Previous issue date: 2013-12-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this research is to understand the phenomenon of cybermediatic tele-existence existence in real time enabled by cybercultural communication and relationship platforms in fixed or mobile devices to gauge their socio-anthropological impact and, based on an analysis of the relationship between subjectivity, tele-existence and cybercultural visibility, examine the individual‟s status in the hyper-spectacular dimension. The object of study is the spectral, signic corporality, the signic-imagerial arrangement, which gives the user an apparent organicity that renders him present in communication environments. The delimitation of the corpus involves the observation of profiles, avatars and other interfaces of subjective projection in social networks, metaverses and social games to understand the imperative process of continuous spectralization of existence resulting from the natural desire for self-exposure. Having stated the above, the main question guiding this research is: If the projection of existence in cyberspace is aimed at providing a thumbnail sketch of the individual in the midst of information flows, giving him cybermediatic visibility, why is its effect usually that of contributing to his dissolution or invisibility? To answer this question, we propose the hypothesis that to tele-exist, albeit perceived as a pleasant pastime, constitutes an agonistic dispute for the mediatic center stage, which leads to the excessive production of information as a strategy to keep the user continually in the limelight. Everyone wants to appear because they fear insignificance, which is associated with the fear of nonexistence. Because existence from now on seems to make sense only when it passes through cybermediatic hyper-spectacularization, the essence of the individual‟s composition in cyberspace has shifted from Who I am to What I‟m thinking/doing. The effect of the information saturation and excessive visibility resulting from this shift is that every act of projection simultaneously becomes one of dissolution (in)visibility. The methodology for this research consisted of a literature survey and a qualitative field study, based on netnography (translated into its main elements: noninvasive entry into the aforementioned platforms, exploratory survey of profiles and avatars, participant observation, and unstructured interviews with users). The theoretical foundation of this interdisciplinary research (philosophical, sociological, anthropological and psychoanalytical), which provided the necessary epistemological frameworks for the analysis of the object of study, for checking hypotheses, and for solving the research problem, includes philosophical postmodernism, French post-structuralism, cultural semiotics and phenomenological sociodromology / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo compreender o fenômeno da tele-existência cibermediática existência em tempo real facultada por plataformas ciberculturais de comunicação e relacionamento, em dispositivos tecnológicos fixos ou móveis para dimensionar sua repercussão socioantropológica e, a partir da análise da relação entre subjetividade, tele-existência e visibilidade cibercultural, pensar o estatuto do sujeito na dimensão hiperespetacular.

Previous issue date: 2015-06-22 / This research examines the ways in which the phenomena of communication and speed jointly instigate subtle forms of violence that ultimately thwart the recognition of experience in intersubjective relations (technologically articulated or not) in the advanced mediatic civilization. Consistent with this demarcation, the overall objective of the research was to investigate how these forms of violence are composed as capital assimilated by the individual and how they appear embedded in the dynamics of recognition, compromising its effectiveness in social life under dromocracized conditions (i.e., marked by acceleration in all the sectors of human activity). The relevance of this study lies in the treatment of the aforementioned communication logic as a habitus and therefore as a complex of mediations between individuals, in which certain forms of violence not commonly studied participate, affecting recognition as a constitutive experience of the individual. The main research problem consists in understanding specifically how the violence arising from real-time logic jeopardizes the conditions for recognition in this dromocratic context of intersubjective relationships. This problem implies the basic assumption that such subtle forms of violence are articulated in the life of an individual who self-elaborates upon processing symbolic representations of himself and of the other, irreversibly deepening the conditions of impracticability of recognition as an intersubjective experience. The theoretical framework is based on the following thematic research lines and authors: [1] socio-historical foundations of advanced mediatic civilization and of dromocracy, according to Trivinho and Virilio; [2] concepts of violence and its manifestations, outlined by Michaud, Dadoun, Crettiez, Pontara, Bourdieu and Passeron, and Trivinho; [3] definition of the individual in Lacan; and [4] principles of recognition in Honneth, Taylor, Levinas, Derrida and Lacan. Given the theoretical nature of this research, the bibliographic material is reflectively analyzed, focusing on practical and emblematic situations that underlie the materiality of violence inherent to the logic of real-time communication, which enhances the precariousness of recognition in accelerated social life. It is believed that the findings of this research constitute a proposed epistemological critique of the modus operandi of real time, considered in the Thesis as a problematizing sociocultural factor of relationships in which individual and alterity are irremediably involved / A presente pesquisa está dedicada às formas pelas quais os fenômenos da comunicação e da velocidade fomentam conjuntamente modalidades sutis de violência que acabam por inviabilizar a experiência do reconhecimento em relações intersubjetivas (articuladas ou não tecnologicamente) na civilização mediática avançada.

