways do Antigone and Medea diverge in their treatment of gender-related themes? Additionally, what pedagogical considerations must educators bear in mind when addressing the teaching of Antigone and Medea across various instructional contexts? The theoretical foundations underpinning this investigation encompass gender theory and the theory delineating didactic potential in fiction, positing that literature possesses the capacity to foster critical thinking concerning foundational values. The principal methodological approach employed in this study is close reading, a method that entails a meticulous analysis of the text to discern subtle nuances and complexities inherent in the representation of gender in Antigone and Medea. The preeminent findings underscore the pervasive presence of the male-female dichotomy within the two works. Existing scholarship indicates a male association with the public sphere (polis) and a female association with the domestic sphere (oikos). However, both Antigone and Medea navigate between these spheres, reflecting their complexity and norm-defying nature. Notably, these characters exhibit traits traditionally ascribed to males, such as strong will, courage, and a propensity to question authority, offering intriguing implications from a gender theoretical standpoint. Consequently, the didactic potential of both tragedies is deemed substantial.  The tragedies serve as an auspicious foundation for aligning with the school's core values and the objectives of the Swedish curriculum. However, pedagogical deliberations are imperative, extending beyond individual reading. Integrating literature discussions and diverse tasks is advisable to broaden students' perspectives and enhance their repertoire. Teachers should also be cognizant of the inherent problematic aspects within the tragedies, necessitating a nuanced approach in instructional planning.

What is offered to children through children's literature in preschool? : An analysis of eight picture books nominated for the Preschool Children's Literature Prize 2023

Karlsson, Jessica, Eriksson, Linda January 2023 (has links)
This study contains analysis from eight different children’s books, who are nominated for the preschool children’s literature prize on the platform Polyglutt, to look at the didactic potentials the books contain based on the Swedish preschool’s foundations of values. The purpose of the study is to illuminate and emphasize the importance that preschools teachers in their pedagogical planning makes conscious choices on the fiction the children in preschool are offered. To dwell deeper into the purpose of the study we use three main research questions, who ask for the didactic potential related to the foundation of values in preschool and also how feelings and relationships are portrayed and made visible in the literature. The theoretical framework we used to analyze the content of the books is Alkestrand’s (2016) description of books didactical potential. As help, we have used Rhedin's (1992) theory of how a children's book's text and image work together and Kåreland's (2021) description of the construction and structure of a children's book. The method used is a qualitative analysis based on the study's methodological questions where we answer what didactic potential we see in the book and why the book is relevant to read in preschool. The result that can be seen based on the analysis made, is that the selection’s of books we have used show that they are relevant to use in preschool, based on their didactic potential.
