Our purpose in this work is to introduce representations of image viewpoints and viewpoint changes of a planar object in conformal Clifford algebras. Our important preliminary contribution is a generalization of the conformal model of the Euclidean space through a two-parameter family of horospheres. Each one of these is embedded into a real vector space of dimension 4 equipped with a metric equivalent to the Minkowski metric. We describe two approaches that make use of these generalized conformal models for image representations. These are based on modelings of perspective distortions of the object caused by a variation of the latitude angle of the camera. First, we model the image viewpoints by the horospheres of the Minkowski space of dimension 4. In this setting, the viewpoint changes are linearized through a group of linear conformal transformations of this space. This approach is generalized by describing the viewpoints through the objects of a groupoid whose morphisms are commutative diagrams that model the viewpoint changes. A conformal image is then described as a map defined on a horosphere. The action of the groupoid on the set of conformal images leads us to associate with every planar object the orbit of its conformal images from all viewpoints.

The social transmission of non-human animal behaviors has been studied by many psychologists or biologists. Adopting the anthropological viewpoint of the comparative approaches in didactics, we study the learning of nut-craking by young chimpanzees in Taï. This behavior described as "cultural" by primatologists are comparable to what didaticians call "oeuvres". In this respect, this object can be subjected to a didactic analysis. Using the data collected by primatologists, we offer a didactic analysis of the joint action of young chimpanzees and their mother (looked upon as institutional subjects) relating to nut-craking. The Transana software we used enabled us to carry out several types of analyses : 1/ longitudinal analyses by age group ; 2/ cross-sectional analyses by « action/sequence of actions » ; 3/ the highlighting of biographemes. Having described what young primates and their mother do in the course of each age group, we demonstrate that the chimpanzees' age constitues a determinant of the form of didactic action . Our method for studying the nut-craking learning process among wild chimpanzees applies for all acculturation situations. Using the norms the age analysis revealed, we identify episods called "biographems" in which young chimpanzees we can observe that their relation to nut-cracking evolved and located those biographems within the didactic biography of the subjects we observed. Since the cross-sectional analyses of certain actions had a strong effect in terms of learning, we assume that the nature and form of didactic action is influenced by other determinants, in particular the young chimpanzee's sexe and whether the mother is primiparous or not.

Beyong the veil : Muslim women write backSwart, Susanna Maria January 1999 (has links)
This thesis sets out to provide what is perceived as the nature of Islam and background
that inform the interpretation of the two novels ofMariama Ba as well as that of selected
works by fellow Muslim writer, N awal El-Saadawi. Although the question of gender is
carefully addressed, the principal viewpoint is Islamic theocratic rather than purely
feminist.
This study surveys the struggle of these two women writers to claim public space in a
dominant patriarchal society. It examines the socio-political conditions affecting women
in the Arab peninsula before the rise of Islam, also called Jahiliyyah, from Islam's
inception (622 AD). It notes that the principle of equality of all the believers was
established by the injunction in the Qur'an, and endorsed by Muhammad, the Prophet,
after whose death, manipulation of the sacred texts, especially of the Hadiths, took place.
This led to opposition to gender equality; while fitna (civil war) in Medina, led the Prophet to re-institute the hijablveil, in order to protect women from being sexually
harassed. The significance of the hijab is then explored, and Fatima Mernissi's text Women and
Islam (1987; 1992) is used as seminal to the argument that the hijab was not instituted
to put a barrier between men and women. The question of how the Islamic tradition
succeeded in transforming the Muslim woman into a submissive, marginal creature, one
who once buried herself behind a veil, is considered in the light of feminist theory and practice in both the Third and Arab worlds as well as in terms of the postcolonial notion
of 'writing back'.
The works of Ba and El-Saadawi, chosen for discussion in this thesis, examine these
common issues, and underscore the entitlement of women to equality. The proposition,
that Muslim women talk/write back, is epitomized in Ramatoulaye's forceful wordsuttered
after thirty years of silence and harassment: 'This time I shall speak out' (So Long
a Letter, 1980; 1989: 58).
This study also shows that both Ba and El-Saadawi (by employing the journalisme-verite
approach) move beyond gender and cultural issues to explore the universal nature of man
and woman, and that in accordance with Muslim theocracy, these writers ultimately
advocate the notion of redemption through humanity, coincidentally expressed in the
Wolofproverb: 'Man, man is his own remedy!' (Scarlet Song, 1981; 1994: 165). Furthermore, within the context of these concerns, a few speculative remarks on the likely
future ofMuslim women in the Arab and African world are made, arguing that had Ba's
life not been cut short so tragically, it is reasonable to suppose that she would, like ElSaadawi,
have continued to advocate a holistic, healthy Muslim society, in which the
humane treatment of women would prevail.
Finally, in terms of the title Beyond the veil: Muslim women write back, an attempt has
been made to show how both Ba and El-Saadawi strive by 'writing back' to move 'beyond'
the veil, speaking out on behalf of fellow Muslim women in Africa. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 1999. / gm2014 / English / unrestricted

