Decisions: Political Theology and the Challenges of Postmodernity

Brown, Derek January 2020 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Andrew Prevot / Decisions: Political Theology and the Challenges of Postmodernity, argues that political theologies are both partially responsible for and responsive to the intrinsically related problems of racism, capitalism, and essentialist metaphysical thinking. Relying on dialectical materialist and post-structuralist theories, Decisions critically engages a wide range of classical and contemporary figures such as Karl Marx, Søren Kierkegaard, Carl Schmitt, Jacques Derrida, James Cone, Chantal Mouffe, Cornel West, Martin Hågglund, and Karl ove Knausgaard. These engagements are attentive to not only the particular theoretical and political decisions any one thinker makes, but also to the ways in which “decision” is itself understood as an important theoretical and political category. Although “decisionism” has become a popular motif in contemporary political theology, the concept remains under theorized. This is unfortunate, because contemporary ontological racisms and exploitative market structures aim to prevent political decisions: ontological racism decides in advance the essential “racial” characteristics of a person and market economies ensure that the distribution of goods is “decided” by the so- called invisible hand of the market. Moreover, both racisms and capitalism can imply an underlying modern metaphysics of substance and essence. While the postmodern critique of metaphysics is often read as a challenge to religion, this reading suggests that postmodernity presents an opportunity for the reemergence of an historical and politically engaged form of religion. Such an emancipatory and non-metaphysical approach can be found throughout various religious traditions, but is especially prominent amongst black political theologians working out of the Christian tradition. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2020. / Submitted to: Boston College. A critica de Kierkegaard a cristandade : o individuo e a comunidade

Paula, Marcio Gimenes de 16 May 2005 (has links)
Orientador : Oswaldo Giacoia Junior / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-04T06:20:19Z (GMT). O quarto capítulo pretende avaliar a polêmica kierkegaardiana contra a cristandade propriamente dita. The purpose of this research is to study the question concerning the individual and the community in Kierkegaard¿s works (1813-1855), specially in his criticism of Christendom. There is in this polemic a religiosous and theological face, but there is a philosophical criticism too, that can be better analysed second the perspective of philosophy of religion. The danish author is a post hegelian in his cronology and thematic. In this way, his interpretion is researched here, with these previous delimitations. The introduction give, second Karl Löwith¿s interpretation, the philosophical and historical context of the post hegelianism and his criticism on the question of Christendom (and Christianity). Kierkegaard is one of these thinkers. The first chapter analyses the problem concerning objective true in Christianity. This question is researched in the first part of Concluding Unscientific Post-Scriptum to Philosophical Fragments, where it is firstly proposed. The second chapter studies the question concerning the individual and the universal in Kierkegaard¿s works. The work analyses specially for this question is The Book on Adler. In the same way and thematic, the third chapter studies, in this discussion between individual and comunity in Kierkegaard¿s works, central questions of the Christianity: questions like martyr, apostle, genius and heroi. The works specially researched here are the articles of The Fatherland, The Moment and the discourse The changelessness of God. The aim is to prove that the kierkegaardian polemic with the Christendom was a specially objective. This research is concluded, with the analyses of the dialetical relations between community and individual in Kierkegaard¿s works. Many Kierkegaard¿s works was used here. Kierkegaard´s work, starting from the critical dialogue present in the kierkegaardian apprehension of Hegel´s philosophical effort. This investigation searches to show the connections presented in the concept of paradox between faith, language and history, having as a background Kierkegaard´s dialogue with the hegelian categories. Considering that the center of Kierkegaard´s theorical opposition to Hegel is a critique to historical freedom´s formalization from objectivist criterions, we intend to explicit, by means of Hegel and Kierkegaard´s dialogue with Hans Georg Hamann, that the language´s apprehension is an experience of freedom´s exteriorization. The starting point of this Kierkegaard´s opposition is grounded in a lecture incompatible with an objectivation turned out to be autonomous, whose historical-referencial element is the State: this starting point will show itself nucleated in the spirit´s distinct apprehensions realized by both authors / A presente pesquisa investiga o conceito de paradoxo na obra de S. A. Kierkegaard a partir do dialogo crítico presente na apreensão kierkegaardiana do esforço filosófico de Hegel.

These two issues are discussed by him in La Maladie the La Mort, under the pseudonym Anti-Climacus, and in Le concept d'Angoisse under the pseudonym of Vigilius Haufniensis. Both the despair, as the existential anguish are real problems which, sooner or later, the individual, as possessor of mind, hopelessly experience and are therefore aspects of the human condition. Kierkegaard understood the desperation as a deadly disease and identifies it with sin, whose faith is the antidote. Already the anguish is understood as the feeling that accompanies all human decisions / A presente dissertação propõe-se a investigar, com esteio em pesquisa teórica e bibliográfica, o desespero e a angústia, tendo como base a filosofia de Kierkegaard (1.813-1.855).

