Duarte, Ulisses Corrêa January 2016 (has links)
This multi-sited ethnography analyzes three distinct carnival poles, through the exchanges circuits established among them. The main purpose of the thesis is to comprehend how the different cultural configurations in carnivals of Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro, the Pampas region (in three cities, Uruguaiana in southern Brazil, Paso de Los Libres in Argentina and Artigas in Uruguay) and a Samba School in the Notting Hill Carnival (London/UK) communicate and involve themselves in intercultural relations, globalism and hybridism between carnivals. The relations among the carnivals allow the dissemination of their competitive productions, the circulation of persons and objects that cross borders, based on the dimension of translocality. These carnivals are intertwined and dialogue with the Rio carnival in exchanging and negotiating circuits, promoting encounters, connections, intense professionals circulation, material flows, knowledge and expertise between among its local contexts.

A Third Way for Contemporary Turkey in-between the West and East

Yılmaz, Emre Can January 2019 (has links)
After seven months of diplomatic crisis following the shooting down of Russian fighter jet by the Turkish Armed Forces, Turkish-Russian relations entered into the process of reconciliation in June 2016. Few weeks later, Turkey faced with a coup attempt (July 15, 2016) which was a crucial turning point in Turkey's repositioning itself in the international politics. Deteriorating relations with the West and rapprochement with Russia have brought along debates with regards to Eurasianism as an alternative foreign policy orientation. In this regard, this thesis is dealing with the Patriotic Party's proposed Eurasianist idea, Kemalist Eurasianism, to put forth the idea's conceptual and contextual map by analysing and interpreting the works of Doğu Perinçek, chairman of the Patriotic Party, and the party's monthly journal, Teori, within the framework of conceptual history approach. In doing so, the thesis confronts the misconception of Kemalist Eurasianism as a derivation of Russian neo-Eurasianism and argues that the idea is originated from the Kemalist revolution and left-nationalist currents of thought historically. Thus, the thesis reveals that Kemalist Eurasianism primarily is a national agenda based on Kemalist principles of nationalism, etatism and populism, and is the international extension of...

On Collapse

Constan, Lea January 2021 (has links)
This project is an active exploration of subjectivities through the medium of weaving. In a narrative illustrated with woven works, the emotional trajectory of this person of mixed cultural background through Swedish society is described. First, the work is contextualized in terms of the larger politico-cultural-discursive context, entitled the outside. It is then positioned in terms of the individual context, the inside, largely dramatized as the developments in the art of western tapestry in the past century. This culminates in the final works, three of which are presented in the final exhibition. They are entitled monads, the etymology of which, in Greek, relates to the words one, alone, or singularity. Each is a conceptual microcosm proposing a different light distribution scheme. They are imprints of alternative actualizing tendencies. There could only be one; at the end of the experiment, Schrodinger’s cat is either dead or alive. The collapse involves the very structure of the ground, and is therefore embedded directly into the weave structure. But remember, each act of observation is an irreversible disturbance to the system. In the interpretation of the primary emanation arises difference, but in which direction will the pendulum swing, and on what forces does its motion hinge? Do subjectivities follow the locality assumption? Do you produce subjectivities or do they produce you?

[en] AGENCY, STRUCTURE, COGNITION: THE INTERNATIONAL THOUGHT OF JOAQUIM NABUCO AND OLIVEIRA LIMA / [pt] AGÊNCIA, ESTRUTURA, COGNIÇÃO: O PENSAMENTO INTERNACIONAL DE JOAQUIM NABUCO E OLIVEIRA LIMA

ELIZEU SANTIAGO TAVARES DE SOUSA 26 August 2013 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this work will be to understand the international political thought of Joaquim Nabuco and Oliveira Lima through the reconstruction and systematization of the worldviews of these protagonists of the Brazilian international political thought between the decades of 1890 and 1910, period during which the debate of national modern diplomacy was, in our view, inaugurated. This dissertation will also analyze the construction of the cognitive structure that impinged on the agency of these figures. One of the hypotheses defended is the co-constitution between the Brazilian international thought and the political and diplomatic tradition. The ideas and the projects of international insertion advocated by Nabuco and Oliveira Lima would influence the way in which Brazilian diplomacy would operate, during the twentieth century, in the form of paradigms or cognitive maps. Whereas the former was the precursor of Americanism, the latter was the father of the Globalist thought in the Brazilian foreign policy.

