Gren, Anette, 0hlsson, Lena January 2010 (has links)
This article seeks to examine the effects alcohol abuse have on the growth of women and how, as adults, their lives are affected by this. It tries to encourage a better understanding and knowledge of these experiences and how instances of support and help have influenced the subject’s life, from childhood through to adulthood. Through 10 qualitative interviews of adult women, all affected by childhood alcohol abuse, the article tries to get a better understanding of how these women coped under these circumstances. The article attempts also to better understand how the women’s experiences of support during childhood have benefited them and how they feel as adults today.

Vuxna barn till alkoholmissbrukare : Kvinnors upplevelser av förälderns missbruk och missbrukets påverkan under barndom och vuxenliv / Adult children of alcohol abusers : Women’s experiences of the parent’s drug abuse and the influence of drug abuse during childhood and adultship

Holmstedt, Jenny, Siipo, Erika January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to obtain a deeper insight regarding how a woman can be affected as a child but also as an adult by growing up in a family where one of the parents is an alcohol abuser. The field of interest is to study the childhood environment and its influence on the individual in psychological terms as well as physically and socially. Since earlier research has mainly focused on how boys and men are influenced by growing up in families where one parent is an alcoholic, this study concentrates on women. Aiming to get a deeper insight into the problem area, a qualitative method was chosen, including in-depth interviews with four women. The study reveals several similarities between the four women, including similar functions in the family system, such as loyalty, and which roles the women assumed. The study also suggests certain differences between the women and the families and it is shown that some of the factors influencing these differences are the sex of the alcohol abusing parent and the presence of other adults. Growing up in a family where one parent was an alcoholic has affected the adult women in several ways, for instance has everyone, or had, problems regarding trust and several had problematic relationships with men.

Det är sånt som fortfarande sitter kvar än idag” : En kvalitativ studie om unga vuxna barn till alkoholister / Experiences of growing up with a parent with alcohol abuse : “I felt discouraged, not needed, not loved and the memories still appear time by time” : A qualitative study of young adult children of alcoholics

Eskilsson, Ida, Ström, Nathalie January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to create an increased knowledge and understanding of young adults’ experiences from growing up as a child in a family with alcohol abuse, as well as studying long-term consequences of this. In the study five qualitative interviews were conducted, with young adults who grew up with a parent who abused alcohol. The results of the study were analyzed by Bronfenbrenner's developmental ecological model, as well as by the theoretical concepts risk, protective factors and resilience. Results and conclusions showed, that all informants experienced negative consequences during childhood and in adult life, due to the parent’s abuse. The families of the informants were characterized by an abnormal use of alcohol during their childhood, which led to a high level of conflict, lack of relationships, a major responsibility at home for the informants, negative health effects and school difficulties. The young adults stated, that they are living a good life today, but that childhood has made its mark in their minds. The informants narrated experienced health problems, difficulties with feeling trust and expressing how they feel as well as a lack of relation to the parent with addiction.

Del Toro, Aylin, Samuelsson, Zemone January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to describe and understand the meaning of adult children´s experience of growing up in a family with addiction. The study is based on a lifeworld phenomenological approach where the adult children have been the focus. The data collection consisted of five open interviews, where the adult children gave their experience of their childhood. The result of the study shows that adult children all have experienced the sense of shame/stigma, de-prioritized, a dysfunctional everyday life, a body that reacts and a body that remembers. This has led to various challenges and consequences while growing up, the adult children have handled this differently according to their own abilities and circumstances. It has also resulted in challenges in adulthood, which also have been handled differently depending on the person. Based on the results, it has been possible to understand the importance of preventive work towards families where there is an addiction problem. Something that further needs continuous research to prevent dysfunctional upbringing.