Matematiklärares syn på muntlig matematikför elever med matematiksvårigheter : En innehållsanalytisk studie om stödjande faktorer / Mathematics teachers view on oralmathematics for students with mathematicaldifficulties : A content‐analytical study on supporting factorsJacobsson, Anton, Lundqvist, Johan January 2018 (has links)
Elevens deltagande i matematiska diskussioner 6. / Mathematics has a unique subject language that students need to master in writing as well as verbally. Shortcomings in the oral mathematical communication capacity contribute to the fact that students with mathematical difficulties do not receive an approved grade in mathematics for grade 9. These students need help and support from their environment in order not to risk being disapproved. This study has been conducted with the purpose of portraying and analyzing mathematics teachers' views on supportive factors for students with mathematical difficulties focusing on oral mathematical communication skills. As a method, a content analytical research approach with inductive thematic methodology has been used and the study is based on five semi structured interviews. Mathematics teachers' views have been judged to be possible to be depicted and analyzed by the following six themes: 1. The balance between oral and written communication 2. The oral mathematical communications skills components 3. Activities based on the students' needs 4. Supporting learning environment for the student 5. The student's participation in mathematical discussions 6. Cooperation with the parents Teachers agree that students with mathematical difficulties need adaptations of content and knowledge objectives for oral mathematical ability. However, there is no unanimity in the teacher's view of adequate goals and content, but this is considered being the result of a variety of factors such as the student's knowledge, teacher's interpretation of the curriculum, the written focus in mathematics, the lack of adequate situations to assess oral capacity, stress and time shortages and the less good availability of special educators. Students with mathematical difficulties also need support in the context they are in. This believes teachers can be managed by either blending the context of differences in student knowledge or ensuring that students with mathematical difficulties interact with friends who they feel safe interacting with. Teachers also try to support the students with control, control and order, which can be explained by the fact that these students experience through their teens. The teacher makes a subjective assessment of the students' need for governance, and this then paves the way for the students to participate and influence in different ways. Teachers also have different expectations of student performance in a participation, where some teachers believe that the students are performing, with which some people are content with a participation. Teachers thus have different focus on these students ‐ either knowledge or value goals. The last theme concerns teachers' views on cooperation with the parents. Some teachers are interpreted believing that this contact contributes positively whereas others have not been interpreted having the same beliefs.

[en] A FRAMEWORK FOR AUTOMATED VISUAL INSPECTION OF UNDERWATER PIPELINES / [pt] UM FRAMEWORK PARA INSPEÇÃO VISUAL AUTOMATIZADA DE DUTOS SUBAQUÁTICOSEVELYN CONCEICAO SANTOS BATISTA 30 January 2024 (has links)
A inteligência artificial apresenta diversos
Ao final deste projeto, o Visual Inspection of Pipelines (VIP) framework
[en] In aquatic environments, the traditional use of divers or manned underwater
vehicles has been replaced by unmanned underwater vehicles (such as
ROVs or AUVs). With advantages in terms of reducing safety risks, such as
exposure to pressure, temperature or shortness of breath. In addition, they are
able to access areas of extreme depth that were not possible for humans until
then.
These unmanned vehicles are widely used for inspections, such as those
required for the decommissioning of oil platforms. In this type of inspection, it
is necessary to analyze the conditions of the soil, the pipeline and, especially,
if an ecosystem was created close to the pipeline. Most of the works carried
out for the automation of these vehicles use different types of sensors and
GPS to perform the perception of the environment. Due to the complexity of
the navigation environment, different control and automation algorithms have
been tested in this area. The interest of this work is to make the automaton
take decisions through the analysis of visual events. This research method provides the advantage of cost reduction for the project, given that cameras have a lower price compared to sensors or GPS devices.
The autonomous inspection task has several challenges: detecting the
events, processing the images and making the decision to change the route in
real time. It is a highly complex task and needs multiple algorithms working
together to perform well. Artificial intelligence presents many algorithms to
automate, such as those based on reinforcement learning, among others in the
area of image detection and classification.
This doctoral thesis consists of a study to create an advanced autonomous
inspection system. This system is capable of performing inspections only by
analyzing images from the AUV camera, using deep reinforcement learning,
and novelty detection techniques. However, this framework can be adapted to
many other inspection tasks.
In this study, complex realistic environments were used, in which the
agent has the challenge of reaching the object of interest in the best possible
way so that it can classify the object.
It is noteworthy, however, that the simulation environments utilized in this context exhibit a certain degree of
simplicity, lacking features like marine currents or collision dynamics in their
simulated scenarios.
At the conclusion of this project, a Visual Inspection of Pipelines (VIP)
framework was developed and tested, showcasing excellent results and illustrating the feasibility of reducing inspection time through the optimization of
viewpoint planning. This type of approach, in addition to adding knowledge to
the autonomous robot, means that underwater inspections require little pres-
ence of a human being (human-in-the-loop), justifying the use of the techniques
employed.

