Altogether, fourteen teachers from Federal University of Ceará (Universidade Federal do Ceará), Ceará State University (Universidade Estadual do Ceará), and University of Fortaleza (Universidade de Fortaleza) were interviewed. However, only thirteen interviews were analyzed. Our study is based on the concepts of the French Discourse Analysis theory, such as the concepts of discourse, discursive formation, discursive memory, disciplinary power, and identity, demonstrating that the linguistic dimension is articulated to the discourse in a social-historical way. We utilized the clinical interview methodology (MAIA-VASCONCELOS, 2005) to trigger a narrative of the college graduation and pedagogical practice of each professor. We intend, from the analysis of a discursive practice, this is, the one that takes place during the psychologist’s college graduation, to verify which meaning or meanings involving the theme of health humanization are being constituted, and the relevance of them to the identity and praxis of this professional. The results demonstrate that, in general, professors’ discourses show agreement with the principles and directions of health humanization policy and that the identity of this professional is changing in order to adequate to the work market and to the current reality of the Brazilian society / A nossa pesquisa se propõe a fazer um estudo interpretativo e analítico sobre quais valores, princípios e diretrizes emergem no discurso da humanização do SUS e de como este discurso se efetiva no discurso dos professores dos cursos de Psicologia da Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), Universidade Estadual do Ceará (UECE) e da Universidade de Fortaleza (UNIFOR).

[en] ARGUMENTATION IN THE UNIVERSITY: POST-GRADUATION: THE PLACE OF REASON? / [pt] ARGUMENTAÇÃO NO ENSINO SUPERIOR: PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO: O LOCAL DA RAZÃO?

MARCELO BAFICA COELHO 10 September 2018 (has links)
[en] This thesis aims to discuss some of the relationships between rationality and argumentative practices characteristic of Brazilian higher education, especially in the context of graduate studies. For this purpose, the investigation of the theories of the German philosopher Jurgen Habermas is crucial, especially his analysis of the rules of discourse. These rules were considered in this work as the guiding elements of communicative and discursive rationality. A central focus of the thesis is to discuss issues related to the implementation of Habermas s ideas. For this purpose, it became necessary to investigate the concept of systematically distorted communication and articulate other observations from different theoretical perspectives: the theory of prototypes in cognitive psychology; the notion of stereotypes in social psychology; the concept of schemas in Piaget s genetic psychology; and the hermeneutic circle in hermeneutics. The thesis concludes with general reflections on argumentation intended to clarify the implications of this study for educational processes in higher education.

Toassi, Ramona Fernanda Ceriotti January 2008 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to comprehend the ongoing process of construction and implantation of an integrated curriculum for graduation in dental education, according to the National Curricular Guidelines, in a community university in the south of Brazil. In this sense, it was evaluated the expectations of the engaged students, professors, and the management group of the university. It was employed a qualitative methodology of case study based on the testimonies of the subjects moved ahead on the curricular reform for the graduation degree in Odontology of the Universidade do Planalto Catarinense (UNIPLAC) in Lages, State of Santa Catarina. Data were gathered along 9 months by direct interviews to all the selected participants belonging to the groups of undergraduate students (from the new integrated curriculum), assistant and full professors (from different professional working areas), and members of the directive group in different hierarchical positions. Besides this approach, research data included documental analysis and notes in regard to direct in loco observations. The writing discursive analysis technique was employed as proposed by Moraes and Galiazzi (2007). Results were grouped in the following categories: 1) The curricular reform process: one possible proposal for changing graduation standards; 2) Process-related stress: differences between the imagined theory and the perceived truth (Integration: the crucial condition for an integrated curriculum/ Organization or lack of organization/ Dentists as professors or professors that are also dentists: teaching (non-)capacities of the professors of Odontology; Exams, lessons and curriculum: difficulties for the integration/ Where is the Odontology course coordination group? The new and emergent fact: the challenger changing); 3) The development of the process and its forward steps; 4) The ongoing experience of an integrated curriculum: a continuous process of learning and overcoming; 5) The graduation in Odontology at UNIPLAC: what can be foreseen? There was a long and complex process for the elaboration of the new curricular structure, mainly due to the motivation and participation of the professors engaged in the Odontology course. For them and the students, it was not an easy way to realize the rationale of the new curricular proposal. Even though, students from different graduation years felt themselves well adapted to the integrated curriculum and high rated their experience with the new curriculum when asked to. Main limitations that were noted included: - lack of integration, organization and dialogue within and among the modular themes; - professors’ lack of knowledge of the new integrated curriculum proposal; - how is the Univeristy policy for the professor application and selection procedure; - difficulties when evaluating students’ performance; - lack of pedagogical expertise for the course coordinator position; and, - lack of adequate training for the Odontology docent staff prior to and after the beginning of the new integrated curriculum. There is a clear need for redirecting this process of curricular reform aiming a more reliable and consistent way as well as a more participative and collective administration of the UNIPLAC. In this context, the base effectiveness of the professional graduation offered by the program in the municipality of Toledo-PR was analysed in the year of 2009 and this program was concluded in the year of 2010. In order to guide the proposal of this work, we used, as a referential base, bibliographical sources based on a federal program for the education, the Projovem Urbano, and how its implantation, monitoring and evaluation were approached. We have discoursed about the characterisation of the municipality of Toledo-PR and the execution of the program, an history of the policies and public programs of professional graduation in Brazil, the professional graduation of young people inserted in the Projovem Urbano, evaluation of public policies and the effectiveness of policies and programs of professional graduation. Coming from the identified problem in this work, the research intends to verify how much the program was efficient to reach its initial goal, proposed through the professional graduation. For that, the used tool, was the interview, and the studied population was the students who have concluded all the steps of the program in 2010, which includes a 60 young people group. The results obtained from the research have permitted to know, at the exploratory step of the research, the personal, sociodemographical and educational characteristics of the young people who have run away from the regular educational system. Finally, it has permitted an evaluation of the results of the Projovem Urbano program through the vision of the students who had participated. We have observed that the goal of the professional graduation offered to the young people inserted in the program is concentrated in the development of abilities favorable to the self-knowledge, the sociability and the personal accomplishment. The sum of these factors collaborates to the professional insertion, aiming to guarantee an income to the young people, and by this way to provide their autonomy. Despite the range of benefits discerned by the program, we conclude that the professional graduation wasn t efficient in quantity. The program was more positive for young people who weren t working during the realization of this program, which was the reality of a small part of the students. We have also perceived that the effort to grade the young people in administrative area haven t added considerable benefits to the graduated students, which ones telled they have obtained better results with the General and Tecnical Formation, which one tended to the professional world preparation separated from a specific field of formation.

