Beginning with his High Mass written in 1994, popular Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström modeled multiple compositions after famous canonical works using the same texts and/or instrumentation. Sandström wants to be compared to the greatest, specifically in how a twenty-first century composer responds to a text set , in the case of J.S. Bach's , over 250 years ago. His setting of Matthäuspassion (MP), which uses the same libretto as J.S. Bach, is his most extensive non-operatic work, one he considers his most significant, and likely his last work based on a preexisting model. This study 1) examines the influence of J.S. Bach's MP on Sandström's setting in the use of characters and chorales, 2) illustrates Sandström's compositional language in MP based on recent studies on his choral music, 3) describes his use of musical symbolism, and 4) discusses his religious and spiritual motivations behind the work, as well as his preferred uses in performance.

The thesis contains a survey of numerical tools for studying thermomechanical interactions of a two-phase system contained in a domain with an upper bound- ary that forms a free surface. The enthalpy diffused-interface formulation is used for an approximation of the phase change interface and the computing algorithm is benchmarked against an analytical solution of the Stefan problem. Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian kinematical description of the continuum is applied to over- come the difficulty in the form of the free surface. The validity of the approach is examined on a thermal convection benchmark problem. 1

I en retorisk analys av den svenska, diskursiva konstruktionen av coronapandemin, så som den tog form i politisk kommunikation och samhällsopinion, argumenterar jag för att diskursens möjlighet att uppfattas som rationell och saklig i själva verket var högst beroende av en rad mytiska idéer. Dessa idéer kretsade kring en historisk, västerländsk framåtrörelse, en uråldrig kamp mellan ljus och mörker, det dunkla som något hotfullt, synden och botgöringen som vid domen skulle leda folket till frälsning eller lidande, samt det svenska samhällets äkta kärna. Sammantaget kom de mytiska idéer som präglade diskursen att i grunden begränsa den svenska invånarens diskursiva rörelseutrymme, och därmed också möjligheten att anlägga alternativa riktningar eller göra reellt motstånd. I uppsatsen diskuterar jag även hur och varför den frihet som invånarna åtnjöt snarare kom att bli en väsentlig komponent i ett maskineri, som inte bara genom disciplinering höll nere smittspridningen, utan också gjorde invånarna till användbara redskap i upprätthållandet av en politisk legitimitet. I denna uppsats problematiserar jag därför både bilden av den pandemiska diskursen som ett i grunden rationellt, sakligt och gemensamt refererande till en verklig händelseutveckling och bilden av att frånvaron av tvingande smittskyddsåtgärder automatiskt skänker invånarna en större frihet.

This study explores the topic of music theory pedagogy in conjunction with the Kodály concept of music education and its North-American adaptation by Lois Choksy. It investigates the compatibility of the Kodály Method with post-secondary instruction in tonal harmony, using a theoretical framework derived from Kodály’s methodology and implemented as a teaching strategy for the dominant-seventh chord. The customary presentation of this concept is authenticated with an empirical case study involving four university professors. Subsequently, Kodály’s four-step instructional process informs a comparative analysis of five university-level textbooks that evaluates the sequential placement of V7, examines the procedure by which it is presented, and considers the inclusion of correlated musical excerpts. Although divergent from traditional approaches to tonal harmony, Kodály’s principles and practices are pedagogically effective. By progressing from concrete to abstract, preceding symbolization with extensive musical experience, conceptual understandings are not only intellectualized, but are developed and internalized.

