Att växa upp i missbruk : vuxna barns upplevda aktörskap / Growing Up With Parental Substance Abuse : Adult Children's Experiences of Agency

Lundmark, Jenny January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine how adult children of parents with substance abuse describe their agency during childhood. The study was conducted by examining podcasts on substance abuse using qualitative content analysis. Eight different podcast episodes were included in which adult children describe their experiences of growing up in a family environment with alcohol and/or drugs. The focus of the analysis was how the adult children position themselves in their story in terms of agency and constraint. The main findings of the study was that the adult children described a range of experiences but with a focus on their vulnerability. The adult children described how they were subjected to uncertainty, neglect and sometimes violence throughout their childhood. At the same time they also positioned themselves as competent agents in their recounts. In their narratives they described how they used different strategies to control their situation and  complex process of disclosure. The strategies were also described as meaningful and used for a specific purpose even though they were sometimes understood as problematic later on. However  the adult children also positioned themselves as powerless in their narratives as they often experienced that their agency was constrained by their subordinated position as a child. An important recurrent experience was that despite their attempts to tell of their situation, it rarely led to a change. The adult children described several barriers to disclosure and how they often felt that nobody listened to them.

Each life is a life worth living” : Adults’ Experiences of growing up alongside a sibling with intellectual disability

Gehlen, Johanna, Gunnarsson, Nina January 2022 (has links)
Growing up with a disabled sibling can involve real challenges. Despite this, siblings of children with disabilities have been a forgotten group within social work. This study ́s aim was to investigate how adults describe their upbringing alongside a sibling with intellectual disabilities (IF). Focusing specifically on managing difficult situations and emotions that emerge in relation to the siblings' disability. Seven qualitative interviews were done with adults who grew up alongside an IF sibling. Results show that an upbringing alongside an IF sibling is both enriching and loving. Siblinghood involves certain responsibilities, sets of emotional worry and lack of engagement from parents. Strategies of coping/managing with difficult situations and emotions were identified. The findings were discussed in relation to the KASAM and Coping theories as well as against earlier research. The study shows that further research is needed on persons who grow up alongside an IF sibling.

Barns resiliens och copingstrategier vid en uppväxt med föräldrar med substansbrukssyndrom : En kvalitativ studie utifrån ett retrospektivt perspektiv / Children's resilience and coping strategies when growing up with parents with substance use disorders : A qualitative study from a retrospective perspective

Höglund, Maja, Jartelius, Annelie January 2023 (has links)
Compared to children who did not grow up in a household with substance abuse, children with parents who abused drugs could have an increased risk of psychosocial and emotional issues. The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge about the experience of children who grew up with at least one parent with substance use disorder, specifically how they utilised resilience and coping strategies in order to reach an adequate psychosocial development. The method used was to examine retrospective autobiographies written by people who grew up with at least one parent with substance use disorder. Earlier studies have found that some children who face great obstacles growing up posses a resilience that protect them from developing mental health issues or other abnormal behaviour. The aim of this study is to examine how resilience develop in some children despite challenging upbringings, as well as what type of coping strategies these children used in order to cope with their situations. We found that the child’s environment played a crucial role in developing resilience. After school activities, supporting adults, and social interactions with friends helped in creating a sense of worth and belonging. We also found that all children used different coping strategies, however, there was no single coping strategy that stood out as more effective in advancing the child’s psychosocial development.  The findings indicate that a child who grows up with at least one parent with substance use disorder is highly dependent on their resilience. Furthermore, the child’s environment and individual characteristics contribute to the child’s ability to develop resilience and an adequate psychosocial development despite great challenges in their upbringing.

