CAE Sun Simulation - Thermo Structural Coupling / CAE solsimulering – Termo-strukturell kopplingStaffas, Kristin January 2020 (has links)
Deformation of materials due to heat exposure can be a challenge in vehicle design. Sun exposure and heat build up in the vehicle cabin contribute to accelerated aging of the materials used. To understand how this process affects the durability, numerical simulation is an important tool. This thesis work investigates whether it is possible to, with weather data and knowledge of how a car is used, simulate the deformation process of the trim parts due to heat exposure from the sun. To answer this question, two simulation methods have been compared: The first method is to only look at the aging of the material over time. This method is used today at Volvo Cars, but has been found to be insufficient from a number of aspects. The second method includes the effects of the reversible deformations. This method has not previously been tested in a similar context but was considered interesting as it models more true to life. In addition, the effects of modeling the car according to a virtual customer behavior, rather than stationary, were investigated. The main simulation tools used are TAITherm and Abaqus. The results show that modeling the vehicle with an imagined user routine yields a lower mean temperature as the car is cooled down when driven. The result of the comparison between the two methods shows that inclusion of the effects of the reversible deformations contribute to a better model of the aging of the trim parts due to heat exposure from the sun.

Using the magic if to circumvent the problems for the actor working with green screen technologyJacobs, Nicolaas Hendrik January 2013 (has links)
When portraying a character in a fictional world the actor is faced with many challenges. To circumvent these challenges, he must become congruent with the reality of the fictional world. In order to do so, the actor has to ‘believe’ in the circumstances of the unfolding scene and live ‘in the moment’. These external circumstances act as stimuli which the actor uses to create and consequently ‘believe’ in the environment that the character inhabits. However, the use of green screen technology in special effects limits or eliminates these stimuli and the external circumstances. Green screen is a technique used in film and television that allows the filmmaker to film an actor in combination with a green screen and then replace the ‘green’ with anything the filmmaker requires. This allows for compositing to occur and the filmed reality to be manipulated. However, this technology challenges the actor’s ‘belief’ and behaviour, thus affecting congruence with and the (photo)realism of the created fictional world. In a green screen environment the actor is challenged to imagine, experience and act in line with the circumstances of the fictional world that will replace the green screen, instead of the green environment in which he finds himself.
One acting strategy that elicits imagination, action and feeling is Stanislavsky’s notion of the magic if. Accordingly, this dissertation proposes that this strategy can assist the actor in circumventing the challenges that arise when working with green screen technology. Stanislavsky developed his acting principles by observing human behaviour in an attempt to use the mind–body paradigm in circumnavigating the acting moment. The field of cognitive neuroscience has also investigated human behaviour and the mind–body paradigm and recent discoveries have increased understanding of the fields. These discoveries have validated the notion of the magic if and the components it incorporates. Yet, the discoveries surrounding the notion of the magic if and, subsequently, the increased understanding of the concept have not to date been applied to acting with green screen technology. It is therefore hypothesised that, by triangulating the challenges of ‘green screen acting’, the principles of the magic if and the knowledge gained from cognitive neuroscience, an acting strategy can be developed that will assist the actor in the green screen environment and thus create verisimilitude with the fictional world.
This hypothesis has led to the theoretical development of explorations that will strengthen the skills the actor needs in order to apply the notion of the magic if; as well as an acting strategy to assist the actor when entering the green screen environment. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Drama / Unrestricted

Evaluation of Readability of displays in Bright SurroundingsGuo, Yi January 2014 (has links)
With the wide spread of wireless technology, many devices, such as tablets, smartphones, notebooks, fixed and portable navigation systems are becoming immensely convenient to access and are making a significant contribution to our daily life. Compared to conventional PC, portable devices are used at different times of the day and in various conditions and environments, both indoors and outdoors. As a consequence, devices need to be adaptive and adaptable to a wide range of use contexts and conditions. It is often argued that contextual factors, such as the ambient illuminance in relation to characteristics of the display (e.g., surface treatment, size, screen reflectance, and display luminance) may have a strong influence on the use of such devices and corresponding user experiences. Yet, the current understanding of these influence factors is still rather limited. Therefore, in this thesis work, emphasis is given particularly to the impact of lighting on readability, visual performance and affective state. As a first step, a preparatory investigation focusing on the objective measure- ment of display luminance and contrast, display gloss, and luminance in different scenes, took place. For this first step, a large number of tablet and laptop dis- plays were evaluated. This preparatory investigation served as a complement to and as an input for step two, namely a subjective study with human test subjects which was organized in a controlled lab environment. In the subjective test (N=18), different types of displays, luminance settings and lighting conditions were included to investigate the impact on display read- ability. The results of subjective tests indicate that for matte, visual acuity and reading speed is both impaired by the increase of ambient light luminance. However, they are compensated effectively by the increase of display luminance when it is below 500-600 cd/ m2. Compared with matte display, the glossy dis- play shows to be more robust in relation to the ambient light, though it indeed has a negative effect on visual acuity and reading speed. However, for subjective feelings, there is no significant difference between the two displays. Both of them are influenced by the ambient light only. In the post-experiment evaluation of the preference of displays, the majority (61%) of the test subjects indicated a preference for the glossy display.

