Women's Power: A Cross-Generational Exploration of One German-Russian Farm FamilyDockter, Shona Ann January 1992 (has links)
Exploration of the familial power women possess is growing as sociologists and anthropologists recognize the legitimacy of power internal to the family. The focus of this research was to uncover the forms of power German-Russian women held as they operated in the private sphere of the family. Attention also focused on the transference of women's power, and the family power dynamics unique to farm families. Members of three generations of one German-Russian farm family were interviewed. The results indicated German-Russian women operated from bases of power derived from their roles as farm wives who contributed to family sustenance, and as caretakers and kinkeepers, maintaining family cohesion. While male power is largely public and formal, women's reliance on the bonds of familial relationships across generations lend them greater power in that realm.

Návrh metodiky výpočtu životnosti valivého ložiska / Design of the computational lifetime prediction methodology for the roll bearingVaculka, Miroslav January 2016 (has links)
This master’s thesis deals with a fatigue analysis of a roller bearing. The fatigue analysis consists of determining service-life of a roller bearing using a stress-strain analysis with finite element method and subsequent numeric calculation using software fe-safe with application of Brown-Miller multiaxial fatigue criterion. Service-life of a roller bearing is determined by number of cycles to failure in the form of pitting formation which is consequence of contact fatigue. According to calculations was found an inappropriateness of Brown-Miller criterion for high-cycle contact fatigue. Test of other available criteria was performed. Principal-Strain criterion provided the best match with ISO 281 standard.

North of Ourselves: Identity and Place in Jim Wayne Miller’s PoetryMcCrotty, Micah 01 May 2019 (has links)
Jim Wayne Miller’s poetry examines how human history and topography join to create place. His work often incorporates images of land and ecology; it deliberately questions the delineation between place and self. This thesis explores how Miller presents images of water to describe the relationship between inhabitants and their location, both with the positive image of the spring and the negative image of the flood. Additionally, this thesis examines how the Brier, Miller’s most prominent persona character, grieves his separation from home and ultimately finds healing and reunification of the self through his return to the hills. In his poetry, Miller argues that an essential piece of people’s identity is linked with the land, and, through recognition of the importance of topography on the development of the self, individuals can foster a deeper sense of community through appreciation of their place.

Gate Drive Design for SiC MOSFET Device Characterization : Investigation into the impact of the gate inductance and resistance on the switching behaviour of SiC Power MOSFETsMbah, Elochukwu January 2023 (has links)
Silicon Carbide as a wide-bandgap semiconductor has several physical and electrical advantages over Silicon for high voltage and high frequency applications. SiC as a MOSFET device has a lot of great characteristics like lower on-resistance and low input capacitances. However, due to its high switching capabilities, SiC MOSFET-based converter circuits experience higher dv/dt and di/dt transients and are therefore more susceptible to parasitic elements. This thesis investigates the interaction of the parasitic gate inductance and resistance on the switching behaviour of SiC DMOSFET (planar) and UMOSFET (trench). To examine this, a double pulse test (DPT) setup was utilised both in simulation and experimentally. The influence of the gate inductance and resistance on the oscillation behaviour in the VGS during the miller period was found to be dependent on the condition of the upper device. Furthermore, the upper device was discovered to have a high impact on the oscillations in the VGS via its source inductance. The gate inductance showed a mixed impact on IDS and VDS overshoot, with IDS overshoot reducing with increasing gate inductance and the reverse case for VDS. The gate resistance, however, showed a consistent impact on both IDS and VDS overshoot, with both reducing with increasing gate resistance. These results ultimately point to the impact of di/dt and dv/dt transients. An interesting result observed on these root causes showed that in the DPT arrangement used, lower test current levels may have a more significant impact on the oscillations in the VGS than higher test current when varying the test currents, with 20 A having the highest impact on the oscillations in simulations and 15 A having the highest impact in experimental verification. On the switching energy, the gate inductance was not shown to have a significant impact on switching losses while the gate resistance had a much more significant impact on the switching losses.

The Impact of a Father and Son on Texas: Isaac Van Zandt and Khleber Miller Van ZandtCranz, Jane Sloan 12 1900 (has links)
Isaac Van Zandt and his son Khleber Miller Van Zandt were instrumental figures in the growth of Texas and the development of the town of Fort Worth, Texas. Isaac Van Zandt was one of the main members of the delegation from Texas to the United States who negotiated for annexation. He also played a major part in the Texas Constitutional Convention of 1845 and made a run for governor before his death in 1847. His son, Khleber Miller Van Zandt was a Confederate soldier and businessman who saw something in the outpost of Fort Worth that was worth developing. Along with an influential group of other businessmen he was a part of every major development that occurred in Fort Worth until his death in 1930. Both Van Zandts' roles are discussed and the importance of their actions is brought to light.

Platonic Craft and Medical EthicsBader, Daniel 14 February 2011 (has links)
Platonic Craft and Medical Ethics examines the Platonic theory of craft and shows its application to different ethical problems in medicine, both ancient and modern. I begin by elucidating the Platonic use of the term “craft” or “technē”, using especially the paradigmatic craft of medicine, and explicate a number of important principles inherent in his use of the term. I then show how Plato’s framework of crafts can be applied to two ancient debates. First, I show how Plato’s understanding of crafts is used in discussing the definition of medicine, and how he deals with the issue of “bivalence”, that medicine seems to be capable of generating disease as well as curing it. I follow this discussion into Aristotle, who, though he has a different interpretation of bivalence, has a solution in many ways similar to Plato’s. Second, I discuss the relevance of knowledge to persuasion and freedom. Rhetors like Gorgias challenge the traditional connections of persuasion to freedom and force to slavery by characterizing persuasion as a type of force. Plato addresses this be dividing persuasion between sorcerous and didactic persuasion, and sets knowledge as the new criterion for freedom. Finally, I discuss three modern issues in medical ethics using a Platonic understanding of crafts: paternalism, conclusions in meta-analyses and therapeutic misconceptions in research ethics. In discussing paternalism, I argue that tools with multiple excellences, like the body, should not be evaluated independently of the uses to which the patient intends to put them. In discussing meta-analyses, I show how the division of crafts into goal-oriented and causal parts in the Phaedrus exposes the confusion inherent in saying that practical conclusions can follow directly from statistical results. Finally, I argue that authors like Franklin G. Miller and Howard Brody fail to recognize the hierarchical relationship between medical research and medicine when they argue that medical research ethics should be autonomous from medical ethics per se.

Walter M. Miller, Jr.’s A Canticle for Leibowitz: A Study of Apocalyptic Cycles, Religion and Science, Religious Ethics and Secular Ethics, Sin and Redemption, and Myth and Preternatural InnocenceSmith, Cynthia M. 12 June 2006 (has links)
Walter M. Miller, Jr.’s A Canticle for Leibowitz is a timeless story about apocalyptic cycles, conflicts and similarities between religion and science, religious ethics and secular ethics, sin and redemption, myth and preternatural innocence. Canticle is a very religious story about a monastery dedicated to preserving scientific knowledge from the time before nuclear war which devastated the world and reduced humanity to a pre-technological civilization. The Catholic Church and this monastery are portrayed as a bastion of civilization amidst barbarians and a light of faith amidst atheism. Unfortunately, humanity destroys the Earth once again, but Miller ends with two beacons of hope: a starship headed for the unknown to help humanity begin again and the preternaturally innocent Rachel who portends a future for similarly innocent human beings repopulating the Earth. Thus, faith ultimately triumphs over atheism even in the midst of almost total catastrophe.
