The present work intends to collaborate for the enrichment of the discussion on religion and it’s relations with the various aspects of social life. Here we sought to understand the points of view prevailing in Protestant circles and within the missionary movement in the early twentieth century. We sought to do this through primary sources produced by Erasmo Braga and by the committees of the Congress on Christian Work in Latin America, the Congress of Panama (1916) and also by reading works about the history of the Protestant missionary movement, the history of Protestantism, the cooperative movement, the theologies being developed in the twentieth century, biographical works about Erasmo Braga, as well as works of Brazilian and the United States general histories. Our intention was to establish the relationship between the religious movement, the social, economic and historical issues in progress at the time, and to understand this issues influence over the missionary movement and the reactions of this movement and of Erasmo Braga to the raised variables.

Peixoto, Esdras Gusmao de Holanda 06 October 2008 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 dissetacao_esdras_peixoto.pdf: 748933 bytes, checksum: 7fcb8b33d2598b452a4dfdd2b1bac849 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-10-06 / This dissertation attempts to investigate the discontinuities and continuities in the theology, mentality and world-vision of Brazilian pentecostals. To that end it has as its special object of study the musical repertoire of the pentecostal communities, evaluating the internal evolution of that which is sung in the worship services and other meetings. Music is the principal means by which the behavior of the faithful is moulded. Since it is a product derived from the surrounding culture, and so not completely controlled by the composer, pentecostal hymnology both reflects and inculcates symbols which direct the universe which its followers inhabit. Gilbert Durand's book, The Theory of the Imaginary, provides the hermeneutical basis for our interpretation of the symbolic as present in the hymn-books both of classic pentecostalism and of post-pentecostalism, and we apply Durand's methodology to the images present in the pentecostal hymns. As to its epistemology, this study is both transdisciplinary and comprehensive, as well as taking into account current sociological trends present in what is known as post-modernity / O presente trabalho procura investigar as rupturas e continuidades na teologia, mentalidade e visão de mundo dos pentecostais brasileiros.

Les fondements des Laïcités en Afrique centrale à l'épreuve du protestantisme évangélique : Cameroun, Congo, Gabon et République Démocratique du Congo / The foundations of Laïcités in Central Afrique to the test of Evangelical Protestantism : Cameroon, Congo, Gabon and The Democratic Republic of Congo

Bucumi, Guy 09 July 2018 (has links)
The Berlin Conference of 1884 laid the foundations for relationship between religions and states in Central Africa by instituting the "civilizing mission". In this region, those relationships have always been ambiguous. According to the periods, there was collaboration, mutual support, coexistence, mutual ignorance, oppositions and even persecutions. The relationship between religious missions and the colonial administration and between the Catholic Church and the young independent nations, were a perfect illustration. The “wave” of democratization of the 90’s allowed the adoption of new fundamentals laws similar with the French constitution of 1958 took as a model. The new central African constitutions introduced a new principle, the secularism of state, in the same spirit of the French constitutions of 1946 and 1958. The democratic process also allowed pluralism both political and religious. About religious field, the consecration of religious freedom has promoted the implantation of evangelical movement which has then, knew a rapid growth. The issue of relationships between Evangelical Churches and States in this region of Africa is becoming increasingly important, because of the growing success of this new religious movement and its proximity with political powers. This is a new, recent, rapidly changing situation that challenges many political, institutional, legal and social situations. At the legal level, the failure of the secular model adopted call for a need to make a large part of African custom in the conception of legal texts, which would then allow the construction of a new "African" secularism.

Family values and child care during the Reformation era: a comparative study of Hutterites and some other German Protestants

Harada, Mary January 1968 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The purpose of this dissertation is to compare family and educational values and practices of the Hutterite Brethren during the Reformation era with those of the main-stream of German-speaking Protestantism. Family and educational concepts and developments and the progress of elementary-vernacular education within both magisterial Protestantism and evangelical Anabaptism are described and their similarities and differences made clear. The Hutterites, who with the Mennonites constitute the two major groups of evangelical Anabaptism, are given particular attention since only they withdrew from the world to live in closed communistic societies. Within these communities they exhibited certain differences in their pattern of life from that of their contemporaries. [TRUNCATED]

The Swedish school: Secular or characterized by christianity?

