The aim of this Master thesis was to examine how libraries at Swedish colleges and universities make Open Access journals in physics available to users. We examined if, where, and how the 50 Open Access journals that are listed in the Directory of Open Access (DOAJ) under the heading Physics (General) were made available to the public at 19 Swedish colleges and universities. We also examined possible patterns regarding qualities in the Open Access journals and to what extent the libraries made them available. For this descriptive statistic was used. The selection of library portals that were included in the study were those Swedish colleges and universities that teach physics. The searches that form the basis for the results of the study were performed during the period 30/09/2008 -06/12/2008. The results of the study show that a majority of the libraries made at least 94% of the Open Access-journals available to users, and that this was achieved mainly by journal and/or e-journal lists. A majority of the journal lists were generated by SFX, a system libraries can use to make different e-journal packages available to the public, including the package that consists of the Open Access journals listed by DOAJ. This practice might explain the results of the study. Previous research that focuses on how e-journals are made available to the public show that the consensus regarding these resources previously was that they should be made available through library catalogues. This practice now seems to be changing, probably due to the fact that making e-journals available in journal lists instead of library catalogues demands less economic resources. These were the most consistent tendencies found in the material.

The main aim in this thesis is to analyse the attitudes of fivearchaeologists at the Department of History, University ofGothenburg, on the subject of scholarly publishing injournals. The investigation has been led by a set of questionsconcerning the motives and conditions for submitting articlesto scholarly journals.The primary way of collecting emprical data is based onsemistructured qualitative interviews. To get a broaderpicture, the publishing patterns of the archaeologists at theDepartment of History were mapped using the databaseGöteborgs universitets publikationer (GUP). A documentstudy was also conducted.The analysis uses Björk & Holmström’s The net value ofsubmission model to highlight which factors are assumed toinfluence an author when submitting to a scientific journal.This model is reduced and developed to six aspects whichmore or less effect the decision making of the author whenpublishing an article in a scientific journal. These six aspectsare: culture, strategy, medium/form, readership, prestige andperformance.The results of the investigation show that a set of factorsinfluence the publishing decision. As a disciplinetraditionally rooted in the humanities, the archaeologists atthe Department of History have established a scientific wayof publishing. Bibliometri och humaniora : exemplet Slavoj Žižek / Bibliometrics and the humanities : Slavoj Žižek as an example

The purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis is to explore the useability of bibliometric analysis on scientists of the humanities. This is accomplished by doing a case study on philosopher Slavoj Žižek. The work process and the results the case study is able to produce and the limits of these results are then analysed and discussed.In the case study all scientific articles in English published 1987-2010 citing Žižek were analysed. The material was gathered from the databases provided by Thomson Reuters through the Web of Science.Most references to Žižek were published in Cultural Critique, a transdisciplinary journal published in the USA. Organizational behaviourist De Cock had the most references, but literature studies was the most common institution among the authors. The 15 most cited works are monographs, and the most cited is The sublime object of ideology. The most cocited works are by psychoanalyst Lacan or works about his theories.The results show that an analysis of a researcher of the humanities using bibliometric methods provide us with relevant information. However, this information is not as complete as when applied on a scientist in the natural sciences. The main reason for this is the differences in publication behaviour and the lack of relevant material in the databases covering the humanities.Several suggestions for further research is given. These concern more in depth studies of the citations of Žižek, comparative studies using other databases, and the changes in publication patterns within the humanities. / Program: Bibliotekarie

The purpose of this study is to analyse three different innovations and the impact they had on the Swedish Magazine Industry 1995-2015. The framework for this thesis is the theories of Joseph Schumpeter on innovations but also many of his successors who over time have applied his theories and methods on various industries. The innovations in this thesis are (i) computerisation of production, on the effect desktop publishing software had on the magazine industry; (ii) lowering of VAT on magazines from 25 percent to 6 percent; (iii) the diffusion of internet and the effect it had on magazine industry. Using the theories on developments block by Erik Dahmén the thesis concludes that these three innovations can be sorted in the same development block: the process of the development of the CPU (Central Processing Unit), a technology required for each of these important media innovations.