”Sanassa maahanmuuttaja on vähän kitkerä jälkimaku”:kirjallisen elämän ylirajaistuminen 2000-luvun alun Suomessa

Nissilä, H.-L. (Hanna-Leena) 09 February 2016 (has links)
Abstract Globalization, immigration and the multiculturalization of society have had a deep impact on Finland in the last few decades. But what effect did these altered cultural-societal circumstances have on literary life in Finland in the early 2000s? The object of research in this article-based dissertation is the transnationalization of literary life in Finland. This is investigated through what is called ’new transnational literature’ in this study by means of analyzing literature published by writers with migrant backgrounds during the first decade of the 20th century in Finland. The study analyzes the reception of debut novels by Ranya ElRamly, Umayya Abu-Hanna, Zinaida Linden and Alexandra Salmela. Furthermore, it considers how this reception has implicitly defined and canonized Finnish literature, and how transnational and cross-border writers are situated in the literary field in Finland. By problematizing how to approach the transnational in literary studies, this dissertation contributes to current debates on methodological nationalism. The research material consists of works of fiction as well as texts published on internet and print media that deal with the reception of the novels. These sources are examined within the framework of cultural studies, mainly from the perspectives of close reading and sociological criticism, media studies-oriented reception theory, and the history of literature, as well as transnational approach that goes beyond national framework. This research demonstrates that approximately 90 writers with migrant backgrounds, often writing in languages other than Finnish, Swedish or Sami, have published texts in Finland in the 2000s. Although many of them have been successful, most of them have continued working without due recognition hampered by prevailing monolingualism. New transnational literary works have been placed in rigid categories, and the reception has emphasized authors’ backgrounds and national borders, thus concealing the literary dimensions and qualities of their works. New transnational literature questions the understanding of literature as nation-bound. According to this study, Finnish literary life appears to be a transnational and multi-lingual space, in which writers simultaneously belong to both transnational and national literary cultures. The significance of gender is also evident, in that women writers and their books have had a pivotal role in the transnationalization of Finnish literature. Vaikka moni on menestynyt hyvin, edelleen suurin osa työskentelee näkymättömissä erityisesti kieleen liittyvien esteiden keskellä. Vastaanotossa aineiston kirjallisuutta on aseteltu jähmeisiin kategorioihin ja kirjailijoiden maahanmuuttajuutta on tuotu esille, mikä on korostanut kansallisia rajoja ja häivyttänyt teosten kaunokirjallisia ulottuvuuksia. Uusi ylirajainen kirjallisuus on horjuttanut käsitystä kansallisesta kirjallisuudesta.

[en] ULTRA-IMPERIALISM REVISITED: A PRELIMINARY FRAMEWORK FOR INTERPRETING THE INTERNATIONAL ORDER / [pt] ULTRAIMPERIALISMO REVISITADO: UMA ESTRUTURA PRELIMINAR PARA INTERPRETAR A ORDEM INTERNACIONAL

18 November 2021 (has links)
[en] This work proposes an alternative interpretation of Donald Trump’s election to the presidency of the United States, through a rereading of Karl Kautsky’s concept of ultra-imperialism. For this, the work is supported by the Marxist literature on imperialism, on Antonio Gramsci’s and Robert Cox s theoretical contributions, and on the concept of Transnational Capitalist Class. It undertakes a historical analysis of the development of the US empire in its domestic dimension – the emergence of a hegemonic bloc around the New Deal – and external, the expansion of the hegemonic model to the world order. It is observed, through a historical and ideational analysis, the role of conservatism and neoliberalism, inside the US, in the formation of the new bloc that achieves world supremacy from the 1980s onwards. This bloc has a globalist orientation, that is, its objective is to integrate all national economies to global capitalism. It is argued that the bloc is led by transnational capitalist classes that employ state power to advance this integration, while the articulation between conservatism and neoliberalism legitimates the process. In this context, the US empire assumes the role of leading state in a cartel of advanced capitalist countries – the ultra-empire – promoting uneven integration and the persistence of relations of dependency. The contradictions of this arrangement, added to the contradictions of the globalist bloc, contributed to the rise of Donald Trump, who was able to articulate, in the elections, a challenge to the globalist agenda. In the conclusion, it is argued that the permanence of these contradictions will result in new phenomena like Trump, in the future.