Andersson, Lina, Merhi, Rim January 2021 (has links)

Les enjeux socio-politiques de l'action sociale et humanitaire dans la sphère religieuse : l'agence Youth with a Mission en France et au Brésil / Socio-political issues of social and humanitarian action in the religious sphere : Youth with a Mission agency in France and Brazil

Goulart, Denise 04 June 2018 (has links)
This research presents a comparative study of aspects of social action and forms of expression within the religious field within Brazil and France. The study focuses on the activities of Youth With a Mission (YWAM), an evangelical charismatic missionary organisation founded in the United States by Loren Cunningham in 1960 and now present in both France and Brazil. Through interviews and comparative observations of the interpersonal dynamics and parachurch proselytizing actions of the missionaries, the aim of the study is to understand the relative impact of the country contexts on the proselytizing strategies of the organisation within its social work. We also analyse the role of the YWAM as social actors and state partners in the social sector, comparing the differing country context of secularism and the welfare state. In this analysis, we consider the issue of public-private collaboration produced by the convergence between YWAM's actions and the distinct legal-administrative contexts in Brazil and France. How do these convergences create innovative forms of social interactions, in terms of religion, social action, and communication? Beyond the socio-political domain, this thesis aims to study the immersion of youths within religious institutions as faith professionals by leaving an ordinary life for a religious commitment. The research analyses who these youths are, and how their family backgrounds and personal trajectories have motivated them to adopt this mode of life.

Race, Religion, And Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment: A Test Of Attribution Theory

Schlaupitz, Sheila M 16 December 2003 (has links)
The present study attempts to provide a more thorough understanding of public attitudes toward capital punishment. Two theories are tested toward this end, utilizing a random sample taken from the jury pool in Hillsborough County, Florida. First, An indirect test of reference group theory demonstrates the degree to which faith group, religiosity, and race affect public attitudes toward the death penalty. Surprisingly, there is little, albeit mixed, support for reference group theory as it attempts to explain attitudes toward capital punishment. Using the relationships between religion and capital punishment attitudes that we presumed would emerge from the test of reference group theory, we developed a processual model to more accurately describe how the relationships between religion and capital punishment operates. A test of attribution theory provided the vehicle through which this processual model could be tested. Although it seemed that the model was dependent on significant findings between the relationships in reference group theory, this was not the case. Indeed, we found many relationships between certain dimensions of religion and capital punishment attitudes that were consistent with previous research. Moreover, this piece of research is among the first to examine the effect of possessing a more progressive theological emphasis on death penalty attitudes. It addresses important theoretical and empirical questions regarding the direct and indirect relationships between religion and capital punishment attitudes.

Ett ständigt pausat krig? : En studie om attityder i Nordirland av den första generationen efter ”the Troubles” / An ever paused war? : A study about attitudes in Northern Ireland from the first generation after “the Troubles”

Arvidsson, Rasmus January 2012 (has links)
Ireland had, by the year of 1998, been an island of war and conflict to some extent for almost 1000 years. The northeast part of the island, called Northern Ireland, had been under British domination for over 25 years when “the Troubles” ended by the year of 1998. This essay aims towards explaining how the first generation after “the Troubles” has been shaped in terms of political and religious beliefs and attitudes in the society of Belfast. Furthermore, this study seeks to understand the complex nature of the peace agreement and the political consociational power-sharing system that permeates Belfast and it’s people. By conduct interviews with six, picked young persons from Belfast, this essay will, in a qualitative and theoretical way, explain what, and even more so, why the prevailing attitudes exists, and which influences they are derived from. By a socialisation and Marxist theory, these articulated attitudes will be explained, compared and analysed on a deep level.
