Hermine Cloeter, Feuilletons, and Vienna: A Flaneuse and Urban Cultural Archaeologist Wandering Through Opaque Spaces, Bridging Past and Present to Reclaim What Could Be Lost

Barbour, Kelli D. 17 July 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Despite the authority that time holds in the discipline of studying events of the past, not all historians or writers analyzing the past use time to study history—some use space, including writers who write about and interact with an urban topography. The space used by these writers is built space, as well as inhabited and practiced "lived" space. Whereas time provides a transparent overview of history, the urban spaces tend to be opaque. Clarifying history through urban space is additionally troublesome, because built space and its attached memories are visibly forgotten and ignored as time advances. Despite the difficulties of working with and understanding urban space, some intellectuals specifically choose space as a tool of discernment of history. For these individuals, understanding history becomes an investigation of sensing, feeling, and divining human activity out of the mass of artifacts and used spaces. Hermine Cloeter is one such urban forensic historian.

Demay-Degoustine, Marie-Odile 11 1900 (has links)
This research analyses how the medium of television has taken up the question of art history through the historical and critical review of series that have been acclaimed by their mass audiences. Viewed from a historical perspective, a number of milestone series have left their mark on the history of television and art. Some of them have contributed to the construction and dissemination of art-historical discourse, often formal and sometimes critical. This work examines film and television production on art in the developed countries of North America and Western Europe, notably the United States, France and the United Kingdom, at the time of the emergence and institutionalization of the medium of television, between 1945 and 1970, and then looks at the resonances in subsequent and contemporary programs. And, secondly, in a spirit of critical analysis, to try to understand what "television is doing to art and its history" in order to identify the specific discourse of television art history. In practical terms, the aim is to add to the literature on a subject that has so far received very little attention from art historians, and to help legitimize the medium as an object of art criticism.

Hoyos, Camilo 23 March 2010 (has links)
The purpose of our investigation is to analyze the image of Paris forged in four Surrealist texts published between 1926-1928 in order to understand the Surrealist elements that allowed Julio Cortázar to forge his own image of the city in the novel Rayuela. Our analytical criteria are the importance of the regard and the promenade in the construction of the city as an interior and personal space. To understand the importance of the Surrealist production, it was necessary to visit the origins of Paris as a literary text in the late eitheenth century, the importance of the tradition noctámbule in the XIXth century, the incidences of Baudelaire's work regarding the modern Paris and the change of century that allowed the Surrealist movement to understand the city as an interior and psychic space. Through the establishment of certain criteria and images, we analyzed Paris in Cortázar's novel Rayuela as a Surrealist product, even if Cortázar himself never felt as as a Surrealist writer.

Research: ROTHKO : - ett arbete om att lära känna sig själv genom någon annan / Research: ROTHKO : - about getting to know yourself through someone else

af Malmborg, Solith January 2017 (has links)
This thesis project examines both inner and outer circumstances of knowledge in an attempt to emphasize the importance of personal reflection. I search for answers on how to communicate feelings through colour and form by studying Mark Rothko and the abstract expressionism. A personal reflection is made parallelly to expand my own understanding of the subject and my own role in relation to it. I also explore painting as amethod of deepening my understanding of Rothko. Mark Rothko is both subject of study and tutor as I give myself the task of translating his art into my own design. The result offers thoughts and ideas on the significance of the work of hand, the use of colour and the meaning of intention, which I claim are important aspects when aiming for emotional results. However I also reflect upon the fact that the communication remains individual and that it is therefore problematic to confirm success in this matter.

Varan-i-världen : Varan i form och innehåll i En dramatikers dagbok / Being-in-capitalism : The commodity in content and form in Diary of a Playwright

Stark Theander, Ellen January 2022 (has links)
This thesis explores the commodity as a motif in the first volume of Lars Norén’s Diary of a Playwright, as well as how this motif relates to reification and alienation, and in addition is reflected in the work formally. The study is oriented both towards the text’s depiction of the commodity and its reflections on its own depiction. These descriptions are read in light of Marxist theory and through comparisons with Walter Benjamin’s Passagenwerk, where the latter work also forms a connection to Martin Heidegger and Simone Weil in their capacity of important influences for Norén. Much like in the Passagenwek, the commodity acts as a secret structure in Diary of a Playwright. It organises the text and its seemingly disparate elements on a deeper level. The study contributes to a new understanding of one the greatest Swedish writers in the 20th and 21st centuries. Although the diary has not been the subject of much research, the predominant understanding of the work is, as with Norén’s other writings, largely characterised by a psychoanalytic perspective.