Mycket av den forskning som finns om typografi är gjord för nästan hundra år sen. Sen dess har mycket facklitteratur presenterats i ämnet. I dagens medielandskap är det många tidskrifter som behöver förändring för att hålla sig aktuella. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att undersöka vad det finns för typografiska kriterier vid redaktionell redesign i den svenska tidskriftsbranschen. Syftet uppnåddes genom jämförelse av insamlad data från intervjuer, empiri från facklitteratur och teorier från forskning. Fem semistrukturerade telefonintervjuer genomfördes med representanter från branschen. Analysen ledde till olika slutsatser med olika mycket stöd från forskning och facklitteratur. Språkstöd och valmöjligheter för typsnitt blev generaliserbara kriterier då behovet för olika fonter beskrivs som viktigt av alla parter. Teckengrad ska inte generaliseras såsom facklitteraturen visar, då det ansågs som något relativt inom både forskning och bransch. Negativ text och radlängd visade sig vara typografiska aspekter som branschen valde att inte ta hänsyn till trots tydliga regler i forskning och facklitteratur. Vid val av typografi förhöll sig branschen ofta mer till känsla och ett typsnitts karaktär än till krav på funktionalitet. Författarna kom också fram till att forskning och facklitteratur menar att redesign bör prioriteras, men att detta inte alltid genomfördes då kundens önskemål i slutändan var det som avgjorde vad som skulle göras.

Uppsala universitet: Inst. för idé- och lärdomshistoria, C-uppsats, Vårtermin, 2022. 1970-talet präglades av fler samhälleliga förändringar än vad gemeneman idag förmodligenkänner till. Det är ett årtionde många tar förgivet och ändå skulle framväxten av olikafeministiska rörelser och populärkulturen skapa en social förändring i västvärlden både under1970-talet och framåt. För att konkretisera och påvisa dessa förändringar över tid ser jag idetta arbete till kvinnliga artister och deras porträttering i svenska populärkulturella tidskrifterunder 1970- och 1980-talet. Jag ser till det kvinnliga rockbandet The Runaways för attundersöka det av andra vågens feminism präglade 1970-talet och artisterna Joan Jett och Lita Ford, som tidigare verkat i bandet innan de övergick till solokarriärer, för att undersöka feminismens succesiva kommersialisering och tidskrifternas professionalisering under 1980-talet. Genom både bild- och textanalyser går det att konstatera att andra vågens feminism utmanas inom populärkulturen genom band som The Runaways. Något som tog sig i uttryck iden mansdominerade branschen genom ambivalenta kommentarer och utpekande avskillnader som kön. Feminismen och konceptet av den kvinnliga artisten verkar sedan haanammats under 1980-talet till priset av att de kvinnliga artisterna själva fick framhäva sinfemininitet, då det inte var uttalat men ändå förväntat. En image skulle säljas in, vilket också skulle synas i följande årtionden då kvinnligheten och feminismen inom populärkulturen tydligt redan var kommersialiserad.

