Silva, Liliane Pereira da 07 April 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T18:24:15Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Liliane Pereira da Silva.pdf: 1475228 bytes, checksum: 6421991f69c754b7074bd467c77dec2e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-04-07 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / The aim of this research was to verify how argumentation occurs in an online educational forum as well as to map the interaction network in the analyzed forum, observing how the discussion was set up in it. The research was held with a group of Práticas de Leitura e Escrita na Contemporaneidade, offered by Secretariat for Education of São Paulo (SEE-SP) in association with Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) in the Post-graduation Program of Applied Linguistics and Language Studies (LAEL). The course was exclusively online and attended by aproximately 10,000 teachers of all disciplines of Basic Education II, teacher-coordinators (PCs), teacher-coordinators and teaching supervisors of the state schools in São Paulo. The theoretical basis that guided the research was divided into three aspects: the first one related to interaction, according to Gunawardena, Lowe and Anderson (1997) and Anderson and Kanuka (1998); the second one related to language analysis in a real context of use, guided by Systemic Functional Linguistics, more precisely by the concept of Contextual Configuration (CC) and generic structure potential (GSP) developed by Halliday e Hasan (1989); and the third one related to argumentation in discussion forums according to the studies of Coffin, Painter and Hewings (2005). Based on the qualitative analysis of the discussion forum, it was possible to verify how interaction and argumentation can relate in the environment. As the interaction develops better, the possibilities of deepening the discussion increase, and, consequently, the chances of developing more argumentative strategies increase too. It was also possible to realize how the articulation between the interaction development and discussion is like in relation to the type of mediation that occurred in the analyzed environment / O objetivo desta pesquisa foi verificar como a argumentação ocorreu em um fórum de discussão online com finalidade educacional, bem como mapear a rede das interações no fórum analisado, observando como a discussão se configurou.

Improving the interfaces of online discussion forums to enhance learning support : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Information Science in Information Systems at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Jonnavithula, Lalitha January 2008 (has links)
This thesis describes a research work aimed at improving the interfaces of online discussion forums (ODFs) in relation to their functional support to enhance learning. These ODFs form part of almost all Learning Management Systems (LMSs) such as WebCT, Moodle and Blackboard, which are widely used in education nowadays. Although ODFs are identified as valuable sources to learning, their interfaces are limited in terms of providing support to students, such as in the areas of managing their postings as well as in facilitating them to quickly locate and obtain specified information. In addition, these systems lack features to support inter-institutional cooperation that could potentially increase knowledge sharing between students and educators of different institutions. The interface design objective of this study therefore was to explore and overcome the limitations identified as above, and enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of ODFs’ support to learning. Using a task centered design approach; the required features were developed, and implemented in a working prototype called eQuake (electronic Question answer knowledge environment). eQuake is a shared online discussion forum system developed as an add-on to a well-known open source e-learning platform (Moodle). This system was intended for use among interinstitutional students in New Zealand tertiary institutions that teach similar courses. The improved interface functionalities of eQuake are expected to enhance learning support in terms of widening communication among users, increasing knowledge base, providing existing matching answer(s) quickly to students, and exposing students to multiple perspectives. This study considers such improvements to ODF interfaces as vital to enable users to enjoy the benefits of technology-mediated environment. The perceived usefulness and ease-of-use of improved features in eQuake were evaluated using a quantitative experimental research method. The evaluation was conducted at three tertiary institutions in New Zealand, and the overall results indicated positive response, although some suggestions for improvement have been made in the evaluation. This thesis presents a review of the related literature, describes the design and development of a user interface, followed by its implementation in eQuake, and a description of the evaluation. The thesis concludes with recommendations for better interface design of ODFs and provides suggestions for future research in this area.

Learning text talk online : Collaborative learning in asynchronous text based discussion forums