Breast implants for graduation? Parent and adolescent narratives.

Fowler, Lori Ann 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to examine through sociological and psychological theories how women make sense of the desire and attainment of breast implants for graduation. The study used a qualitative approach and focused on women ages 18-35 in the state of Texas who have received breast implants for graduation. The sample size in this study included 10 high-school graduates receiving implants as a gift and their 10 mothers. Seven theoretical paradigms provided a better understanding for why the daughters asked for breast implants and why the parent(s) paid for them. Symbolic interaction theory explained why the daughters wished to replace their "fake" cotton padded self with their augmented self, to become the most authentic woman possible. Social construction of reality theory explained why both mothers and daughters wanted to conform to the social construction of gender, and to accomplish their gender well. Conspicuous consumption theory demonstrated how cosmetic surgery practices allow women to appear wealthy, gain status, and "flash" their assets. Feminist theory explained why some women were motivated to capture the attention of men and others altered the body out of empowerment. Reference group and social comparison theories explained how the women in this study were influenced to undergo cosmetic surgery by ranking themselves in attractiveness against real friends and media icons. Lastly, self-discrepancy theory showed how the daughters in this study felt they needed surgery to fix a discrepancy between their real and ideal self. The majority of respondents expressed complete comfort with their gifting and receiving of breast implants for graduation, claiming it was a great decision. They also agreed surgery was worth any risk to increase their daughter's confidence. Most of the mothers expressed that they were comfortable with their decision to gift surgery to their daughters, despite knowing that their gift of augmentation would ultimately result in more surgery in the future.

Factors contributing to low completion rates of National Certificate Vocational (NCV) students at a TVET college in the Northwest Province

Nthako, Matshwenyego Dorothy 01 1900 (has links)
This study was interested in investigating the factors contributing to low completion rates at a TVET college in the North-West Province. There is not much research conducted on the low completion rates at TVET Colleges in South Africa. The study sought to explore the understanding of completion rates at TVET Colleges, the current completion rates and the causes and the strategies that might be employed to increase the completion rates. Qualitative methodology was used to collect data, using semi-structured interviews for all the focus group interviews. Collected data were transcribed, interpreted, analysed and the findings were presented. The study revealed that factors contributing to the low completion rates are finance and management issues, staff problems, policy factors, socio-economic factors and students’ personal factors that require attention in order to increase the completion rates. These include lecturer qualifications, student funding, inadequate infrastructure, drug and substance abuse, involvement of stakeholders and lack of adherence to policies. The study recommends proper administration of students’ bursaries, effective Quality Management System (QMS), lecturer development, adequate infrastructure and efficient policies to be implemented. The study might draw the attention of the DHET, the college management and other stakeholders in order to come up with interventions to remedy the low completion rates at TVET Colleges. / Educational Management and Leadership / M. APPOLO - Towards integrated urban education in Pretoria : a multi-functional vertical primary school

Du Plessis, Dewald 30 November 2010 (has links)
The Apollo Project investigates the recent establishment of numerous private educational institutions in the inner city of Pretoria. It identifies the need for adequate urban educational facilities and explores the use of existing buildings as schools. An existing educational cluster is identified at the eastern edge of the inner city, defined by Church, Du Toit and Pretorius Streets, and Nelson Mandela Drive. This city block and the ones surrounding it contain numerous primary, secondary and tertiary educational institutions in a predominant industrial/automotive precinct. An urban design framework is proposed for the precinct. It is envisioned that the precinct may be developed as a mixed-use urban educational campus. Within the existing city block and the urban framework proposal, the Apollo Centre, located on the corner of Church-and Du Toit Street, is selected for an adaptive re-use intervention. The proposed use is an urban primary school. The Apollo project investigates current pedagogical trends, which informed a concept that is largely defined by the idea of contextual learning within a vertical structure. Transparency and integration of education with the urban environment is at the core of the proposal. The traditional notion of horizontal education is explored in a vertical manner. The existing structure is analyzed and a position taken regarding the adaptive re-use process that informs the design. Precedent Studies include existing schools within the inner city of Pretoria as well as local and international schools. The process of converting the Apollo Centre into a primary educational facility, that shares its resources on a cross-programming basis, is explored in a series of proposals. The numerous explorations are considered in their various aspects, as well as their relationship to the whole, which then leads to a final design proposal. Key areas of the proposed Apollo Primary School will finally be resolved technically. A conclusion summarizes the author’s thoughts on the result of the project. / Mini Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Architecture / unrestricted