Föräldrar till missbrukande vuxna barn : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av emotioner i spelfilmer / Parents of Addicted Adult Children : A Qualitative Content Analysis of Emotions in Feature Films

Vorwerk Lilja, Cornelia, Möller, Josefin January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study was to understand how films depict how it is emotionally and also emotional similarities and differences to be a parent, mother and father of a young adult child with a narcotics addiction. The analysis is based on two American films. In this study we refer to drugs in the form of narcotics and not alcohol. The method for this study was a qualitative content analysis. The study found that parents of adult children with drug addiction feel many similar emotions from a perspective of sociology of emotions and psychology of emotions. However, there are differences in how these emotions are made visible to the outside world and what the reactions are as a result of the emotions they feel. Emotions that often arise for parents of adult children with addiction are anger, fear, joy, grief, shame and guilt. These emotions that the parents feel are combined in different ways, which is depicted in the films. Some patterns depicted in both films regarding emotions are that anger often hides grief, shame, guilt or fear. The father in Beautiful Boy clearly shows anger outwards while hiding feelings of anger, joy, grief, shame and guilt. The mother in Ben is back also feels anger but is not shown outwards in the same way, rather in the form of sadness and nausea. On the other hand, the nausea hides an anger which also hides the feelings mentioned above of shame, guilt, grief or fear. Other patterns that also are depicted in the films are that grief hides anger and that shame hides anger or fear. The films depict that the mother and father feel ashamed that they have failed as a parent, however, this feeling of shame hides feelings such as anger and fear when the parents are annoyed about the situation their sons are in, as well as worries and fears about what might happen and the risks that comes with the addiction. Emotions that are seen externally from both mum and dad are anger in various forms, guilt, grief and above all anxiety that is constantly portrayed through both feature films.

Vuxna barns självbiografiska skildringar av att växa upp med en alkoholmissbrukande förälder / An analysis of adult children’s autobiographical depictions of growing up with a parent with an alcohol use disorder

Huth, Magdalena, Nilsson, Felicia January 2023 (has links)
One fifth of Sweden's children growing up have under their childhood had at least one parent who had an alcohol use disorder. Children are individually affected in different ways by the circumstances of their upbringing and it is not something that is always apparent to those outside the family circle.  It becomes a dilemma when these children's voices aren't heard. Another compounding factor can be an absence of social support and intervention often carried out by social workers. Social programs adapted to these children’s situation can help break the silence and reach the individuals hiding behind the masks put on to shield off the world outside. We were interested how individuals who had been subjected to having a parent with an alcohol disorder described their experiences and how they felt they had been affected by that circumstance. We wanted to leverage this to reach a deeper understanding of how to better support children living with this situation. This formed the purpose of the of this study and gave rise to the questions investigated. The method employed to conduct the study was a thematic analysis on six swedish autobiographies within this framework. After the autobiographies had been read, four different themes to further investigate emerged: escape from reality, consequences embodied as adults, socioeconomic situation, and relevant social work. Analyses showed that the authors were affected by difficult childhoods impacted by parental alcohol use disorders in a multitude of different ways.  By example, they devised different methods to flee their predicament as children. The results also showed these children could be found in different types of homes and strata across the spectrum of socioeconomic statuses. The now grown children also believed that their childhoods would have been improved if they had had more caring, secure adults in their vicinity to their lives otherwise filled with chaos.

Relatives have an important and central part in palliative care and can affect the victim's mood. Palliative care involves relieving symptoms and suffering where the focus is not on curing the disease. The nurse has an important role to support and involve relatives in the communication. Autonomy is seen as a difficult ethical dilemma in palliative care as the sufferer may have difficulty being self-determined in the final stages of life.   Aim: The purpose was to describe relatives' experiences of caring for a relative with cancer in the final stages of life at home.  Method: The chosen method was a literature review linked to Friberg. Ten scientific articles were included in the results. The articles were analyzed according to Friberg's method. The result articles had a qualitative design and were taken from CINAHL Complete and MEDLINE.   Results: The literature review was presented in three themes and five sub-themes. The first theme includes becoming a caregiver, with the sub-theme responsibility to be constantly on guard. The second theme includes emotions of care, with the sub-theme of stress, the time close to death. The last theme includes need for support, with the sub-theme support from family and friends, support from health care.   Conclusion: The results showed that close relatives felt a responsibility to care for their relatives, this responsibility meant, among other things, that heavy decisions were in their hands regarding the relatives' autonomy. The responsibility also contributed with negative effects both mentally and physically in the form of exhaustion. Preparations for death proved to be an important part of the mental health of close relatives and that support from family, friends and care staff emerged as meaningful.