Previous issue date: 2007-11-09 / This Doctoral Thesis is dedicated to the study of the historical and cultural significance of
Social Programs of Digital Inclusion (SPDI), defined as a set of initiatives aimed at
disseminating the use of informatics tools among social groups excluded from access to
digital technologies, above all for reasons of an economic nature.
These programs are analyzed in the current context of the restructuring of capitalism and of
the international hierarchic relations it engenders. This context will be analyzed based on
the critical and theoretical repertoire of the area of Communications, since contemporary
capitalist relations make intensive use of the creation and circulation of signs as a form of
value appropriation. Within the processes of communication, the so-called digital network
media , whose dissemination of informatics tools are the linchpin of SPDI, stand out as
forerunners.
The research problem is founded on the fact that the appropriation of digital techniques
such as those enabled by SPDI does not achieve its objective; in other words, the outcomes
of these policies are restricted or even voided by the very logic of reproduction of
capitalism, which, today, needs the process of social informatization in order to produce
value.
The principal hypothesis of this work therefore advocates the existence of a subordinate
inclusion, promoted by SPDI as a form of valuing the typical products of cyberculture
through the extensive and intensive exploitation of specific labor, which is required by the
contemporary organization of capitalism. In other words, SPDI act as an aggravating factor
of the domination to which their clientele are subjected and not as an emancipative force,
thus contradicting the very purposes of these programs.
Because the workplan of this research involved exclusively theoretical and epistemological
reflection, the methodology adopted here was basically founded upon bibliographical
research, guided by concerns regarding the issue of social critique. The structure of the
argument is divided into three areas, namely: 1) contemporary capitalism and indistinction
between economy and culture; 2) communication based on vectors of informatization of the
quotidian and of mediatic saturation; and 3) digital inclusion and social organization of
cyberculture.
The theoretical body of reference is composed of contemporary authors such as
Baudrillard, Bauman, Giddens, Kumar, Sfez, Trivinho and Virilio, among others, and is
based on the perspectives of dromology, post-structuralism, post-modernism, post-
Marxism, the theory of biopolitics, and the current critique of communications and of the
mediatic civilization.
The findings of this research contribute toward a renewed understanding of the theme and,
above all, to the demystification of the social and historical role of digital inclusion / A presente Tese de Doutorado está consagrada ao estudo da significação histórica e cultural
contemporânea do capitalismo.
A estrutura

