The aim of this work is explanation of the concept of homegrown terrorism based on an analysis of selected terrorist attacks; and creates a definition for this completely new phenomenon. For the processing of the topic I chose a comparative case study method, which is applied to the exploration of three terrorist attacks (terrorist attacks in London 2005, attacks in editorial office of Charlie Hebdo in 2015 and terrorist attacks in Paris 2015). Basic investigated dependent variable is homegrown terrorism and the independent variables are concepts "belonging" and "autonomy". Variables that are connected to the concept of "belonging" include the origin of the attackers and links to the Western countries, the concept of "autonomy" is linked to the independence of the attackers to terrorist groups abroad and self-training of the attackers and finally motives of the attackers include the role of religion, the social situation of the attackers and hatred of invaders towards the West. The variables above are applied to each terrorist attack separately in the form of table data. Each dependent and independent variable may be positive or negative. According to this research, I found that each particular attack was different in certain characteristics from the previous one and therefore it is difficult to...

[pt] ENTENDEU OU QUER QUE EU DESENHE?: UM ESTUDO SOBRE A PERCEPÇÃO DOS LEITORES SOBRE OS LIVROS ILUSTRADOS DE FICCÇÃO EM PROSA DIRIGIDOS AO PÚBLICO ADULTO / [en] GOT IT OR DO YOU WANT ME TO DRAW A PICTURE FOR YOU?: A STUDY OF THE READER S PERCEPTION ABOUT ILUSTRATED FICTION PROSE BOOKS TARGETED AT THE ADULT AUDIENCE

BRUNA SPINOLA SADDY 18 October 2016 (has links)
[en] This dissertation s research aims to investigate, comprehend and describe adult readers current perceptions about the participation of illustration in fiction prose books aimed at a adult audience and the market s supply. Based on the assumption that issues related to attribution of values and hierarchization between the written content and the image content maintain the current paradigm of absence of illustration in fiction prose books aimed at adult audiences, this dissertation s methodology covers: a retrospective of the history of illustrated books based on the studies of Fischer (2006), Powers (2011) and Chartier (1998); a discussion about the social pressures that act upon the adult reader gathering concepts of the works of Rancière (2009), Bourdieu (1998) and Nikilajeva and Scott (2011); a quantitative research done in a book store about the incidence of illustrations in the current market supply, based on Gil (2002) – in which is found that the majority of fiction prose books aimed at adults do not have illustrations – and a questionnaire with more than 400 adult readers, based on the Bardin s methodology (2002), in with is found that there is a possible demand or niche for adult illustrated fiction books, as well great social acceptance of the adults who like illustrated books, thought there races of attribution of values and hierarchization were found. Ultimately, it proposes a discussion about the designer s role, as an influenced person and as an influence himself, based on the thoughts of Farbiarz (2008) and Findeli (1994), and about the book and its fruition as a wicked problem, based in the ideas of Cardoso (2012), Rittel and Webber (1973).

När näthatet blir ett hot mot demokratin : En kvalitativ studie om ledarskribenters upplevelser av näthat / When online hate becomes a threat to democracy : A qualitative study of editorial writers experiences of online hate

