Between a rock and hard place : space, gender and hierarchy in British gangland filmWilliams, Sally Tatham Robertson January 2011 (has links)
A principal aim of this research has been to establish the capacity of British Gangland film to articulate its era of production through the cinematic interpretation of contemporary concerns and anxieties in narratives relating to the criminal underworld. In order to do so, the study has concentrated on the analysis of space, gender and hierarchy within representative generic texts produced between 1945 and the present. The thesis is divided into three sections: the first offers a general overview of British Gangland film from the 65 years under discussion with the aim of identifying recurring generic patterns and motifs. The second and third sections are more specifically focused, their chapters examining the narrative significance and development of the male and the female protagonist respectively. Within the films under discussion, the relationship between these protagonists and their environment represents a fundamental generic component, resulting in an emphasis on space and place. Space within these narratives is inherently territorial, and thus irrevocably bound up with hierarchies of power. The predominantly urban locations in which the narratives are set represent a twilight world, a demi-monde, which is rarely neutral but dominated by the patriarchal order structuring the notion of ‘Gangland’. Such spaces are therefore inextricably linked with gender, hierarchy, and dynamic power relations. Whilst it would have been possible to explore each of these areas in isolation through specifically relevant theoretical perspectives, their interdependence is central to this study. Consequently, a holistic theoretical approach has facilitated analysis of the symbiotic relationship between the three key elements of space, gender and hierarchy and the processes involved in the generation of meaning: this has resulted in a reading of British Gangland film as cultural artefact, reflecting its circumstances of production.

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka relationen mellan svensk gangsterrap och kriminalitet hos unga män i svenska socioekonomiskt utsatta områden. Syftet är även att studera om hur kvinnosynen ser ut bland de unga männen och hur den speglas genom musiken. Studien genomförs med hjälp av semistrukturerade intervjuer där åtta olika unga män bosatta i socioekonomiska områden intervjuas och utgår från fyra sociologiska teorier: Sociala band, stigma, kapitalbegreppen och intersektionalitet. . Resultatet visade på att det finns en viss relation till gangsterrapen och de unga männens syn på kriminalitet och kvinnor. / The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between Swedish gangster rap and crime among young men in Swedish socio-economically vulnerable areas. The purpose is also to study what the view of women looks like among young men and how it is reflected through music. The study is conducted with the help of semi-structured interviews where eight different young men living in socio-economic areas are interviewed and are based on four sociological theories: social ties, stigma, capital concepts and intersectionality. . The results showed that there is a certain relationship to the gangster rap and the young men's views on crime and women.

Studiens syfte var att undersöka relationerna kopplade till svenska gangsterrappare och musikindustrin och på så sätt identifiera viktiga aktörer i nätverket. Ytterligare en del av syftet var att studera hur gangsterrapparnas eventuella gängtillhörighet speglades i nätverket. Detta gjordes genom en social nätverksanalys av data från Spotify. Studien utgick från två teoretiska perspektiv, vilka var teorin om differentiella associationer och social nätverksanalys. Resultatet visade att det främst var ursprungsaktörerna som hade högst centralitet, men att även flera skivbolag hade höga värden. Av detta kunde slutsatsen dras att skivbolagen hade en viktig roll i att binda samman nätverket. Angående gängmiljön kunde en viss polarisering ses, där en av de två gängkonflikterna som visade sig i materialet även speglades inom musikindustrin, medan detta inte var lika tydligt i den andra. Av detta kunde slutsatsen dras att gängkonflikterna inte alltid speglas inom musikindustrin. / The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships linked to Swedish gangster rappers and the music industry, and thus identify important actors in the network. The aim was also to examine how the possible gang connections of the gangster rappers were reflected in the network. The method that was used was social network analysis and the data was collected from Spotify. The study was based on two theoretical perspectives, which were the theory of differential associations and social network analysis. The results showed that it was mainly the original actors that had the highest centrality values, but that several record companies also had high values. From this, the conclusion could be drawn that the record companies had an important role in binding the network together. Regarding the gang environment, polarization could be seen to some extent, where one of the two gang conflicts that appeared in the material was also reflected in the music industry, while this was not as evident in the other. From this, the conclusion could be drawn that the gang conflicts are not always reflected in the music industry.

台灣立法者對於多數人犯罪，所採取的解決方式是訂立「組織犯罪防制條例」及「檢肅流氓條例」加以因應。組織犯罪防制法於1996年訂立以來，迄今已逾10年，從未見任何文獻探討該立法之成效如何。本文參照聯合國打擊組織性犯罪公約、德國與日本對於多數人犯罪的立法模式，並檢驗我國立法院公報及檢索相關司法判決後，逐步歸納上述各國的立法模式並檢討其利弊。最後提出兩種立法模式，以期為未來修法之參考。 / When Legislators facing multiple crimes/group crimes, their approach to resolve this matter is to enforce the“Organized Crime Prevention Act” and “Gangster Prevention Act”. Organized Crime Prevention Act has been enacted since 1996, but for the past years, no one has examined whether the effects of the Acts correspond with the legislative purposes. In this Article, by referring to“United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime”, as well as German and Japanese legislation mode on multiple crimes/group crimes, also examining “The Legislative Yuan Gazette of Republic of China” and the relevant judgments of the judicial organ, the author takes steps to categorize the above-mentioned legislations from different countries and compares the advantages and disadvantages thereof. Finally the author reproduces two suggestions on legislative models, which hopefully can be used as reference for future legislation amendment of the above mentioned Acts.

The main intention with this study has been to analyze which social identities and versions of the world young people construct within Swedish gangster rap and how to see this from a child cultural perspective. In addition, my goal was to analyze what functions the rappers and their songs assume in relation to their young audience. The analysis shows that the positions young rappers occupy in the songs are strongly linked to their need to gain status within their group. In addition, it becomes a peer culture where they create and share their identities and versions of the world. It is also through music that they question the authority of adults. It can also be seen that their poor childhood means that crime becomes, apart from rap, the only way they perceive to rise economically and socially. But the price for these achievements is high.

This document contains a meta-commentary on the article that I co-authored with Dr. Corry Cropper entitled Breaking the Duel's Rules: Brantôme, Mérimée, and Melville, that will be published in the next issue of Essays in French Literature and Culture, and an annotated bibliography of primary and secondary sources featuring summaries and important quotes dealing with duels, honor, honor codes, cheating, historical causality, chance, and sexuality. Also, several examples of film noir are cited with brief summaries and key events noted. The article we wrote studies two instances of cheating in duels: one found in Brantôme's Discours sur les duels and the other in Prosper Mérimée's Chronique du règne de Charles IX, and the traditional, as well as anti-causal, repercussions they had. Melville's Le Deuxième souffle is also analyzed with regards to the Gaullist Gu Minda and the end of the aristocratic codes of honor that those of his generation dearly respected but that were overcome by the commercial world of republican law and order.