Previous issue date: 2009-06-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This Master s Dissertation discusses the relation between cyberculture and
subjectivity. Its main study objective is the identity projected in the Orkut profile, a virtual
platform that enables the user to publicize his self in a social/community network of
friends. The practice of building profiles that confer singularities and visibility to the
subjectivities acting in cyberspace, establishing boundaries for who I am , is marked by the
problem of articulation between representation and simulation, in the permeable interface
between the real, the virtual and the hyper-real, and also involves concepts in crisis such as
identity and subject. Starting from the discovery that cyberspace comprises new processes of
subjectivation by engendering the virtualization and glocalization of existence, and that social
networks, particularly Orkut, enable new forms of experimenting the dimensions of being and
of relating to others, this study, insofar as it concerns the aforementioned problem,
established the following questions: (1) Does the profile of an Orkut user correspond to his
identity?, and (2) What are the implications of the congruence between profile, identity and
subject in cyberculture? These questions led to the formulation of three hypotheses: (1) Orkut
constitutes and interesting discursive space for the enunciation and circumscription of the
self in informational flows; (2) in cyberspace, identities/profiles hold a status equivalent to
the user s own body as a dynamic instrument of individuation; and (3) the daily experience in
signic bodies leads to the dissolution of the concrete spaces of living and promotes the
strategies of cybercultural management of existence, producing a direct impact on the
physical and biological reality of the body and the territory. With the purpose of observing,
describing and analyzing the strategies of construction and projection of identity in virtuality,
of reflecting upon the congruence or superposition between identity, subject, and profile in
the processes of hyper-spectacularization of the self, and of presenting the resulting
cyberspatial management correlated to the invisible phenomenon of signic indexation of
content identities, the terms of the commissioning and use of the free services rendered by
Orkut, as well as pages for the registration, construction, maintenance and presentation of
profiles and communities, were selected as the corpus of this work. The plan underpinning
this research into post-modernism, into the semiotics of culture, into sociodromology and into
cultural states, among other compatible theories, provided the theoretical and
epistemiological references necessary for the analysis of the object (identity/profile), for
checking the hypotheses, and for solving the research problem. The set of methodological
strategies adopted during the process of this work also incorporated the netnographic method
to guide the exploratory survey in the virtual environment, the collection and interpretation of
data, the participatory observation and the realization of interviews. With these
characteristics, which insert this Master s Dissertation, in an interdisciplinary manner, into
the area of Communication, the aim is to contribute toward the development of studies on
do corpo e do território.

Previous issue date: 2017-02-24 / Não recebi financiamento / The way new discursive materialities work in advertising media is our focus in this work, being our main objective to analyze how these materialities reflect in discursive practices that are constructed and reinforced in the scope of media texts, specifically in commercials. To that end, we based our theoretical-methodological approach in the Franco-Brazilian Discourse Analysis, especially with the contributions of Michel Pêcheux and Eni Orlandi, also using the theoretical contribution of the studies of Michel Foucault and Debord, in order to understand the exercise of power through the mediatic discourse, in which we understand that there is the control of the speech due to economic, social and political ends that reinforce the relations of force inside the social practices, affecting ideologically the subjects, who are immersed in the symbolic and spectacular representations in advertising speech. Our object of study consists of seven commercials, two of them of women‟s underwear by the brand Duloren, three of them of beer by the brands Antarctica and Devassa and the remaining two of the Motel Lemon. Our analysis was made from four discursive sequences, in which we analyzed the slogans, the images (color and layout), the physical and ideological positioning of the female image and the title. We understand that these elements, common in the construction of advertising, constitute the ideological, social and historical mark that inscribes the subject in different discursive formations, retake forgotten discourses in the imaginary and reconstruct them under other conditions of production, questioning the subjects and making them identify with the ideological formation that is conveyed by the product / service being sold. The considerations derived from this research led us to reflect on these effects of meanings, which tend to represent women, through certain discursive practices that evidence a confrontation of discourses and accentuate other discourses that are reconstructed and reformulated in an apparent new discursive event. Thus, it is necessary to consider the media not only as a means of information, but as a strong ideological instrument that reproduces recurrent discursive practices that are the reflection of the devaluation of the female figure, due to a socio-historical condition and reinforced by the market industry. However, there is resistance in the effects of meanings that are reproduced in commercials, since there is no single meaning that stabilizes in this object.

The present dissertation proposes to reconstruct the mediatic model of public sphere by incorporating the strong communicative normative connotations found in deliberative democracy. As such, a comprehensive review and analysis was carried out of liberal, republican and deliberative public sphere models, stressing the interconnections between them and the ways these different traditions of political thought conceive processes that shape public opinion and define the spaces and functions of popular participation in democratic political life. More specifically, the research uses analytic techniques of theoretical synthesis to revise the concept of public sphere in order to provide a theoretical answer to the problem of how to reconcile the demands of communicative deliberative democracy with the perception that the mediation of communication policy is made ever more central to the public sphere constituted by the media. The thesis is divided into two complementary parts. The first, grounded on a literature review of models of liberal, republican and deliberative democracy and their subsequent models of public sphere, it discusses the structural conditions for the democratic formation of public opinion and political will, and thus the conditions for the democratic legitimacy of administrative and legislative acts of the political system. The second part seeks to delineate a more precise description of the abstract mediatic public sphere derived from the concepts of networks of multiple and partial public spheres, the principles of open access and effective participation of citizens in public life and the distinction between normative and strategic communication as established by Habermas. In conclusion, is argued that media systems organized on the basis of plural media types, characterized by the coexistence of commercial media systems, public service media, community and alternative media in different sectors, is the basis for developing a mediatic public sphere, self limiting and sufficiently comprehensive to meet the heavy communicative demands of democratic regimes and, more particularly, of deliberative democracy.