The various stakeholders who describe study and implement a complex system require viewpoints that are dedicated to their concerns. However, in the context of Model-Driven Engineering, approaches to define and implement those viewpoints are either too rigid and inappropriate or completely ad hoc. In addition, those various viewpoints are rarely independent from each other. Therefore, we must strive to identify and describe the relationships/correspondences between the viewpoints in order to be able to verify that the parts of the solution given by the various stakeholders form a consistent whole. The work presented in this thesis provides a way to define dedicated languages based on UML for the viewpoints. For this, a method that analyzes the semantics of the textual descriptions of the concepts of the domain we want to map to UML has been implemented to facilitate the definition of UML profiles. The results we get on the concrete test cases we considered are encouraging and go beyond results of existing tools. To define a viewpoint based on some UML profiles, this thesis provides a method that lets the methodologist make explicit the viewpoint he/she wants. A tool can then generate the tooling that implements this viewpoint in a modeling environment together with the corresponding dedicated language while current practice is based on an implementation essentially manual. To assist the identification of relationships between the viewpoints, this thesis proposes again to analyze the semantics of textual descriptions of concepts of the languages used by the viewpoints. Used in combination with existing syntactic heuristics, the proposed approach provides good results when the terminologies of the languages that are analyzed are far apart. A theoretical framework based on category theory is provided to make explicit formally correspondences. To use this framework, a category for languages based on UML has been proposed. To be able to make explicit the correspondences between the models of those languages as well, the category of OWL ontologies is used. A solution is proposed to characterize correspondences that are more complex than the simple equivalence relationship. This theoretical framework provides a way to define formally complex relationships that can be used to verify the consistency of the architectural description. Once the description of the architecture has been integrated according to the formal correspondences, the issue of consistency is considered. The experiments carried out on a concrete test case to verify consistency on a syntactic perspective give satisfactory practical results. The experiments carried on the same test case to verify consistency on a semantic perspective don’t give satisfactory practical results.

Thinking and seeing for speaking : The viewpoint preference in Swedish/Japanese monolinguals and bilinguals / Thinking and seeing for speaking : Perspektivpreferens hos svenska/japanska enspråkiga och tvåspråkiga personerHayakawa Thor, Masako January 2016 (has links)
“Linguistic relativity” has been studied for a long time. Many empirical studies have been conducted on cross-linguistic differences to find support for the influence of language on thought. This study proposes viewpoint (defined as the point from which the conceptualizer sees and construes the event) as a cross-linguistic difference, and explores whether the linguistic constraint and preference of subjective/objective construal can affect one’s cognitive activity as viewpoint. As Japanese is a subjectivity-prominent language whereas Swedish is not, data elicited from monolingual adolescences (aged 12-16) in Japan and Sweden were compared. A set of tasks which consisted of non-verbal tasks (scene-visualisation) and verbal tasks (narrative of comic strips) was performed in order to elicit the participants’ viewpoints. The same set of tasks was assigned to simultaneous Swedish-Japanese bilingual adolescences in Sweden. The bilinguals took the set of non-verbal and verbal tasks twice, once in Swedish and once in Japanese. The results demonstrated a clear difference between the monolingual groups both in the non-verbal and verbal tasks. The Japanese monolinguals showed a higher preference for subjective viewpoint. The bilinguals’ viewpoint preference had a tendency to fall between that of monolinguals of both languages. This finding indicates that the bilinguals’ viewpoint preference may be influenced by both languages. This study demonstrates for the first time that the speaker’s viewpoint can be affected not only in verbal tasks but also in non-verbal tasks. The findings suggest that a language may influence the speaker’s way of construing events. It is also implied that the influences from different languages in bilinguals can be bidirectional. However, the influence does not seem to be all or nothing. Regardless of the language, one’s event construal is more or less the same. Nevertheless, the findings indicate that the linguistic subjectivity in a language tends to counteract the universal construal.

