Sven-Harrys : Att leva med konsten

Uppsatsen behandlar Sven-Harrys (Konstmuseum) utifrån ett poststrukturalistiskt perspektiv, där institutionens olika delar ställs i relation till varandra samt förankras i dess olika samhälleliga kontexter och ursprung. Institutionen Sven-Harrys jämförs med en organism, i syftet att förklara dessa relationer. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att Sven-Harrys verksamhet huvudsakligen syftar till att upplösa gränserna mellan konsten och bostaden genom att kombinera olika verksamheter som sammanknyter dessa.

Funny little witches and venerable-looking wizards: a social constructionist study of the portrayal of gender in the Harry Potter series

In this study I apply social constructionism as propounded by Vivian Burr (1998) to show that although J. K. Rowling uses stereotypes in the Harry Potter series as a reflection of how gender is constructed across a wide range of societal institutions in contemporary Britain, she created complex characters who on an individual level subvert social constructs and thereby offers her readers alternatives to culturally defined concepts of gender. I explore the all-pervasive social phenomenon of gender and examine how it is constructed in present-day Britain and reflected in the series (bearing in mind that the first book was published in 1997 and the last one in 2007). My analysis of female and male characters in the books, and their interpersonal relationships, shows that Rowling's often tricky portrayal of femininities and masculinities gives us an honest view of teenagers’ lives and contemporary gender relations in an ever-changing, complex world. / English Studies / M. Siberia revealed through the travel narrative : a Russian, American and British perspective

This study examines how travelogues by the Russian author Anton Chekhov, an American, George Kennan and a British citizen, Harry de Windt, contributed towards establishing the image of Siberia towards the end of the 19th century, juxtaposing their individual views against the commonly perceived view of the region at the time. In examining the texts, a literary analysis is merged with elements of other approaches, through a strong thematic focus, centring on the cultural and ideological assumptions implied in the texts. The findings reveal that both native inhabitants and foreigners are capable of expressing a justifiable opinion on a locality, resulting in different versions of what is observed, from divergent points of view. Although the three writers in this study appear to support a negative view of Siberia, closer investigation show evidence of optimism about the eventual destiny of a region in a stage of transition. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Russian)

No Brasil da segunda metade do século XX, esses três diaristas se destacam por terem sido os primeiros a criarem uma escrita na primeira pessoa que abordava, ainda que de um modo por vezes oblíquo, o “amor que não ousa dizer seu nome”, contrapondo-se ao silêncio a que, até então, estava fadado o sujeito homossexual na sociedade brasileira. Esse estudo foi feito através da seleção de algumas linhas de força que atravessam os três conjuntos de diários e que permitem situá-los tanto em seu momento histórico e político, quanto em relação à obra de seus autores, jamais perdendo de vista a grande questão de gênero que esses textos colocam. Entre os temas estudados, destaca-se inicialmente os discursos de detração da prática diarística, as funções que o diário desempenha para aquele que o mantém e o modo como essa escrita se constitui num espaço de auto-hospitalidade que permite a criação de uma determinada imagem de si. A seguir, passa-se a uma tentativa de definição e de história do diário de escritor, que considera, ainda, a importância da emergência, a partir do século XVIII, de uma estética de valorização do rascunhal e do inacabado para o estabelecimento do diário como objeto legítimo de estudo. Trata-se também sobre como o diário permite a seu autor construir uma imagem intelectual a partir da cena da escrita e da cena da leitura. A partir do destaque da cena de leitura no diário, explora-se o modo como as obras de alguns autores franceses, especialmente André Gide, foram de fundamental importância para Cardoso, Ayala e Laus encontrassem um gênero e uma linguagem para escreverem sobre a homossexualidade. Em seguida, trata-se do modo como a escrita diarística se relaciona com os limites entre o íntimo, o privado e o público, sobretudo quando o que está em jogo é a expressão/enunciação da (homos)sexualidade. A publicação do diário, tema abordado posteriormente, potencializa o risco da escrita diarística, principalmente se o texto publicado toca de algum modo na homossexualidade. Por fim, trata-se da forma como esses três diaristas abordam, em sua escrita, a sexualidade, o corpo e o amor. / Cette thèse analyse les journaux intimes de Lúcio Cardoso, Walmir Ayala et Harry Laus, en considérant notamment la façon dont les trois auteurs mettent en scène la question de leur homosexualité. Dans le Brésil de la seconde moitié du XXème siècle, ces trois diaristes se distinguent car ils sont les premiers à créer une écriture à la première personne qui aborde, bien que de manière souvent indirecte, « l’amour qui n’ose pas dire son nom », en s’opposant ainsi au silence auquel, jusqu’alors, était condamné le sujet homosexuel dans la société brésilienne. Cette étude est réalisée à partir de lignes de forces qui caractérisent les trois ensembles de journaux et qui permettent de les situer dans leur moment historique et politique ainsi que dans le cadre plus général de l’œuvre de ces auteurs, en tenant toujours compte du genre de ces récits. Les principales questions abordées dans cette recherche concernent les discours de détraction de la pratique diaristique, les fonctions que le journal intime joue pour qui le tient, la façon dont cette écriture va se constituer en un lieu d’auto-hospitalité qui permet la création d’une certaine image de soi. Un essai de définition et d’histoire du journal d’«écrivant » est ensuite élaboré, en soulignant l’importance de l’émergence, à partir du XVIIIème siècle, d’une esthétique de valorisation du brouillon et de l’inachevé en vue de l’établissement du journal intime comme objet d’étude légitime. On examine aussi la façon dont le journal intime permet à son auteur la construction d’une image d’intellectuel à partir de la scène d’écriture et de la scène de lecture. Cette dernière scène montre notamment l’importance de la lecture des œuvres de certains auteurs français, en particulier celle d’André Gide. Ces lectures permettent à Cardoso, Ayala et Laus de trouver un genre littéraire et un langage aptes à écrire (ou à dire) l’homosexualité. Nous examinons également la façon dont l’écriture diaristique articule l’intime, le privé et le public, notamment quand il s’agit d’exprimer ou d’énoncer l’(homo)sexualité. La publication du journal intime, thème traité ensuite, augmente les risques auxquels s’expose l’écriture diaristique, en particulier si elle aborde l’homosexualité. Finalement, on reviendra sur la manière dont ces trois diaristes évoquent, dans leur écriture, la sexualité, le corps et l’amour.