Liljeström, Monica January 2010 (has links)
The desire to translate constructivist and sociocultural approaches to learning in specific learning activities is evident in most forms of training at current, not least in online education. Teachers worldwide are struggling with questions of how to create conditions in this fairly new realm of education for learners to contribute to the development of a good quality in their own and others' learning. Collaboration in forms of text talk in asynchronous, text based forums (ADF) is often used so students can participate at the location and time that suits them best given the other aspects of their life situation. But previous research show how collaboration in forms of text talk do not always evolve in expected quality, and how participation sometimes can be so low that no discussions at all take place. Perhaps it is time to move on and make use of the variety of user-friendly audio-visible technologies that offers conditions for collaboration similar to those in the physical environment? Is there any point to use ADF for collaboration, beyond the flexible opportunity for participation it allows? If so, why, how and under what conditions are it worthwhile to use ADF for tasks meant to be worked collaboratively on? These questions were the starting point of the studies in this thesis that was researched through two case studies involving different techniques and data samples of various natures, with the aim to understand more about collaborative text talk. The research approach differs from the vast majority of studies in the research field of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) where many studies currently are conducted by analysis of quantifiable data. The first case study was conducted in the context of non-formal learning in Swedish Liberal Adult Education online, and the second in the context of higher education online in Sweden. The studies in the thesis were made on basis of socio-cultural theory and empirical studies. Empirical data was collected from questionnaires, interviews and texts created by students participating in tasks that they jointly resolved through text talk. Some results were brought back to the students for further explanation of the results. Findings from data analysis were triangulated with other results and with sociocultural theory. The results indicate that students can create knowledge relevant to their studies through text talk, but can feel restrained or dismiss the activity as irrelevant if important conditions are lacking.  Collaboration through text talk makes individual resources accessible in a specific place where it can be observed and its validity for the purpose of the task evaluated by others. Students with good insight in what they are supposed to accomplish seem be able to consult relevant guidance for this evaluation, from teachers, textbooks, scientific articles and other valid experiences important to their studies, and thereby contribute to learning of the quality they studies are meant to produce. Text talk also increases teachers’ possibilities to identify what the guidance the study group needs when evaluating the gathered resources and through their own active participation provide support in the students “zone of proximal development”. Contributions offered to the CSCL research field is the identifications of important mechanisms related to learning collaboratively through text talk, and the use of case study methodology as inspiration for others to try also these kinds of strategies to capture online learning.

Improving effectiveness of dialogue in learning communities : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Ph. D. in Information Systems at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Yang, Jingyu January 2009 (has links)
In a learning community, conventional discussion forums are integral to webbased interventions in traditional classrooms as well as on-line learning environments. Despite popular belief that they are a great success in fostering deep and meaningful discussions and support active learning; research has found that there are millions of messages posted by users to express such an opinion, but it is hard to be directly delivered to all users. Finally there are millions of postings in databases across the country stored away and never reused. This thesis introduces a PhD student’s current research work. It proposes a distributed intelligent discussion forum system dedicated to supporting both students and teachers. The system is developed with the primary goal of reducing the number of problems associated with conventional discussion forum systems in web-based environments and improving the effectiveness of dialogue between students with each other and with teachers so that it can enhance each individual student’s ability to share and learn knowledge.

The selection of criteria for the information analysis during the participation evaluation process, in discussion forums of distance courses, is a major challenge. There are many variables to consider in this process, in addition to the subjectivity inherent in the analysis carried out by the instructor, which is subject to human error. Instructors, generally, do not have at their disposal all the resources necessary, thus, the use of methodologies or tools that can help them with this process are necessary. Facing this demand, and after performing a study of the major qualitative/quantitative indicators used by distance education teachers, we developed a framework for the analysis of the student participation in the forums. The aim of this framework is to support the decision-making process, by providing a more effective mechanism to measure the quantity and quality of interactions, capable of adjusting itself to the traditional methodology adopted by each teacher. The validation of this framework was performed by the administration of questionnaires that surveyed the opinion of active teachers in the distance learning area, and by the execution of case studies involving the assessment of the accuracy of instances of this framework for calculating the participation grade of students. The study involved the development of an Expert System, for the treatment and processing of the data, using similarity functions to perform, semi-automatically, the assessment of the content of the students' messages. Thus, it was possible to confront the calculated participation grades with the grades assigned by the teacher using the traditional approach. The results showed that, in three out of the five classes observed, it was not possible to verify the existence of statistically significant differences between the performance of both the approaches studied. A study of the accuracy and correlation shows that, in all the cases analyzed, there is a strong relationship between the data, and the average error was less than 3%, demonstrating the applicability of the proposed framework to the assessment of student participation in forums.

Teaching practices in online education : tutoring Program of Continuing Formation in Media in Education.

Oliveira, Carmen Lúcia de Araújo Paiva 31 October 2009 (has links)
Among the teachers functions in online education, the tutoring plays an important role. The tutor establishes the closest relations with the student, mediating the pedagogical actions which are developed in the online course, with in order to achieve the principles of autonomy and learning, contributing to the creation of collaborative learning spaces, permeated by the interactivity and affection. This research focuses on the role of tutors in the Continued Training Programme for Educational Media searching for the improvement in the practice of tutoring since the studies of practice and the individuals who practice them can contribute to understanding and better structuring of this expanding area. This study aimed to verify the contribution of tutors to promote interactivity and building emotional bonds through the forum interface, as constitutive elements of learning communities in the basic cycle of the Media in Education Programme, in its first offer in Alagoas. The methodology used was case study, and data collecting involved multiple sources of evidence such as questionnaires, interviews and consultations. In the research achieved revise of literature, procedures for data collection, tabulation and analysis of data collected. The results showed that the performance of the tutors was very positive, but there are aspects that need improvement in order to have a truly interactive feature of a learning community, and reach the goal of collaborative learning in online education.