The athletic performance of male track and field athletes amazed the world by winning the overall championship though it was the debut of Taiwan in this athletic event. These male athletes disciplined themselves, obeyed the rules, cooperated with one another, obeyed the referees’ orders, and exhibited good sportsmanship. Both their athletic performance and sportsmanship on the sports field or beyond sports field were ranked as “national champion” by the sponsor. Their great performance actually was the achievement from the devotion to developing athletic sports during Japanese Occupation Period. In fact, before the colonization of Japan, modern athletic sports in Taiwan were only practiced in few regions where foreigners aggregated and the effect of athletic performance was quite limited. The overall promotion of athletic sports was put into practice through school education and social sports activities until the Japanese Occupation Period and so was the great performance achieved at that time. The main purpose of this study is to investigate why and how the Japanese developed athletic sports in Taiwan and the effects.
The research subjects were mainly the athletes at that time in Taiwan, including the Japanese, the Taiwanese, and the aboriginals (indigenous people) since these three groups were all members of sports representatives in Taiwan at that time. These subjects were investigated to find out about the development of athletic sports in Taiwan at that time. Firstly, the study probed into the rise and the development of modern western athletic sports. With the expansion of national powers of European countries and the U.S., their science, technology, and life styles were spread to Asia. Moreover, after Meiji Restoration, the Japanese started to put emphasis on improving their physique and hence learnt the western athletic sports. And Taiwan was colonized by Japan under this background. Secondly, it investigated the concepts and viewpoints on athletic sports proposed from all walks of life during Japanese Occupation Period to demonstrate the motives and purposes of athletic sport development. Thirdly, it investigated the major facilities responsible for promoting athletic sports from the aspects of personnel matters, funds, and the operation methods to understand who were involved, how they developed athletic sports, and under what kind of background were athletic sports developed. Fourthly, it investigated the performance of athletes in each kind of sports games, especially national games. The study also compared the athletic performance of Taiwan with that of nearby countries such as Korea, Manjou, Japan, and Philippine to understand the athletic level of Taiwan. Fifthly, it analyzed the leisure sports that the leaders of the society engaged in to explore the preferences of leisure sports of the rich at that time and further investigate the profile of athletic sports development.
This study found that the development of athletic sports in Taiwan during Japanese Occupation Period was dominated by the government with the cooperation of non-government in promotion. The sports organizations in Taiwan were the colonial branches of sports organizations in Japanese Empire and the national sports competitions in Taiwan became local preliminaries of Japanese national competitions. The outstanding athletes in Taiwan and the winners of local preliminaries would become the local sports representatives to participate in competitions of higher level in Japan. In addition, the study found that physical education is indispensable in modern education, which not only improves the physical development of individuals but also improves health. Meanwhile, athletic sports ability not simply teaches a kind of physical movement and it is sometimes viewed as a symbol of national powers. The development of athletic sports helped cultivate the personality of people and improved the integration ethnic integration between Taiwan and Japan. With the increase of colonization time and the reinforcement of governance, the athletic sports in Taiwan gradually became more and more popular. On the other hand, it was found that the sports activities in Taiwan was greatly influenced by Japan and even the Japanese sports vocabularies are still used now in sports activities. As for the athletic performance of Taiwan during Japanese Occupation Period, as a whole, the athletic performance of Taiwan was better than Japan and other colonies of Japan, such as Korea, Manjou, and Philippine. Although the athletes in Taiwan during Japanese Occupation Period did not compete with the athletes of China, it could be inferred from their athletic performance that the overall level of athletic sports in Taiwan during Japanese Occupation Period was equivalent to that of China.