Dans les années 1920 et 1930, le canon littéraire scandinave semble s’écrire hors des frontières du Nord. De nombreux écrivains aujourd’hui reconnus comme des classiques, tels que Karen Blixen, Eyvind Johnson, Harry Martinson et Aksel Sandemose, font non seulement le choix de quitter la Scandinavie, mais encore de raconter l’ailleurs. Que signifie et implique la délocalisation du champ scandinave de l’époque ? Quels liens peut-on établir entre espace et écriture ? Quelles représentations du paysage en ressortent ? Quelles formes d’identités trouvent leur accomplissement par ce biais ? L’étude de quatre romans permet de tenter de comprendre les mécanismes du phénomène d’émigration littéraire que le Danemark, la Suède et la Norvège ont connu au début du XXème siècle. Il ne s’agit pas d’un mouvement, encore moins d’une école, mais d’une tendance qu’ont eue les artistes scandinaves à se situer « Out of Scandinavia » pour façonner l’identité littéraire nordique au seuil de la modernité. / In the 1920s and 1930s, the Scandinavian literary canon seems to be written outside the borders of the North. Many writers that we acknowledge today as classic authors such as Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), Eyvind Johnson, Harry Martinson and Aksel Sandemose leave the Scandinavian peninsula and narrate the new horizons. What does that kind of relocation of the Scandinavian literary scene mean and imply? How can we link the notion of space to literary writing? How are the landscapes depicted? What kind of identities emerges from this perspective? This work takes focus on four novels and aims to understand the mechanism of the Nordic literary emigration that occurred in Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the beginning of the 20th century. It is not an artistic movement nor a school, but a tendency for Scandinavian writers to take an “Out of Scandinavia” point of view, in order to shape the identity of Nordic literature on the brink of modernity.

This essay explores how in the Harry Potter series, J. K. Rowling's magical heroes function asparadigms whose roles reflect on issues of race, prejudice and racism. Those issues include goodand evil, socialism and aristocracy, purity and impurity, freedom and indebtedness. This essayfocuses on showing how those themes are reflected and confronted in the dipole between HarryPotter and Draco Malfoy. Additionally, the Critical Race Theory, a theory that examines howculture uses and assorts power and race in society, is implemented to show how race andprejudice are reflected in the magical world. By further analyzing Harry and Draco's upbringingand social milieus in relation to the theme of good vs. evil, the development of these characters ispresented in response to their contrasting surroundings. The paper concludes that thesecharacters evolve in the final novels and make conscious choices to achieve the common causeof defying evil, despite their opposing backgrounds. / Denna uppsats utforskar hur J. K. Rowlings magiska hjältar, i Harry Potter-serien, fungerar somen paradigm vars roller reflekterar frågor kring ras, fördomar och rasism. Dessa frågor inkluderargott och ont, socialism och aristokrati, renhet och orenhet, frihet och skuldsättning. Dennauppsats fokuserar på att visa hur dessa teman reflekteras och konfronteras i dipolen mellan HarryPotter och Draco Malfoy. Dessutom implementeras Critical Race Theory, en teori somundersöker hur kultur använder och sorterar makt och ras i samhället, för att visa hur ras ochfördomar återspeglas i den magiska världen. Genom att ytterligare analysera Harry och Dracosuppväxt och sociala miljöer i förhållande till temat ’gott mot ont’, presenteras dessa karaktärersutveckling som ett resultat av kontrasterande omgivning. Uppsatsen drar slutsatsen att dessakaraktärer utvecklas i de sista romanerna och gör medvetna val för att uppnå det gemensammamålet till att bekämpa det onda, trots deras motsatta bakgrunder.