Encountering the state : prolegomena to a subjective approach to understanding the relationship between subject and State

Brown, Ruairidh John January 2017 (has links)
Demanding Taxation, disciplining, and even at times requiring the sacrifice of life, the State is undoubtedly one of the most influential and important structures within a subject's existence. Nonetheless, despite these great demands, very few subjects actually choose or construct the State they inhabit. On the contrary subjects rather find themselves born into these great structures which transcend their existence. Consequently understanding how subjects come to learn about, and relate to, these great structures they are thrown into is vital for both an understanding of politics and the human condition generally. In this thesis I will explore an alternative approach to investigating the subject and State relationship: The ‘Subjective approach'. Inspired by the thought of Danish Philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, the aim of this approach will be to explore the encounters that the subject has with the State, what perception of the State is given to subjects in these encounters, and how the relationship between subject and State grows out of such encounters. The aim of this thesis is therefore to provide prolegomena to such an approach. I shall aim to outline why such an approach should be considered for investigating subject and State relations, and explore how one may begin articulating such an approach.

Kristendomskritik : En religionsfilosofisk tolkningsanalys av Friedrich Nietzsches och Sören Kierkegaards författarskap / Criticism in Christianity : A religious philosophical interpretive analysis of Friedrich Nietzsche's and Soren Kierkegaard's authorship

Blom, Niklas January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the criticism of Christianity expressed by Friedrich Nietzsche and Soren Kierkegaard, particularly in relation to the question of moral action. These author's work were both published in the 19th Century. To analyze their written works, a hermeneutic approach is assumed. The Concepts pf slave morality, nihilism, and the disticntion between Christendom and Christianity are emphasized in the previous research and are here used analytically to contrast the author's works. The results of the study reveals both clear similarities and differences between Nietzsche and Kierkegaard's thought. The main difference lies in their views on the Church as an institutional doctrine and the impact of western moral principles on divine and human reason. The main similaraity is the emphasis both authors place on the individual's free will. The analysis also highlights the problematic nature of prevailing principles and the Christian image of God in the author's works. The concept of free will is seen as most central to their arguments, partilcarly in relation to wheter mankind's deire for the Christian God is rational or not. In conclusion to the result, the study also discusses the implications pf the study for teaching about philosophy of religion in the classroom. Therefore, a discussion regarding didactics is held to suggest how this subject matter could be utilized in a teaching context, espacially to encourage critical thinking and reflection.

Diagnosing modernity: Walker Percy's The Moviegoer as more than a southern Sickness Unto Death

Unknown Date (has links)
The work of physician-turned-writer Walker Percy marks an important development in the history of Southern literature. The author's first novel, The Moviegoer, moves beyond previous consideration of what it meant to be a native of the region by capturing the mindset of modernity rooted in the philosophical movement of existentialism. Embracing the work of S²ren Kierkegaard allows Percy to articulate how his protagonist, Binx Bolling, moves towards a sense of purpose in life. Previously adrift due to the contending forces present in the modern mind, the author indicates how an existentially active individual can achieve a sense of direction through the work of not only Kierkegaard, but also Gabriel Marcel. There are certain phenomena present in the text that allow one to temporarily achieve some sense of solace within an inscrutably secularized existence. However, Percy indicates that the modern individual must ultimately find significance through an intersubjective engagement with another. / by Bryan Salgado. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.

Guarnieri, Maria Cristina Mariante 12 December 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-25T19:20:45Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Maria Cristina Mariante Guarnieri.pdf: 1263043 bytes, checksum: 5a8109dd8162f2900b878d027f998959 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-12-12 / This thesis studies angst as a religious philosophical concept beside the importance of the religious thinker as a comprehension method for religion. Regarding this, it takes as object the religious thinkers Franz Rosenzweig, Sören A. Kierkegaard and the wise man Qohelet, of the Old Testament, whose reflections indicate the presence of angst. The hypothesis that guides this work is that, in these thinkers, this presence, due to the relationship with the transcendent, manifests itself as conceptual tension which produces knowledge. In view of this hypothesis, the intention is to discuss the possibility of building knowledge from religion itself. Angst, then, is the affection that, in these authors, indicates a tension between immanence and transcendence, realizing the human finitude and the infinite possibility, the absolute lack of meaning and the establishment of a multiplicity of meanings. It is a productive agony that serves as hard task in the search for knowledge. Giving priority to the subjectivity and the concreteness of the existence, the authors here worked make an effort to understand the human being, unique is his or her suffering. The angst as key for thinking about the human condition is born from the perception of its own aporia, discovery starting from the first inquiry about the meaning of life / Essa tese estuda a angústia como conceito filosófico religioso ao lado da importância do pensador religioso como método de compreensão da religião.
