Kulturarvets Nätverk : en studie av tre svenska museijärnvägar

I denna uppsats undersöks hur järnvägen har musealiserats utifrån tre svenska museijärnvägar; Föreningen Gotandstågets Gotlands Hesselby Jernväg, Tjustbygdens Järnvägsförenings Hultsfred Västerviks Järnväg samt Skånska Järnvägars bana Brösarp-Sankt Olof. Musealiseringsprocessen och den nuvarande verksamheten undersöks och analyseras med fokus på hur identitet och autenticitet/ auktoritet hanteras och värderas. Actor Network Theory och Assemblageteori används som metodologiska verktyg för att studera de komponenter, aktanter, som nätverket museijärnväg består av. Identitet är viktigt för museiföreningarna på olika sätt. Det är dels lokal/regional identitet som föreningarnas verksamhet och museala anknytning ansluter sig till, vilket poängteras på en rad olika sätt, till exempel genom märkning på fordon eller med användandet av speciella emblem. Autenticitet är ett viktigt värde för museijärnvägarna men det behandlas på olika sätt. I de fall museijärnvägen är byggnadsminnesförklarad tolkas miljön som autentisk av en auktoritet på området. Själva museikonceptet skapades av museiföreningarna själva och därigenom kunde och kan de också själva sätta agendan för vad som är autentiskt. Tidvis samstämmer det med övriga auktoriteters bild, ibland inte till exempel vad det gäller tidsepoksbedömning. Det kan också uppstå värdekonflikter i vad föreningarna vill visa som när den kommersiella eller accessoriska verksamheten i form av souvenirförsäljning och kaféverksamhet marknadsförs på samma yta som den historiska miljön. I flera av dessa fall försöker föreningarna att anpassa att förändringarna till den befintliga miljön genom att de utförs i historiserande stil. På så sätt kan de i bästa fall uppfattas som något autentiskt.

Hantverkets autenticitet : Traditionell kunskap som kulturarv i Skansens bokbinderiverkstad

Denna uppsats handlar om autenticiteten i bokbinderiverkstaden på Skansen som immateriellt kulturarv. I uppsatsen analyseras hur autenticitet förmedlas i hantverket och hur det skapas autentiska upplevelser på platsen. Autenticiteten bevaras i hantverket och förmedlas och kommuniceras av hantverkarna. Detta förmedlingssätt förändras över tid. Autenticiteten överfördes mellan generationer genom de yrkesverksamma hantverkarna. Detta sätt analyseras inom dagens globala kontext, genom att jämföra med överföringen av hantverkskunskap inom japansk immateriellt kulturarv. Skansen är idag mer medveten om hantverkets kunskap och autenticitetsöverföring i museiverksamheten. Deras medvetenhet är ett sätt att bevara hantverkets autenticitet och att anpassa det till förändringar i samhället.

The following thesis examine the former homes of Charlotte Berlin and Wilhelmina von Hallwyl, two women who in the turn of 20th century donated their homes and collections to be museums. The purpose of this essay is to examine how Charlotte Berlin’s Museum and the Hallwyl museum work with musealization and authenticity.Both Charlotte and Wilhelmina lived their life in a changing time, where emigration, industrialization and urbanization took place. They are both women from the upper-middle class but with differences such as economic ones which has an effect of the collection and the size of their homes. Further distinctions between them is that Wilhelmina was married and Charlotte was not. Wilhelmina lived in the capital of Sweden, Charlotte in the small town called Ystad. Their similarities is found in their collections of clocks, clothes, paintings and books but most of all in their determination to make their homes museums once they were gone. They sought to make sure that their changing time could be seen through their collection. By examine how this is visible in the rooms they left 137behind, it is possible to see the relationship between the props and the authentic objects. The signs of it now being a museum, as cordons and glass stands, collaborates with the presence of the former inhabitants as well as movemements, seen through objects like chairs placed slightly obliquely. This essay also establish a new term called affective authenticity, which describe and develop the sensation of the past, the relation between the imagi-nation and the reality and the connection between people, objects and the milieu, with the importance that every-thing does not have to be all authentic, but has to mediate it. This is a two year’s master thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.

Text utan kontext : en granskning av kyrkobeskrivningar utifrån forskning om antijudiska motiv i svenska kyrkobyggnader

This study has a threefold aim:  to make a theological contextualisation of four medieval anti-Jewish motifs in Christian iconography represented in churches in Sweden and to study how these motifs has been described and contextualised in guidebooks and other material written for the interested public from post-war to recent years. The study also explores the role of heritagisation and musealisation of the church buildings in relation to how the motifs are described in the material. There is also an underlying, constructive aim: to suggest how The Church of Sweden can work with these motifs in theological reflection and historical presentations to the public concerning this part of the cultural heritage. The motifs analysed are The Judensau, Ecclesia and Synagoga, Cain and a motif illustrating a medieval legend about the funeral of the Virgin Mary. They were all painted in Swedish churches in a time when there were no Jewish settlements in the area. The study argues that the iconography can be interpreted as an expression of othering and that the four motifs can all be theologically contextualised by using Jesper Svartvik’s threefold typology of Christian anti-Jewish discourse. The study further shows that very few of the texts in the guidebooks and other books in the material describes the motifs and contextualises them theologically.  The study suggests that this can be related to the more than hundred years old heritagisation- and musealisation process in The Church of Sweden which has created a twofold and split role of the church as both manager of the religious mission and of the cultural heritage.   It has not been the primary aim of the church to theologically contextualise the cultural heritage. New questions concerning the motifs arise in today’s multicultural and multireligious society. The study suggests that the church can approach the part of the cultural heritage which today is seen as problematic from David Lowenthal’s concept of an informed acceptance and tolerance of the past in order to be able to take responsibility for the future in dialogue with others.

The aim of this thesis is to identify what actions of change museums have taken to adjust to the ebb and flow of societal norms and values. The empirical evidence is based on three case studies of objects in three museums: the Birka warrior from grave Bj-581 in the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm, the G’psgolox totem pole in the Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm, and the Benin bronzes in the Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm and the British Museum in London. Through observations of objects and exhibitions in combination with interviews with museum professionals and researchers, an overall picture is created that shows traces of regulation but also remaining attributes from older times. Through theories of structuration, authorized heritage discourse, norm critique and postcolonial ideas, we highlight the strong connections between social structures, social relations and authorized governing groups that exist in the process of disentangling. With this thesis, we intend to highlight how the phenomenon of change is portrayed and managed in museums. Museums in the west were foremost established during a time when nationalistic and colonial ideals characterized societal norms and the work that took place within museums. As a result of the preservation and presentation of the national identity, museums were often attributed with a character of identity making. Over time, the world has changed and so have the norms within society. Aspects of ethics and morals have become increasingly incorporated into discussions about power and governance. In line with these changes, museums have also had to change to stay relevant in their time. The museums hold to this day some of the old nationalistic and colonial ideals which they were built upon. The old ideals can be identified within the museums’ exhibitions, and because of this, clashes may occur between older and newer norms and values in the process of change, within which transparency becomes an important key element.  This is a two year master's thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.