Rosén, Linda, Liljekvist Leijon, Agnes January 2009 (has links)
<p>The aim of this study is to examine the experienced life situations of siblings growing up with a brother or a sister diagnosed with autism. The study is qualitative and therefore suitable to the purpose of studying the informants´ own experiences. Three women and one man, aged between 18-24 years, were interviewed through chatt programs on the Internet. The constituted perspective is phenomenological and the analysis were made by identifying meaning units in the text from the interviews. The theory used to interpret the result is systems theory and more specifically the structual family therapy by Salvador Minuchin. The data was also compared to earlier research. The result showed that the siblings were affected by growing up with a brother or sister with autism. Their experiences were both of positive and negative kind. The findings further showed that the siblings had similar as well as various experiences.</p>

Orsaker till kriminalitet : En studie om tidigare kriminellas livsberättelser / Causes of Crime : A study of former criminals life stories

Finn, Sara, Yilmaz, Kadir January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to gain a greater understanding of some underlying causes of why people commit criminal acts. The general questions of the study are; in what way does the social circle of friends affect the individual’s prerequisites for developing a criminal lifestyle? How can these underlying causes of crime be explained and understood? The questions are answered by semi-structured interviews with five individuals with previous criminal background. With the use of a thematic analysis method the interview material was structured into three themes that have been formulated based on the datasets that have been collected. The analysis is done with the use of previous research and theories of differential association and reinforcements, symbolic interactionism, labeling and social bond. The study shows that the interview participants end up in crime as a result of their growth, school situation and their circle of friends interacted in a negative way. Common to all those interviewed informants is that they had insufficient contact with both parents during childhood. The lack of assurance from the parents was something they instead searched for in their social circle of friends. The informants schooling was consisted of poor school performances, and they often socialized with friends who also misbehaved.

“Alla har ju lite familjeproblem” : En kvalitativ studie av de långsiktiga konsekvenserna av psykiskt våldunder uppväxten / “Everyone Has Some Family Issues” : A qualitative study of the long term consequences of mental abuse duringchildhood

Sebbelov, Maja, Perup, Åsa January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was twofold: the first was to identify long termconsequences in adults who have experienced mental abuse during childhood byanalyzing personal stories. The second purpose was to examine and discuss therole of social work expressed by the individuals. In order to accomplish this, seven personal stories from different podcasts were selected and later comparedwith existing research on the topic. A qualitative and thematic content analysiswas used with the intention of capturing the victims’ experiences of the violence,as well as their view on society’s attempts to intervene. The results showed thatmental abuse during childhood can contribute to later interpersonal issues such asproblems in forming stable relationships due to insecure attachment patterns, andan overall feeling of being in danger. Moreover, the risks of developing mentaldisorders such as depression, anxiety or Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorderwas shown through existing research to be higher in people with a history ofmental abuse. In addition, the knowledge of professionals about the severity ofmental abuse seems to expand but is still inadequate overall. This entails a greatervulnerability for the victims that do seek help, as this comes with the risks ofeither escalating violence due to misguided interventions, or a diminution ofexperiences. In conclusion, the largest obstacle for victims to receive propersupport from society appears to be the nature of the violence; it is hard to detectfrom an outside view and it will more often than not go unnoticed.

Del Toro, Aylin, Samuelsson, Zemone January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to describe and understand the meaning of adult children´s experience of growing up in a family with addiction. The study is based on a lifeworld phenomenological approach where the adult children have been the focus. The data collection consisted of five open interviews, where the adult children gave their experience of their childhood. The result of the study shows that adult children all have experienced the sense of shame/stigma, de-prioritized, a dysfunctional everyday life, a body that reacts and a body that remembers. This has led to various challenges and consequences while growing up, the adult children have handled this differently according to their own abilities and circumstances. It has also resulted in challenges in adulthood, which also have been handled differently depending on the person. Based on the results, it has been possible to understand the importance of preventive work towards families where there is an addiction problem. Something that further needs continuous research to prevent dysfunctional upbringing.

Johansson, Elin January 2012 (has links)

Rite of Passage

Rönnholm, Kajsa January 2023 (has links)
Within this text, I will discuss my process of making sculptures through my examining MA soloshow. It is a deeply personal reflection of my ideas and where they originate from, symbolsand what they speak of, materials and techniques they require. The theme of my sculptures ischildhood and memories, what I lost when growing up, and who I became. There is also astrong theme of craftsmanship in my work and, in this text, an exploration of materials andthe knowledge of my working hands. In this essay, I present four sculptures within thechapters THE BRAID, THE ROPE, THE MITTEN, and THE WELL. It aims to give the reader aninsight into my artistic process when creating my MA exam work.