The overall objective was to investigate "if" and "how" the Internet's potential for human interaction was used by the candidates and coalitions in recent presidential campaigns in the Southern Cone and "if" and "how far" the interactive tools on websites electoral were used to strengthen ties with the electorate during political campaigns and increase the quality of democratic processes. In this thesis we seek to allow two levels of analysis: the formal structure of the website and political action that it develops. We analyze the logic of the candidates' campaign coordination in the use of discussion forums for government proposals, the constraints and incentives to encourage participation of ordinary citizens and the level of control exercised, and on the other hand, the way they interacted with Internet campaigns, with candidates and each other from these tools, the form and content of discursive exchanges held there and the nature of the proposals that resulted from this interaction. We start from the assumption that the availability of online discussion forums create an opportunity structure that can increase the possibility of political action of ordinary citizens to communicate their preferences, perform inputs, participate in the construction of political projects, as well as compel the candidates to conceive with more clearly their political platforms. However, the type of product is the result of the design of the interface and how the Internet and using the candidate technology, rather than a pre-determined by it, ie, depends on how the rules are articulated objective, strategies election, the political interest and the ability of the actors involved. We tested six corollaries specific empirical contexts and concrete objects of our investigation were the platforms for discussion and collaborative construction of government programs of four presidential candidates from Argentina, Chile and Brazil during the 2007 elections, 2009 and 2010, respectively, and the corpus of empiricalresearch in 2727 totaled posts analyzed. For purposes of this study, we performed a composition techniques that resulted in a specific methodological apparatus, including observation of interactions mediated by the computer, data collection and content analysis. The model consists of a first effort to develop a methodological research strategy discussion forums established in the electoral environment of websites. The evaluation of the quality of the discussions was undertaken according to eight dimensions of analysis based on methodological parameters DQI - Discourse Quality Index (Constraints and incentives for participation, inclusiveness and diversity, reciprocity debate, mutual respect, Identification, Degree of heterogeneity, thematization and effectiveness of content and interactive interface), which were operationalized into indicators, qualitative and quantitative.

Emphasizes the participation of professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists and occupational therapists composing teams of Basic Health Units, following the logic of supporter's matrix in mental health. This way of organizing the work process leads to the approximation of health workers with mental health needs of the users of the Primary Health Care and moving towards a broader understanding of health care in general. It is known that there are mental health's forums in each health district of Campinas created to construct and follow mental health's projects that is composed by professionals of Health Centers, Centers for Psychosocial Support and reference services. Considering the principles of Public Policy for the area of mental health, this research aims to examine the role of these forums in the formulation of the model care and the implementation of healthcare practices to the user. This study was performed in theorical field of Institutional Analysis, by the named 'role analysis', where the empirical analysis consists of documents, observations and interviews with mental health's institutional supporters of health districts of Campinas. This research was intended to build systematic information on how certain processes discussed in these forums reverberates in professional's daily practices, in customer service and networking care / Mestrado / Ciências Sociais em Saúde / Mestra em Saúde Coletiva

Siljefors, Kristina, Amanuel, Natnael, Blixt, Stina January 2017 (has links)
Title: The “reality” of violence: a study of how participants of the internet forum Familjeliv talk about domestic violence against women, with a discourse psychological approach. The purpose of this study was to examine how participants in the discussion forum Familjeliv reasoned and constructed the reality of men's violence against women in intimate relationships. The data used in the study comes from 20 discussion-threads on the forum where violence in intimate relationships has been discussed based on the participants' experiences, questions and findings. The data has then been analyzed on the basis of  discourse psychology and feminist theory. The focus of the analysis was to examine the language that the participants used. To do this, two analytical tools were used: positioning and interpretative repertoires. The result showed a variety of reasoning and constructions regarding the definition of violence, the responsibility of the women and men, and whether men's violence against women should be considered a social problem or not. The majority of the data that was  analyzed highlighted the woman's responsibility in the relationship, some of whom also saw it as both the man and the woman's responsibility while some left the entire responsibility to the man. The result also showed that men's violence against women is seen as a societal problem by many who participated in the discussions. At the same time, there were some who considered that men's violence against men was a major problem, and therefore thought that this problem should be given more attention than men's violence against women. In order to develop support efforts for women exposed to violence in intimate relationships, knowledge about the public's perception of the phenomenon is required. As a professional, this knowledge also increases the understanding of how exposed women are treated in everyday meetings with other individuals.