In this master's thesis, we have investigated the situated practice of film criticism from the problematization of the ways in which members of the specialized film critics conceive the role of media-journalistic activity in the formation of their own written productions. This problematization is based on interviews with members of this community, as well as members of a community of university students. Other textual sources, both oral and written, in circulation on the Internet, also constitute the basis of documentary research. The analysis of these documents showed that the cultural products of the situated practice of film criticism - that is, the written critiques - were not always consensually seen by our interviewees as belonging to the genre 'film critique'. This fact led us to seek to understand which criteria these communities, specialized or not, used to undergird the inclusion or exclusion of certain critiques of the field in the genre 'film critique". From the perspective of the activity theory, we began to understand the 'film criticism' as a social practice that could be performed by different people in different contexts. We believe that arguing in favor of the legitimacy of this conceptual shift might help to challenge the view that there is only one legitimate social space for the production of film criticism / Mestrado / Lingua Materna / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

Previous issue date: 2013-07-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Throughout its history, cinema has been a cultural phenomenon of great popularity. On the other hand, the changes it faces along the way are also closely linked to that culture. Likewise, film criticism studies cinema from a theoretical bias taking such transformations into account when its productions is about both filmic forms and the way film criticism is produced and disseminated. In this thesis, one sought to understand how the film criticism is configured from the use of hypertext networks on the web for its production, starting from the point of view of Comuncational Ecosystems to understand a phenomenon that presents itself in an mediatic communication environment. With such purpose, one used the concept of Expanded Cinema, coined by Gene Youngblood (2001), as a basis for studying film criticism created from these networks in their complexity. The concept of Acoustic Space, developed by Marshall McLuhan (1964, 1971, 1980), also provides the basis for thinking about the communication phenomenon in all its complexity and in a systemic way. It was elaborated an observation script for the site chosen for the empirical cut, Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com) to perform a data collection, which took place between 3 December 2012 and 3 January 2013, in order to monitor the formation of the hypertext network of the film criticism posted on the site. The research concludes that film criticism on the web can be thought as Expanded Criticism that takes place in an acoustic space, since it is beyond a two-dimensional spatiality. The performance of the reading done by the internet user creates this expanded criticism through a haptic visuality that allows one navigate through the content. The enjoyment of expanded criticism is beyond its hypertextual nature and it is also sensory, cognitive and multimedia, implying an experience, from the ecosystemical standpoint, focused on relations.

Previous issue date: 2009-12-11 / The present work aims to analyze, based on the French Discourse Analysis approach,
the representation of Brazilian education constructed by Veja magazine, in the section
called Ponto de Vista. Veja was chosen because it is a representative magazine in the
Brazilian, as well as in the world publishing market: Veja is the most read magazine in
the country and the fourth information magazine most sold in the world. Due to the
magazine s privileged position, what is published becomes an authorized discourse, as
if it were involved by a veracity aura . Through informative and opinion texts, the
magazine doesn t express how Brazilian education and teachers are, but it makes it
happen. While Veja talks about relevant topics related to the country, like education, the
magazine puts itself in the important place as an opinion former, able to significantly
influence the people to adopt an attitude. With this power reaffirmed all the time, Veja
is capable of constructing representations and stereotypes, which, many times, are
accepted by the readers, who read the text disarmed . To analyze the way this process
occurs, two opinion texts that talk about Brazilian education were chosen. The purpose
is to investigate the effects of meaning, relating the language with its exteriority, and
based on that, to verify the stereotypes that are supported. The concept of discursive
formation, combined with concepts of subject and ideology are going to be used in the
analysis, which is based on studies of Pêcheux (1997), Maingueneau (1993) and Orlandi
(2001). To investigate the representation constructed by the mass media about
educational issues is the first step to think about education s images and the reasons that
lead Journalism and public opinion to support these images. To focus on the symbolic
fights that happen on the journalist method is a way to try to understand the complex
interpretation word game and ideology reflexes; it is also a tool to better understand the
organization of social structures, of institutions and, finally, of the supplies and its
relation with the symbolic.
a população tome atitudes.
meio jornalístico e a opinião pública a sustentarem essas imagens.

