What is the Hidden Web?: The development, characteristics and social significance of anonymous communication on the hidden web

Papsdorf, Christian 27 April 2016 (has links)
More than two-and-a-half million people currently use the Tor network to communicate anonymously via the Internet and gain access to online media that are not accessible using standard Internet technology. This sphere of communication can be described as the hidden web. In part because this phenomenon is very recent, the subject has scarcely been studied in the social sciences. It is therefore the purpose of this paper to answer four fundamental questions: What is the hidden web? What characterises the communication sphere of the hidden web in contrast to the “normal Internet”? Which reasons can be identified to explain the development of the hidden web as a new communication sphere? And, finally, what is the social significance of the hidden web?:1 Introduction 2 Linguistic differentiation of the hidden web and an overview of the literature 3 Characteristics of communication via the hidden web 4 The creation of the hidden web as a response to the development of the visible web 5 The social significance of the hidden web 6 Summary and prospects / Über zweieinhalb Millionen Menschen nutzen gegenwärtig das Tor Network, um anonym über das Internet zu kommunizieren und Zugriff auf Online-Medien zu erhalten, die mit gewöhnlicher Internettechnik nicht nutzbar ist. Und welche gesellschaftliche Bedeutung kommt dem Hidden Web schließlich zu?:1 Introduction 2 Linguistic differentiation of the hidden web and an overview of the literature 3 Characteristics of communication via the hidden web 4 The creation of the hidden web as a response to the development of the visible web 5 The social significance of the hidden web 6 Summary and prospects

A Comparison of Microarray Analyses: A Mixed Models Approach Versus the Significance Analysis of Microarrays

Stephens, Nathan Wallace 20 November 2006 (has links) (PDF)
DNA microarrays are a relatively new technology for assessing the expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously. Researchers hope to find genes that are differentially expressed by hybridizing cDNA from known treatment sources with various genes spotted on the microarrays. The large number of tests involved in analyzing microarrays has raised new questions in multiple testing. Several approaches for identifying differentially expressed genes have been proposed. This paper considers two: (1) a mixed models approach, and (2) the Signiffcance Analysis of Microarrays.

An investigation of the relationship between online activity on Studi.se and academic grades of newly arrived immigrant students : An application of educational data mining

Menon, Akash, Islam, Nahida January 2017 (has links)
This study attempts to analyze the impact of an online educational resource on academic performances among newly arrived immigrant students in Sweden between the grade six to nine in the Swedish school system. The study focuses on the web based educational resource called Studi.se made by Komplementskolan AB.The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between academic performance and using Studi.se. Another purpose was to see what other factors that can impact academic performances. The study made use of the data mining process, Cross Industry Standard for Data Mining (CRISP-DM), to understand and prepare the data and then create a regression model that is evaluated. The regression model tries predict the dependent variable of grade based on the independent variables of Studi.se activity, gender and years in Swedish schools. The used data set includes the grades in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and religion of newly arrived students in Sweden from six municipalities that have access to Studi.se. The data used also includes metrics of the student’s activity on Studi.se.The results show negative correlation between grade and gender of the student across all subjects. In this report, the negative correlation means that female students perform better than male students. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between number of years a student has been in the same school and their academic grade. The study could not conclude a statistically significant relationship between the activity on Studi.se and the students’ academic grade.Additional explanatory independent variables are needed to make a predictive model as well as investigating alternative regression models other than multiple linear regression. In the sample, a majority of the students have little or no activity on Studi.se despite having free access to the resource through the municipality.

Лексика обозначений чисел в китайских объявлениях и вывесках и способы их перевода для туристов : магистерская диссертация / Vocabulary of numbers in Chinese advertisements and signs and ways to translate them for tourists

Liang, Y. January 2024 (has links)
Relevance in the context of the modern rapid development of globalization, language and cultural exchanges are becoming more frequent. In this context, public signage and billboards, as important means of transmitting cultural information, play a vital role in promoting international tourism and cultural understanding. Effective language translation, especially in tourist centers, can not only help tourists better understand the local culture, but also improve the overall impression of tourists. Therefore the study of the translation of digital terms into publicly available signage is of great importance for improving intercultural exchanges. The purpose of the study is to in-depth study the use of numbers and methods of their translation in public signs in China and Russia. By analyzing the differences in the semantics and use of numerals in two languages, this study attempts to identify the complexity and difficulties of translating numerals in intercultural communication.

Psychological significance of shaving hair as a ritual during mourning within the Ndebele culture

Tshoba, Zanele Margaret 11 1900 (has links)
The study examined and explored the psychological significance of shaving hair as a ritual during mourning within the Ndebele culture in Mamelodi, Pretoria. The focus was on rituals performed or conducted during the mourning process that will be useful in an attempt to reach a state of healing and restoration. The study explored what meaning the participants attach to the rituals. Through this exploration; a deeper understanding of the value of rituals was developed. The qualitative research method, particularly Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used. Snowball sampling was used to identify participants who had lost their loved and who had gone through mourning for more than six months. In total, ten participants were interviewed for this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in the mother tongue of the participants in order to allow them to express themselves in the most ultimate way they know and understand. Thematic content analysis was used to extract themes that were dominant across participants. The study was useful as it could be incorporated into the study of psychology specifically from the African epistemological standpoint. Even though the rituals might be practiced amongst the black African community, there is not much literature that focuses mainly on the specific rituals and their significance. This study could also be useful in terms of exposing this knowledge to persons who might not be exposed to this specific ritual of shaving hair due to cultural differences. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Poststrukturalismus

Schwanebeck, Wieland 25 April 2017 (has links) (PDF)