The semiconducting compounds CdTe and CdZnTe have important applications in high-energy radiation detectors and as substrates for infrared devices. The materials offer large band gaps, high resistivity, and excellent charge transport properties; however all of these properties rely on very precise control of the material composition. Growing bulk crystals by the travelling heater method (THM) offers excellent compositional control and fewer defects compared to gradient freezing, but it is also much slower and more expensive. A particular challenge is the current need to grow new crystals onto existing seeds of similar size and quality. Simulations and experiments are used in this work to investigate the feasibility of growing these materials by THM without the use of large seed crystals. A new fixed-grid, multiphase finite element model was developed based on the level set method and used to calculate the mass transport regime and interface shapes inside the growth ampoule. The diffusivity of CdTe in liquid tellurium was measured through dissolution experiments, which also served to validate the model. Simulations of tapered THM growth find conditions similar to untapered growth with interface shapes that are sensitive to strong thermosolutal convection. Favourable growth conditions are achievable only if convection can be controlled. In preliminary experiments, tapered GaSb crystals were successfully grown by THM and large CdTe grains were produced by gradient freezing. Beginning with this seed material, 25 mm diameter CdTe and CdZnTe crystals were grown on 10 mm diameter seeds, and 65 mm diameter CdTe on 25 mm seeds. Unseeded THM growth was also investigated, as well as ampoule rotation and a range of thermal conditions and ampoule surface coatings. Outward growth beyond one or two centimeters was achieved only at small diameters and included secondary grains and twin defects; however, limited outward growth of larger seeds and agreement between experimental and numerical results suggest that tapered growth may be achievable in the future. Er begreift Geschlecht als Effekt von Interaktionen und lehnt sich dabei an Garfinkels ethnomethodologisches Konzept der Accountability und der Omnirelevanz von Geschlecht an. Aus institutioneller Perspektive wird die Möglichkeit der Neutralisierung der Kategorie Geschlecht betont. Forschungsperspektivisch ist Geschlecht auf seine konkrete Relevanzsetzung in Interaktionen unter der Bedingung unterschiedlicher kultureller Konfigurationen und institutioneller Arrangements zu untersuchen ("kontextuelle Kontingenz").

(in English) This thesis is a summary of opinions coming from 20th century Czech art historians which wrote about baroque architectural space. Based on reading texts from them I have chosen three cardinal themes characterizing the research of baroque architectural space: tendencies to emancipate architectural space, emphasis on the time based experience of architectural space and interest in luminary qualities of architectural space. In the chapter about time based experience of architectural space I am dealing with the illusion of movement that creates baroque architectural space, with the parallel between baroque architecture and baroque musical compositions and with the principles of designing the so called "moving space" by using illusionary splines. I find a tendency to describe baroque architectural space in a poetical way by Czech art historians due to the process of perceiving architecture happening through the interaction of the human body arrangement. I am focused on philosophy of Martin Heidegger and Hans Georg Gadamer where the support of metaphoric description of baroque architectural space can be found. In the final part of this thesis I write about the symbolic qualities of sacral baroque architectural space. I consider the spatial relationship "above" and "down" as an interpretation...

This thesis traces the shift from liberal to neoliberal education from the nineteenth century to the present day, in order to provide a rich and previously underdeveloped narrative of value in higher education in England. Rather than attempting to justify the value of the humanities within the presiding economic frameworks, or writing a defence against market rationalism, this thesis offers an original contribution through an immersion in historical, financial, and critical debates concerning educational policy. Drawing upon close reading and discursive analysis, this thesis constructs a nuanced map of the intersections of value in the humanities. The discussion encompasses an exploration of policymaking practices, scientific discourse, mediated representations, and public cultural life. The structure of the thesis is as follows. The introductory chapter outlines the overarching methodology by defining the contemporary period of this project (2008-14), establishing relevant scholarship, and drawing out the correspondences between the nineteenth century and the present day. Chapter one establishes a history of the Payment by Results approach in policymaking, first established in the Revised Code of Education (1862) and recently re-introduced in the reforms of the Browne Report (2010). Understanding the predominance of such short-term and quantitative policy is essential for detailing how value is articulated. Chapter two reconsiders the two cultures debate. In contrast to the misrepresentative, yet pervasive, perception that the sciences and the humanities are fundamentally in opposition, I propose a more nuanced history of these disciplines. Chapter three addresses fictional representations of the humanities within literature in order to establish a vantage point from which to assess alternative routes for valuation beyond economic narratives. The final chapter scrutinises the rise of the impact criterion within research assessment and places it within a wider context of market-led cultural policy (1980-90s). This thesis argues that reflecting on Victorian legacies of economism and public accountability enables us to reconsider contemporary valuation culture in higher education. This analytical framework is of benefit to future academic studies interested in the marketisation and valuation of culture, alongside literary studies that focus on the relationship between higher education, the individual, and the state.