Slag Cleaning of a Reduced Iron Silicate Slag by Settling : Influence of Process Parameters and Slag Modification on Copper ContentIsaksson, Jenny January 2021 (has links)
During the pyrometallurgical extraction of copper, a significant part of the copper is lost with discard slag, which decreases profits, overall copper recovery, and efficiency of raw material usage. Smelting furnace slag usually has a copper content that is close to or higher than that of copper ores. The investigation of copper losses to slag is thus a task of practical significance, as the ore grades are depleting. Slag cleaning, e.g., a settling furnace, can reduce copper losses to slag as the mechanically suspended copper-containing droplets separate from slag under the action of gravity and can hence be recovered. An industrial trial was conducted in an electric settling furnace with slag originating from an electric smelting furnace and processed in a zinc fuming furnace. The trial was conducted to increase the understanding of copper losses to slag and how the process parameters temperature and settling time influence the slag copper content. The obtained slag samples were also evaluated to gain better insights as to the settling mechanism and, if any, factors that hinder the copper phases from settling. Slag modification with CaO was also evaluated to investigate how the modification influences the settling of copper phases and, thus, the final slag copper content. Samples collected during the industrial trial were the basis for the evaluation in the current work. The samples came from batches with varying temperatures, settling times, and CaO content collected at four different sample positions. Instrumental techniques, including XRF, FAAS, ICP-SFMS, and SEM-EDS, were used to analyze the chemical compositions of the samples and the appearance of copper and associated phases. The results indicated that the copper content of outgoing slag increased with increasing temperature in the evaluated interval. The copper content was also concluded to be more strongly affected by the temperature compared to the settling time. Regulating the temperature to the lower temperature interval in the settling furnace could thus decrease the final slag copper content. During the slag characterization, it was found that suspended copper-containing phases were hindered from settling, due to the attachment to solid phases and gas bubbles in the slag. By controlling and minimizing the presence of the bottom buildup and thus solid phases in the slag, the copper content can be decreased. The results indicated that the CaO slag modification decreased the final slag copper content, and can thus be used as a modifier for increased settling.

Création d'objets mats : optimisation d’un procédé d’impression en relief en termes d’apparence / Creating matte objects : Optimisation of the appearance of a relief printing processPage, Marine 19 December 2018 (has links)
2.5D printing is between traditional color printing, for the process and its visual quality, and 3D printing, which makes forms and reliefs by ink superposition. Because of its properties, 2.5D printing could allow the realistic reproduction of objects and surfaces, but inks are too glossy. To reduce and control this glossy aspect of inks, we modulate the roughness of the printed layers, at the micro-scale, both in frequency and amplitude. Influence of parameters was measured, and different strategies were suggested to reduce sparkle and to allow the creation of matte colored layers: by constituting a 5D space where gloss and color are modeled, we can make gloss level of colored surfaces uniform.Several case studies form the Conservation of Cultural Heritage were considered, where 2.5D printing could help the curator, the conservator or the archivist. We studied in particular the issues of the the gap filling on an archaeological object, the realistic reproduction of surfaces, and the creation of matte objects for readability.

Distributed Ray Tracing v rozumném čase / Distributed Ray Tracing in Reasonable TimeSlovák, Radek January 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the method of distributed ray tracing focusing on optimalization of this method. The method uses simulation of some attributes of light by distributing rays of lights and it produces high quality and partly realistic images. The price for realitic effects is the high computational complexity of the method. The thesis analysis the theory connected with these aspects. A large part describes optimalizations of this method, i.e. searching for the nearest triangle intersection using kd-trees, quasi random sampling with faster convergence, the use of SSE instruction set and fast ray - triangle intersection. These optimalizations brought a noticable speed - up. The thesis includes description of implementation of these techniques. The implementation itself emphasises the practical usability including generating some advanced animations and universal description of objects.