I denna studie utreder jag om hur branded content mottas av målgruppen för digitala tidskrifter inom populärkultur genom en framträdande teknik in webb-personalisering, hyper-personalisering. Målgruppen för denna studie är unga opinionsbildare som konsumerar innehåll från digitala tidskrifter som exempelvis Nöjesguiden. Branded content, sponsrat innehåll, är innehåll som skapas för att ett varumärke skall förknippas med en kreatörs målgrupp. Alltså kan ett varumärke be Nöjesguiden skapa redaktionellt innehåll som bör tilltala målgruppen för den digitala tidskriften, och på så sätt skall målgruppen få en ny uppfattning eller fortsatt positiv syn på varumärket. Hyperpersonalisering är en teknik som appliceras för att kunna rikta innehåll, tjänster eller produkter mot individer inom en målgrupp med träffsäker relevans. Tekniken kräver en stor mängd insamlad social data och det blir därför intressant att föra en diskussion kring hur målgruppen reagerar på att man kan genomföra en sådan enorm insamling av data. Även en etisk diskussion kring tekniken förs i rapporten. För kunna besvara om mottagligheten för branded content genom hyper-personalisering är god eller ej genomfördes en kvantitativ studie i form av en enkät och en kvalitativ studie med ett användarexperiment. Enkäten besvarades av 87 personer från målgruppen och fyra personer från målgruppen fick vara med och uppleva användarexperimentet. Valet att genomföra ett flertal metoder grundar sig i att kunna ha möjlighet till en bred diskussion kring problemformuleringen. / In this study I am investigating how branded content is received by the target audience for digital periodicals in popular culture through a prominent technology in web personalization, hyper-personalization. The target group for this study is young opinion builders who consume content from digital periodicals such as “Nöjesguiden”. Branded content is content that is created for a brand to be associated with a creator’s audience. Thus, a brand might ask “Nöjesguiden” to create editorial content that should appeal the target audience for the digital magazine and so should the target audience get a new impression or a continued positive view of the brand. Hyper-personalization is a technology applied to target content, services or products to individuals within a target audience with accurate relevance. The technology requires a large amount of collected social data and it will therefore be interesting to conduct a discussion on how the target group reacts to that you can implement such an enormous collection of data. An ethical discussion about the technology is held in the report. In order to answer the susceptibility of branded content through hyper-personalization is good or not, a quantitative study in the form of a survey and a qualitative study with a user experiment was conducted. 87 people answered the survey from the target group and four people from the target group were taking part of the user experience. The choice of having a multiple number of methods was fundamental for having a broad discussion about the issue.

The aim of the study is to delve deeper into how the press portrays the librarian profession through two different time periods and take a closer look at the discourses related to work tasks represented in the media to see how the profession has changed and why. The empirical material is from Biblioteksbladet, published in 1923 and 2023, and the study analyses the differences from a hundred-year progress in the representation of the profession in the press. These papers are analysed with discourse analysis to explain power relations, changes in social practices and society, and the context of the texts to explain why these changes have happened. The result of the study shows that there has been a change in the profession, as more tasks have been assigned to the librarians, which brings new expectations and changes in the work-related discourses in Biblioteksbladet and how they express themselves to the librarians. Furthermore, the profession changes with the society it is centred in to be of use to its users.

Borgarklassens diskreta stil : Smak och samhällsklass i heminredningstidskriften "Sköna Hem" / The Discreet Style of the Bourgeouisie : Taste and Social Class in the Interior Design Magazine "Sköna Hem"

Within media and communications studies, questions of taste have often been associated with the dichotomy of high versus popular culture. The French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu has also used mass media products in his studies of class determined tastes and dispositions. In this paper the author uses the theoretical framwork of Bourdieu to examine aspects of social class and legitimate taste in the interior design magazine "Sköna Hem", a market leading magazine within it's genre of lifestyle magazines in Sweden. A specific type of feature article, where a real-life home is portrayed, is studied using the critical discourse analysis of Norman Fairclough. The homes portrayed are predominantly affluent and display elements of conspicuous consumtion as mediated through legitimate taste and cultural capital. Common traits are identified in writing style as well as the furnishings of the homes portrayed. Deviations from the norm are also discussed. The author also discusses text production with an emphasis on the impact of informal chriteria of quality on the selection of homes portrayed. The results show that the aesthetic ideals represented in the magazine correlate well to the "aesthetic disposition" described by Bourdieu as closely tied to haute bourgeois habitus. Shared discoursive elements include an emphasis on form as a characteristic of quality, an attitude of detachment as a way of relating to the objects of culture and a distancing from questions of economic neccessity. These elements are projected rhetorically through modality markers of high affinity, leaving the impression of a general defintion of style and beauty. Given that these results are representative of lifestyle journalism as a whole, the author interprets this as a hegemonizing process wherein a subjective defintion of taste typical of the haute bourgeois comes to represent an absolute. She proposes that this contributes to a pathologizing of powerless groups in society.