[en] DIGITAL MEDIA AND THE GEOPOLITICS OF THE CLOUD: SOVEREIGNTY AMIDST THE VIRTUALITIES OF MODERN COMPUTATION / [pt] MÍDIA DIGITAL E GEOPOLÍTICA DA NUVEM: SOBERANIA EM MEIO ÀS VIRTUALIDADES DA COMPUTAÇÃO MODERNARAFAEL FELGUEIRAS ROLO 15 March 2021 (has links)
A mídia digital
A nova mídia desintegra as
fronteiras subjetivas e objetivas associadas à soberania, concebida tradicionalmente
Enquanto a soberana é entendida a priori
soberania. / [en] The thesis problematizes the role of digital media in the (con)formation of
contemporary geopolitics, especially with regard to the concepts of sovereignty and
emancipation. Understood as a nomic structure, digital media operates as an active
agent in the partition of space and in the regulation of fluxes of forces, matter, form
and information. Computation and Internet are responsible for the design and
conformation both of Earth s physical layer, as well as of the virtual space of the
Net, the so-called Cloud. A radical materialism operates between the
disintegration of the analogical principle into the digital, through the machinic
axioms of protocols, until it reaches the semantical over-codification of the
platform. It is only then that the nomos of the cloud assumes its most visible form.
This nomos draws a non-Euclidean geometry (i.e., a fractal), one that defies the
causal logic and develops new dimensions of World-design. In it, the archive stops
functioning as a mere representation of the world, for the very world becomes an
archive. The ontological and epistemological levels of analysis of such a nomic
order are both conditioned by a political dimension. Digital media weaves a
diagram that establishes new regimes of visibility (interface, expression) and
enunciation (addressability, content). A diagram before which, to be or to know,
either in the realm of Computation in general or on the Internet, means to be
subjugated by the idiosyncratic technical-technological a priori at hand. A new
form of agency of bodies and signs is implied. New media disintegrates subjective
and objective frontiers commonly associated with the sovereign condition
traditionally conceived as a trait native to the Nation-State. It does this by instituting
a new topology/topography of bodies and agencies in the place of what existed
before it. The new mediatic era unfolds the territory in a hyperbolic dimension,
overlapping different sovereignties over a specific transmission or circuit. The
mediatic channel operates as a substratum over which power might exert itself or
be exerted, while, at the same time, forfeiting any human condition and, what is
even more, setting aside every subjective presupposition. The thesis poses the
question about how to define the sovereign condition in the context of the new
mediatic era and the collapse of the Westphalian model of the Nation-State.
Connected to the problem regarding sovereignty, the thesis asks how it is possible
to establish a (dia)grammatic of emancipation struggles in this context. Following
the recent events, it is assumed that the new mediatic era consists of two different
crossings. The first one would be the overcoming of the analogical by the digital,
while the second would be the transition from the a-signifying bit to the semantics
of interfacial and addressable regimes. These two events are consummated in the
concept of the platform, understood as a rigid diagram in which an asymmetric
relation between user and system takes place. According to this asymmetrical
relationship, the user is not capable of accessing the arcanum of the source-code.
The entrails of the system are protected from the direct action of an ordinary User.
Only after the recognition of this asymmetry, can the concepts of sovereignty and
emancipation be adequately analysed. While sovereignty is a priori understood as
the condition of that which (human or otherwise) is capable of accessing the
potential of the source-code, emancipation in the realm of the new media depends
on the revindication of such a sovereign condition.