Andersson, Josefin January 2016 (has links)
Titel: When online hate becomes a threat to democracy - a qualitative study about editorial writers experiences of online hate The aim of this study has been to, through an intersectional gender perspective, identify how interviewed editorial writers at Swedish newspapers experiences, and are affected by, online hate and how the effects of online hate could have consequences for the democratic function of journalism. This has been done through qualitative interviews with eight editorial writers from different Swedish newspapers, four female and four male, two of which has another ethnic background than Swedish. The theoretical framework for the study has been intersectional gender theory, the theory of participatory culture and Sara Ahmed’s theory of the link between emotion and rhetoric. The results of the study are categorised into four different themes: ”Racist online hate”, ”Sexist online hate”, ”Emotional online hate” and ”Consequences of online hate”. The results show that female editorial writers with another ethnic background than Swedish are getting an disproportionate amount of racist and sexist online hate because of their gender and ethnicity. Further, the study shows that female editorial writers are exposed to sexism which is something that is absent in the online hate directed towards the male writers The male editorial writers tends to reduce their experiences of online hate, even though some of them are or have been exposed to aggravated libel, on the grounds that female colleagues are worse affected. The study shows that subjects that trigger online hate are integration, feminism, national security and Romany beggars. The consequences of online hate that the editorial writers identifies are very individual. The ones that are worst exposed tell stories about personal consequences such as fear of safety in public, need of protected identities and self-censorship. The ones that don’t consider themselves very affected by online hate talk more about societal consequences such as the threat of online haters tone becoming the norm on the internet, the need of  common guidelines for social media, and a threat against the freedom of speech. The conclusion of the study is that the experiences of online hate is very individual for the editorial writers, but there are clear structures that shows that women and persons with another ethnic background that Swedish are exposed to sexist and racist online hate. Some subject are triggering for online hate and there are consequences, such as self-censorship, that can be seen as threats to democracy and freedom of speech. Keywords: social media, online hate, hate speech, editorial writer, journalism, media, democracy, freedom of speech, gender, race, ethnicity, participatory culture, sexism, racism, emotional rhetoric

Broken News: Market Segmentation and Selective Exposure in Online News

Lee, Deidra 07 November 2013 (has links)
Research has revealed that more Americans than ever are turning to the World Wide Web as their primary source for news and information instead of legacy media outlets such as printed newspapers and magazines and broadcast news. As more and more people rely on the Internet as a primary source for news, it is important to analyze the characteristics and content of online news to expose and correct problems associated with the practices that inform its production and presentation. There are several longstanding practices in the American journalistic tradition that have been adapted to the online news environment. The practices of market segmentation and gatekeeping are two such practices. To date, few studies have explored how internet news coverage differs when the same story is altered to address the perceived interests of specific target audiences. This goal of this study was to collect and examine the characteristics of news stories presented on the homepages of three news websites—the Huffington Post, Huffington Post Black Voices and News One—to arrive at conclusions about the similarities and differences in how news content is reported to a general audience and to an African-American audience. This exploratory study used both Web sphere analysis and qualitative analysis to examine the collected homepage news stories. It used the results of the analyses to explore the possible effects continued market segmentation and selective exposure online could have on discourse in the public sphere. The study found that the legacy media practice of market segmentation was evident when online news reporting on targeted and untargeted news website homepages was compared. The study also revealed that the traditional role of the Black Press in legacy media has been resurrected in new media and is evident on news websites produced by African-Americans, for an African-American audience. Additionally, a qualitative examination of online news coverage of President Barack Obama’s 2012 State of the Union address and the death of Trayvon Martin revealed that the targeted audience influences the editorial slant through which news websites report stories.

La fabrique médiatique des élections biélorusses : la lecture nationale de l’événement et les représentations transnationales à l’épreuve des dynamiques coopératives / The media construction of the Belarussian elections : the national reading of the event and its transnational representations in a context of cooperative dynamics

Buduchev, Vitaly 20 February 2019 (has links)
This work focuses on the journalists from Russian and French daily newspapers who cover political events on the Belarussian territory. Their own national and transnational representations, are at the center of our questioning. The way their cooperative interactions elaborate the Russian and French audience's perception of the Belarusian elections is another aspect of this work. Their narrative, framed by each newspaper's editorial project for which they work is the third aspect this thesis explores. Our goal is to identify the common values that tie together the different actors of the world of information in Minsk, which is motivated by foreign reporters. Furthermore, we shed light on inner dynamics within the groups that take part in the mutual production of information, which create distinct communities that make up this world and are united around their own objectives, their own identities, and their own narrative. This is where the matter of borders between these communities lies and allows us to reveal the foreign reporters' team and the Belarusian dissident community. This work also interrogates the structures of both communities, the relationships between their respective members, their inner conventions, the relations between colleagues and individuals outside of the group. Finally, we explore the results of such cooperation, which are in line with the editorial projects of the Russian and French newspapers. Thus we analyze the expression of professional logistics on an editorial scale that transpires through the enunciation of the different press titles.