The inquiry of this essay is to examine the expression of evil in fantasy literature with a special focus on J.K. Rowlings’ Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s stone and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but also C.S. Lewis’ Narnia the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Narnia the Last Battle. The purpose is to illuminate different depictions of evil in the books and reflect what these depictions can tell us about evil in our contemporary context. With this essay I want to show how world views are present in fantasy literature with a special focus on the portrayal of evil and its significance for the understanding of the narrative. I mean that the understanding and depiction of evil is a universal problem and an existential issue of relevance to world views.

The Legacy Of Civil Rights Protest Music: Sweet Honey In The Rock's "the Ballad Of Harry T. Moore"

This study investigates the role music played in the Civil Rights Movement as a form of political protest. The first part of the studies analyzed how political protest music was used in the early part of the twentieth-century leading up to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. An analysis of the role of music in African-American culture also provides a historical background to the music-making of the Civil Rights Movement. Specific musical forms such as topical ballads, freedom songs, and spirituals are examined. In addition, musical influences of African culture as well as religious influences on music-making during the Civil Rights Movement are also examined. The second section of the paper investigates the life and murder of NAACP organizer Harry T. Moore of Mims, Florida. Moore’s life and death became the subject of a topical ballad, “The Ballad of Harry T. Moore”, composed in 2001 by musical group Sweet Honey In The Rock. An analysis of the song’s, literary, political, and musical connections to the ideology and music of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as subject matter, gives evidence that places the song within the tradition of the musical protest activities of the Civil Rights Movement

This paper examines how femininity is portrayed in the Harry Potter-series. Many female characters display certain feminine traits which are deemed as negative in the novels, and they are treated as less than because of it. Specifically Dolores Umbridge, Fleur Delacour and Luna Lovegood are disliked or ridiculed because of their feminine expressions. With help from theories about gender performativity, femininity as a scapegoat and texts about feminity this essay is demonstrating how the characters' characteristics and actions of three characters contributes to a misogynistic portrayal of women. It argues that female characters are unable to succeed unless they conform to the series' established norms for women. The purpose of the study is to highlight the possibilities that Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone can contribute to in the value-based work in teaching, as well as how the content can be used as a tool in teaching. This is with the hope that it will lead to an increased understanding and interest among teachers in how children’s and youth literature and value-based work can be combined. The study is a qualitative literature analysis based on Nikolajeva’s (2017) narratological literature analysis model. In the selection of literature, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2014) was chosen, which was the Harry Potter novel that was easiest for the author to access. The study’s analysis highlights three different subcategories: social responsibility, inclusion and exclusion, and laws and regulations. The result of the analysis shows that the book contains several events that can be related to the basic values ​​in the value base. Among other things, various scenarios emerge that students can relate to such things as exclusion, social community, and dilemmas. The study also shows that some rule violations can be related to what is morally right. The content of the book can contribute to the value-based work in teaching through the various events, which can be linked to students’ identifying with the story and which similarities and differences exist between the world in the novel and the real one. The content of the book can also be sued as a pedagogical tool, in that its content can capture students’ interest, which can lead to an increase in motivation. Important conclusions from this study are that Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone can be useful for value-based work, and also children’s and youth literature in general can be useful in teaching. / Studiens syfte är att belysa vilka möjligheter Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone kan bidra till i värdegrundsarbetet i undervisningen, samt hur innehållet kan användas som pedagogiskt redskap. Detta med förhoppningen om att det ska leda till en ökad förståelse och intresse bland lärare om hur barn- och ungdomslitteratur och värdegrundsarbetet kan kombineras. Studien är en kvalitativ litteraturanalys som utgår från Nikolajevas (2017) narratologiska litteraturanalysmodell. I urvalet rörande litteratur valdes Harry Potter and the Philospher’s Stone (2014) som var den enklaste romanen i serien för författaren att få tillgång till. Studiens analys belyser tre olika subkategorier: socialt ansvar, inkludering och exkludering och lagar och regler. Innehållet i boken kan också bidra som ett pedagogiskt redskap, genom att dess innehåll kan fånga elevers intresse som kan leda till att motivationen ökar. Viktiga slutsatser med denna studie är att Harry Potter and the Philospher’s Stone kan vara användbar för värdegrundsarbetet, och även barn- och ungdomslitteratur överlag kan vara användbart i undervisningen.
